Marie Hughes

Funeral services for Marie Hughes, 81, of Falkville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Peck Funeral Chapel, the Revs. Floyd L. Bradford and James Hopkins officiating, with Burial in Herring Cemetery in Hartselle.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hughes died Monday, Feb. 23, at her residence. She was born Dec. 18, 1922, in Blount County to Egbert and Leons Sims Stancil. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church at Falkville. She spent 62 years of marriage to her husband, James Hughes, working with him in farming and vegetable gardening. Her hobbies included fish, sewing, flower gardening, cooking and baking. She worked as a clerk at Summerford Grocery Store in Falkville and was on the dietary staff at Summerford Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her son, James H. "Chip" Hughes Jr..

Survivors include her husband, James Henry Hughes of Falkville; a daughter, Jacquelyn Hughes Gandy of Guntersville; a brother, Ervil Stancil; a sister, Floris McClendon of Cold Springs; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Butch Bradford, David Bradford, Jordan Gandy, Mitchell Hughes, Mal Petterson and Galin McClendon.

Visitation was Tuesday.

Chad Adam Prestridge

Memorial services for Chad Adam Prestridge, 33, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, Billy Coleman officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Prestridge died Wednesday, Feb. 25. He was born April 8, 1970 in Alabama. He was the son of Coach Bill Prestridge of Camden, Tenn., who coached at Cullman High School and Hanceville High School in the early 1960s, and Diane Nelson Brown of Cullman. He attended high school in Holtville (Slapout), where he played varsity football, before becoming a quadraplegic as a result of a diving accident. He later went on to attend the University of Memphis, where he earned a degree in accounting. After graduation, he worked in the IT Department of Danka Corporation in Tampa, Fla. before moving to Cullman three years ago. He was employed as a case officer for the Social Security Administration in Birmingham. He was an avid sports fan and attended movies frequently and loved music of all kinds. He attended St. Andrew's United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his mother; his father; his stepmother, Gina Prestridge of Camden, Tenn.; his stepfather, Ken Brown of Cullman; four sisters, Beth Dover of Hollywood, Calif., Caroline Rouhan of Tampa, Fla., Rachel Prestridge of Knoxville, Tenn. and Jenny Brown of Sacramento, Calif.; three brothers, Billy Prestridge of Macon, Ga., Read and Todd Brown of Sacramento, Calif.; his grandmother, Doris Nelson of Cullman; stepgrandfather, Ken Brown Sr. of Cullman; and five nieces, Jessika, Samantha, Kaitlyn, Brittany and Shelly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Good Samaritan Clinic at 401 Arnold St. N.E., Suite A, Cullman, Ala. 35055.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Kenneth Ray Bates

Funeral services for Kenneth Ray Bates, 61, of Cullman were Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Jerry Lawson officiating, with Burial in Rock Springs Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bates died Monday, Feb. 23 at Baptist Medical Center-Princeton. She was born Oct. 2, 1942, in Cooter, Mo. to Curtis C. and Flossie Hale Bates. He was an auto mechanic with Chandler Equipment.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, J.C., Wesley, Frank and Bobby Bates; and three sisters, Carrie Hudson Smith, Lucille Smith and Mildred Wooten.

Survivors include a son, Terry Bates of Cullman; a daughter, Sherri (Bill) Lindley of Falkville; a brother, William Bates of Cullman; a sister, Wadean Pirie of Orlando, Fla.; a half-sister, Betty Robinson of Addison; special friend, Lucille Justice of Cullman; and a granddaughter, Paige Lindley.

Martin Dale Shoemaker

Graveside services for Martin Dale Shoemaker, 39, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Blair Methodist Cemetery, Mark Posey officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shoemaker died Tuesday, Feb. 24 at his residence. He was born Oct. 25, 1964 in Cullman. He was a carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Wynn Shoemaker.

