Lou Emma Quick

Funeral services for Lou Emma Quick, 87, of Hanceville will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Wayne Elliott and Victor Quick officiating, with Burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Quick died Sunday, Feb. 1, in Hanceville. She was born in Carbon Hill on June 4, 1916 to Samuel S. and Leu Wilhite Wilcutt.

Survivors include her son, John Wayne Quick of Cullman; two daughters, Nelda L. Elliott of Hanceville, Linda Foster Bell of Wilsonville; one brother, Joel Amose Wilcut of Hanceville; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Imojean Callie Sloan

Funeral services for Imojean Callie Sloan, 78, of Hanceville, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Bethlehem East Baptist Church, the Rev. Lawrence Normand and Frank Billingham officiating, with Burial in Bethlehem East Cemetery in Hanceville. The body will lie in state for an hour prior to the service.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sloan died Saturday, Jan. 31, in Russellville. She was born Nov. 5, 1925, in Cullman County to James Vanburen and Bessie Roberts Williams.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Frank) Billingham of Russellville and Deborah (Jerry) Wallace of Hendersonville, N.C.; two sisters, Ivo Reynolds and Mary Lee Williams; one brother, Marvin (Rosa) Williams; nine grandchildren, Anna Billingham, Deborah Billingham, Martha Billingham, Mary Billingham, Rachael Billingham, Samuel Billingham, Sarah Billingham, Amanda (Steve) Freeman and Tim Wallace; and two great-grandchildren, Bethany Wallace and Drew Wallace.

Visitation was Monday.

Jack Action Kohl

Funeral services for Jack Action Kohl, 83, of Cullman will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Abbot Cleatus Meagher and Father Kevin McGrath officiating, with Burial in Catholic Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kohl died Saturday, Jan. 31, at Baptist Medical Center-Princeton in Birmingham. He was born Oct. 16, 1920, to Arthur and Elvina Peters Kohl. He was a transport commander in World War II and spent two summers in Thule, Greenland, during the Korean War. After 20 years with the St. Regis Paper Company in Pensacola, Fla., he went to work for Col. Harland Sanders, where he helped new franchisees open 26 restaurants in three years. He then moved to Cullman and became a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee for 36 years until his death.

During his KFC career, he served on the national board of directors of KFC. He also served as director of the Cullman Chamber of Commerce and president of the Cullman Rotary Club. He was a lifelong member of the Elks Club and an active member at both Larkwood Club and Terri Pines. He sponsored numerous youth sports teams and donated to local churches, schools and civic organizations. He was a longtime Auburn contributor and Tiger fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Blanch Larue Kohl; one son, M. Larue (Jane) Kohl of Guntersville; two daughters, Susan Kohl (Jim) Drake of Tuscaloosa and Mimi Kohl (Kent) Weir of Cullman; and six grandchildren, Kris Kohl, Melissa (Mark) Blackburn, Lea Kohl, Kohl Weir, Allie Weir and Shelby Weir.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Adopt-A-Child at Sacred Heart School or to the Sacred Heart Family Life Center.

Pallbearers will be Jim Drake, Kent Weir, Mark Blackburn, Kris Kohl, Paul Ross and Gene Goebel. Honorary pallbearers will be the Rotarians.

Visitation and rosary were Monday.

Penny Ann Pitts-Flippo

Penny Ann Pitts-Flippo, 33, of Hanceville, formerly of Tampa, Fla., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 in Cullman.

Moss Service is in charge of local arrangements. Final arrangements will be made at Garden of Memories Cemetery and Funeral Home by Tampa, Fla.

Mrs. Pitts-Flippo graduated from Leto High School in Tampa and later became a dental technician. She was employed at Cracker Barrel in Cullman. She was of the Pentacostal faith and attended church in Hanceville.

