Michael Murphree

Funeral services for Michael Murphree of Addison will be at noon Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at Nichols Chapel, Sam Parker officiating, with Burial in Addison Church of God cemetery.

Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Murphree died Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham.

Survivors include his wife, Lynnita Murphree of Addison; a daughter, Tracee Ball of Addison; a son, Michael L. Murphree of Tuscaloosa; two sisters, Deborah Massey of Florence and Anglia Johnson of Cullman; two brothers, Jeff Murphree of Gadsden and Chris Murphree of Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Julius Baker

Funeral services for Julius Baker, 93, of Hanceville, are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Home, Josh Craft officiating, with Burial in Bethlehem East Cemetery in Hanceville.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Baker died Thursday, Sept. 25 at Hanceville Nursing Home. He was born in Cullman County on Dec. 13, 1909 to John Thornton and Lillie Sapp Baker.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a son, Johnny Baker of Hanceville; a daughter, Betty Stewart of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Amiel Baker of Hanceville; a sister, Marie Rice of Dodge City; six grandchildren, Matt Boyd, Misty Creel, Jennifer Mullin, Jeffery Nunn, Joshua Nunn and Charlotte (Roger) Arnold; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burton Burdick

Memorial services for Burton Burdick, 96, of Addison will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at Fairview Baptist Church in Double Springs, the Revs. John Briscoe and Buddy McCullough officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burdick died Thursday, Sept. 25 at his residence. He was born Jan. 26, 1907 in Houston. He was the middle of 11 children born to Frank Oscar and N. Catherine Hill Burdick.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Hester Burdick; a son, Burton Burdick Jr.; an infant granddaughter, Robin Burdick; and an infant great-grandson, Randall Dale Schoonover.

Survivors include a son, Robert L. Burdick of Addison; five daughters, Nina Vono of Haleyville, Jean Hall of Winberley, Texas, Mildred Scheel of Spokane, Wash., Carolyn Hunsaker of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla. and Lane Adams of Louisville, Ky.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Addison United Methodist Church, Carrie Hester Burdick Foundation, Addison School Library Fund, Addison Rescue Squad or Addison Masonic Lodge-Shriner's Hospital.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Zeda Linton

Memorial services for Zeda Linton, 90, of Pelham will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003 at Vinemont Baptist Church.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Linton died Friday, Sept. 26. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens. For 38 years, she was the owner of Athens Bootery.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Herbert M. Linton.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynn L. Terry of Pelham; a son, Johnny T. Linton of Athens; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Freda D. Stahl.

Albert John Grobe Jr.

Funeral services for Albert John Grobe Jr., 58, of Cullman are at 11 am. Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Rev. Warren Ruland officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Grobe died Friday, Sept. 26 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Elmhurst, Ill. on Oct. 22, 1944 to Albert John Sr. and Helen Krefft Grobe. He was senior project engineer at Delphi Saginaw. He worked his way through college as a handyman for Itasca Hardware and as a welder for International Harvester. Upon earning his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Valparaiso University in 1966, he worked for General Motors Components Division as a project engineer. His projects included the energy-absorbing steering column, which protected drivers' chests by collapsing in the event of a crash, and the "lock-out" steering column, which deterred theft.

He transferred from Saginaw, Michigan to Athens in 1976, where he aided in initial production floor layout. He served in various capacities to include laboratory manager and product line manager for Saturn steering columns and plastic injection molding components.

Mr. Grobe served the local community at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and school as well as the Cullman German Club. At St. Paul's, he served as PTA president and chairman of the stewardship and trustee committees.

He also served as Cullman's Oktoberfest burgermeister in 2000.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Gilbreath Grobe of Cullman; two sons, John (Jennifer) Grobe of Indianapolis, Ind. and Mark Grobe of Fort Payne; a sister, Karen Kroeger of Itasca, Ill.; and two grandchildren, Maddie Grobe and Jake Grobe.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Paul's Lutheran School.

Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hoyt 'Bob White' Butler

Funeral services for Hoyt "Bob White" Butler, 70, are at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, Larry Duke officiating, with Burial in Jones Chapel Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Butler died Friday, Sept. 26 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 5, 1933 in Marshall County to Anderson and Emma Watson Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Roy Higgins, Anderson Butler Jr., Homer Higgins, Odis Higgins and Jesse Butler; and a sister, Ollie Butler.

Survivors include his wife, Nellidean Thompson Butler; a son, Larry (Betty) Butler of Hanceville; four daughters, Reba (Dale) Haley of Houston, Brenda (Mark) Whisenhunt of Gold Ridge, Donna (Neil) Pierce of Baileyton and Amy (Mike) Kneece of Battleground; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Davison and Annie Ferguson.

Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Julius Baker

Funeral services for Julius Baker, 93, of Hanceville are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, Josh Craft officiating, with Burial in Bethlehem East Cemetery in Hanceville.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Baker died Thursday, Sept. 25 in Hanceville. He was born in Cullman County on Dec. 13, 1909 to John Thornton and Lillie Sapp Baker.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lavada Kanaday Baker; and his son-in-law, Ernie Stewart.

Survivors include a son, Johnny Baker of Hanceville a daughter, Betty Stewart of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a brother, Amiel Baker of Hanceville; a sister, Marie Rice of Dodge City; five grandchildren, Matt Boyd, Misty Creel, Jennifer Mullin, Jeffery (Ulaunda) Nunn and Joshua Nunn; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Saturday.

James A. 'Jim' Singleton

Funeral services for James A. "Jim" Singleton, 76, of Birmingham are at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003 at Gardendale Chapel, Keith Adams officiating, with Burial in Springhill Cemetery in Cullman County.

Gardendale Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Singleton died Friday, Sept. 26. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church. He loved gospel singing and preaching. He loved to joke with everybody.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Singleton; and a stepson, Rayburn C. Osborn.

Survivors include three daughters, Neita Singleton, Helen Allen and Cindy (Chris) Clark; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Amos 'Buster' Edward Akers

Graveside services for Amos "Buster" Edward Akers, 51, of Independence, Kan., will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003 at Beech Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Akers died Saturday, Sept. 20 at Mercy Hospital. He was born May 7, 1952 in Cullman to Mildred Doris Akers. He was raised and educated in Cullman. On June 23, 1989 he married Evon K. Bitson in Grand Rapids, Mich. He worked for Cook's Pest Control for a number of years as well as various other companies in Michigan before he moved to Independence in 2000.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Survivors include his wife, Evon Akers of Cullman; two stepchildren, Melissa Allen of Lowell, Mich. and Michael Bitson of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three brothers, Roy Trussell of Houston, Texas, Randall Trussell of Holly Pond and Donald Trussell of Hanceville; three sisters, Tina Dalton and Bobbie Jo Johnson, both of Houston, Texas, and Gloria Petree of Holly Pond; five stepgrandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Independence, Kan.

Hazel L. Craven Brown

Funeral services for Hazel L. Craven Brown, 80, of Barberton, Ohio will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Jerry Lankford officiating, with Burial in Simcoe Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brown died Sunday, Sept. 28 at Manor Care Facility Home. She was born May 4, 1923 in Cullman. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Henry and Nora Irene Latta Craven; her husband, Enis A Brown; and her brother, Harold J. Craven.

Survivors include four sons, Hulon Brown of Florida, Bendon (Donna) Brown of Akron, Ohio, Gerald (Patsy) Brown of Winder, Ga. and Rickey Brown of Cullman; three daughters, Linda (Larry) Davidson of Barbertown, Ohio, Peggy Tiffner of Akron, Ohio and Vicky Brown of Cullman; three brothers, John (Agnes) Craven of Cullman, Dewey (Thelma) Craven of Oneonta and Gary (Jean) Craven of Gadsden; three sisters, Ruth Stephens of Cedartown, Ga., Betty (Melvin) Jordan of Warrior and Sandy Perretta of Athens, Ga.; 20 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Virginia Mattie Lou Jones

Funeral services for Virginia Mattie Lou Jones, 85, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, J.C. Graves officiating, with Burial in Etha Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jones died Tuesday, Sept. 30 at her residence. She was born May 13, 1918 in Cullman County to Marron V. and Maggie Jane Morrison Hanes. She was a homemaker and a member of Vinemont Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clyde L. Jones; three brothers, Laborn Hanes, Mayo Hanes and John R. Hanes; and a sister, Inez Nobinger.

Survivors include a brother, Buster Hanes of Cullman; and four sisters, Naomi Vogel, Ludie Hebert and Ollie Farley, all of Cullman, and Rossie Fugate of Ohio.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Paul Duke Jr.

Funeral services for Paul Duke Jr., 77, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at Moss-Service Chapel, Samuel L. Parker and H.L. Taylor officiating, with Burial in Bethlehem Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Duke died Thursday, Oct. 2 at Baptist Medical Center-Princeton. He was born Feb. 7, 1926 in Alabama to Paul A. and Lilly Hyde Duke. He was a retreader and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Helen McDonald Duke; four daughters, Karen Duke, Janet Duke, Beverly Duke Leith and Carol Duke Cleghorn; a son, Bobby Duke; a sister, Opalean Lovern; a brother, Albert Duke; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday.
