Billy Ray Banks

Funeral services for Billy Ray Banks, 67, of Childersburg will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Radney-Smith Funeral Chapel, the Revs. Dale Banks and Darrell Banks officiating, with Burial in Talladega Springs Cemetery.

Radney-Smith Funeral Home of Sylacauga is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Banks died Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Empire on Feb. 19, 1936. He was retired from the U.S. Army and had served in Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Etta Phillips Banks; and his daughter, Billie Joyce Banks.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Banks of Childersburg; two daughters, Shelia Aymond of Vancleave, Miss. and Cathy Pigg of Cullman; two sons, Floyd Curtis Banks and Bobby Ray Banks, both of Childersburg; a sister, Doris Bridges of Jasper; three brothers, Gene Banks and Harold Banks, both of Jasper and Michael Banks of Bremen; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Annie Beatrice New

Funeral services for Annie Beatrice New, 83, of Vinemont will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Joe Gamble officiating, with Burial in Bethsadia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. New died Thursday, Dec. 11, at Woodland Medical Center. She was born May 10, 1920, in Cullman County to Frank and Josie Rooker Schultz. She was a homemaker and a member of the Senior Circle at Woodland Village Health Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Daniel M. New; two sons, Jack McArthur New and Billy Joe New; a daughter, Levondel "Sue" Brown; and a great-grandson, Weston Jay Burnham.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Ray (Annette) New and John Paul (Connie) New of Cullman; two daughters, Flora Mae (Duane) Brown and Dora "Jo" (Earskin Ballenger) White of Cullman; two brothers, Frank Archie Schultz of Cullman and Herbert Hoover Schultz of Winter Haven, Fla.; a sister, Freda Guin of Missouri; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Winnell Hood Wiggins

Funeral services for Winnell Hood Wiggins, 77, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Moss-Service Chapel, with Burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wiggins died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Briarcliff Nursing Home in Alabaster. She was born June 24, 1926, in Alabama to Tom and Ora Hood. She was a computer pattern operator with Porter Mills.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Talmadge W. Wiggins.

Survivors include a son, J. Michael Wiggins; a daughter, Kay (Scott) Shabel; three grandchildren, Clayton, J.W. and Shelbi Shabel; a brother, Donald Hood; and four sisters, Grace Myrick, Flora Cook, Doris Tidwell and Maggie Sutton.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Hulett Calvin Cantrell

Funeral services for Hulett Calvin Cantrell, 66, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Leon Mauldin officiating, with Burial in Concord Baptist Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cantrell died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Woodland Medical Center. He was born Jan. 30, 1937, in Baileyton to Hulett Welmer and Zelzie Irene Green Cantrell. He was a laborer with Apel Machine Shop.

He was preceded in death by parents.

Survivors include two sisters, Joan (Bobby) Pender of Hanceville and Bonnie (Mike) Thompson of Jenkinsburg, Ga.; four nephews, Ricky Pender of Athens, Josh Pender of Auburn, Rocky Nelson of Atlanta and Mike Leak of San Antonio; and two nieces, Tami Lawley of Denver and Kim Hayes of St. Augustine, Fla.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Purnia M. Herndon

Funeral services for Purnia M. Herndon, 95, of Blountsville will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Blountsville Funeral Chapel, Greg Lyles and Ted Blalock officiating, with Burial in Blountsville Cemetery.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Herndon died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Medical Center Blount-Oneonta. She was born in Royal to Alex L. and Harriett Adams Bryan. She was a homemaker and a member of Cleveland First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis L. Herndon; a daughter, Lenda Owen; two grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; and her parents.

Survivors include three sons, Ellis E. (Joan) Herndon and Irvin (Betty) Herndon, both of Blountsville, and John L. (Carolyn) Herndon of Bessemer; three daughters, Geraldine Whitfield of Birmingham, Peggy (Frank) Nabors of Auburndale, Fla., and Brenda Herndon of Blountsville; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Michael Herndon, Wayne Whitfield, Allen Owen, Bryan Herndon, Eddie Owen, John Owen and Greg Owen.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ramon Richards

Funeral services for Ramon Richards, 53, of Belvidere, Tenn. will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Watson-Gamble Chapel, the Rev. Bob Hill officiating, with Burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Huntland, Tenn.

Watson-Gamble Funeral Home of Winchester, Tenn. is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Richards died Thursday, Dec. 11, at his residence. He was born in Walker County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis C. and Annie L. Stewart Richards; and a brother, Joseph Lee Richards Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Richards of Belvidere, Tenn.; his grandmother, Lunie Stewart of Cullman; a stepson, Clint Sutherland of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two foster children, Trae Clark and Fallon Partin, both of Belvidere, Tenn.; three brothers, Lavern (Shirley) Richards of Hanceville, Marlin (Gail) Richards and Ronnie Richards, both of Cullman; and four sisters, Mary (Arvin) Evans of Hartselle, Shelby (Randy) Dunn of Hanceville, Sherrie (Charles) Coan of Danville and Diane Gholson of Adamsville.

Visitation will be at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ruby Mae Taylor

Funeral services for Ruby Mae Taylor, 89, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Moss-Service Chapel, Steve Rodgers and Dudley Brock officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor died Friday, Dec. 12, at her residence. She was born Nov. 13, 1914, in Alabama to John William and Atha Marilla Ellenburg. She was a plant worker with Golden Rod Hatchery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Frank Taylor; her parents; two brothers, Grady Russell and Curtis Russell; and four sisters, Ginny Freeman, Lizzie Scott, Lola Jones and Rosie Davenport Carr.

