William Robert 'Bill' Bland

Memorial services for William Robert "Bill" Bland, 54, were Saturday, June 14, 2003 at First Presbyterian Church in Florence, Dr. Larry Baskin and the Rev. Irving Rudolph officiating.

Elkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bland died Wednesday, June 11. He was a 1966 graduate of Coffee High School and a 1970 graduate of the University of North Alabama. He received an additional degree from Auburn University. His professional life was spent as a contractor. He was an elder at the First Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Robert Golson Bland; and his parents, John and Gladys Bland.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Mackey Bland; a son, John Bland; and a daughter, Elizabeth Bland; a mother-in-law, Jane G. Mackey, all of Florence; a sister, Carole Bland (Charles) Yust of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a brother, Dr. John (Betty Chapman) Bland of Birmingham; and a lifetime close friend, Dr. John Musgrove of Florence.

Ovell S. Lowe

Funeral services for Ovell S. Lowe, 73, of Boaz will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Rowan McRae Chapel, the Revs. Charles McDowell and W.C. Putman officiating, with Burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Rowan McRae Funeral Home of Boaz is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lowe died Thursday, June 26. She was born Feb. 4, 1930 to the Rev. Grady and Hazel Vaughn Scott. She was a member of Boaz Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Lowe Sr.; her parents; and her son-in-law, Tommy Cofield.

Survivors include two sons, Charles E. Lowe II and Douglas Lowe, both of Boaz; four daughters, Loretta Lowe, Reba Cofield and Rebecca Kay Mason, all of Cullman, and Diane Lowe of Attalla; three sisters, Vona Lee Bobo of Southside, Dean McDowell and Patsy Gross, both of Boaz; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and expected great-granddaughter, Emily Rose Cone.

Pallbearers will be Alan McDowell, Kenneth McDowell, Tim Holmes, Jim Gross and Anthony Cofield.

Fred Martin 'Pops' Hale

Funeral services for Fred Martin "Pops" Hale, 92, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Moss-Service Chapel, Charles Ervin and Dr. Ed Hayes officiating, with a Masonic graveside service and Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hale died Thursday, June 26 at his residence. He was born Oct. 28, 1910 to Johnson Benjamin and Della Roberts Hale. He was a member of The Flying Fifty, an organization that helped bring the King Edward Cigar Plant to Cullman. He was in Kiwanis for more than 50 years and a member of the Cullman Masonic Lodge and Shriners for 57 years. He worked for the Borden's Ice Cream Company for more than 40 years until he retired. He was burgermeister for Oktoberfest in 1995. He was a member of First Baptist Church since 1948 when he came to Cullman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Venice Burns Hale; three brothers, J.B., Hugh and Bobby Hale; and a sister, Virginia Macon.

Survivors include a daughter, Dottie Hale Batemon; a sister, Edith White of Interlocking, Fla.; two grandchildren, Doug Batemon II and Dawn (Jayson) Greer; four great-grandchildren, Dewey Batemon III, Martin Greer, and twins, Carson and Ida Lee Greer; and extended family member, Kim.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Cullman County.

Visitation was Saturday.

Charlotte Joan Cummings

Funeral services for Charlotte Joan Cummings, 56, of Cullman, are at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Seventh Street Baptist Church, the Revs. Steve Britt, Sam Hollis and Stanley Dye officiating, with Burial in Fairview Baptist Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cummings died Friday, June 27, 2003. She was born August 26, 1946 in Alabama to the Rev. John Thomas and Ethelene Hesterly Farmer. She was a self-employed merchant.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Dwight Cummings and her father.

Survivors include her husband, Robin Cummings; her mother; two sons, Charles Steven (Deborah) Cummings and Jason James Cummings; a sister, Becky Farmer (Bobby) Murphy; two brothers, John (Pam) Farmer Jr. and James (Debbie) Farmer; and two grandchildren, Cody and Carson Cummings.

Visitation was Saturday.

Marion Glenn Bailey

Visitation for Marion Glenn Bailey, 53, of Cullman, is 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Moss-Service Funeral Home. No funeral service is planned.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bailey died Thursday, June 29 at work. He was born April 13, 1950 in Georgia to John Clayton and Nellie Phillips Bailey. He was a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Pittenger; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Rutland and Sherry Elaine London; a sister, Sandra Parker; two brothers, Gregory Bailey and Gary Bailey; three stepdaughters, Candice Kinser, Sheena Johnson and Christy Kinser; and five step-grandchildren.

