James R. Legg

Graveside services for James R. Legg, 84, of Jasper will be at 10 a.m. today, July 5, 2003 at Welti Cemetery, Dink Lambert officiating.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Legg died Thursday, July 3 at Ridgeview Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 1, 1919 to Griffin Reno and Margaret Grace Mann Legg. He worked at Fairway Golf Bag Plant.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Nell Brooks Legg; two sons, Albert Reno Legg of Jasper and Paul (Shawn) Legg of Margate, Fla.; a daughter, Becky (Vince) Tentoni of Northport; four sisters, Nell White of Holly Pond, Jackie Adams of Gardendale, Florene Legg of Cullman and Reba Shackelford of Mobile; three grandchildren, David Brian (Laura) Bennett of Cullman, Jason Shane Bennett of Little Rock, Ark. and Benjamin Reno Legg of Margate, Fla.; two stepgrandsons, Brad and James of Margate, Fla.; and one stepgreat-grandson, Nathan of Cullman.

Visitation wil be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Mildred Tankersley Hacker

Funeral services for Mildred Tankersley Hacker, 90, of Cullman will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at Moss-Service Chapel, Dr. Bill Burkett officiating, with Burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hacker died Wednesday, July 2 at Woodland Village Health Care. She was born Jan. 23, 1913 to George and Delia Reio Tankersley. She was a bookkeeper for Buchmann Tire and worked as a clerk at the Cullman County Courthouse in her early years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry J. Hacker; and a brother, Wallace Tankersley.

Survivors include a sister, Pansy T. Scroggins of Montgomery; two nephews, Eddie (Kathy) Hacker of Cullman and Ed Tankersley; a niece, Suzie (Dale) Baylett of Marietta, Ga.; two great-nieces, Amy and Molly Hacker; and a great-nephew, J.J. Hacker.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Betty Sue Self

Funeral services for Betty Sue Self, 64, of Gardendale, are at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Moss-Service funeral chapel, Mike Harrison officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Self died Thursday, July 3 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham. She was born July 10, 1938.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Self; her father, Louis a. Pruitt; her son, Mancil Self; and Charles Collier.

Survivors include two sons, Wesley Self and Mike (Donna) Self; two daughters, Renae (Mike) Lovetto and Rhonda (Ronnie) Clark; her mother, Ruby Lee Pruitt; a brother, Paul (Susie) Pruitt; two sisters, Jean (Bill) Schenker and Esther Collier; seven grandchildren, Amber, Amanda, Tonya, Lindsey, Michael, Rachel and Seth; and seven great-grandchildren, Savannah, Braden, Gracie, Jada, Kayla, Kyle and Kelsey.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Opal Carlson Walker

A memorial service for Opal Carlson Walker, 80, of Cullman, are at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Greater Vision Ministries Church, Stanley Dye officiating.

Mrs. Walker died Friday, July 4, 2003 at Woodland Medical Center. She was born Jan. 7, 1923 to Patrick and Hester Tucker Carlton. She retired from Futurecraft with 17 years of service. She was a former member of Berlin Baptist Church and frequented Greater Vision Ministries in Cullman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Walker; and her parents.

Survivors include her son, Lon (Marlys) Walker of Lake Oswego, Ore.; two daughters, Bonnie (Randy) Walker/Wood of Cullman and Judyth (Paul) Whitman of Lebanon, Pa.; two sisters, Virginia Dobbins of Scott Depot, W.Va. and Mary Lockard of Charleston, W. Va.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Harry 'H.D.' Brock

Funeral services for Harry "H.D." Brock, 72, are at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003, Charles York and Victor Quick officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brock died Friday, July 4 at HealthSouth in Birmingham. He was born July 29, 1930 in Cullman County. He was a deacon at Mt. Hebron Church.

Mr. Brock was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Sandlin Brock; two brothers, Dwight Brock and Buel Brock; and a sister, Violet Smith.

Survivors include four sons; Michael (Karin) Brock of Cullman; Mitchell (Debbie) Brock of Cullman; Tim (Anna) Brock of Cullman and Scotty (Karen) Brock of Cullman; three daughters, Kathie Brock of Cullman, Karen (Greg) Camp of Cullman and Cindy (Mark) Milliner of Cullman; two sisters, Grace Quick and Shirley Chambers; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Saturday.

Garnette Murphree Bailey

Funeral services for Garnette Murphree Bailey, 72, of Birmingham, formerly of Holly Pond, are at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at Holly Pond Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Hughlen Murrphree officiating, with Burial in New Home Cemetery.

Mrs. Bailey died Saturday, July 5 at Beverly Healthcare East in Birmingham. She was born Jan. 14, 1931 in Cullman County to Ellie and Orabelle Easterwood Murphree. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Josh Bailey; and three brothers, Fred, Charles and Carroll Murphree.

Survivors include her son, David Bailey of Birmingham; her granddaughter, Shelby Bailey; and four sisters, Ondeene (Charles) Kelsoe, Evelynn (Ernie) Cain, Omalene (Don) Lamberth and Kellon (Eddie) Walker.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Brittany Dean Johnson

Funeral services for Brittany Dean Johnson, 18, of Cullman are at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Hanceville Funeral Home, the Rev. Perry Knight officiating, with Burial in Good Hope Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Johnson died Friday, July 4 in an automobile accident. She was born Oct. 22, 1984 in Birmingham. She had a passion for singing.

