TALLADEGA Gladys Garrett, 68, of 55 Knoxville Homes, died Dec. 15 at her residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Sims Funeral Service.


SYLACAUGA Funeral service for Anne Harper Hadley, 74, will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home chapel in Sylacauga. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga.

Mrs. Hadley died Dec. 16 at Sylacauga Health Care. She was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Orlando, Fla. She was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Harper Aldrich, and her parents, Catherine and Arthur Harper.

She is survived by one son, Rick Hadley of Orlando, Fla.; two daughters, Linda Carter of Alexander City and Nancy Grabowski of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Buddie Harper and Kenny Harper of Melbourne, Fla.; one sister, Florence Miner of Hendersonville, N.C.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will accept flowers or contributions to Lakeside Hospice, P.O. Box 544, Pell City, Ala., 35125 or the American Heart Association, 1449 Medical Park Drive, Birmingham, Ala., 35213.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga will direct the service.


TALLADEGA Mary Alice Hall died Dec. 16 at Sunset Inn.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Usrey Funeral Home.


ALEXANDER CITY Funeral service for Dwight Donald Jackson will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Armour's Memorial Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Larry Shealey officiating. Burial will be in Armour's Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Jackson died Dec. 10 at Baptist Hospital in Montgomery. He was born July 29, 1959, to Helen and Leroy Jackson in Tallapoosa County.

He is survived by two brothers, Tommie Jackson of Huntsville and Ricky Jackson of Alexander City; two sisters, Linda Maxwell and Vicky Jackson of Alexander City; his grandmother, Susie Young; his grandfather, Jake Young Jr.; his great-grandmother, Alice Meadows of Alexander City; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Armour's Memorial Funeral Home in Alexander City will direct the service.


COLUMBUS, Ga. Funeral service for David M. Josey Sr., 70, was Friday at Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Green officiating. Burial was in Parkhill Cemetery.

Mr. Josey died Dec. 10 at St. Francis Hospital after a three year battle with cancer. He was born March 17, 1932, in Ft. Benning, Ga. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Robinson Josey and Louie Ellis Josey, and a son, Chris Josey. In 1950, he graduated from Talladega High School and in 1958 he graduated from Jacksonville State University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War where he received the United Nations Korean Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Until his retirement in 1994, he was store president of Western Auto of Columbus. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jonnie Josey; a daughter, Kathy Josey Dickens of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; a son, David M. Josey Jr. of Columbus; four brothers, William Josey, Louie Josey, George Josey and Howard Josey of Talladega; and four grandchildren.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Fairview Baptist Church-Arsie Building Fund, 2931 Reese Road, Columbus, Ga., 31907.

ALEXANDER CITY Alesia Carol McNeal died Dec. 15.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Armour's Memorial Funeral Home.


TALLADEGA Funeral service for Maeoma Satterwhite, 80, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Danny Bannister and the Rev. Harold Bannister officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Memorial Park.

Mrs. Satterwhite died Dec. 14 at Talladega Health Care Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County and was a Baptist by faith. She was retired from Crown Textile and was preceded in death by her husband, Otis N. Satterwhite.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Satterwhite and Johnny Satterwhite of Talladega; one brother, Allen Thrower of Talladega; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Shane Satterwhite, Jay Satterwhite, Allen Peek, Glen Hollingsworth, Grady Thrower and Dewayne Hurst.

Usrey Funeral Home will direct the service.


PELL CITY Graveside service for James Edward Shields Sr., 64, will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Manchester, Tenn.

Mr. Shields died Dec. 16. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Kaye Chambers; his mother and father, Judge David and Arlie Shields Jr.; and a brother, David William Shields III. He was born and raised in Forest Mill, Tenn., which is in Coffee County. He grew up on a farm there in Forest Mill. He was a graduate of Manchester Central High School and attended Middle Tennessee State University. Mr. Shields and his family came to Birmingham in 1964 and he was employed by Moss-Thornton Construction, where he served as a supervisor and assisted in the construction of the Talladega International Super Speedway. In the mid 1970s, Mr. Shields went to work with Joe Money Machinery Inc. In 1977 he and his family moved to Pell City. He purchased The Corner Grocery in September of 1980 and later opened Shields Old Time BBQ. In 1993 he opened Shields Corner Store on Alabama 34 in Pell City. In 1996 he opened Shields Old Time BBQ. He also was very active on his farm raising cattle. He was a member of the St. Clair Cattleman's Association and the Red Elephant Club.