Survivors include her son, Brent Flippo; daughter, Abigail Flippo; ex-husband, Frank Flippo; mother, Patricia Strauss; father, Frank Pitts; brother, Anthony Pitts; step-brother, David Dorland Jr.; sister, Dawn Santiago; grandfather, Oscar Torrens; step-mother, Sharon Pitts; step-father, David Dorland Sr., six nieces and six nephews.

Visitation was Monday.

Donald Duane Giles

Funeral services for Donald Duane Giles, 59, of Vinemont will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Larry Duke officiating, with Burial in Ebenezer Cemetery in West Point.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Giles died Saturday, Jan. 31, at his residence. He was born Oct. 24, 1944, in Michigan to George Alvin and Mina Louise Purvis Giles. He owned D & R Grading Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Giles of Vinemont; two sons, Mark (Marilyn) Giles of Holly Pond and Randy (Teri) Giles of Pontiac, Mich.; one daughter, Lara (Brian) Thompson of Vinemont; three brothers, Robert (Joyce) Giles of White Pigeon, Mich.; Maynard (Joyce) Giles of Saginaw, Mich., and Larry Giles of Seattle, Wash; three sisters, Arlene (Al) Schultz of Bethany, Okla.; Marilee Seeley of Tuttle, Okla., and Sharon (Gus) Eldridge of Wheeler, Mich.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was Monday.

Beverly Ann Childers

A memorial service for Beverly Ann Childers, 52, of Eva, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at Unity Baptist Church in Cullman, the Rev. Enoch Graves officiating.

Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Childers died Friday, Jan. 30. She was born in Michigan on May 5, 1951.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Warren Green.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Childers; son, Joshua Childers; mother, Anna Haechen; and two brothers, Warren Kwartermauch and James Haechen.

Rickey James Knighten

A memorial service for Rickey James Knighten, 50, of Vinemont will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. Bill Partridge officiating. Burial was at Hamby's Chapel Cemetery in Eva. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church.

Shelton Funeral Home in Decatur is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Knighten died Friday, Jan. 23, at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. He was born March 30, 1953, in Cullman to Ernest James and Ruby Faye Anderson Knighten. He was a member of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents and a cousin, Linda Knighten Moore.

Survivors include his wife, Jamie Tilley Knighten; one son, Rickey James Knighten Jr. of Vinemont; one daughter, Amy Knighten of Vinemont; two sisters, Wanda Knighten Gambrell Latham and Kathy Sue Knighten Gray Pyron, both of Decatur; four cousins, Gregory Knighten of El Paso, Texas, Charlotte Ecklund of Madison and Sharon Painter and Dana Knighten, both of Cullman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes. Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Kidney Foundation.

Birchie Lee Reed

Funeral services for Birchie Lee Reed, 78, of Addison will be at noon, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, Nichols Funeral Home with Burial in Friendship Cemetery in Brooksville.

Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Reed died Saturday, Jan. 31 in Haleyville.

Survivors include four sons, Jimmy Leon Suggs, Felton Ray Suggs, Edward Suggs, all of Cullman, and Jerry Suggs of Somerville; two daughters, Judy Ashley of Cullman, Brenda Champion of Falkville; three brothers, Felton Bell of Hartselle, Williard Bell of Addison, J.W. Bell of Decatur; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was Monday.

Jackie Ray McAnelly

Funeral services for Jackie Ray McAnelly, 62, of Eva will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Daniels Chapel Baptist Church, Dean Estes officiating, with Burial in Etha Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McAnelly died Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Aug. 18, 1941, in Morgan County. He was a truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Eddie McAnelly.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Green McAnelly; his mother, Audrey McAnelly; a son, Dustin Ray McAnelly; two brothers, Eddie (Tammy) McAnelly of Cullman and Willie Joe (Peggy) McAnelly of Florida; and a sister, Joan (Earl) Cook of Pensacola, Fla.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Orvel McSwain

