Cody Austin Williamson

1994-2003

Funeral services for Cody Austin Williamson, 8, of Salem will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Living Way Ministries. The Revs. Tommy and Sylvia Howze will officiate. Burial will follow at Garden Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, and at the church for one hour prior to services.

Master Williamson died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003. He was born Nov. 14, 1994, in Opelika. He was in third grade at Beulah Elementary School. He loved to watch and play football and spent as much time as he could at the drag races. Cody enjoyed fishing, camping and all outdoor activities.

He is survived by his mother, Shannan Laro; his father, Chris Bailey; his step-father, Sammy Laro, all of Salem; three brothers, Aaron Laro of Salem, Samuel and Joshua Hutchinson, both of Opelika; maternal grandparents, Glenda Williamson of Opelika and Mike Williamson of Dadeville; paternal grandparents, Randy and Sherry Bailey; maternal great-grandmother, Leila McCormick; paternal great-grandmother, Margie Bailey and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Kelvis LaShawn Williams

1983-2003

Funeral services for Kelvis LaShawn Williams, 20, of Birmingham, formerly of LaFayette, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in LaFayette. The Rev. Cecelia Broome will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Mr. Williams died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Birmingam. He was born June 27, 1983, in Randolph County. He grew up in Chambers County and attended LaFayette High School. He had recently moved to Birmingham.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Williams of LaFayette; his father, John Edward Wood of LaFayette; three sisters, Jessica Williams of LaFayette, Tiffany Staples of Birmingham and Kristin McCowan of Wadley; three brothers, LaCourtney Williams, Jacorey Williams and Marcus Whitlow, all of LaFayette; two grandmothers, Lucy Carrie Williams of LaFayette and Mary Turner of Five Points; his grandfather, James Wood of Wadley; his step-grandfather, James Turner of Five Points; six aunts, Mary Sue Williams and Charlie L. Williams, both of White Plains, N.Y., Juanita Samuels and Carrie L. Perry and husband Donald, both of LaFayette, Gloria Wood of Tampa, Fla., and Jennifer Wood of Birmingham; two uncles, Robert Williams and wife Joann of West Point, Ga., and Gregory Williams of Elmore; one great uncle, Willie C. Ross of LaFayette; a special friend, Demarcus McCoy of LaFayette; one niece and a host of cousins and friends.

Katherine D. Haynie

1929-2003

Funeral services for Katherine D. Haynie, 74, of New Site will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at New Salem Baptist Church. The Revs. David Tuten and Jimmy Allen will officiate. Burial will follow at Bethlehem-New Salem Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, and at the church for one hour prior to services.

Mrs. Haynie died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at her residence. She was born June 23, 1929, to Claude and Bessie Wheller Causey. She worked as a homemaker and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in WMU. She was also a member of Circle of Friends.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Joe L. Haynie of New Site; three sons, Judson Elliot and Sammy Elliott, both of Eclectic, and Scott Haynie of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Elizabeth Wassman and husband Bill of Theodore; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Butch Causey of Wetumpka and Malory Causey of Fayetteville, N.C., and one sister, Barbara Bently of Charlotte, N.C.

Martha Dean Barnes

1926-2003

Graveside services for Martha Dean Barnes, 77, of New Site will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Hillview Memorial Park. The Revs. Bennie Peacock and David Tuten will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Radney Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barnes died on Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. She was born in Ashland on March 29, 1926, to Harold E. Jones and Bessie Dean Jones. She was a member of the New Salem Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and was retired from Russell Corp.

She is survived by one son, Jake H. Barnes Jr. and his wife Trudy of Auburn; two daughters, Linda Chambers and her husband Ray and Debbie Railey and her husband Johnny all of New Site; five grandchildren, Donna McCain and her husband Dale, Stephen Chambers, Jay Chambers, Lindsey Railey and Mallory Railey all of New Site; and one great-grandchild, Hayden McCain of New Site.

Mary Emma Ransaw

1914-2003

Funeral services for Marry Emma Ransaw, 88, of Alexander City will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Unity Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Roosevelt Gregory will officiate. Burial will follow at Darian Cemetery.

Mrs. Ransaw died Aug. 22, 2003, at Russell Medical Center in Alexander City. She was born Aug. 24, 1914, to West and Carrie Pearson Marbury.

She is survived by her husband The Rev. Charlie Frank Ransaw of Alexander City; two daughters, Elayne Whetstone and husband Tommy of Birmingham, Gwendolyn Martin of Alexander City; three sisters, Frances Walker, Alice Walker and Fannie Mae Allen, all of Alexander City; one brother, Earnest T. Marbury and wife Gloria of Gadsden; four grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, West and Carrie Pearson Marbury.

James Quinton "Kent" Gordon

1919-2003

Funeral services for James Quinton "Kent" Gordon, 84, of Alexander City will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Radney's Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Joe Mallory and Mike Jackson will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003.