Survivors include his father, Gilbert Shoemaker of Hartselle; his stepmother, Jo Ann Shoemaker of Hartselle; a brother, Michael Shoemaker of Cullman; two sisters, Kay (Jeff) Laney of Cullman and Angela (Wesley) Hale of Hattiesburg, Miss.; his grandparents, Dallas and Joyce Wynn of Blair; a stepbrother, Tim (Judy) Moody of Hartselle; and a stepsister, Darlene Jewellson of Somerville.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

Joe Orvel Ray

Funeral services for Joe Orvel Ray, 77, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Seventh St. Baptist Church Preservation Committee, Millard Mann officiating, with Burial in Hopewell Cemetery and Masonic rites at graveside. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ray died Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born June 1, 1926, in Wynnewood, Okla. to George Washington and Laura Sanders Ray. He was a poultry grower and field man and salesman with Marshall Durbin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a longtime member of Seventh Street Baptist Preservation Committee, a deacon, a member of Simcoe Masonic Lodge No. 854 for 46 years. He served as past master and served as secretary for eight years. He served on the Board of Directors of Farmer Co-Op.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Curtis Ray, Fornice Ray, Leland Ray and Jimmy Ray; and two sisters, Leasle Morgan and Arlene Porter.

Survivors include his wife, Jewell Williams Ray of Cullman; a daughter, Sandra Spann of Greer, S.C.; two grandchildren, Scott (Heather) Pawleys Island, S.C. and Holly Spann of Greer, S.C.; a son-in-law, Frank Spann of South Carolina; a brother, Roy (Dorothy) Ray of Gardendale; and 29 nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be members of Simcoe Masonic Lodge.

Honorary pallbearer will be Mark Poole, member of Northern Lodge No. 278 of New Hope.

Visitation was Wednesday.

Mildred Victoria Hutchens

Funeral services for Mildred Victoria Hutchens, 82, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, the Revs. Eugene Hutchens and Sam Hollis officiating.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hutchens died Thursday, Feb. 26, at her residence. She was born in Cullman on Oct. 16, 1921, to Randolphus and Parlee Goodwin Aycock. She was a homemaker, a longtime member of East Side Baptist Church and a current member of Seventh Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Elbert and George Aycock.

Survivors include her husband, James Byron Hutchens of Cullman; three sons, Jimmy (Donna) Hutchens and Phil (Patty) Hutchens, both of Cullman, and Joe (Sherry) Hutchens of Hanceville; a daughter, Carol (Lee) Wilhite of Cullman; 10 grandchildren, Jimmy Wilhite, Ricky Wilhite, Steven Wilhite, David Hutchens, Michael Hutchens and Chris Hutchens, Nancy Bonds, Shelia Munger, Beth Gonzales and Ashlee Hutchens; two stepgrandchildren, Stephanie Taylor and Jeremy Hopper; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bessie I. Fowler

Funeral services for Bessie I. Fowler, 92, of Hanceville will be at noon Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Home, with Fairview West Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fowler died Thursday, Feb. 26, in Cullman. She was born in Georgia on June 6, 1911.

Survivors include three sons, Daniel Fowler and Jerry Fowler, both of Hanceville, and Donald Fowler of Geraldine; a daughter, Ellen McDonald of Dodge City; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jeanne Marie Schumann

Memorial services for Jeanne Marie Schumann, 57, of Hanceville will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Father Kevin McGrath officiating.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schumann died Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Cullman. She was born in West Brook, Minn. on Nov. 4, 1946, to Henry and Rosemarie Ripschlager Michelau.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Rodney Schumann of Hanceville; two daughters, Angie Rekieta of McKinney, Texas, and Kristen Schumann of Seattle, Wash.; a son, Ryan Schumann of Seattle, Wash.; four sisters, Debra Belcher of Brainard, Minn.; Lori Bruce of St. Louis, Mo.; Patty Reymund of Sanborn, Minn., and Diane Schmitt of Windham, Minn.; three brothers, Donald Michelau of Grand Prairie, Texas; Larry Michelau of Dayton, Fla.; and Michael Michelau of Fulda, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Kaylee Rekieta and Timothy Rekieta, both of McKinney, Texas.

