Harry James Kilgo

Funeral services for Harry James Kilgo, 55, of Brushy Pond will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Hanceville Chapel, Charles Sinyard and J.C. Graves officiating, with Burial in Persimmon Grove Cemetery in Bremen.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kilgo died Wednesday, Sept. 1, in Cullman. He was born Nov. 20, 1948, in Cullman to Clelie and Virgie Campbell Kilgo. He received two Bronze Stars while serving in Vietnam in the Army.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Phillips Kilgo of Brushy Pond; one son, Shane (Joy) Kilgo of Brushy Pond; one daughter, Brandi (Michael) Lindsey of Crane Hill; one grandchild, Raegan Campbell Lindsey; one brother, Kermit (Martha) Kilgo of Brushy Pond; one sister, Sarah (Jimmy) Basinger of Jacksonville, Fla.; five nieces; two nephews; one great-niece; and two great-nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Paul Robert 'Bob' Hassell

Graveside services for Paul Robert "Bob" Hassell, 61, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Holly Pond Cemetery, the Rev. Lester Veal officiating.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hassell died Wednesday, Sept. 1 at Hanceville Nursing Home. He was born in Blount County on Nov. 7, 1942, to T.C. and Eva Gorham Hassell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Winton, Roy and Harvey Lee Hassell.

Survivors include a sister, Muriel Hassell Helton of Cullman; a sister-in-law, Prue Hassell of Cullman; two nieces, Paulett Helton Sullins of Cullman and Patricia Hassell Lowery of Birmingham; and two nephews, Micheal Hassell of Birmingham and Bruce Helton of Cullman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Holly Pond Cemetery fund.

Visitation was Wednesday.

Mark Allen Knight

Funeral services for Mark Allen Knight, 36, of Los Angeles, Calif., will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Jason Hancock officiating, with Burial in Prospect Church of Christ Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Knight died Wednesday, Aug. 18, in Los Angeles County Hospital. He was born in Cullman County Hospital on July 20, 1968. He was a hospital worker at L.A. General Hospital. He enjoyed such hobbies as fishing, swimming and sports.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ted G.B. Knight.

Survivors include his mother, Norma (Dwight) Bradley of Hanceville; a son, Lucas Allen Knight of Birmingham; his grandmother, Alice Morris of Cullman; three brothers, Ted D. (Theresa) Knight of Lawton, Okla., Keith (Diane) Knight and Kenneth Knight, both of Cullman; three sisters, Lisa Cofer of Anniston, Connie (Carl) Brown-Givens of Cullman and Sandra Goodwin of Birmingham; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Randy Albert Powe

Funeral services for Randy Albert Powe, 51, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Phil Parmer and Chaplains Lt. Col. Coy Hallmark and Jerry Fleming officiating, with Burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery with military honors. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Powe died Tuesday, Aug. 31, at his residence. He was born Aug. 20, 1953, in Cullman to Albert and Eva Moon Powe. He was a sales associate with Wal-Mart and a master sergeant of the 142nd Signal Brigade in Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his mother; his wife, Elaine Breed Powe of Cullman; a son, Travis (Selena) Powe of Jasper; a grandson, Damion Powe of Jasper; a sister, Dena (Richard) Brown of Hayden; a mother-in-law, Faye Breed of Cullman; a sister-in-law, Anne Wilson of Cullman; two brothers-in-law, Bill Wilson and Richard Breed, both of Cullman; three nieces, Jennifer (Tony) Jackson, Karena Weiss and Dana (Brian) Crane, all of Cullman; three great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

Pallbearers will be members of the 142nd Signal Brigade.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Young, Johnny Chesser, Wal-Mart Associates and other guard members.

Visitation was Wednesday.

Gaston Evon Calvert

Funeral services for Gaston Evon Calvert, 81, of Jacksonville, formerly of Cullman, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, The Revs. Jame Robertson and Melisa Saccucci officiating, with graveside services at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 in Cullman City Cemetery.

K.L. Brown Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Calvert died Wednesday, Sept. 1, at his residence. He was a native of Crane Hill, a professor emeritus at Campbell University in North Carolina. He began his 40 years as an educator in Cullman County where he was a teacher, coach and principal in the Dowling and Logan Junior High School. He later was employed by Calhoun County Schools and Jacksonville City Schools before going to Campbell University. Over the years, he served as part-time choir director in Alabama and North Carolina churches. He was a World War II infantry veteran serving in the Pacific Theater as a part of the 41st Division, seeing action in Biak, Leyte Gulf and as a member of the occupation force in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was one of six siblings, all from Calhoun County, who served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. and Carrie Fisher Calvert; and a daughter, Bonnie Claire Calvert.

Survivors include his wife, Kenneith Harbison Calvert of Jacksonville; a daughter, Rebecca Williams of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Opal Tucker and Hazel Guthery, both of Cullman; and two grandchildren, Sarah Williams and Duncan Williams, both of Columbus, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bonnie Claire Calvert Memorial Scholarship Fund, Office of Development, Campbell University, P.O. Box 116, Buies Creek, N.C. 27506.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church in Jacksonville on Friday; and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Moss-Service Funeral Home in Cullman.

Billy Jack Ward

Funeral services for Billy Jack Ward, 72, of Holly Pond will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Howard Wolfe officiating, with Burial in Duck River Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ward died Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born May 4, 1932, in Morgan County to Edward Sr. and Vera Light Ward.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn Horton Ward; and a brother, Calvin Ward.

