Ohlen A. Wells
BUTLER — Services for Ohlen A. Wells, 85, were held on April 26, 2008 at Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro, MS with Rev. Wyman Bradley officiating. Interment followed at New Haven Cemetery in Millry.
Mr. Wells passed away on April 23 at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian. He worked as a pipe fitter building ships and was a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Wells is survived by his wife, Bernice Wells of Butler; one son, Michael Wells, of Chatom; three sisters, Jeanotte Clearman, Margaret Bishop, and Miriam Bradley, all of Meridian, MS; and two grandchildren, Chelsea Wells and Tyler Wells, both of Biloxi, MS.
Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Radford “Don” Burkette
MILLRY — Services for Donald Radford Burkette, 79, were held on April 21, 2008 at Millry Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Kendrick officiating. Interment followed in the Shady Grove Cemetery in Millry.
Mr. Burkette, son of the late Jethro and Viola Burkette, passed away on April 19 at his residence in Millry. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and the owner of Don’s IGA in Millry for 31 years.
He is survived by one daughter, Dalaine (James) Tinney; two grandchildren, Domini Odom and Ashley Wright; and six great grandchildren, Kylee Odom, Jace Odom, Carson Wright, Kennedi Driggers, Mason Elmore, and Maggie Elmore.
His wife Margaret Willene Stricklin Burkette preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were Darrel Brown, Tommy Loper, Terry Wright, Spencer Brown, Harry Driggers, and Larry Adams.
Phillips Funeral Home in Millry was in charge of arrangements.

Lorena Harris
LISMAN — Services for Lorena Harris, 58, were held on June 18, 2008 at Black Bluff Baptist Church in Whitfield with Dr. O.L. Sealey officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Ms. Harris, who was a homemaker, passed away on June 11 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, MS.
She is survived by three children, Beveril (Lorenzo) DuBose of York, David (Tracy) Harris of Mosinee, WI, and Michael Harris of Tuscaloosa; two sisters, Cherry (Robert) Coleman of Butler and Winne (Nathan) Presswood of Ward; 4 brothers, Joe (Sally) Rowe of Elyria, OH, Walter (Jena) Harris of Whitfield, Harold (Marilyn) Harris of Bellamy, and Taylor (Francine) Harris of Stone Mountain, GA; 8 grandchildren; one great god-son, Jaquavius DuBose; lifetime partner, Harry O’Field of Lisman; and a host of other family and friends.
Ms. Harris was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Corean Harris; her son, Willie Harris; and two brothers, James and John Henry Harris.
Family members served as pallbearers.
Weatherly Studdard Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

John Homer “Runt” McDowell
FRANKVILLE — Graveside services for John Homer “Runt” McDowell, 73, were held on June 24, 2008 at McDowell Cemetery, with Rev. James Bonner officiating.
Mr. McDowell was a retired Millwright for James River Corporation. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Boykin McDowell of Frankville; two sons, John Ray (Martha) McDowell of Chatom and Adam Jeffery McDowell of Frankville; one daughter, Chrissie (Frank) Land of Butler; 10 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Mr. McDowell was preceded in death by his parents, John Calhoun and Phelia Florence McDowell; his brother, Richard E. McDowell; and two sisters, Betty Louise and Mary Elizabeth McDowell.
Pallbearers were Gary Guinn, Luke Jordan, Chad Loper, Freddie Jowers, Arnold Singley, and Edward Clark. Honorary Pallbearers are Whitey Cummings, Eddie Burrell, Morris Copeland, Hugh Pinkerton, and James Flint.
Bumpers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

De Ellis Jackson
ATLANTA, GA — Services for De Ellis Jackson, 56, were held on June 22, 2008 at St. John’s CME Church in Butler, with Rev. James Larkin officiating. Interment followed in St. John’s Cemetery.
Mr. Jackson passed away on June 12 at the VA Hospital in Atlanta. He was a local businessman.
He is survived by his son, Tajuan Jackson of Riverdale, GA; his daughter, Kia Jackson of Fairburn, GA; his former wife, Marilyn Jackson; three brothers, Zollie (Annie) Jackson of Luverne, Johnny Jackson and James Earl Jackson, both of Butler; four sisters, Charlie Mae Tyson, Mattie Irene Scott, Pinkie Lee Kennedy and Emma Jean Jackson, all of Butler; one sister-in-law, Mary B. (Willie) Mitchell, of Butler; and a host of other family and friends.
Pallbearers were family members and friends.
Honorary Pallbearers were Zollie, Johnny and James Jackson.

