Dessie L. Bonner

Dessie L. Bonner, 84, a homemaker and member of the Laton Hill Baptist Church of Chatom, died July 13, 2007 in a Mobile hospital.

Survivors include three sons, Tharon Williams, Dennis Williams and Paul Williams, all of Chatom; two daughters, Joyce Holston and Judy Scarbrough, both of Mobile; four sisters, Muriel Moss, Daisy Caten and Lela Richardson, all of Chatom and Virginia Harris of Mobile; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were July 16 at the Laton Hill Baptist Church. Interment was in the Springbank Baptist Cemetery in Chatom with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Laton Hill Baptist Church.

Charles Gordon Fleming

Charles "Charlie" Gordon Fleming, age 82, died July 16, 2007 in a Mobile area hospital. He was a native of Salitpa and a resident of Grove Hill, where he was a member of the Peniel Baptist Church. A retired chief engineer with the Corp of Engineers and Warrior Gulf Navigation, Fleming was also a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include four daughters, Linda Xia of Birmingham, Shirley Miller of Lucedale, Miss. and Patricia Smith and Charlotte Rice, both of Grove Hill; sister, Bertha McLeod of Mobile; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted July 18 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson with the Rev. Shannon Moses officiating. Interment was in the W.A. Smith Cemetery in Grove Hill.

Sara Jane Lynch Reeves

Sara Jane Lynch Reeves, 61, died at her Jackson residence July 9, 2007. She was a cashier with Max Oil Co. and was a member of the Visitation Catholic Church in Jackson.

She is survived by a daughter, Sara A. Reeves of Jackson and a brother, John W. (Jude A.) Lynch Jr. of San Antonio, Texas.

A graveside memorial service was conducted July 13 at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson, directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson

Donald R. Taylor

Donald R. Taylor of Seaboard died at the age of 71 on July 11, 2007 at a Mobile hospital. He was a member of Chalker United Methodist Church of Seaboard. Taylor served two years in the Army, was a retiree of Alabama Power and attended the University of Alabama.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Raines Taylor of Seaboard; mother, Bertha Taylor Baxter of Seaboard; daughters, Donna (Daniel D. Hall Jr.) Taylor and Lynn (Eric) Rainwaters, both of Seaboard; brothers, Fred (Laura Lee) Taylor of Seaboard and Curtis Taylor of Tibbie; grandchildren, Erika and Sharla Rainwaters and step-grandchild, Paul O'Dell, all of Seaboard.

Services were July 13 at Chalker United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Harry Giles and Bro. Joe Goodman officiated with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Paul O'Dell, Brad Taylor, Leamon Taylor, Jade Taylor, Kyle McLaughlin and Lamar Rainwaters.

Mildred Fields Bettis

Mildred Fields Bettis, a retired educator of 30 years for the Washington County Board of Education, died July 14, 2007 at a local nursing facility. Preceded in death by her parents, Clara and George Fields, she was 72 years of age.

Survivors include a daughter, Valada (Christopher) Chijide, M.D. of Regina, Saskatchewan; son, Roseal Bettis Jr. of Sunflower; sister, Augusta F. James of Sunflower; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral hour at the Little Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church of Sunflower. The Rev. Dave Adams, pastor and the Rev. David Richardson will be the officiating ministers. Interment will follow in the Benjamin Franklin Fields Family Cemetery of Sunflower. Jackson Memorial Funeral Home is directing.

Myrtle Dawson Hoffman

Myrtle Dawson Hoffman, 87, died July 23, 2007 at a local hospital. She was a native of Mountain Creek and a resident of Mobile. Hoffman was a retired lunchroom worker with the Washington County Board of Education and a member of First Baptist Church of Wilmer. Her husband and son, Rupert Leon Hoffman Sr. and James Howard Hoffman, respectively, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Rupert Leon Hoffman Jr. of Mobile and Carl Hoffman of Chickasaw; daughter, Peggy Mills of Crestview, Fla.; sister, Lula Belle Register of Hoschton, Ga.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Terry Glasscock officiated the service in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom July 25. Interment was in the Chatom Cemetery in Chatom. Active pallbearers were Tony Hoffman, Jim Hoffman, David Hoffman, Todd Barbe', Todd Hoffman, Phil Hoffman, Joe Hoffman and Britt Keene.