Mr. Gordon died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Baptist Medical Center Montclair in Birmingham. He was born March 13, 1919, in Clay County to Mather Marvin and Fannie Smith Gordon. He was retired from Russell Corp. and was a member of Kellyton United Methodist Church where he had served on the Administrative Board. He was also an avid gardener and wood worker. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia Lee Gordon of Alexander City; three daughters, Elaine Meigs and husband Ed of Alexander City, Jamelle Kirk and husband Kenneth of Opelika and Deborah Roberts and husband Greg of Wadley and seven grandchildren, Lee Craig and husband Justin of Griffin, Ga., Forrest Meigs of Alexander City, Misty Kirk of Auburn, Cody Kirk of Opelika, Michelle Ferrell and husband Bret of Lee Sumit, Mo., Jim Roberts of Opelika and Rhianna Roberts of Auburn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Melba Darlene Boyd

1941-2003

Funeral services for Ms. Melba Darlene Boyd, 62, of Alexander City will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Radney Funeral Home Chapel. Randy Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Radney's Funeral Home.

Ms. Boyd was born Feb. 27, 1941, in Alexander City to William Floyd Davis and Eston White Perry. She died at her residence. She worked as an inspector for Russell Corp. where she later retired.

She is survived by one son, James William Gilliam and wife Kitty of Alexander City; one daughter-in-law, Vicky Gilliam Oliver of Reeltown; mother Eston White Perry of Opelika; one brother, Ronald Davis of Alexander City; one grand-daughter, Elizabeth Gilliam and one step-grandson, Harley Johnston.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Floyd Davis and her son Ralph Richard Gilliam, Jr.

L.D. Walker Benton Sr.

1917-2003

Funeral services for L.D. Walker Benton Sr., 86, of Alexander City will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert Lancaster will officiate. Entombment will follow at Hillview Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003.

Mr. Benton died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at his residence. He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Coosa County to Arthur Benton and Roma Lee Peoples Benton. He worked as a supervisor for Russell Corp. for more than 40 years, was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Fannie Belle Benton of Alexander City; one son, L.D. Benton Jr. and wife Pam of Alexander City; one daughter, Jane Howell and husband Scotty of Alexander City; two grandsons, Cody Benton and John Howell, both of Alexander City; three granddaughters, Buffie Benton Stegall and husband Jeff of Alexander City, Jamie Benton Rogers and husband Troy of Birmingham and Hadley Howell of Alexander City; one brother, Robert Benton of Alexander City and one sister, Levis Johnson of Alexander City.

The family will accept flowers or memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 726, Alexander City, AL 35011 or Friends of Hospice, 3368 U.S. Hwy. 280, Suite G-10, Alexander City, AL 35011.

Joyce B. Bennett

Memorial services for Joyce B. Bennett, 69, of Alexander City will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Heritage Chapel. Donna Thornburg and J.O. Rogers will officiate.

Mrs. Bennett died Sept. 14, 2003, at Adam's Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 1, 1934, in Mississippi to Elmer and Laidale Prestridge.

She is survived by three sons, Robert K. Horne and Mark D. Horne, both of Smithville, Miss., and Roy Horne of Wyoming, Mich.; two daughters, Melinda K. Horne of Smithville, Miss., and Joy Smith of Alexander City; three brothers, Verdale Prestridge of Smithville, Miss., Adale Prestridge of Mississippi and Scott P. Prestridge of Columbus, Miss.; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Johnny Frank Harris

Sept. 16, 2003

Funeral services for Johnny Frank Harris, 38, of Tallassee will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Langley Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Langley Funeral Home.

Mr. Harris died Sept. 16, 2003. He was born Monday, Dec. 28, 1964.

He is survived by his mother, Carolyn Holman of Tuskegee; his father, Frank Allen Harris of Eclectic; one sister, Naomi Harris of Tuskegee; one aunt, Naomi Faulk of Tallassee and a number of other relatives.

Hilda G. Martin

1919-2003

Graveside services for Hilda G. Martin, 84, of Alexander City will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Hillview Memorial Park. The Rev. Clayton Gilbert will officiate. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2003.

Mrs. Martin died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Chapman's Healthcare Center. She was born April 14, 1919, in Macon County to Claud Hicks and Minnie Hilda Myhan Godfrey. She worked as a seamstress for Russell Corp. for more than 20 years and was a member of First Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Lawrence P. "Larry" Martin and wife Brenda of Atlanta and Robert R. "Bobby" Martin of Alexander City; three brothers, Wyatt Godfrey and wife Linda of Society Hill, Vernon Godfrey and wife Martha and Monty Godfrey and wife Belle, all of Montgomery; one sister, Betty Ware of Prattville; three grandchildren, Robert Crawford "Rob" Martin of Alexander City, Brian Godfrey Martin and Jaime Parker and husband Charlie, all of Lawrenceville, Ga.; one great-grandchild, Catlin Vickery of Lawrenceville, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Martin and granddaughter, Paige Martin.

Pallbearers will be Tom Godfrey, Randy Godfrey, Ken Godfrey, Stucky Godfrey, John Bailey and Charles Tate.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Children's Harbor, One Our Children's Highway, Children's Harbor, AL 35010-9534 or to the American Cancer Society, Mid-South Division Inc., 3054-C McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36111.