Survivors include two sons, Rickey (Dean) Ward of Decatur and Tony Ward of Tuscumbia; three daughters, Linda Buckelew and Michelle (Chris) Abbott of Cullman and Tina Daniel of Decatur; two brothers, Manuel G. Ward of Cullman and Edward Ward of Huntsville; a sister, Helen O'Bryant of Huntsville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Major Carl M. Wilhite

Memorial services for Major Carl M. Wilhite, 77, of Sacramento, Calif., will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Anon Baptist Church in Vinemont. Relatives and friends are encouraged to attend the memorial service. Interment with full military honors will be on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Major Wilhite died Monday, July 18, at his residence. He was born April 22, 1927, in Cullman to Carl and Gladys Wilhite. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and many other commendations.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Darrell Wilhite.

Survivors include his wife, Johnnie R. Wilhite; three sons, Carl Wilhite Jr., David Wilhite and Brian Wilhite; a daughter, Grace Marie Frasche; two brothers, Van Wilhite and Lee Wilhite; a sister, Justine Whitley; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jean Eldridge Mims

Funeral services for Jean Eldridge Mims, 78, of Hayden will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, Buddy Jackson and Randall Hodges officiating, with Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Hayden.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mims died Wednesday, Sept. 1, in Hayden.

Doris Marie Moore

Funeral services for Doris Marie Moore, 70, of Cullman will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Moss-Service Chapel, with Burial in Beech Springs Baptist Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Moore died Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 15, 1934, to Curtis and Lela Hopkins Trussell. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Moore; a daughter, Barbara Jones; and a son, J.D. Miller.

Survivors include two sons, James Edward Miller and Henry Dwayne Rothrock; five daughters, Merle Jean James, Patricia Ann Baker, Rose Marie Headly, Joyce Rothrock and Faye Rothrock; five brothers, Willie Trussell, Bobby Lee Trussell, Herbert Trussell, Jerry Trussell and Bud Trussell; three sisters, Katheline Trussell, Jeanette Bryan and Loraine Trussell; 30 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be James Doss, Robert Doss, Joe Doss, Joseph James, Robert James, Junior Trussell and Henry Carnes.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Roy Baxter

Funeral services for Roy Baxter, 68, of Vinemont will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Crosses Chapel Church, Al Dean officiating, with Burial in the chapel cemetery with military honors and Masonic rites. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Baxter died Thursday, Sept. 2, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 13, 1935, in Slocomb to Henry and Iler Stuckey Baxter. He was a retired electrician for the military.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Sanders Baxter of Vinemont; four sons, Michael Baxter, Jamie Dean Thompson and Jerry Shane Thompson, all of West Point, and Monnie Baxter of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Robbie Ann Nichols of Bremen; three brothers, Ray (Leonie) Baxter of Virginia, Billy Joe Baxter and Robert Baxter, both of Bonifay, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was Friday.

Doris J. Parker

Funeral arrangements for Doris J. Parker, 55, of Addison are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the funeral home.

Mrs. Parker died Friday, Sept. 3, at her residence.

Leo Carl Morgan

Funeral services for Leo Carl Morgan, 83, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, David McDonald officiating, with Burial in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Morgan died Wednesday, Sept. 8, at his residence.

David Currington

Funeral services for David Currington, 55, of Hanceville will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Bethlehem Methodist Church, the Rev. David McDonald and Lane Horton officiating, with Burial in Good Hope Cemetery. The body will lie in state two hours prior to services.

Mr. Currington died Monday, Sept. 6, in Hanceville.

Bessie Adams Owens Morgan

Graveside services for Bessie Adams Owens Morgan, 97, of Hanceville will be at noon Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Wesley's Chapel Cemetery in Hillsboro, Tenn., the Rev. Paul Campbell officiating.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morgan died Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Hanceville Nursing Home.

Thurman Laney

Funeral services for Thurman Laney, 80, of Decatur are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by Moss-Service Funeral Home. Mr. Laney died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Decatur General Hospital.

Allen LaDale 'Dale' Pankey

Funeral services for Allen LaDale "Dale" Pankey, 39, of Holly Pond will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Faith Worship Center Church of God in Glencoe, Pastor Mark Gidley, the Rev. Dewayne Harbison and Pastor Scott Stovall officiating, with Burial in Deerman's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services.

Mr. Pankey died Monday, Sept. 6. He was a native and longtime resident of Etowah County having resided in Cullman County since 1997. He worked as director of operations for Sonic Restaurants. He was a member of the Faith Worship Center Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Belinda Pankey; four children, Terrie Elizabeth (Ron) Crumbley, Kaci Snow Pankey, Zacharey Adam Pankey and Victoria Lynn Pankey; his parents, Larry Pankey, Dot and Benny Battles; his grandparents, Annette Pankey and the late Ivan Pankey, Dean "Dee Dee" Bayne, and Joe and Ina Crabtree; two sisters, Kim (Jerry) Mason and Kelly (Scott) Gossett; a brother, David (Suzanne) Pankey; two stepsisters, Sandra Battles and Shelia (Darryl) Smith; special nieces and nephews, Mikey Nelson, Amber Nelson, Leeann Nelson, Rachel and Alyson Smith; and aunts and uncles, Mike and Sandy Nelson, Sue Thompson, Montez Chumley and Helen Cobb.

Pallbearers will be Reggie Baseburg, Kevin Abernathy, Kenny Abernathy, Wayne Pullen, Dwayne Denney, Tim Terry, Andy Parris and Tommy Oslin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mitch Hestla, Rex Gilley, Tony Hardin, Tony Oslin, David Chambers, Mike Perry, Allen Walker, Doug Koestel, Gary Kuhn, Scott Overmiller, Jeff Carper, Bobby Jones and Rick Ganson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