Johnnie B. Johnson, Jr.
SILAS — Services for Johnnie B. Johnson, Jr., 55, were held on June 19, 2008 at Shady Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. T.L. Ware and Rev. Cleo McGrew, Sr. officiating.
Mr. Johnson passed away on June 13.
He was a long-time member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Malene Philon Johnson; three daughters, Corhonda (Rodney) Dailey, Roshanda Johnson and Wykita Johnson; one son, Spencer DeNard Johnson; three grandchildren; Ebony, Janacia, and Kaeden J’Allen; one brother, Jimmy (Lisa) Johnson; one adopted brother, Kraus Johnson; three sisters, Rhonda (Joe) Johnson, Sylvia Johnson, and Patricia (David) Miller; three sisters-in-law, Sara (Lorenzo) Scruggs, Rosie (Roy) Henry, and Brenda (Billy) Jones; one brother-in-law, Rex (Angela) Philon; and a host of other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Goldie Lee and Johnnie B. Johnson, Sr.
Pallbearers were nephews and cousins. Honorary pallbearers were Lorenzo Scruggs, Billy Jones, Joe Johnson, David Miller, and Rex Philon, Jr.

James Lanier “Bubba” Clark, Jr
JACHIN — Services for James Lanier “Bubba” Clark, Jr., 26, were held on June 23, 2008 at First Assembly of God Church in Butler with Rev. Scottie Fulcher officiating. Interment followed at Christopher’s Chapel Cemetery in Jachin.
Bubba was a forester with Clark Trucking. He passed away on June 21st.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanna Goodman Clark of Jachin; parents, James L. “Stink” and Sarah H. Clark of Jachin; two sisters, Robbie C. (Scotty) McKenzie of Butler and Dede C. (Jon) McCluey of Butler; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James O. Clark of Jachin. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents; Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Hall of Jachin.
Pallbearers were Scotty McKenzie, Jon McCluey, Morgan Reynolds, Daniel Johnson, Carl Brownlee, Roger Williamson, John Goodman, Patrick Robison, Jason Armistead, Jimmy James, and Scott Parten. Honorary Pallbearers were Hollis Ezell, Carl Mosley, Eric Robinson, Eric Roberts, Henry Wrenn, Tyrice May, Junior Dubose, George Chess, Mike Williams, Julius London, Nathan Hall, Andy Hall, Walter Hall, Agnew Hall, Johnny Harper, Harp Harper, Bill Hall, and Tim Hall.

Charlie McDonald
CULLOMBURG — Services for Charlie McDonald, 57, were held on May 24, 2008, at White Chapel Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Johnnie Heartfield, officiating. Interment followed at Little Place Cemetery.
Mr. McDonald passed away on May 18th at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian. He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserve.
His was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary E. Sashington McDonald, his wife Shirley McMillian McDonald, and his brother, Eddie.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia M. McDonald of Waynesboro, MS; his son, Patrick (Tomeka) McDonald of Petal, MS; four grandchildren, De’Mon’Traye S. McDonald, Taina K. Hill, Kaleb C. McDonald, and Zy’kerrion X. Curtis; one brother, Billy McDonald of Miami, FL; two cousins, Sharon (Wayne) Philon and Vivian (M.B. Sashington) McDonadl; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of many more family and friends.
Pallbearers and Flower bearers were family and friends.

Ruth Skelton Trotter
BUTLER – Graveside services for Ruth Skelton Trotter, 81, were held on June 18, 2008 at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Scottie Fulcher and Rev. Dan Nixon, officiating.
Mrs. Trotter, a retired seamstress from Vanity Fair, passed away on June 16th at Infinity Hospice in Meridian, MS.
She is survived by her son, Maxwell (Melissa) Skelton, of Butler; one brother, Robert Shirley of Laurel; two sisters, Dorothy Linder of Mobile and Lovetta Skoden of Clara, MS; one daughter-in-law, Sheila Skelton of Butler; four grandchildren, Scott (Amy) Skelton, Joan (Jamie) McCollum, Jessica Skelton, and Sarah Skelton; and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lucy Shirley; two husbands, Abner Skelton and Tom Trotter; and one son, Donnie Skelton.
Pallbearers were Roy Garrison, Jr., Brandon Skelton, Robert Bonner, James Skelton, Roy Coody, and Larry Dukes.
Honorary Pallbearers were Members of First Assembly of God Church in Butler.

J.D. Brand
LISMAN — Services for J.D. Brand, 86, were held on June 14, 2008 at Gilfield Baptist Church, with Dr. Cleo R. Brand, Jr., officiating. Interment followed at Gilfield Cemetery.
Mr. Brand was born March 1922, in Marion, to the late Lou Arthur and Rosa Brand. He passed away on June 5. He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie Bell; two brothers and three sisters, Arthur, Jr., Cleo, Rosetta Spillman, Betty Preister and Lucille Johnson; and one son, Collie C. Preister.
He lived in Evanston, IL, where he worked with Tapeco. After his retirement he moved to Lisman.
He is survived by one son, Raymond Ruffin; one brother and three sisters, George (Ruby) of Evanston, IL, Eliza Luckey, Joliet, IL, Clara Jackson, Evanston, IL, and Sara Evans, Fayetteville, NC; two daughters-in-law, Earline Preister, Meridian, MS, and Betty Ruffin, Evanston, IL; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.
Pallbearers and flower bearers were friends and family members.