Funeral services for Orvel McSwain, 82, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, the Revs. G.R. Bridgmon and Dillon Calvert officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McSwain died Wednesday, Feb. 4 at his residence. He was born March 28, 1921 to A.T. and Pearlie Freeman McSwain. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He spent two years in Europe during the height of the war. He retired from Brice Building Company of Birmingham as a construction superintendent. He was a cattle farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Odis McSwain and Void McSwain; a grandson, Jimmy Allen; and a great-grandson, Kyler Allen.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Christie Hancock McSwain; two sons, Lawrence (Luenett) McSwain of Social Circle, Ga. and Bobby (Cindy) McSwain of Cullman; two daughters, Linda Williams of Gardendale and Connie Allen of Cullman; a brother, Theron McSwain of Bremen; three sisters, Lora Williams, Lillie Calvert and Velma Harbison; seven grandchildren, Jason (Karen) Williams, Keith Williams, Jennifer (Eric McIntosh) Allen, Brooke (Duston) Neighbors, Brittany McSwain, Sean McSwain and Lisa McSwain; and four great-grandchildren, Lindsey Williams, Jonathan Williams, Breanna Allen and Kayla Allen.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Norma Marie Setlock Lindley

Graveside services for Norma Marie Setlock Lindley, 76, of Vinemont will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Red Bay City Cemetery, the Rev. V. Leslie McAbee officiating.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lindley died Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 30, 1927 in Buffalo, N.Y. to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Setlock. She was a retired bookkeeper for K-Mart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Norris B. Lindley.

Survivors include a son, Norris B. (Ivy) Lindley Jr. of Tennessee; a daughter, Deborah Lindley of Vinemont; and two grandchildren, Paige and April Lindley.

Vaudie Vest

Funeral arrangements for Vaudie Vest, 77, of Cullman, who died Feb. 4, 2004, at Cullman Regional Medical Center, will be announced by Cullman Heritage Funeral Home.

Kathy Campbell Smith

Services for Kathy Campbell Smith, 46, of Cullman will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at White Oak Baptist Church, Dillon Calvert, Junior Garmon and Randall Edmondson officiating, with Burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She died Feb. 4 at her home. She was born Nov. 5, 1957, in Cullman County. She was a former waitress at Jack's Truck Stop and a member of the National Guard.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Millner Campbell, George Amos Garmon and Verla Garmon.

She is survived by her parents, George Ellis Campbell and George Ellen Garmon Campbell; two sons, Jason DeWayne (Dana) Young and Jeremy Scott Young; a daughter, Jessica Dawn (Robbie) Ritchie; a brother, James Campbell; three sisters, Karen Campbell, Connie (Richard) Curvin and Mary (Kalen) Tilley; two grandchildren, Jasmine Ritchie and Kylie Ritchie; and a grandmother, Belle Howlette.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

SFC James T. Hoffman

Funeral services for SFC James T. Hoffman, 41, of Wakefield, Kan., will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at the Main Post Chapel, Chaplains Willoughby and Fukes officiating, with Burial in Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors.

Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel of Junction City, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

SFC Hoffman died Tuesday, Jan. 27 in Khalidiyah, Iraq. He was born Aug. 16, 1962 in Chicago. He graduated from Palatine High School in Chicago. He married Vickie Pierce on June 21, 1989 in Clarksville, Tenn. He and his family resided in Wakefield, Kan., previously residing in Fort Riley, Kan. and Manhattan, Kan.

Survivors include his mother, Patricia Muldoon Hoffman of Palatine, Ill.; his father, Fred Hoffman of Cary, Ill.; his wife, Vickie Hoffman of Wakefield, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Regina Macon of Alabama and Angela Macon of Arizona; four brothers, Fred Hoffman of New Jersey, Dan Hoffman of Atlanta, Tommy Hoffman of Orlando, Fla. and Eric Hoffman of Chicago; a sister, Barbara Lemke of Chicago; and three grandchildren, Chelsea Macon of Wakefield, Ill., Brando Reese of Alabama and Tyler Macon of Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the James T. Hoffman Memorial Fund, c/o Fort Riley National Bank.

Pallbearers will be the 234th Armor Battalion.
