DOROTHY LOUISE HEMBREE

Dorothy Louise Hembree (nee Wellborn)

April 2, 1927 - December 4, 2005

After a long and courageous fight with cancer, Dorothy Louise Hembree died at age 77 on January 4, 2005, at the home of her daughter in Berkeley, California. Deeply loved by her children, family, friends, and grandchildren, Dorothy was cherished for her high spirits, quick wit, and infectious laughter as well as her warmth, energy, intelligence, quirkiness, and tremendous love, generosity, and devotion to her family and friends.

Dorothy was born on April 2, 1927 to Eldridge and Bonnie Mae (Horn) Wellborn on a farm in rural Clay County, Alabama. She was valedictorian of her class at Clay County High School in Ashland, Alabama, and the first in her family to go to college. She graduated from Perry Business School in Brunswick, Ga., in 1945, and in 1948, received her B.A. from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga. She enjoyed several years of work for the Georgia Department of Education, and in 1952 she married the man who would be her true love, James Howard Hembree (Jim). During their 45 years of marriage in Smyrna and Dunwoody, Georgia, Dorothy belonged to Dunwoody Baptist Church and worked nearly three decades as a Tupperware saleswoman and manager. She repeatedly earned top awards for her sales and management, but more legendary were her rousing lectures, delivered at each Tupperware party, on the importance of organic food and smoking cessation.

After her husband developed early-onset Alzheimer’s, Dorothy cared for him at home until his death in 1997. Several years later she herself was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, along with breast cancer, and in the fall of 2001 she moved to her daughter’s home in California, where she lived for three rich years until her death.

Dorothy is survived by her son William James Hembree (Bill) and daughter-in-law Jan Chaboya Hembree of Potter Valley, Ca.; her grandson Brodie Chaboya; her daughter Diana Kaye Hembree, son-in-law Ali Khosravi and grandson Luis Fernando; sister Frances (husband J. Reed Barrett); sister Shirley O’Neill; sister Jeanette (husband Jack Leathers); her husband’s brothers and sisters Doris Grambling, Virginia Everett (husband Bill), Tommy Hembree (wife Vera), Anne Elsberry (husband Ted), Marcie Hooks (husband Ed), and Cathy Hembree, all of whom live in Austell, Georgia; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins and other relatives in Alabama, Georgia, and elsewhere who grieve her passing.

The family would also like to express its gratitude to her loyal caregivers; doctors and nurses, and hospice staff. Dorothy will be honored by a private memorial in Berkeley, and the funeral and services will be held in Cumming, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the Ingram Funeral Home (770-887-2388) at 210 Ingram Avenue on Monday, January 10, between 2 and 4 p.m. and 6 and 9 p.m., and from 9 a.m.until services the next day. The memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Ingram Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11. The interment will follow at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens in Cumming. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy’s name may be made to Global Exchange or to Sutter VNA and Hospice, 1900 Powell St., Ste. 300, Emeryville, California.