Geneva DeLoach
WARD — Services for Geneva DeLoach, 70, were held on June 14, 2008 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, with Rev. Cleo McGrew Sr., officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Cemetery.
A member Millwood Primitive Baptist Church until she joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Mrs. DeLoach passed away on June 10th.
She is survived by her husband, James DeLoach; five children, Deborah (Lewis) Walker of Spring Valley, NY, Clay (Glenda) Bryant of Ward, Curtis (Diane) Bryant of Patterson, NJ, Brenda (George) Barcolleh of Conyers, GA, and Shirley (Melvin) Harris of Ward; and four brothers, Herbie, Herbert, Felix, and Isadore (Shirley) James; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one adopted daughter, Tomorrow Cherry of Baton Rouge, LA; and a mother-in-law, Mary DeLoach.
Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Alice Greene James and eleven brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers and flower bearers were family members and friends.

Martha Lee Rose
TUSCUMBIA — Services for Martha Lee Rose, 69, were held on June 12, 2008 at Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro, MS, with Rev. Mike Colston and Rev. Sam Lowery officiating. Interment was at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Aquilla.
Mrs. Rose, who passed away on June 10, was a graduate of Southern Choctaw High School and attended the University of Alabama. She retired after a career of 30 years with Avon Products of Atlanta, GA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James C. Matthews, Sr. and Dorothy Smith Matthews and her daughter, Tammy Rose.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Rose; two sons, Tim Rose and Mark (Wendy) Rose, all of Tuscumbia; one daughter, Machelle (Bob) Ballard of Alpharetta, GA; and her grandchildren; Matthew and Anna Beth Rose, Nicole Watson, Gabe Rose, Loderic Rose, Melissa Rose, Ryan Ballard, Heather Ballard, and Abby Rose all of Tuscumbia and Alpharetta, GA.
Pallbearers were Patrick Farris, Josh Matthews, Dr. Jim Matthews, Jr., B.K. Smith, Mickey Smith, Randy Smith, Ricky Smith and Waurice Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Church Building Fund, Aquilla United Methodist Church, c/o Lynn Smith, 3065 CR 3, Millry, AL 36558.

Rennie Giles Bedsole
GROVE HILL — Rennie Giles Bedsole, 60, died June 9, 2008 in a Mobile hospital.
Mrs. Bedsole was a native of Waynesboro, MS, and a resident of Grove Hill. She was a member of Tompkins Baptist Church and was active in the “Hearts In Action” group. Mrs. Bedsole served as the Town Clerk for the town of Fulton and was also employed in the accounting department at Scotch Lumber Co. in Fulton. She was coordinator each year for “Log A Load” and was one of that group’s founding members. She also served as Scotch Lumber Co. coordinator and representative.
She is survived by one son: John Darren Henson of Grove Hill; one daughter, Cristina Henson (Jeff) Campbell of Marietta, GA; and five grandchildren.
Services were held on June 12 at Tompkins Baptist Church with Rev. Don Newton and Rev. Don Whigham officiating. Interment followed at Gilbertown Cemetery in Gilbertown.
Pallbearers were John Gunn, Tim Gunn, Stacey Giles, Mike Norris, Dennis Drinkard, and Murphy Clarke. Honorary pallbearers were office employees of Scotch Lumber Co. and “Hearts In Action” group of Tompkins Baptist Church.

Jaunita Coxwell McGrew
GILBERTOWN — Services for Jaunita Coxwell McGrew, 79, of Silas, were held at Phillips Funeral Home in Gilbertown on June 12, 2008. Rev. Junior Long and Rev. Derrick Clark officiated. Interment followed at Isney Cemetery.
McGrew, daughter of the late Joe and Ester Coxwell, passed away on June 10 in Gilbertown.
She is survived by three sons; Hollis Coxwell (Clarice) of Silas, Lamar McGrew Jr. (Wanda) of Theodore, and Joel Ivey (Angela) of Ocean Springs, MS; one daughter, Louise Mazingo of Gilbertown; one sister, Sadie Long (Billy) of McIntosh; 11grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Edward McGrew; a son-in-law: Wayman Mazingo; a brother: Emory Coxwell; and two sisters: Mary Ivey and Nora Hyatt.
Pallbearers were Jacob Wilson, William Gunnels, Joe Wayne Gibson, Bryan Coxwell, Bubba McGrew and Jeff Busby. Honorary pallbearers were Lankford Coxwell, Walter Wilson, Dale Wallace, Lynn Stewart, Joey Coxwell, Joey Morris and Tyler Wallace.
Phillips Funeral Home in Gilbertown was in charge of the arrangements.