Ida Ruth Pope Howard

Ida Ruth Pope Howard, died at a local health care facility July 20, 2007 at the age of 88. A member of Pine Level Baptist Church in Hobson, she was a native of Oxford, Miss. and a resident of Hobson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Buddy" Howard.

Survivors include a son, William K. Howard of Moss Point, Miss.; daughter, Pauline Taylor of Chatom; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The Revs. Ron Butler and Bobby Smith officiated funeral services July 22 at the Pine Level Baptist Church in Hobson. Interment was at the Jones-Beech Cemetery in Hobson with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing.

Active pallbearers were Bill Robbins, Lamar Beech, Norvel Jones, Gordon Sloat, David Pierson and Mark Beech. Honorary pallbearers were Audrey Beech, Connie Thompson and Lyle Beech.

Charlie Howard Loper

Charlie Howard Loper, 88, died July 20, 2007 in an automobile accident in State Line, Miss. A resident of Chatom, Loper was a retired operator from Ciba, a farmer and timber dealer. He was a member of Laton Hill Baptist Church in Chatom and a veteran of WWII and a tank driver for the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Loper of State Line, Miss.; a son, Tommy (Paula) Loper of Theodore; daughter, Ann (Jim) Overstreet of the Laton Hill community in Chatom; two stepdaughters, Bonnie White of Daphne and Teresa Pope of Midlothian, Va.; two brothers, Houston Loper of Jackson and Levon Loper of Chatom; three sisters, Minnie Lee Williams of Chatom, Alma Jean Cope of Montgomery and Beatrice Lee of Mobile; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy L. Loper, parents Miranda and Willie Loper and sister, Eula Mae Scarbrough.

Services were July 24 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom with interment in Laton Hill Cemetery in Chatom.

Mildred Fields Bettis

Edd Jackson Jr.

Edd Jackson Jr., 80, died July 19, 2007. He was a self-employed timber harvester for many years and retired from Allied Paper Mill and Boise after 27 years. Following his retirement he spent many hours hunting, fishing, farming and tending farm animals. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Deanda Jackson; three brothers, Andrew Jackson, Bill Jackson and A.C. Jackson; two sisters, Dorothy Jackson and Edna Frank.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Lou Moore Jackson; four daughters, Brenda (Kirt) Norwood of St. Stephens, Cynthia Faye Jackson of Rockville, Sandra (Evan) Wiggins of Leroy and Amie (Bernard) Gibson of Grand Bay; seven sons, Freddy (Katherine) Jackson of Pascagoula, Miss., the Rev. Robert (Bobbie) Jackson of Choctaw Bluff, David (Deloris) Jackson, Eric (Terri) Jackson and the Rev. Kevin (Sherri) Jackson, all of Jackson, Johnny (Cassie) Jackson of Detroit, Mich. and Kenneth Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio; five sisters, Rosie (Arthur) Dillworth of Hollywood, Fla., Alice (Joe) Sims of Orlando, Fla., Audrey (Arthur) Wilson of Shreveport, La., Annie (Joe) Smith and Adline Edwards, both of Cape Charles, Va.; three brothers, John (Geraldine) Jackson of Chicago, Ill., Henry (Rachael) Jackson of Salitpa and Fred Jackson of Cape Charles, Va.; 34 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Service was July 22 at the Mt. Olive No. 1 Baptist Church in Rockville with the Rev. Kevin Jackson, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson. Active pallbearers were his grandsons, sons-in-law and nephews. Honorary pallbearers were Freddy Jackson, Johnny Jackson Sr., David Jackson Sr., Kenneth Jackson, Kevin Jackson, Robert Jackson Sr. and Eric Jackson.

Jacob French

Jacob French, age 94, a lifelong resident of the Carlton community of Jackson, died July 22, 2007 at Jackson Medical Center. He was the son of Joseph French and Mary McKenzie French. He retired from Patrick Petroleum Oil Field and later from White Smith Lumber Company. French was a member of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church where he served as church school superintendent, trustee, church treasurer, choir member and steward until his health failed. He was the oldest member of the church and known throughout the county as a great gospel soloist whose specialty was the old time spirituals.

Survivors include his wife, Ida Bell French of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Adell (Robert Lee "Melvin") Jackson of Jackson; son, Tommy Lee (Sandra) French Sr. of Chickasaw; sister, Sarah Watkins of Jackson; and 14 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 27, 11 a.m. at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Georgia P. Nash, pastor and eulogist. Viewing will be today, July 26, 2-7 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Friday from 10 until the funeral hour of 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Church Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson.
