REGINALD HILL

TALLADEGA Reginald Hill, of 114 1/2 Short Scott St., died Oct. 8 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary.

JAMES R. HODGES

MAGNOLIA, Miss. James R. (Jimmy) Hodges, 79, former pastor of several churches in Talladega County, died Oct. 8 in Magnolia, Miss.

Originally from Florence, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 through the end of World War II. He completed nine combat patrols in the Pacific as a radioman aboard the submarine U.S.S. Blackfish.

After the war, he attended Mississippi College, where he received a degree in English. Thereafter, he graduated from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and began his life's work. In addition to the churches here, he pastored churches in Progress, McComb, Bentonia, Hazlehurst and Waynesboro, Miss., and in Robertsdale, Dadeville and Alexander City.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ethel Hamm Hodges; his children, Mike and Connie Hodges of McComb, Miss., and Mark and Beth Hodges of Jackson, Miss.; three grandchildren, Gabe Hodges of Manassas, Va., Ben Hodges of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Cole Hodges of McComb, Miss.; and one brother, Audie C. Hodges Jr. of Florence.

Arrangements are through Catchings Funeral Home of McComb, Miss., with burial in Progress Baptist Church Cemetery in Progress, Miss.

RUBY NELL PORTER

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. Graveside service for Ruby Nell Porter, 75, will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Glis Cribb officiating.

Mrs. Porter died Oct. 8 at Heron Point Rehab Center in Brooksville, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oco and Clara Waites. She was a native of Talladega County and had lived the past several years in Brooksville, Fla. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Shelia Dennis of Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; two sisters, Dolly Williams of Hernando, Fla., and Shirley Owens of Brooksville, Fla.; two grandchildren, Tony Dennis and Chris Dennis; and one great-grandchild, Chelsey Dennis.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m.

Talladega Funeral Home will direct the service.

CAROL L. SWEET

CROPWELL Funeral service for Carol L. Sweet, 55, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Messer and the Rev. Sherri Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Sweet died Oct. 8. She was a 1969 graduate of Florida State University and had lived in Pell City since 1991. She graduated from UAB in 1995 with a 4.0 GPA. She received her CPA Accreditation in 1997. She had been employed by Sam Grice CPA in Pell City since 1995. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pell City, where she was a member of the choir. She was a member of the Eastern Star, a member of the American Institute and the Alabama Society of CPAs. She was a member of the Pell City Civic Chorus, was a former member of the Pell City Band Boosters and a former treasurer of Boy Scout Troop No. 199. She was a former den mother for Cub Scout Troop 910 and 199.

She is survived by her husband, Jon E. Sweet; two sons, Philip A. Sweet and Nathaniel L. Sweet of Cropwell; her mother, Francis Widegren of Melrose, Fla.; and a special aunt, Leota Osborne of Greensboro, N.C.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tad Thomason, Robert Thomason, Steve Moore, Walt Holder, Ryan Holder and Bob Barnett.

Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.

EMMA JEAN LEE

CHILDERSBURG Funeral service for Emma Jean Lee, 72, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Holy Faith Temple Church in Childersburg with the Rev. Tyrone Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Lilly Rhoden Cemetery.

Mrs. Lee died Oct. 6 at her residence. She was a member of Pleasant Valley C.M.E. Church and was retired from Avondale Mills.

She is survived by two daughters, Debra J. Lee of Childersburg and Loretta L. Borden of Sylacauga; five sons, Willie Lee III, Gregory Lee and James Lee of Childersburg, Kevin Lee of Killeen, Texas, and Kenneth Lee of California; seven sisters, Genzell Winston of Coatopa, Elnora Houze of Glen Cove, Shirley Hamilton of Cleveland, Ohio, Mary Lawson and Rosetta Johnson of Amityville, Rose Marie Hayes of Roslyn Heights, N.Y., and Catherine Russell of Waukegan, Ill.; three brothers, Lorenzo Winston of Sylacauga, Joe Nathan Winston of Coatopa and Jesse Winston of Kansas City, Mo.; 21 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Michael Stone, Melvin Taylor, Melvin Nix, James Roston, Roderick Keith, Ricky Bester and Deshun Lee.

Friends of the family will serve as flowerbearers.

The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home from noon until 9 p.m.

Community Funeral Home will direct the service.

RUFUS BURROUGHS

TALLADEGA Funeral service for Rufus Burroughs, 71, of 917 Knox St., will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary chapel with Dr. B.E. McKinney officiating. Burial will be in Talladega Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Burroughs died Oct. 6 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Burroughs and Susan Stockdale Burroughs; a sister, Jessie Burroughs and four brothers, James Burroughs, Smith Burroughs, John Burroughs and Fletcher Burroughs. He attended Westside School in Talladega and retired from AIDB with 28 years of service.

He is survived by one sister, Hattie Mae Patterson of Avon Park, Fla., and two brothers, George Burroughs of Talladega and Bennie Burroughs of Milwaukee, Wisc.

Pallbearers will be Willie Patterson Jr., John Patterson, Curtis Patterson, Jerome Patterson, Benny Burroughs Jr. and Rodrick Burroughs.

Honorary pallbearers will be Benny Burroughs Sr. and George Burroughs.

Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

WILLIAM GARRETT

ALPINE William Garrett, 68, of 440 Garrett Drive, died Oct. 10 at Citizens BMC.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary.

REGINALD VANDERBILT HILL

TALLADEGA Funeral service for Reginald Vanderbilt Hill, 59, of 114 1/2 Short Scott St., will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary chapel with the Rev. Lucian Hill Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery.

Mr. Hill died Oct. 9 at his residence. He served in the U.S. Army from March 5, 1966, until May 1, 1969. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucian Hill and Ruth Davis Hill. He graduated from Eastside Elementary School and attended Westside High School.

He is survived by sisters, Rose Marie Hill of Talladega, Louvenia Hill of Chicago, Ill., Lisa Davis of Copperas Cove, Texas and Dorothy Storey of Talladega and his brothers, the Rev. Lucian Hill Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., David Hill of Birmingham, Ronald Hill of Talladega and Eddie Hill of New York, N.Y.

Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.

Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary will direct the service.

GERTRUDE LENORA RICH PATJENS

DACULA, Ga. Funeral service for Gertrude Lenora Rich (Jackie) Patjens, 80, formerly of Alexander City, will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Sears Chapel Church in Rockford with the Rev. Walter Coleman and the Rev. Ricky Nabors officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Patjens died Oct. 10 in Dacula, Ga. She was born March 7, 1922, in Titus to James William and Queenie Wilma Thomas Rich. She was a member of the River Road Baptist Church. She worked as a registered nurse and was instrumental in opening of the nursing program at N.F. Nunnelley Technical School in Childersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lewis Patjens and her parents.

She is survived by one son, Ronald Patjens of Dacula, Ga.; two sisters, Martha Collins of Birmingham and Lois Nabors of Anniston; two granddaughters, one great-grandson, four nieces and two nephews.

The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m. until service time.

Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City will direct the service.

ODELL THOMPSON

TALLADEGA Odell Thompson, 58, of 210 Jemison St., died Oct. 10 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary.
