William "Ross" Spraggins Sr.

1920-2003

Funeral services for William "Ross" Spraggins Sr. of Dadeville will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Langley Chapel. Bros. Larry Hudson and James Bolan will officiate. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003.

Mr. Spraggins died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003. He was born Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1920. He was a retired textile worker and a farmer. He served in the U.S. Army Alabama National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Ruth Baker Spraggins of Dadeville; six sons, John Claude "Johnny" Spraggins and wife Betty Hovey of Opelika, David Adair Spraggins and wife Mary Frances Bolan, William Ross Spraggins Jr. and wife Polly Garrett, Jerry Wayne Spraggins, John Morgan Spraggins and wife Wilma Nell Hayes and James Andrew Spraggins, all of Dadeville; two daughters, Mary Louise Spraggins Finch and husband Donald C. of Mitchell, Ga., and Sharon Diane Spraggins Davis and husband, Chris of Alexander City; four brothers, David Spraggins, Winford Spraggins and Joel Spraggins, all of Opelika, and Richard Aubrey Spraggins of Dadeville; one sister, Floyce Nelson of Notasulga; 28 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Jim Spraggins and El Donnie Davis Spraggins; two sisters, Ethel Sherum and Sarah Hagans; two brothers, Bennie Spraggins and Raybon Spraggins; one son, William Grady Spraggins and one daughter, Linda Ruth Spraggins.

Langley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Norma Elaine Shaw

1922-2003

A private family memorial service for Norma Elaine Shaw, 81, of Rockford will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Shaw died Dec. 18, 2003, at Russell Medical Center. She was born March 5, 1922, in North Hampton, Mass., to Clifton C and Hazel Brewer Viggue of Londonderry, Vt.

She is survived by three sons, Barry Young and Dick Dunakey, both of Dadeville, and Steven K. Shaw of Rockford; one daughter, Kathleen C. Moore of Bremerton, Wash.; one brother, Ronald Viggue of Washington State; three sisters, Val Leach of Cohoes, N.Y., Joan Stewart of Cuttingsville, Vt., and Lois Childers of Maui, Hawaii, and one grandson, Jason Moore of Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Shaw and one daughter, Kimberly Shaw Rahr.

Alabama Funeral Home and Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.

James C. "Jimmy" Hayes Jr.

1953-2003

Memorial services for James C. "Jimmy" Hayes Jr., 50, of Goodwater will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Radney Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Joe Fain will officiate. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003.

Mr. Hayes died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at his residence. He was born Sept. 26, 1953, to James Clardy Hayes Sr. and Dorothy Sanders Hayes.

He is survived by two sons, Daniel Hayes and wife René of Jackson's Gap and Michael Hayes of Beulah; one daughter, Shari Hayes of Missouri; his parents, James C. Hayes Sr. and Dorothy S. Hayes, both of Goodwater; two sisters, Dottyrie Goodwin and husband W.L. of Valley and Leila Hayes of Montgomery; one brother, Terry Hayes and wife Denise of Goodwater; two grandchildren, Jacie Hayes and Madison Hayes of Jackson's Gap and five nephews, Matt McCune, Cody Hayes, Michael Hayes, Dustin Hayes and Brandon Hayes.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Goodwater Baptist Church, P.O. Box 283, Goodwater, AL 35072.

Radney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margot Juliane Marie Jagusch Balsar

1927-2003

Memorial services for Margot Juliane Marie Jagusch Balsar, 76, of Dadeville will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28,2003, at her residence (875 Windy Hill Road, Dadeville). All past and present friends are invited to attend.

Mrs. Baker died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Lake Martin Community Hospital in Dadeville. She was born March 29, 1927, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany to Christian Heinrich Ernhardt Geiger and Pauline Albertine Jagusch. She worked for many years as a seamstress and upholsterer. She was very kind and respectful to her friends, neighbors and all animals. She was a member of MENSA, played the piano, was a very hard worker and was extremely dedicated to her family.

She is survived by one daughter, Telse Geiger Saunders and husband Paul of Nashville; one son, Michael Balsar of Dadeville; three grandchildren, Chuck Phipps, Margo Myers and Julie Oliver; several great-grandchildren and her loving service dog, Toppy.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Geiger and her second husband, Harry V. Balsar; one son, Harry Gordon Balsar and her great-grandson, Brandon Phipps.

Radney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William David Blackwell

1936-2003

Funeral services for William David Blackwell, 67, of Gulfport, Miss., will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Radney Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bill Brown will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation was form 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003.

Mr. Blackwell died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at his residence. He was born Feb. 9, 1936, in Coosa County to William Thomas Blackwell and Janie Cornelia McCord Blackwell. He was a physical security specialist at the Naval Oceanographic Office. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He had a multitude of family and friends. He was a great handy man and enjoyed working on older cars. He will be missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Rosalind M. Blackwell of Gulfport, Miss.; three daughters, Belinda Leigh Blackwell of Gulfport, Miss., Edwina Mason of Montgomery and Pam Argood of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Tommie Forry of Montgomery and Margaret Taylor of Shreveport, La.; his father, William Thomas Blackwell of Gulfport, Miss., and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Janie Cornelia McCord Blackwell; one sister, Peggy Chandler and two brothers, Gerald Blackwell and Billy Blackwell.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3054 C McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36111-2203.

Clyde Chapman Forbus

Dec. 8, 2003

Mr. Clyde Chapman Forbus of Opelika, formerly of Alexander City, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be announced later by Radney's Funeral Home in Alexander City.

Herman L. Akridge

Herman L. Akridge, 57, died March 17, 2008 at the Washington County Infirmary in Chatom. A native and resident of Tibbie, he was a chemical operator for Hoechst Celanese Company and a member of the Tibbie Baptist Church in Tibbie. Herman Caroll Akridge, his father, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Nichols Akridge of Tibbie; two sons, Scottie (Lisa) Akridge of Tibbie and Eric (Melinda) Akridge of Mobile; his mother, Marcel Nell Patrick Akridge of Tibbie; a brother, Anthony "Anky" (Sharon) Akridge of McIntosh; one sister, Ilene Ziegler of Mobile; and four grandchildren, Allison Akridge, Caleb Akridge, Devin Akridge and Noah Akridge.

Services were March 20 at the Tibbie Baptist Church with the Revs. Al Brown, Ernest Tucker and Robbie Howard officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home directing.

Active pallbearers are Elvin Ross, Shawn Ziegler, Larry Nichols, Ronnie Nichols, Robert Orso Jr. and Henry Clay Dumas. Honorary pallbearers included Andy Nichols, Lloyd Howard, David Ross, Claude Coaker, George Jordan, Bill Rush, Tony Threadgill, Thelma Friths, Debra May, Sharon Webb, Denny Weaver, Glenn Gilley and Dewey Coburn.