Russell West Arnold

Funeral services for Russell West Arnold, 67, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at First United Methodist Church, Bob Murray and Bob Alford officiating, with Burial in Cullman City Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arnold died Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair. He was born July 28, 1936, in Cullman to E.R. and Ruth West Arnold. He as a manager at K-Mart. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the New Dimensions Sunday School Class, American Business Club and was a bus driver for "Young at Heart."

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen Bradford Arnold of Cullman; two sons, Herbert (Kim) Arnold and James Arnold (Melissa) Arnold, both of Cullman; four grandchildren, Russ Arnold, Brad Arnold, Michael Arnold and Caroline Arnold, all of Cullman; and two sisters, A.B. Quick of Lafayette, Ind. and Mary Evelyn Holloway of Birmingham.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church building fund.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Cathlene Banks Hinkle

Funeral services for Cathlene Banks Hinkle, 71, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Friendship Baptist Church, Gary Waddell officiating, with Burial in Etha Baptist Church. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Hinkle died Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Baptist Medical Center-Princeton. She was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Cullman County to Lawrence and Georgia Hill Banks. She was a licensed practical nurse at Woodland Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn "Jackie" (George) Holmes of Eva; two stepsons, Jerald (Patsy) Hinkle of Jones Chapel and Larry Hinkle of Dodge City; a brother, Thurman Banks of Eva; two sisters, Wilodene Brock and Peggy Boliski, both of Vinemont; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

David H. Jennings

Funeral services for David H. Jennings, 45, of Warrior will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Bell Sumiton Chapel, Dr. Rudy Guess officiating, with Burial in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bell Funeral Home-Sumiton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jennings died Wednesday, Feb. 25, in an automobile accident. He was born in Cleveland, Miss., the middle child of three brothers. He was a graduate of Cullman High School. His hobbies included fishing, R.C. racing and target shooting. He was employed with Alabama State LP Gas Board.

Survivors include his wife, Trish Jennings of Warrior; a son, Josh (Crystal) Jennings of Piedmont; his parents, Kenneth Rozine and Doris Jennings of Dora; two brothers, Kenneth R. Jennings Jr. of Dora and Keith (Joanna) Jennings of Birmingham; his grandmother, Onie Sheperd Jennings of Cleveland, Miss.; two grandchildren, Ethan and Cameron Jennings, both of Piedmont; and his father- and mother-in-law, Charles and Olive Winters of Warrior.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bertha M. Baumgardner

Funeral services for Bertha M. Baumgardner, 81, of Vinemont will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Jerry Lake and Tim Aris officiating, with Burial in Crossroads Cemetery.

Mrs. Baumgardner died Thursday, Feb. 26, at Woodland Medical Center. She was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Marshall County to Homer and Eva Anderson Clay. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, John Clay.

Survivors include her husband, Colonel Budd E. Baumgardner of Vinemont; two sons, Budd E. Jr. (Sonja) Baumgardner of Houston, Texas, and Jeffery (Karen) Baumgardner of Vinemont; a daughter, Kathleen (Vincent) Campanella of Sykesville, Md.; two brothers, Rudolph Clay of Eva and David Clay of Vinemont; three sisters, Thelma Pence of Leveland, Texas; Ruth Shadell of Mayflower, Ariz.; and Ruby Clay of Good Hope; and three grandchildren, David Baumgardner of Bryant, Texas; Frank Campanella of Baltimore, Md.; and Nick Campanella of Sykesville, Md.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside services for Lois Elizabeth Carter, 90, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Buffington Cemetery in Castleberry.

Mrs. Carter died Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born March 29, 1913, in Castleberry to Jerry P. and Sallie Bell Johnston Matthews. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a son, Joel Carter of Cullman; Linda Carter Hill of Tuscaloosa; two grandchildren, William Carter (Kristi) Hill of Northport and Jonathan Davis (Sidney) Hill of Naperville, Ill.; and a sister, Virginia Wolff of Evergreen.

Sandy Powell Cappadocia

Funeral arrangements for Sandy Powell Cappadocia, 51, of Guntersville will be announced at a later date by the funeral home.
