Paul Leo DeLaura

Funeral services for Paul Leo DeLaura, 94, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Drs. Edwin Hayes and Bill Burkett officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. DeLaura died Monday, Jan. 5, at Woodland Village Health Care Center. He was born Sept. 9, 1909, in Mt. Disco, N.Y. He was a stone mason, volunteer firefighter and spent much of his spare time playing semi-pro baseball and soccer. During his semi-pro baseball career, he played against Lou Gehrig and batted against Satchel Paige. Gehrig was a student at Columbia when his team played the 15-year-old DeLaura's team in a parks and recreation league. He was the oldest living military veteran in Cullman County. During World War II, as a member of the 84th Army Camouflage Battalion he was a camouflage expert and made things safer for the infantry. He worked for General George Patton in Africa. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of the American Legion. He sang in the choir at First Baptist Church of Cullman for 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary DeLaura and Ripple Maxcy DeLaura; his parents; and siblings.

Survivors include a son, Paul A. "Paulie" DeLaura of New York; two daughters, Florence "Baby" (George) O'Neil of Ohio and Joan "Bunny" (Sam) Simon of N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Maggie Thomas Hooper

Funeral services for Maggie Thomas Hooper, 84, of Blountsville, formerly of Holly Pond, were Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Holly Pond Funeral Chapel, with Burial in Union Grove Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hooper died Sunday, Jan. 4, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born July 15, 1919, in Cullman County to Andrew and Mary Mitchell Thomas. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Arbell Hooper; and two sons, Roger Arlin Hooper and Carl Leon Hooper.

Survivors include five sons, Johnny Hooper, Robert A. Hooper, Junior Hooper, and James (Joyce) Hooper, all of Blountsville, and Jerald Hooper of Childersburg; three daughters, Gracie (Ronnie) Jones of Hanceville, Fran (David) Creel and Jeanette Trusty, both of Blountsville; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Sarah Estelle Coppock Sanford Shoemaker

Funeral services for Sarah Estelle Coppock Sanford Shoemaker, 90, of Holly Pond will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Holly Pond Funeral Chapel, Tom Williams officiating, with Burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shoemaker died Monday, Jan. 5, at her son's home in Holly Pond. She was born Dec. 26, 1913, to John Luther and Ellen Rowena Shaw Coppock in Walter. She was a retired seamstress from Cullman Lingerie. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Holly Pond, having joined in 1928. She served her church in a number of capacities and was its music director for many years. She also sang with the Cullman First Senior Choir and East Cullman Baptist Association Senior Singers. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Baileyton Chapter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Ethridge Sanford and Denzer Shoemaker; and three brothers, Bryce Coppock, Harold "Cotton" Coppock and Winford "Bump" Coppock.

Survivors include two sons, Kerwin (Nelle) Sanford of Annville, Pa. and Dewitt (Deborah) Sanford of Holly Pond; a stepson, Dale (Julie) Shoemaker of Bethesda, Md.; a stepdaughter, Virginia (Kenneth) Kretzschmar of Blount County; a sister, Louise (John) Patterson; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Coppock of Pleasant Grove and Erlene "Smitty" Coppock of Athens; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church of Holly Pond's building fund.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

Dorothy Tingle Hasenbein

Memorial services for Dorothy Tingle Hasenbein, 90, of Falkville will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Sacred Heart Monastery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hasenbein died Monday, Jan. 5, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born March 3, 1913, to Henderson and Effie Turner Tingle. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Hasenbein; a brother, Lester Tingle; and two sisters, Hazel Tingle and Ruth Weissend.

Survivors include three sons, Donald (Catherine) Hasenbein of Cullman, Wayne (Gale) Hasenbein of Fultondale and George (Barbara) Hasenbein of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sacred Heart Monastery, P.O. Box 2040, Cullman, Ala. 35051.

No visitation is planned.

Lois Jeanette Bates

Funeral services for Lois Jeanette Bates, 84, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Bethsadia Church, Marvin Brock officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bates died Monday, Jan. 5, at Woodland Village Health Care. She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Cullman County to Matthew and Bertha Hicks Thompson. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Feltus Bates; and two sons, Elwin J. Bates and Sherrell C. Bates.