He is survived by one daughter, Jaimie Kaye Barrows (Jerry Wayne) of Pell City; one son, James Jr. (Cindy) of Talladega; nine grandchildren, Ambrae Kaye, Trisha, Doyle III and Megan Crawford, Heather, Jennifer, Rhianna, James III and David Shields; one great-granddaughter, Makinzie Kaye Crawford and two brothers, Dr. John A. Shields (Jackie) of Brentwood, Tenn., and Dr. Sam J. Shields (Mayet) of Delano, Calif.

Donations may be made to Lakeside Hospice, P.O. Box 544, Pell City, Ala., 35125.

Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the service.


SYLACAUGA Funeral service for Bradley Shane Smith, 7 months, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Frank Young and the Rev. Micky Bell officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga.

The infant died Dec. 15 at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

He is survived by his father, Johnnie Del Smith of Sylacauga; his mother, Karen Rena Smith of Sylacauga; and his grandparents, Pam Smith and Johnnie Smith of Sylacauga, Tina Medley and Cliff Medley of Sylacauga and Revonda Hughes and Otis Hughes of Ashland.

Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga will direct the service.


CAMP HILL Funeral service for Willie James Smith will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Murray's Chapel A.M.E. Zion with the Rev. John Fluellen officiating. Burial will be in Camp Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Dec. 15 at Russell Medical Center. He was born July 6, 1921, in Georgia.

He is survived by friends, Geneva E. Pearson and her husband, Robert Pearson, of Camp Hill.

Armour's Memorial Funeral Home in Alexander City will direct the service.


TALLADEGA Funeral service for Grover C. Spurling, 80, will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Talladega Funeral Home chapel with Pastor S.T. Janney officiating. Burial will be in Midway Memory Gardens.

Mr. Spurling died Dec. 16 at Citizens BMC. He was a native of Georgia and had lived most of his life in Talladega County. He was a retired foundryman.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Spurling of Talladega; eight sons, Grady Spurling, Tony Spurling, DeWayne Spurling, Danny Spurling and Charlie Spurling of Talladega, James Spurling of Roanoke, Leslie Spurling of Lincoln and Benny Spurling of Anniston; two daughters, Mary Johnson of Talladega and Marsha Holmes of Talladega; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 until 9 p.m.

Pallbearers will be David Spurling, Michael Spurling, Grady Spurling Jr., Steven Spurling, Nicholas Spurling and Bill Matson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Spurling and D.J. Spurling.

Talladega Funeral Home will direct the service.


JEMISON Gladys Odell Gurley Thackerson, 86, of Jemison, born in Clay County, left this world on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, 12:15 p.m. at Brookwood Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Arthur R. "Pete" Thackerson, and sons, Richard K. Thackerson and Clarence O'Dell "Buddy" Thackerson.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons, Ann T. (Bill) Hurst and Bobbi T. Stewart of Jemison, Sara Thackerson of Alabaster, John Arthur Thackerson of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Sammy (Cindy) Thackerson of Birmingham. There are nine grandchildren: James "Jimmy" Hurst of Foley, Scott Thackerson (Donna) of Palmerdale, Raynette (Mike) Ellison of Jemison, Tammy Howell of Atlanta, Steve (Michelle) Thackerson of Vestavia, LeAnna Hurst of Jemison, Michael Stewart of Pensacola, Shellie (Craig) Rinaldi of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Brandon Endress of Jemison; and six great-grandchildren.

Gladys was a native of Talladega. She was a member of Rocky Mount UMC, Jemison, where she served as president of the United Methodist Women organization. She also served the children and shut-ins for many years. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Clanton. Gladys enjoyed giving her prizewinning needlepoint and other craft work to others. Most importantly, she was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Martin's Funeral Home, Clanton, Tuesday, Dec. 17, 5-8 p.m. The Memorial Service will be held at Martin's Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Midway Memorial Gardens, Jemison.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Williard Frederick and the Rev. Scott Thackerson.

Martin Funeral Home in Clanton will direct the service.


GOODWATER Daniel Todd died Dec. 16 at Russell Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Wright's Funeral Home.
