Debra L. Roberson Farr

Graveside services for Debra L. Roberson Farr, 41, of Bastrop, La., formerly of Cullman, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 at Bartholomew Cemetery, the Rev. Allan Eppinette officiating.

Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop, La. is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Farr died Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop. She was an accountant for Golden Rod Broiler of Cullman. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her parents, J.D. and Joyce Roberson; a daughter, Patchez Farr; a sister, Cindy Adam; a brother, James A. Roberson; a grandson, Ethan Norwood; two nieces, April Johnson and Stephanie Turner; a great-niece, Layla Wall; and a great-nephew, J.T. Wall, all of Bastrop, La.

Pallbearers will be David Watt, Jamie Wall, Yancy May, Roger May, Bart May and Leroy Turner.

Honorary pallbearers will be William Gorman and Malcolm Tullos.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Harmony Baptist Church.

Velma Ruth Crews

Funeral services for Velma Ruth Crews, 64, of Logan will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 at Messmer-Goodwin Funeral Chapel, Jerry Fleming officiating, with Burial in Watts Union Cemetery.

Messmer-Goodwin Funeral Home of Warrior is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crews died Monday, Aug. 18.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bennie and Lillian Osmer; a brother, Raymond Ferrell Osmer; and two husbands, Roland Goodwin and Bryant Crews.

Survivors include two sons, Roger Dale Goodwin of Panama City, Fla. and Richard Scott (Pat) Goodwin of Warrior; a brother, Charlie (Syble) Osmer of Vinemont; two sisters, Kermit Franklin of Enterprise and Margaret (Glynn) Elliott of Logan; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and childhood friend, Fay Weichler.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Treasure Lou Gupton Jacobs

A crypt side service for Treasure Lou Gupton Jacobs (Sister Miriam), 72, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Nashville, Tenn., Bishop James Niedergeses officiating. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Indianapolis, Ind., at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 23 the Revs. Joseph G. Riedman and J. Nicholas Dant as celebrants.

Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home of Nashville, Tenn. is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jacobs died Saturday, Aug. 16 in Indianapolis of cancer. She was born Nov. 12, 1930 in Nashville, the eldest child of John A. and Donna Stephenson Gupton. She was the first grandchild of John A. and Laura Duggan Gupton and the great-granddaughter of Lawrence Alexander Gupton. She attended schools in Nashville, graduating from St. Cecilia Academy before entering the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Cullman, where she excelled as a teacher and taught at many grade schools throughout Alabama and Pensacola, Fla. After retiring in Indiana, she homeschooled nieces and nephews in Indiana. After serving as a nun in the Order of St. Benedict for nearly 20 years, she left to return to private life, teaching in the school system of Indianapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Jacobs; her parents; a sister, Donna Joyce Gupton Kinney Gosnell; and three aunts, Treasure Gupton Waller, Daisie Gupton Hardaway and Lela Southerland.

Survivors include a son, Chad (Amy) Jacobs; a stepson, Victor Jacobs of Chicago, Ill.; a grandson, Noah Jacobs; two brothers, John Lawrence (Sharon) Gupton of Vacaville, Calif. and David Alexander (Valerie) Gupton of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Laura Gupton Lane of Walnut, Calif.; a half-brother, John A. Gupton of Nashville; a half-sister, Bernadean Michaela Gupton McKelway of Lexington, Ky.; eight nieces and nephews, Hall Hardaway, Janette Hardaway Smith, Jacque Waller Adair, Buddy, Mary, Sarah, Ann and Skippy Southerland; and best friend, Cathy (Jack) Lehigh.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to Sacred Heart Monastery, P.O. Box 2040, Cullman, Ala. 35056.

Hazel Max Smith

Funeral services for Hazel Max Smith, 87, of Clarksville, Tenn. will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003 at Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Scott Whitt officiating, with Burial in Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith died Monday, Aug. 18 at Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville. She was born in Caplin, New Mexico on May18, 1916. She was the former owner of a mattress and upholstery business in New Mexico. She was of the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Lily Cole Coffee; and her husband, Emmit H. Spurgeon.

Survivors include two sons, Emmit L Spurgeon of Clarksville, Tenn. and Bobby R. Spurgeon of Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren, Emmit L. Spurgeon II, Denis Edge, Teri Spurgeon, Robert Spurgeon, Mike West and Cathy West; a sister, Merle Cole of Cannon City, Colo.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 2000 Charlotte Ave., Nasvhille, Tenn., 37203.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Zelma Burgess Nelson

Funeral services for Zelma Burgess Nelson, 72, of Holly Pond will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at Holly Pond Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Horace Hall officiating, with Burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nelson died Wednesday, Aug. 20 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Birmingham. She was born Jan. 31, 1931 in Cullman County to M.L. and Ida Belle Shaw Burgess. She was a farmer and a cafeteria worker at Holly Pond School. She was a member of Holly Pond First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Cecil "Pete" Burgess, James "Red" Burgess and Gladys "Charlie" Burgess.