Survivors include three sons, Douglas E. (Audrey) Bates, Carlton (Sandra) Bates and Kevin J. (Jeanie) Bates, all of Cullman; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Bates of Cullman; a brother, Dallas Thompson of Cullman; a sister, Agnes Brock of Cullman; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Tuesday.

George Lavon Hardin

Funeral services for George Lavon Hardin, 56, of Gadsden will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Arab-Heritage Chapel, Larry Perkins officiating, with Burial in New Brashiers Chapel Cemetery.

Arab-Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hardin died Sunday, Jan. 4, in Gadsden. He was born Feb. 5, 1947, in Marshall County to L.M. and Selestine Bennefield Hardin. He was a retired mechanic and a member of New Home Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a son, George Lavon Hardin Jr. of Cullman; a daughter, Christina Leann Farr of Cullman; two sisters, Mary Jo Martin of Gadsden and Dorothy Hardin of Holly Pond; and three grandchildren.

Lola Mae Estella Beulah Thomas Williams

Funeral services for Lola Mae Estella Beulah Thomas Williams, 94, will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, Keith Gambill officiating, with Burial in Garden City Cemetery at a later date.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams died Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Marshall Manor Nursing Home in Guntersville. She was born Oct. 1, 1909 in Blount County to John Henry and Lois Elizabeth McAnnally Thomas. She was a gardener. She enjoyed flower arranging, reading, crafts and bingo. She was a member of the Baptist Church, Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, a lifetime member of the National Federation of Garden Clubs and was a Red Cross instructor in home nursing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Edmund Williams Sr.; and six siblings, Gordon, Curtis, J.D., Minnie Bell, Essie Pullen and Lillian Seibert.

Survivors include two daughters, Beatrice Williams (Donald) Mathews of Guntersville and Elizabeth Curtis Williams of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Frank Edmund (Marsha) Williams Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Stewart Randall Maney (the former Pok Son), William and Patrick of Richmond, Va. and Gainesville, Ga., Steven Roger (Etta) Maney and Lauren of South Lyon, Mich., Pamela Renee Chaney, Christopher and Bradley of Baton Rouge, La., and Jennifer (Swati) Williams of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Elizabeth (Frank) Jenkins of Cullman; and a brother, Clarence (Thelene) of Garden City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Garden City Park and Walking Trail, Lola Williams Memorial Fund at Peoples Bank of North Alabama.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Vernon Ward

Funeral services for Vernon Ward, 91, of Hanceville will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Elders Chester Leeth and Hiram Avery officiating, with Burial in Colony Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ward died Wednesday, Dec. 31 in Cullman. He was born in Cullman County on March 25, 1912 to Warren and Edonia Haley Ward. He served for over three years in the Army during World War II and earned the Purple Heart. He was a member of the First Pentecostal Church and worked for Tennessee Valley Authority, Alabama Feed Products and Sokol's Furniture Store. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Andrews Ward of Colony; a daughter, Sharon (Samuel) Boynton of Montgomery; four sons, Charles (Tanya) Darby of Tuscaloosa, Leroy (Stacy) Mace of Germantown, Md., Edward Webb of Hanceville and Reginald (Deloris) Webb of Birmingham; a brother, Elvin (Shirley) Ward of Colony; a sister-in-law, Mattie (Albert) Rogers of Birmingham; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and dear friends, Mark and Cynthia Whitten.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Emma Stella Graham Weeks

Funeral services for Emma Stella Graham Weeks, 93, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, Dr. Edwin Hayes officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Weeks died Wednesday, Jan. 7. She was born in Logan on May 9, 1910. She was a member of First Baptist Church and served as an elementary school teacher, Sunday School teacher, farmer and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Auburn C. Weeks.

Survivors include a son, Norman Curtis Weeks Sr. of Columbus, Ga.; a daughter, Janice Rebecca Weeks Bishop of Birmingham; three grandchildren, David Timothy Bishop and Shane Mitchell Weeks, both of Birmingham, and Norman Curtis Weeks Jr. of Tuscaloosa; a sister, Mary Ruth Graham of Tuscaloosa; and a brother, Norman Graham of Cullman.