Survivors include her father, Perry Alan Johnson; her mother, Kathy Denise Weaver Johnson; a brother, Keith (Kristie) Bush; grandmother, Dean P. Johnson; grandparents, James and Carl Dean Weaver; and a nephew, Gavin Bush, all of Cullman.

Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Alice L. Alvis

Funeral services for Alice L. Alvis, 95, of Falkville, formerly of Cullman, are at 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at Moss Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Billy Wooten officiating, with Burial in Cross Roads Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Alvis died Saturday, July 5, 2003 at Decatur General Hospital. She was born Feb. 17, 1908 to James W. and Carrie Rush Yarbrough. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence W. Alvis; and her parents.

Survivors include her son, Max Alvis of Commerce, Ga.; two daughters, Gwendel Kelley of Huntsville and Goldie Gardner of Cullman; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Clara Belle Butler Jones

Funeral services for Clara Belle Butler Jones, 86, of Cullman, are at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Cross Roads Baptist Church, James Blackwood and the Revs. Doug Pitts and David Estes officiating, with Burial in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jones died Friday, July 4 at her residence. She was born Oct. 7, 1916 in Cullman County to John Jefferson and Elizabeth Mandy Smith Butler. She was a homemaker and a 40-year member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Aaron Jones; two sons, Billy Jones and Terry Jones, a daughter, Shirley Carter; and four grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd (Hilda) Jones of Cullman and Maxie (Alicia) Jones of Good Hope; two daughters, Violet (Gwin) Crump of Parrish and Diane (Jerald) Duskin of Cullman; a brother, Maxie (Charletto) Butler of Cullman; a sister, Audie Dungan of Hanceville; a sister-in-law, Frances (Max) Godsey of Grant; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Saturday

George Bernhardt Higgerson

Funeral services for George Bernhardt Higgerson, 91, of Nashville, Tenn., are at 1 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, the Rev. Kenneth Hester officiating, with Burial in Good Hope Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Higgerson died Friday, July 4 at Bordeaux Hospital in Nashville. He was born May 24, 1912 in Cullman County to James Thomas and Frieda Hoenig Higgerson. He was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, DeEtte Harbison Higgerson.

Survivors include his son, James T. (Dolores) Higgerson of Burton, Mich.; and his daughter, Janice Higgerson Bennett of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren Dan Higgerson of Flint, Mich;, Rebecca (Brian) Higgerson Johnson of Sacramento, Calif., Ron (Grace) Higgerson of Cullman, Kristie Higgerson (Michael) Berger of Sacramento, Calif. and Amy Bennett (Jimmy) Cockrell of Cullman; and six great-grandchildren, Stephen, Timothy and Kyle Higgerson of Flint, Mich., Justin Higgerson and Nichole and Rusty Cockrell, all of Cullman.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Linda G. Williams

Funeral services for Linda G. Williams, 58, of Bremen, are Monday, July 7, 2003 at the Kilgore-Green Funeral Home Chapel, with Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Williams died Thursday, July 3 at her residence. She was a retired Jasper postal worker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Williams; and her parents, Robert and Louise Barton.

Survivors include her daughter, Lena Pulliam (Jimmy) Culver of Addison; her son, Fanklin Todd Pulliam of Jasper; four grandchildren, Whitney Lynne Butler, Joseph Allen Butler, Justin Culver and Lorie Culver Locke; a sister, Betty Fowler of Jasper; a brother, Johny Barton of Jasper; and a special friend, Hollis "Doc" Cook.

Visitation is at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mae Rose Moro

Funeral services for Mae Rose Moro, 86, of Cullman, are at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at Sacred Heart of Cullman church, Fr. Kevin McGrath officiating, with Burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Moro died Friday, July 4, 2003. She was a member of Sacred Heart church, formerly a member of St. Aloysius of Bessemer. She was an oblate at St. Bernard Abbey.

Survivors include two daughters, Judi Allen (Wayne) Williams of Hattiesburg, Miss. and Dorothy (Tommy) Brooks of Cullman; and four grandchildren, Crystal Brooks, Allen Brooks, Todd Brooks and Troy Brooks, all of Cullman.

Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. today at the church. A rosary is at 7:30 p.m.

Chester Calvin Wren

Funeral services for Chester Calvin Wren, 66, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Hopewell Baptist Church, Truman Davis officiating, with Burial in Hopewell Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Wren died Sunday, July 6 at his residence. He was born Jan. 2, 1937 in Cullman County to Lee Jacob and Lillian Wilkins Wren. He was a plant supervisor at King Edward Cigar Plant and a member of the National Guard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Carl Wren.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Sue Cole Wren of Hanceville; a son, Randy (Revonna) Wren of Crane Hill; a daughter, Donna (Larry) McIntosh of Huntsville; two brothers, Cordis (Patsy) Wren of Vinemont and Jerry (Carol) Wren of Cullman; a sister, Joyce (Alton) Fortenberry of Cullman; five grandchildren, Jamie Wren, Stacie Baker, Cory Wren, Chris Nuss and Aaron Marlow; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary Baker and Matthew Nuss.

Visitation was Monday.