Rabon Eugene Heatherly

Funeral services for Rabon Eugene Heatherly, 64, are at 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, Larry Duke officiating, with Burial in Valley Springs Baptist Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Heatherly died Friday, June 27 at Princeton Hospital in Birmingham. He was born August 6, 1938 in Cullman County to Homer and Alice Lorene Johnson Heatherly. He was a steel fabricator.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his son, Keith (Jann) Heatherly of Cullman; a daughter, Tammy (Ronnie) Gipson of Blount County; a brother, Arthur Franklin (Sara) Heatherly of Cullman; two sisters, Mary Jane (Clyde) Saint of Cullman and Sherry (Roger) Crook of Cullman; very special friend Carol Watwood; and four grandchildren, Lindsay Heatherly, Haley Keith, Matthew Holmes and Wesley Shabel.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles Oliver Tilley

Funeral services for Charles Oliver Tilley, 93, are at 2 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2003 at Jones Chapel Methodist Church, Mark Mayo officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tilley died Friday, June 27 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Jan. 18, 1910 in Cullman County to Robert E. and Lydia Ann Lee Tilley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Sims Tilley; his parents; three brothers, Tom, Ophir and Bill Tilley; four sisters, Amy Hale, Pearl Burkes, Ocie Glover and Lillian Tilley; and a granddaughter, Kirsten Higginbotham.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosa Ann Jones of Fernandine Beach, Fla. and Carol Tilley Higginbotham of Callahan, Fla.; a sister, Utha Justice of Jones Chapel; four grandchildren, Alisa Herring, Carla Starling, Daphne Hinton and Jenny Higginbotham; and five great-grandchildren, Ashley Starling, Chelsea Starling, Bailey Herring, Caleb Herring and Oliver Hinton.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Earie Belle McBay

Funeral services for Earie Belle McBay, 84, of Cullman are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Curtis Cochran officiating, with Burial in Friendship Methodist Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McBay died Saturday, June 28 at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 11, 1918 in Morgan County to George Washington and Mary M. Lynn Russell. She was a housekeeper at Decatur City Schools.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, Ervin C. Knighten.

Survivors include her grandson, Charles Eugene Knighten; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Glenn Bailey

Glenn Bailey, 53, of Cullman died Thursday, June 26, 2003 in Jefferson County. No funeral services were held.

Moss-Service Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bailey was born April 13, 1950. He was a truck driver.

Survivors include his common-law wife, Debbie Pittenger; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Rutland and Sherry Elaine London; two brothers, Gregory Bailey and Gary Bailey; a sister, Sandra Parker; five stepgrandchildren; three stepdaughters, Candice Kinser, Sheena Johnson and Christy Kinser.

Visitation was Sunday.

Janie Othell King

Graveside services for Janie Othell King, 79, of Monteagle, Tenn., formerly of Hanceville, were Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Simcoe Cemetery, the Rev. Tim Barnett officiating.

Hanceville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King died Friday, June 27 in Monteagle, Tenn. She was born in Cullman County on Sept. 8, 1923 to Floyd Weaver.

She was preceded in death by her father; and her husband, Duel King.

Survivors include two daughters, Gail (Leon) Baty and Joan (Rickie) Harper, both of Hanceville; a sister, Jewel Brock of Cullman; four grandchildren, Lisa Bonner, Jason May, Jimmy May and Tammy McSwain; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Sunday.

James Robert Griffith

Funeral services for James Robert Griffith, 88, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, the Revs. Tom Hammons and Paul Campbell officiating, with Burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Griffith died Sunday, June 29 in Birmingham. He was born in Hanceville on Dec. 8, 1914.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gibbs Griffith of Hanceville; a brother, W. Clark Griffith; four sisters-in-law, Norma Compton, Mae Gibbs, Jonnie Grantham and Gladys Griffith; a brother-in-law, James Gibbs; six nephews; and four nieces.

Pallbearers will be Van Black, Johnny Grantham, Mike Gibbs, Jackie Griffith, Tim Compton and Cliff Jones.

Visitation was Monday.

Jeffery York

Funeral services for Jeffery York, 38, of Addison will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at Nichols Chapel in Addison, Mr. Bryant officiating, with Burial in Sardis No. 1 Cemetery.

Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. York died Sunday, June 29.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Nicole York.

Survivors include his father, Keith York of Addison; his stepfather, Harold Johnson; his mother, Linda Johnson of Decatur; his stepmother, Peggy York; two daughters, Brittney York and Ashley York, both of Vinemont; and a son, Jeffery Lee York.

Visitation was Monday.

Pauline Tyree

Funeral services for Pauline Tyree, 85, of Addison were Monday, June 30, 2003 at Liberty Baptist Church, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Nichols Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tyree died Saturday, June 28.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Lizzie Stephenson; two brothers, Bill Stephenson and Tab Stephenson; and two sisters, Rachel Tyree and Hazel Denson.

Survivors include a son, Lee Roy Tyree of Arley; two daughters, Loretta Webb of Decatur and Margie Fields of Jasper; a sister, Juildean Parris of Helican; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Sunday.

Ray Nell Thomas

Funeral services for Ray Nell Thomas, 68, of Blountsville will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at Blountsville Funeral Home Chapel, Danny Rumburg and Willie Earl officiating, with Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thomas died Sunday, June 29 at her residence. She was born in Louisville, Miss., to William O. and Essie Hinkle Hill. She was a homemaker, a member of Rock Springs Methodist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Ray Thomas of Blountsville; two sons, Sammy (Pam) Thomas, Patrick (Sonjia) Thomas, both of Blountsville; two sisters, Shirley Whitlock of Oneonta, Bobbie Land of Blountsville; grandson, Kevin Pentecost of Blounstville; and three great-grandchildren.