Survivors include her husband, E.C. "Cecil" Nelson of Holly Pond; four sons, Mike (Charlotte) Nelson of Newnan, Ga., Wendell (Martha) Nelson of Holly Pond, Tim (Stephanie) Nelson of Arab and Mark Nelson of Athens; a daughter, Kelly Nelson of Holly Pond; a brother, Kenneth "Cotton" Burgess of Birmingham; two sisters, Faye Taylor of Birmingham and Lyndell House of Holly Pond; five grandchildren, Katie Nelson, Sally Nelson, Khristi Nelson, Cody Nelson and Rebecca Nelson; and a great-grandchild, Shalyn Moran.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Curtis Johnson

Funeral services for Curtis Johnson, 76, of Logan will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, the Rev. Steve Rodgers officiating, with Burial in Pleasant Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson died Tuesday, Aug. 19 at his residence. He was born July 6, 1927 in Marshall County to Joel Monroe and Louvenia Weaver Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lurtis and Burtis Johnson; and seven sisters, Fanny Belle Segars, Maggie McBrayer, Emmer Hyde, Myrtle Smith, Gertrude Stringer, Mary Teague and Nolar Woody.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Kanaday Johnson of Logan; two sons, Roy Monroe (Julie) Johnson of Indiana and Dennis Wayne (Yong Ae) Johnson of Washington; a daughter, Vernile Lou (James) Gilley of Cullman; five grandsons, Jimmy Gilley, David Gilley, Steven Gilley, Lee Johnson and Jason Johnson; three granddaughters, Theresa Newell, Lynne Johnson and Jeanne Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Gilley, Nathan Newell, Taylor Gilley and Greycee Gilley; and five stepgrandchildren, John Couch, Jason Couch, James Couch, Joseph Couch and Becky Woods.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Curtis Quick

Funeral services for Curtis Quick, 75, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Wayne Nuss officiating, with Burial in Center Hill Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Quick died Wednesday, Aug. 20 in Cullman. He was born in Center Hill on Nov. 20, 1927 to Lum and Evie Webb Quick. He was a member of Michigan Masonic Lodge No. 587 in Garden City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Quick of Center Hill; two sons, Mike Quick of Phelan and Randy (Julie) Quick of Center Hill; a daughter, Teri Reaid of Center Hill; a sister, Carolyn Davis of Long Beach, Miss.; two brothers, Bryon R. Quick of Blountsville and Paul V. Quick of Welti; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Reaid, Kayla Quick, Ashley Jones and Lisa (Jimmy) Jones.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Emma Bussey

Funeral services for Emma Bussey, 80, of Hanceville will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, with Burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bussey died Tuesday, Aug. 19 in Cullman. She was born in Blount County on Nov. 24, 1922.

Survivors include her husband, James O. Bussey of Hanceville; two sons, James D. (Darcy) Bussey of Naples, Fla. and Kenneth F. Bussey of Hanceville; and a sister, Nora Roberts of San Francisco, Calif.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Herschel Leon Greathouse

Funeral services for Herschel Leon Greathouse, 85, of Lafayette, formerly of Garden City, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, Leon Greathouse officiating, with Burial in New Bethel Cemetery in Warrior.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Greathouse died Thursday, Aug. 21 in Lafayette. He was born Dec. 4, 1917 in Alabama to Jack and Vinnie James Greathouse.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie (William) Harmon of Lafayette; a sister, Eleanor Greathouse of Garden City; and a brother, Oscar "Beaver" Greathouse of Garden City.

Visitation was Friday.

Albert Jessie Givens

Funeral services for Albert Jessie Givens, 89, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Carl Malin officiating, with Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Crane Hill.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Givens died Thursday, Aug. 21 at his residence. He was born April 9, 1914 in Lauderdale County to Jonathan and Lester Savannah Umphrey Givens. He was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Albert Givens; and a daughter, Eunice Chaney.

Survivors include his wife, Lester Samantha Trussell Givens; four sons, Dinkey (Mary) Givens, Thelbert Givens, Johnny (Tammy) Givens and Danny (Delisa) Givens; three daughters, Velma Powell, Nellie (Ed) New and Shelby Givens; 40 grandchildren; and 93 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Claudia Assad Davis

Memorial services for Claudia Assad Davis, 56, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of California, Pa. will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003 at Transfiguration Church in Marietta, Ga.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davis died Satuday, Aug. 9. She was born Sept. 28, 1946. She graduated from California, Pa. where she received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She was a teacher in Atlanta City Schools from 1970-1976. She was co-owner of Davis Pest Control Services of Sandy Springs in Atlanta, Ga. from 1973. She also operated Critter Sitters in Sandy Springs.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Assad.

Survivors include her husband, Sammy Davis; a son, Todd Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; a grandson, Jamie of Atlanta, Ga.; her mother, Pasqua "Patty" Assad of Woodstock, Ga.; a brother, Al Assad of Kennesaw, Ga.; and two sisters, Renee Assad Medve of California, Pa. and Riva Assad Sutherland of Cullman.

William Christopher Alexander

Funeral services for William Christopher Alexander, infant, of Logan will be at noon Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003 at Moss-Service Chapel, Tommy Graves officiating, with Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born and died Wednesday, Aug. 20 at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his parents, William Brandon and Ammy Marie Jones Alexander; grandparents, Karen and Phillip Marion, Steve and Deborah Jones, Allen and Diane Kilgore; and great-grandparents, Roy Sanford and Jane Jones.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon today at the funeral home.

Elvie Kennon Rhodes

Funeral services for Elvie Kennon Rhodes, 66, of Cullman are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the funeral home.

Mr. Rhodes died Friday, Aug. 22 at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

Lillie Mae Burden

Funeral services for Lillie Mae Burden, 90, of Danville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003 at Oak Grove Church, Rusty Hodges officiating, with Burial in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burden died Friday, Aug. 22 at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born Feb. 22, 1913 in Winston County to Frank and Minnie Patterson Dutton. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim Burden; and a son, James Burden.

Survivors include her best friend, Harold Denton; a sister, Alta Roy of Cullman; five nieces; and three nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
