Gwendolyn Mattox

Funeral services for Gwendolyn Mattox, 77, of Jones Chapel will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003 at Holly Pond Chapel, the Revs. Delwin Kilgo and J.L. McCombs officiating, with Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Sugar Creek.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mattox died Thursday, June 19 at her residence. She was born June 11, 1926 in Florida to William O. and Della Mae Holland Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Bellview Baptist Church in Jones Chapel.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Woodrow Turner of Oneonta; two daughters, Wanda Jean (H.C.) Loyd of Oneonta and Betty Annette Fowler of California; a stepdaughter, Shirley (Ernie) Christensen of Denver, Colo.; four sisters, Mary Eloise Adams of Blountsville, Lila Jean (W.L.) Allinder and Sandy (Glenn) Humphrey, both of Cullman, and Lorraine (Earl) Payne of Warrior; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Keith Loyd, Mark Baker, Michael Schultze, Jeremy Jones, Adam Boeckler and Daniel Boeckler.

Wilbur Burden

Funeral services for Wilbur Burden, 92, of Baileyton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday June 21, 2003 at Holly Pond Chapel, Glenn Berry officiating, with Burial in Baileyton Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burden died Thursday, June 19 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born April 30, 2003 in Alabama to Henry and Susie Lowe Burden. He was self-employed.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a son, Glenn (Peggy) Burden of Baileyton; a daughter, Jo Ann (Fred) McNabb of Guntersville; two brothers, James Burden of Arab and Bud Burden of Baileyton; three sisters, Lorene Wisner and Bernice Johnson, both of Cullman, and Audie Shedd of Baileyton; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Burden Jr., Berry Burden, Wade Burden, Jeremy Burden, Joe Burden and Lynn Burden.

Edna Jewell Nelson

Funeral services for Edna Jewell Nelson, 82, are at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003 at Westside Baptist Church, Darrell Briscoe and Dewey Briscoe officiating, with Burial in Oak Level Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nelson died Friday, June 20 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born July 23, 1920 in Carrollton County, Ga. to Columbus Amson and Cora Smith Pruett. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Nelson; two brothers, John Pruett and Dewey Pruett; and three sisters, Ruby Polk, Audrey Yarber and Alice Bailey.

Survivors include her son, James Byron Nelson of California; a sister, Elva L. Parker of Cullman; 10 nieces and four nephews.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to noon today at the funeral home.

Myrtle E. Umphrey

Funeral services for Myrtle E. Umphrey, 90, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Dee Lauderdale officiating, with Burial in Livingston Chapel Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Umphrey died Sunday, June 22 at Cullman Long Term Care. She was born Oct. 27, 1912 in Cullman County to Thomas A. and Fannie Harbison Benefield. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin Umphrey; a sister; and three brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan (Leon) Simmons and Bobbie Nell (Bobby) Cleghorn, both of Cullman; a son, Billy Ray (Helen) Umphrey of Cullman; two sisters, Madie Waters and Ethel Freeman, both of Cullman; seven grandchildren, Cynthia Adams, Whit Carter, Terry Cleghorn, Lisa Bates, Debbie Kline, Michael Umphrey and Kathryn Brandon; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family requests donations be made to Hospice of Cullman County or the church of your choice.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Flonnie Roxie Strickland

Funeral services for Flonnie Roxie Strickland, 78, of Cullman were Monday, June 23, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Steve Rodgers officiating, with Burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Strickland died Saturday, June 21 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 28, 1924 in Winston County to John and Lela Bartlett Hood. She was a retired machine operator at Ellis Embroidery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Allen Hood and Monroe Hood; and two sisters, Lena Finley and Lollie Wilbanks.

Survivors include her husband, Lelton Julian Strickland; a son, James Rickie (Brenda) Strickland; a brother, Charles Hood of Huntsville; two sisters, Pearl Hall and Carolyn Gordon, both of Cullman; and a grandson, Jason Rickie Strickland.

Visitation was Sunday.

Clara Eulala Morrison

Funeral services for Clara Eulala Morrison of Hartselle will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Home, Walter Blackman officiating, with Burial in Fairview West Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morrison died Saturday, June 21 after a 12-year battle with breast cancer. She was the first president of the North Alabama Regional Alcoholism Council in Cullman covering Lawrence, Limestone, Morgan and Cullman counties. She became a social worker for the state of Alabama in 1981 and retired after 11 years when she was diagnosed with cancer in 1992. Although her profession required her to help others, she always helped whenever she saw an opportunity.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Morrison.

Survivors include a daughter, A. Suzanne Morrison of Hartselle; her mother, Lula Quick; two sisters, Mayola Robertson and Deborah Brown, both of Hanceville; a nephew; and three nieces.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation was Monday.

Rev. Cecil C. Kelsoe

Funeral services for Rev. Cecil C. Kelsoe, 79, of Holly Pond were Monday, June 23, 2003 at Roswell Creek Baptist Church, the Revs. Duwayne Kelley, David Harper and Randy Burtram officiating, with Burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Arab-Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Kelsoe died Saturday, June 21 at his residence. He was born May 7, 1924 in Cullman County to George Washington and Cora Bradley Kelsoe. He was retired from Chicago Bridge and Iron Company in Birmingham. He was a Baptist minister for more than 35 years, having pastored at Plainview, Shady Grove and Roswell Creek Baptist Churches.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Velma Townson Kelsoe of Holly Pond; two daughters, Pam (Russell) Quinn of Arab and Sue (James) Cox of Holly Pond; two brothers, Rader Kelsoe of Arab and Charlie Kelsoe of Holly Pond; two sisters, Lucille Gandy of Holly Pond and Lillian Gaddis of Arab; five grandchildren, Amber (Patrick) James, Luke Cox, Adam Cox, Blake Cox and Whitney Quinn; and one great-grandchild, Emma James.