Visitation will be at noon on Friday at the funeral home.

Lillian Beatrice Murphy

Funeral services for Lillian Beatrice Murphy, 84, of Falkville will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Howard Wolf and Brian Murphy officiating, with Burial in Bethsadia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Murphy died Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born Dec. 13, 1919 in Morgan County to Walter and Daisy Thomas Powell. She was a lunchroom cook at Vinemont School.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thad Murphy; a daughter, Myra Alma Murphy; and two sons, Odean Murphy and Huey Murphy.

Survivors include two sons, Oneal (Margaret) Murphy of Falkville and Earl (Connie) Murphy of Hartselle; two daughters, Thelma (Gerald) Harris and Kay (George) Blevins, both of Cullman; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, David Powell of Decatur and John Powell of Cullman; four sisters, Gracie Etheridge of Bremen and Jewell Ball, Martha Cobb and Dortha Shaddix, all of Cullman; a sister-in-law, Glenda Shea of Cullman; and special caregiver, Eulean Burks.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Janet Denise Parrish

Funeral services for Janet Denise Parrish, 37, of Blountsville will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Blountsville Funeral Chapel, with Burial in Roswell Creek Cemetery in Blountsville.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Parrish died Tuesday, Jan. 6 in Bessemer. She was born in Blount County to James Redford and Shirley Sisk Parrish. She was a retail manager for Rich's/Macy's in Birmingham. She graduated in 1984 from J.B. Pennington High School and the University of Alabama with a B.S. degree.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Survivors include her father; and two sisters, Annette Parrish of Blountsville and Julie (Jonathan) Harwell of Pelham.

Pallbearers will be Tim Osborne, Ken Thrasher, Russell Smith, DeWayne Alldredge and O.C. Townsend.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Wallace Alexander

Funeral services for Mary Wallace Alexander, 71, of Vinemont will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, James C. Mays officiating, with Burial in Bethlehem Cemetery.

Mrs. Alexander died Thursday, Jan. 8. She was born Feb. 20,1932, in Cullman County to Willey and Viola Moon McGraw. She was a seamstress for Oneita Industries.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin Jackson Alexander; a grandson, Chad Jackson Alexander; three brothers, James Edward McGraw, Gerald Ray McGraw and Gertis McGraw; and two sisters, Bernice Thompson and Willie Tucker.

Survivors include two sons, Jackson Ray (Connie) Alexander and Michael Jimmy Alexander, both of Cullman; three daughters, Freda Sherline (Ronnie) Stover of Warrior and Wanda Gay (James) Mays and Lisa Alexander Dahlke, both of Cullman; four brothers, Hobson McGraw, Buck McGraw, Donald McGraw and Roland McGraw; two sisters, Gwendola Allred and Leola Guthery; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Raymond Lee Laney

Funeral services for Raymond Lee Laney, 81, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Hunky Blackwood officiating, with Burial in Central Cemetery.

Mr. Laney died Wednesday, Jan. 7, at his residence. He was born July 29, 1922, in Cullman County to Jim and Alma Roberts Laney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Myrl Rodgers Laney; one son, Jimmy Laney; a stepmother, Mae Laney; two brothers, Orvil and Burnon Laney; and one sister, Nora Laney.

Survivors include a son, Ricky (Pat) Laney of Cullman; three brothers, Thurman (Grace) Laney of Decatur and Tommy (Sherry) Laney and Dwight (Sandra) Laney, both of Cullman; five sisters, Mervel Smith and Carolyn Alvis, both of Cullman, Flora Basenburgh of Hanceville, Faye (Jimmy) Dillon of Ohio and Grace (Larry) Jonsie of Jefferson County; five grandchildren, Matt Laney, Gayla Smith, Wesley Laney, Lesley Hembree and Cresley Laney; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Walter Leon McCutcheon

Funeral services for Walter Leon McCutcheon, 86, of Vinemont are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the funeral home.
