Thelma L. Fortner

Funeral services for Thelma L. Fortner, 83, of Hayden will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Lemley Chapel in Oneonta, Joe Cook and Theron Robertson officiating, with Burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Straight Mountain.

Lemley Chapel in Oneonta is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fortner died Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Woodland Hospital. She was born in Alabama to Jesse and Myrtle Head Hammock. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Covenant Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cargus W. Fortner; her parents; a brother, Chester; a granddaughter, Janice Hestla; and a great-grandson, Buddy Warley.

Survivors include three sons, Roy Fortner of Cullman County, William (Jeanette) Fortner of Hayden and Alvin (Geraldine) Fortner of Hanceville; a daughter, Shirley (Cecil) Warley of Blountville, Tenn.; two sisters, Louis Green of Hayden and Katherine Bentley of Michigan; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Fortner's family members.

Donald Columbus Bryan

Funeral services for Donald Columbus Bryan, 73, of Baileyton will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Eidsons Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Andrew Chambers and Floyd Bradford officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bryan died Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born July 15, 1930, in Cullman County to Tollie Columbus and Evia Pitts Bryan. He was a poultry farmer and an elder at Eidsons Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 22 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Evelyn Kay McCubbins; a granddaughter, Amanda Butler; a brother, James Bryan; and two infant brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Liddie Miller Bryan of Baileyton; five daughters, Donna Fay (Bobby) Cryer and Cindy (Shannon) Kenney, both of Cullman, Linda (Charles) Hyde and Debbie (Adam) Harris, both of Baileyton, and Mary (David) Johnson of Hanceville; a brother, Willard Bryan of Baileyton; three sisters, Ruby Turner and Nellie Berry, both of Cullman, and Buna Benefield of Arab; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Vaudie Christine Vest

Funeral services for Vaudie Christine Vest, 77, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Vernon Willis and James Blackwood officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Vest died Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born July 25, 1926, in Cullman County.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin Luther and Ruth Mae Umphrey Vest; a brother, Bresee Harold Vest; an infant brother; and an infant sister.

Survivors include several cousins.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

William Henry 'Bill' Holley

Funeral services for William Henry "Bill" Holley, 68, of Hayden will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, the Revs. Joe Cook and Vernon Alvis officiating, with Burial in Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Trussville.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Holley died Tuesday, Feb. 3, at his residence. He was born in Birmingham on Feb. 26, 1935, to Lewis and Margaret Forbos Holley. He was a mechanic with Birmingham Transit Authority.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Gaila Holley of Hayden; four sons, Bryan Holley of Crossville; Karl (Regina) Holley of Ammsville, Ore.; Keith (Cinthia) Holley of Tallahassee, Fla.; and Patrick (Kellie) Holley of Hayden; three sisters, Hazel Kyzer and Ruth McCombs, both of Birmingham, and Elizabeth (Ed) Morgan of Montgomery; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margaret Pirkle Sandlin

Funeral services for Margaret Pirkle Sandlin, 73, of Vinemont will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Faith Baptist Church, Randy Makemson officiating, with Burial in Round Top Cemetery in Morgan County.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sandlin died Thursday, Feb. 5, at Brookwood Medical Center. She was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Tennessee to Isaiah and Mary Burdett Pirkle. She was a retired school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Erbie Earl Sandlin Jr.; and a son, Jackie Sandlin.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Sandlin and Darlene Leonard; a son, Stanley Sandlin; two sisters, Emily Farr and Carolyn Rusk; a brother, Kenneth Pirkle; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today at the church.

Dessie Mae Collins

Funeral services for Dessie Mae Collins, 85, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, Tommy Graves officiating, with Burial in Good Hope Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Collins died Thursday, Feb. 5, at Woodland Village Nursing Home. She was born in Georgia n May 4, 1918, to Jarvis J. and Savannah Ballew Leonard. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include 13 nieces; 15 nephews; 51 great-nephews; and 42 great-nieces.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

James F. Burns

Funeral services for James F. Burns, 83, of Birmingham will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Ridout's Trussville Chapel with Burial in Trussville City Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fair Haven Retirement Home.

Ridout's Trussville Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burns died Wednesday, Feb. 4. He was born March 22, 1920, in East Lake to Charlie and Lillie Celeste Brooks Burns. He was a 1939 graduate of Marbery High School, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and served in the Army Air Corps. He made the official photograph of the first plane to land at the South Pole. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1967, then owned real estate businesses in Center Point, Clay and Cullman. He was active in the Clay Missionary Alliance Church, First Methodist of Cullman and East Lake Methodist.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Frances Bird Burns.

Survivors include his wife, Bettina Pearson Higdon Burns; one daughter, Jean Burns Casto of Cullman; one son, James (Gale) Douglas of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four sisters, Oleta Burns (James) Buckner of Riverside, Olna Burns (Earl) Allcorn of Oneonta, Lois Burns (John) Smith and Kay Burns (Richard) Turner of Clay; one brother, Wayne Burns (Nita) Clay; four grandchildren, Terri Engelmann (Paul) LaPoint of Hanceville; Charles Edward Engelmann of St. Petersburg, Fla; Timothy John Engelmann of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Stephen Reilly Engelmann of Springville; and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Fountain of Love at Fair Haven, 1424 Montclair Road, Birmingham, or a favorite charity.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Sylvia Copeland

Funeral services for Sylvia Copeland, 83, of Blountsville will be at Blountsville United Methodist Church, Elton Lowery and Mike Carver officiating, with Burial in Blountsville Cemetery. Eastern Star Rites will be held at the cemetery.

