Johnny Alton Baker

1927-2003

Graveside services for Mr. Johnny Alton Baker, 76, of Opelika will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at the Alexander City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Monday, Feb, 3, 2003, at Radney Funeral Home.

Mr. Baker died Jan. 31, 2003, at Russell Medical Center. He was born April 24, 1927, in Tallapoosa County to Thomas Baker and Mamie Elizabeth Bryant Baker.

He is survived by his sister, Lillie Mae White and husband Millard of Dadeville and numerous nieces and nephews.

Walter Joseph Sweikhart

1925-2003

Funeral services for Walter Joseph Sweikhart, 78, of Montgomery, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at Alabama Funeral Homes Chapel in Dadeville. Rev. John Mann will officiate. Family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Mr. Sweikhart was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Washington, D.C. to Walter Otto and Lillian Marie Sweikhart. During World War II he served as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy until Dec. 23, 1945 and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 32 years of faithful and devoted federal service on Aug. 30, 1974.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Helen Urbas Sweikhart of Montgomery; four sons, George W. Sweikhart and wife Tina of San Diego, Stephen L. Sweikhart and wife Linda of Alexandra, Va., Joseph W. Sweikhart of Montgomery and Karl E. Sweikhart and wife Lynn of Boston; one brother, Earl W. Sweikhart of Punta Gorda, Fla.; five granddaughters, Erica R. Sweikhart, Christina Sweikhart and Denise C. Sweikhart, all of San Diego, Ashley E. Sweikhart of Birmingham and Sabrina Sweikhart of Boston.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alabama Funeral Home and Cremation Centers are in charge of arrangements.

Willie Louis Sutton

April 7, 2003

Funeral services for Willie Louis Sutton, 65, of LaFayette, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church. Rev. Robert Lee Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003 at Vines Funeral Home Chapel in LaFayette.

Mr. Sutton died Monday, April 7, 2003, at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Mae Sutton; one son, Gregory Sutton and his wife Cindy of Valley; one daughter, Elaine S. Harper and her husband Carl Sr. of Lanett; one goddaughter, Lyreshia Ware of Auburn; four brothers, Roger Presley of Alexander City, Evanelo Presley of Opelika, Linzie Brooks of Auburn and Nathan Brooks of LaFayette; seven sisters, Mattie Bell Echols of Camp Hill, Annie Bell Cotton of Lanett, Ruby Mae Huguley of LaFayette, Ann Sims of Auburn, Mary Sutton of Tuskegee, Virginia Thomas of Opelika and Nanette Ware of LaFayette and a host of other relatives and friends.

Vines Funeral Home, Inc. in LaFayette is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Bertie Justiss Stephenson

1912-2003

Graveside services for Lois Bertie Justiss Stephenson, 90, of Jackson's Gap will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Alexander City Cemetery. The Revs. Tim Harris and Wayne Cowhick will officiate. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2003.

Mrs. Stephenson died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Chapman Healthcare Center. She was born July 15, 1912, in Tallapoosa County to Thomas and Lula Cleveland Justiss. She worked for Russell Corp. as a sewing machine operator and was a member of Comer Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by one sister, Eunice Dennis of Jackson's Gap; two daughters-in-law, Alice Stephenson of Jackson's Gap and Jan Stephenson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; six grandchildren, John David Stephenson and wife Gayle of Suwanee, Ga., Kelly Brown and husband Keith of Fayetteville, Ga., Cindy Womack and husband Tony of Kennesaw, Ga., Troy Stephenson of Birmingham, Krista Stephenson and Meagan Stephenson, both of Chattanooga, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Nathaniel Stephenson and two sons, Stanley and Jimmy Stephenson.

The family will accept flowers or contributions may be made to Comer Memorial Baptist Church, 341 East Church Street, Alexander City, Ala., 35010 or to Children's Harbor, 1 Our Children's Highway, Children's Harbor, Ala., 35010-9534.

Radney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Tell Mitchell

1917-2003

Graveside services for William Tell Mitchell, 86, of Smiths Station, formerly of Coosa County, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Peace & Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Mitchell died May 27, 2003, at VA Medical Center in Tuskegee. He was born Feb. 10, 1917, to Tommy and Bertha Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife, Inez Mitchell of Smiths Station; one son, William T. Mitchell Jr. of Los Angeles; three brothers; sisters-in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Wright's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Aldora Knight Veasley

Aldora Knight Veasley of Rochester, N.Y., died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be announced later

Lorene Gordon Milam

1917-2003

Funeral services for Lorene Gordon Milam, 85, of Alexander City will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Comer Memorial Baptist Church. The Revs. Tim Harris and Donald Bailey will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, and will be at the church for one hour prior to funeral services.

Mrs. Milam died June 14, 2003, at Chapman Healthcare Center. She was born July 8, 1917, in Clay County to Mather Marvin Gordon and Mary Fannie Smith Gordon. She was a spooler operator at Avondale Mill and was a member of Comer Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Anita Jean Boone and husband Melvin of Alexander City; two sons, Roger Dale Milam and wife Sue of Birmingham and Rickey Lamar Milam and wife Diana of Jackson's Gap; one brother, James Q. Gordon of Alexander City; four grandsons, Scott Milam and wife April, Timothy Milam, Jeffrey Milam and Paul Milam; three granddaughters, Rebecca Milam, Donna Keel and husband Joe and Johnnie Prophitt and husband Mike and three great-grandchildren.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Comer Memorial Baptist Church, 341 East Church Street, Alexander City, Ala., 35010.

Jasper Richard McCollough Sr.

1925-2003

Funeral services for Jasper Richard McCollough Sr., 77, of Auburn will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Radney Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Richard McCollough will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillview Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

Mr. McCollough died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. He was born June 23, 1925, in Tallapoosa County to Lydle Jackson and Vicie Kitchens McCollough. He was the owner of Roto Rooter, a member of Abundant Life Church in Auburn and was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II.

He is survived by his son, the Rev. Richard McCollough and wife Linda of Auburn; one daughter, Sherry Pecchioni and husband Robert of Birmingham; two grandsons, Barry McCollough and wife Sheila of Alexander City and Jeff Benson and wife Anna of Windsor, Canada; three granddaughters, Danielle Halcomb and husband Bobby of Rocky Face, Ga., Brandy Herron and husband Jeff of Opelika and Kristi Tanner and husband Andy of Montgomery and 11 great-grandchildren.

Radney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