Survivors include three daughters, Estelle (Billy) Bradley, Myrtle (James) Robertson and Josie Trantham; seven grandchildren, Dexter (Joan) Perkins, Dennis (Sharon) Perkins, Vickie (Wayne) Fulmer, Tony Trantham, Marty (Ellen) Robertson, David (Penny) Robertson and Jason (Michelle) Robertson; a great-grandchild; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. today.

Winnell Hood Wiggins

Elbert Ercel Ponder

Memorial services for Elbert Ercel Ponder, 88, of Destin, Fla., formerly of Cullman, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Destin, Fla., the Rev. Bob Graves officiating.

St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Destin, Fla. is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ponder died Thursday, Dec. 11, in Destin. He was born May 16, 1915, in Cullman to George Washington and Pearl Sims Ponder. He attended the Columbia military Academy in Tennessee, Birmingham Southern College, and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

In Cullman, Elbert owned and operated the Ponder's Department Store from 1938 until 1961, where they sold everything from thread to mules. He also developed Larkwood subdivision in Cullman in the '60s, which was ahead of its time in that it had wide winding streets, a country club, tennis courts, and neighborhood covenience. Elbert then became the president of Lanson Industries in Cullman, and manufactured casements for the military.

Elbert was the President of the Kiwanis Club, twice served as president of the Cullman Chamber of Commerce and was an active member of the Flying 50, an organization whose mission was to bring business to the Cullman area. Elbert also helped to organize little league football. The first players from that team went on to the University of Alabama to be on the National Championship team under Bear Bryant. The Ponders were members of the Grace Episcopal Church of Cullman.

Elbert served as an infantryman with the 142nd Regiment, 36th Division, during World War II, in the European Theatre and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Elbert and his wife Frances have been in the Destin area since 1975, and retired and moved to Destin in 1985 from Cullman. After retiring to Destin, Elbert was a partner in the development of Indian Bayou Golf and Country Club. He was also a founder of the Greening of Destin organization. He and his wife Frances were members of St. Simon Episcopal Church in Fort Walton Beach and St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Destin.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Ruth Duke Ponder, two daughters, Joyce Cahoon of Birmingham and Suzy (Bill) Eidson of Destin; four grandchildren, Kara Haggard and Doug (Julie) Eidson, both of Atlanta, Greg (Kathie) Eidson Auburn, Robert Haggard III of Topeka, Kan.; six great-grandchildren, Chase, Morgan, Audrey, Riley, Elizabeth and Patrick; and a sister, Melda Ragsdale of Cullman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Elbert Ponder Memorial Fund, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1658 Destin, Fla. 32540, or Grace Episcopal Church, 305 Arnold St. NE, Cullman, Ala. 35055 or to Hospice Okaloosa-Walton, 101 Hart St., Niceville, Fla. 32578.

Wayne Winfrey

Funeral services for Wayne Winfrey, 50, of Hanceville, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Dudley Brock officiating, with Burial in Mt. Grove Congregational Cemetery in Hanceville.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Winfrey died Friday, Dec. 12, in Hanceville. He was born June 23, 1953, in Cullman to Henry Earl and Ellon Elizabeth Wilbanks Winfrey.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Lynn Warrington Winfrey of Wichita, Kan.; one daughter, Brandy Winfrey Phillips of Cullman; one sister, Wanda Butler of Hanceville; two brothers, David Winfrey (Rose) Collum of Hanceville and Bruce (Louise) Winfrey of Cullman; two grandsons, Chance Phillips and Tyler Phillips, both of Cullman; and one granddaughter, Desiree Phillips of Cullman.

Visitation was Saturday.

Betty Robertson

Funeral services for Betty Robertson, 68, of Holly Pond will be announced by Holly Pond Funeral Home. Mrs. Robertson died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003.

John E. Fuller Jr.

Funeral services for John E. Fuller Jr., 79, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at Moss-Service Chapel, Chaplain Jerry Fleming officiating, with Burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fuller died Friday, Dec. 12, at his residence. He was born April 16, 1924, to John E. Sr. and Edith Alma Roberts Fuller. He was a farmer and worked for the Alabama Highway Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Charles Leo Fuller; and one brother, Willis Edward Fuller.

Survivors include his former wife and the mother of his children, Mevelene Pack Fuller; one son, Bobby (Rita) Fuller of Cullman; three daughters, Carolyn (Jimmy) Frederick of Jonesboro, Ga., Shirley (Ed) Voegele of Cullman and Melba (Larry) Stewart of Hanceville; one brother, William Parker (Lula Mae) Fuller of Cullman; one sister, Mary (Howard) Powe of Cullman; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Clifford A. Herfurth

Funeral services for Clifford A. Herfurth, 90, of Cullman, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at Moss-Service Chapel, Pastor Bob Kurtz officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Herfurth died Friday, Dec. 12, at his residence. He was born Feb. 26, 1913, to Adolf and Frieda Leigeber Herfurth. He was a building contractor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jewell D. Herfurth.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Dobbins of Cullman and Judy Giles of Holland, Mich; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