Blountsville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Copeland died Wednesday, Feb. 4, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham. She was born in Gadsden to Thomas and Mae Copeland Bradberry. She was the retired owner and operator of Sylvia's Dress Shop in Blountsville. She was a member of Blountsville United Methodist Church and the Blountsville Eastern Star for over 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Kenneth Copeland.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynette Glatzer of Blountsville; two grandchildren, Jerry Lynn Jones of Cleveland and Michelle Humphrey of Oneonta; six great-grandchildren, Chris Jones, Tony Jones, Jennifer Jones, Nicholas Humphrey, Alex Humphrey and DeLaney Humphrey; and a great-grandchild, Logan Jones.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Abercrombie, Lynn Alldredge, Marvin McGee, Bob Hewitt, Charlie Deerman and Wayne Sikes.

Honorary pallbearers will be Arlin Neal and Earl McAlpine.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Saturday, both at the funeral home.

Vernie Hallmark

Funeral services for Vernie Hallmark, 88, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Arab, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Gober Funeral Chapel, Sean Easterwood officiating, with Burial in New Harmony Cemetery.

Gober Funeral Chapel of Arab is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hallmark died Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Orlando, Fla. She was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Blount County to James Luther and Amanda Dean Powell. She was a homemaker and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church for many years. She joined Conway First Baptist Church in Orlando when she moved there.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frances S. Hallmark; two brothers, Calvin and Tolbert Powell; and two sisters, Lora and Gertrude.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Webb of Orlando, Fla.; Vivian Thomas of Oviedo, Fla.; and Madell Rabb of Cocoa, Fla.; a son, Ken Simpson of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Dolsie Cloud of Lineville; two brothers, Ralph Powell of Cullman and Radford Powell of Birmingham; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Annis Ryan Leonard Morris

Funeral services for Annis Ryan Leonard Morris, 92, of Jasper will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home, the Rev. Charlie powell officiating, with Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. The body will lie in state for an hour prior to the service.

Kilgore-Green Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morris died Thursday, Feb. 5, at Baptist Medical Center-Walker.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Louis Leonard and Luther Morris; her parents, James Thomas and Candace Rebecca Best Ryan; one daughter, Mary Sue Leonard; three brothers, Forest Ryan, Robin Ryan and Houston Ryan; and four sisters, Bessie Panter, Thursey Hicks, Berty Robbins and Opal Baird.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Jerry Dale Hancock

Funeral services for Jerry Dale Hancock, 55, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, the Revs. Bob Kurtz and G.R. Bridgmon officiating, with Burial in Sardis Cemetery at Trimble.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hancock died Thursday, Feb. 5, at his residence. He was a mobile home salesman and most recently affiliated with Jack's Truck Stop.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lovett Curtis and Bessie Bradford Hancock; and a brother, James Elwin Hancock.

Survivors include a son, Bryan (Denise) Hancock; a brother, Curtis Earl Hancock; three sisters, Melva McAfee, Dorothy Hightower and Carolyn Gurganious; two grandchildren, Ben Hancock and Emma Kate Hancock; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Dennis Wade Huffstutler Sr.

Funeral services for Dennis Wade Huffstutler Sr., 57, of Cullman will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, the Rev. Larry Duke officiating, with Burial in Cross Roads Baptist Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Huffstutler died Thursday, Feb. 5, at his residence. He was born Sept. 2, 1946. He was a maintenance supervisor with Woodland Village Health Care Center. He was a lifelong resident of Cullman. He had worked at Bunge North America for 28 years, then went to work for Woodland Village Health Care for the last three years. He was of the Southern Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Lee Bates Huffstutler.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Floyd Huffstutler; two sons, Dennis Wade (Lisa) Huffstutler of Fairview and Perry Keith (Kristi) Huffstutler of Vinemont; a daughter, Sabrina Darlene (David) Butler of Cullman; his father, Elmos Louis Huffstutler of Cullman; seven grandchildren, Gabrielle Huffstutler, Abrianna Huffstutler, Justin Huffstutler, Jake Butler, Coty Butler, Alexis Butler and Gage Butler; his mother-in-law, Naomi Floyd; an aunt, Thelma Brown; and an uncle, Bobby Huffstutler.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Jeffrey Scott Garrison

Funeral services for Jeffrey Scott Garrison, 17, of Falkville will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Peck Funeral Chapel, with Burial in Corinth Cemetery in Cullman County.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Garrison died Thursday, Feb. 5, at Hartselle Medical Center. He was an honor roll student at Falkville High School and was employed at McDonald's in Hartselle.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joey Garrison; and a grandmother, Ruthie Way.

Survivors include his parents, Billy and Veronica Garrison; three brothers, Wendell Westmoreland of Addison, B.J. Garrison and Justin Garrison, both of Falkville; and his grandparents, Wallace Styles Jr. of Wisconsin, Carolyn Style of Wisconsin, Willodean Mardis of East Lawrence, Roland Mardis, Grady Garrison of Speake and Arthur Watkins of Valhermoso Springs.