Pallbearers were Billy Clark, Ronnie McGriff, Roy Shedd, O.C. Townson, Eddie Clark, Phillip Kelsoe, Joel Sullivan and Mat McBride.

James M. Head

Funeral services for James M. Head, 82, of Lincoln, Neb. will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at Southern Heights Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Neb., with interment in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Head died Saturday, June 21. He was born in Falkville to Ezra and Zana Head. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the Civil Service. He was a member of the American Legion Post. No. 3 and a member of Southern Heights Presbyterian Church of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Head of Lincoln; two daughters, Patricia Sachs of Atlanta, Ga. and Deborah (Ted) Watson of Lincoln; a son, James Head Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Jerry and Amy Sachs, Tyler, Ryan and Katherine Watson; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Chad Head of Charleston, S.C.; and a sister, Gladys Allen of Good Hope.

Memorials may be made to Southern Heights Presbyterian Church.

Visitation was Monday.

Stella Lyndall O'Barr Travis

Graveside services for Stella Lyndall O'Barr Travis, 84, of Gardendale will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, the Rev. Leon Zalenski officiating.

Ridout's Gardendale Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Travis died Monday, June 23. She was born in Leeds to Arnold and Ardecia O'Barr. She was raised in Thorsby, Gardendale and White City. She was married to the late Robert Odell Travis and they resided in Collier's Center, Inglenook and Gardendale. She was a seamstress, the operator of an alterations shop in Tarrant, and a secretary-bookkeeper for Travis Heating Company for many years. She was a member of Inglenook Baptist Church where she served as a nursery worker. After moving to Gardendale, she became an active member of the Fidelis Class of Gardendale First Baptist Church. Her interests included cooking and flower gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; three brothers, Kenneth O'Barr, J.C. O'Barr and Donald O'Barr; and a sister, Ola Mae Hamm.

Survivors include three sons, Cecil (Gloria) Travis and Gary (Betty) Travis, both of Gardendale, and Ron (June) Travis of Inverness; two brothers, Milton (Libby) O'Barr of Knoxville, Tenn. and Melvin (Jane) O'Barr of Mobile; a sister-in-law, Lucille O'Barr of Birmingham; eight grandchildren, Deborah Sewell, Pamela Lewis, Alicia Farley, Amy Weeks, Ronald Travis Jr., Christopher Travis, Jeffrey Travis and Scott Travis; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Parkinson Association.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dan Cole Mitchell

Funeral services for Dan Cole Mitchell, 44, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Charles Chandler officiating, with Burial in Elmwood Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mitchell died Monday, June 23 at Woodland Medical Center. He was born in Cullman on March 1, 1959. He was a diesel mechanic for Penske Trucking.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dan Cole Mitchell Sr.; and a brother, Homer Wesley Mitchell.

Survivors include his mother, Maurine Parker of Falkville; his stepfather, Ronald Parker of Falkville; a son, Jonathan Mitchell of Hanceville; and three sisters, Dianne Richards of Cullman, Claire Edwards of Decatur and Janease Lawes of Jasper.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Avel H. Privett

Funeral services for Avel H. Privett, 80, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003 at Moss-Service Chapel, Pastor Bridgemon officiating, with Burial in Nesmith Methodist Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Privett died Monday, June 23 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born March 13, 1923 in Alabama to James Elbert and Nora Wilkens Hood. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Luther Privett; three sons, Ken (Nancy) Privett of North Carolina; Bruce (Connie) Privett of Michigan and Tim (Gerry) Privett of Alabama; three sisters, Lola O'Rear and Bernadine Cleghorn, both of Alabama and Madelene Mays of North Carolina; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today.

Martha Brewer

Funeral services for Martha Brewer, 91, of Double Springs were Friday, June 13, 2003 at Nichols Chapel in Double Springs, L.C. Gilbreath officiating, with Burial in New Hope Cemetery.

Nichols Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brewer died Wednesday, June 11.

Survivors include four daughters, Melvia Tidwell and Helen Alexander, both of Double Springs, Henrietta Posey and Elvia Cooper, both of Cullman; six sons, James Brewer of Wauchula, Fla., David Brewer of Wetumpka, Jimmie Brewer of Vinemont, Waylon Brewer of Nauvoo, W.M. Brewer and Ronald J. Brewer, both of Cullman; two sisters, Elizabeth Bonds and Polly Alexander, both of Double Springs; a brother, Barney Jones of Arab; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Frances Giambrone

Graveside services for Mary Frances Giambrone, 82, of Oneonta will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003 at Cleveland Cemetery, Dennis Martin officiating.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Giambrone died Tuesday, June 24 at Beverly Healthcare in Oneonta. She was born in Blount County to James W. and Mary Elizabeth Pass McHan. She was a retired insurance supervisor at Liberty National Insurance Company. She was of the Methodist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Vera McHan and Norine McHan, both of Blountsville.

Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
