Tommy Roden

Funeral services for Tommy Roden, 71, of Holly Pond will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Holly Pond First Baptist Church, the Revs. Horace Hall and Paul Tabor officiating, with Burial in Holly Pond Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services.

Holly Pond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roden died Monday, May 23 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. He was born Feb. 10, 1934, in Cullman County. He was a livestock dealer and was a former mayor of Holly Pond. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Holly Pond.

He was preceded in death by his parents, McKinley and Bertie Johnson Roden; a brother, Arlin Roden; and four sisters, Odell Livingston, Beatrice McAnally, Irene Williams and Opal Hodges.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jeanette Roden of Holly Pond; a son, Rusty (Cyndi) Roden of Berlin; a daughter, Melissa (Don) Roberts of Holly Pond; two grandchildren, Lauren and Brooke Roberts of Holly Pond; and two nephews, James Roden and Billy Tom Blankenship.

Pallbearers will be Zach Nail, Chris Wisener, Jeff Whatley, James Roden, Paul Brown and Billy Oliver.

Visitation will be this morning until noon at the funeral home.

Betty Maxine Graves

Graveside services for Betty Maxine Graves, 73, of Garden City will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Garden City Cemetery, the Revs. Donald Abbott and Robert Earl Brumbley officiating.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Graves died Tuesday, May 24 in Garden City.

Paul Allen Barnett

Graveside services for Paul Allen Barnett, 58, of Arkadelphia will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Valley View Cemetery, the Rev. Paul Rivers officiating.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barnett died Tuesday, May 23 in Arkadelphia.

James E. Pace

Funeral services for James E. Pace, 57, of Garden City will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Union Grove Baptist Church in Bremen, Wayne Williams officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pace died Monday, May 23 at Carraway Medical Center.

Shirley Kilpatrick

Funeral services for Shirley Kilpatrick, 65, of Cullman will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Moss-Service Chapel, with Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, May 24 at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

James Carl Green

Funeral services for James Carl Green, 45, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Moss-Service Chapel, the Rev. Vernon Willis officiating, with Burial in Gum Pond Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Green died Monday, May 23 at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

Alan Ray Bentley

Funeral arrangements for Alan Ray Bentley, 52, are incomplete and will be announced at a later time by Williams-McCracken Funeral Home.

Mr. Bentley died Tuesday, May 24.

Henry Marlin King

Funeral services for Henry Marlin King, 72, of Cullman, formerly of Blount County, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Bro. Elwyn Thomas and the Revs. Bobby Hullett and L.G. Jones officiating, with Burial in Dailey's Chapel Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services.

Valley Chapel of Oneonta is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. King died Monday, May 23 at his residence. He was born in Blount County to William Thomas and Eula Mae Jones King. He was retired from North Alabama Skill Center and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sons, Henry Marlin King Jr. and Thomas Huey "Hank" King.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Almen King of Cullman; a daughter, Helen Dunn Lee of Cullman; three grandchildren, Sarah, Katelyn and Laura Dunn; a brother, Denton King of Georgia; three sisters, Velma Griffith and Frances Guyton, both of Gadsden, and Tommye Faust of Birmingham; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Stephen J. King Park Preservation Fund in care of Martha King, 410 Quail Ridge Road, Oneonta, AL 35121.

Pallbearers will be Garlon Griffith, Sherman Guyton, Jimmy Perry, Jason Griffith, Josh Perry and Greg Gowens.

Sister Mary Justina Wickham

Sister Justina Wickham, O.S.B., 92, died Friday afternoon in the Sacred Heart Monastery infirmary after a long illness. As Sister died, Sister Janet Marie Flemming, O.S.B., prioress, two former prioresses, and most of the sisters, who had just finished their annual retreat, gathered around her with prayer and song.

Sister's body will be brought home at 4:45 p.m. today for Vespers of the Dead, and friends may visit in the chapel until 8:30 p.m. The Eucharist of the Resurrection will be celebrated Monday at 3 p.m. in Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel by the Rev. Thomas O'Connor, O.S.B., monk of St. Bernard Abbey and chaplain of the monastery. Sister Janet Marie will give a reflection at the end of Mass, and Father Thomas will lead the prayer service for Sister's interment in Sacred Heart's cemetery.

Sister Justina was born Nora Belle Wickham in 1913 in Slayden, Tenn., one of nine children of Enoch Tanner and Lena (Annie) Yarbrough Wickham, both deceased. She was baptized in the Immaculate Conception Church in Clarksville, Tenn., near her parents' large farm. In 1941, she entered Sacred Heart Monastery, where she made her final monastic profession in 1946.

Accomplished in culinary arts, Sister Justina spent most of her life managing the kitchen at Sacred Heart Monastery and Sacred Heart Academy and Colllege. To enhance her skills, she attneded workshops in Duluth, Minn., and Stone Hill, Mass. In some years, she created a vegetable garden, delighting to supply food for the table and to win county fair prizes.

Also accomplished in arts and crafts, Sister was known for her beautiful quilts (also fair prizes) and for her ceramics, especially for a set of vessels for the Mass, a chalice, paten and water and wine cruets.

Sister's favorite recreation was fishing, most of the time in the monastery's "Lake" Maurus and at Smith Lake. She also enlivened the sisters' recreations by being an avid competitor at card games, much of the time emerging the winner.

One of the greates joys of Sister Justina's life was a pilgrimage to the Holy Land led by Sister Maurus Allen and accompanies by Sister Monica Vogt. To finance her trip, she baked and sold bread for several years. She visited all of the Holy Sites "from Dan to Beersheba" and even fished in the Sea of Galilee.

Sister is survived by her Benedictine sisters; by her sister Mary W. Evans; a sister-in-law, Sarah Wickham, who visited her frequently during recent years as she was confined to bed; and by many nephews and nieces.

Jonathan Lee Smith

Funeral services for Jonathan Lee Smith, 22, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2005, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Craig Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Cullman Heritage Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Smith died June 6, in Fallujah, Iraq. He was born April 9, 1983, in Carroll County, Ga. He was killed in action while conducting combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Survivors include his parents, Garry andd Donna Dean Smith; a sister, Adrienne Smith; and his grandparents, Ira and Jean Smith of Carrollton, Ga., and Bobby and Jane Dean of Roopville, Ga.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hascal Doyle Burden

Funeral services for Hascal Doyle Burden, 84, of Vinemont, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2005, at Corinth West Methodist Church, Wayne Jetton, Bill Mark and Mack Carter officiating. Burial will be the church cemetery. The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burden died Friday, June 10, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Winston County to Monroe Nelson and Liela Maryjane Butler Burden. He was a retired bus driver with the Cullman County Board of Education. He served in the armed services during World War II.

Mr. Burden was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Annie Myrl Hogan Burden; four brothers, Jim, Gurley, Euel and Curtis; and four sisters, Bertha Ora, Pearl, Opal and Frances.

Survivors include a son, Stewart Victor (Renda) Burden; two daughters, Patina Bright and Chiquita (Randy) Barnes; a twin sister, Hazel Etoile Powell; four sisters-in-law, Shirley Burden, Opal Smith, Faynell (Curtis) Smith and Melba Aris; a brother-in-law, Fred Hogan; nine grandchildren, Patrick (Delila) Bright, Jennifer (Mark) Persall, Josh (Jackie) Barnes, Beau (Stephanie) Burden, Ben Barnes, Elizabeth Burden, Scott Barnes, Misti Lancaster and Kristy Lancaster; six great-grandchildren, Alan Bright, Kayti Persall, Hollie Bright, Kati Haynes, Jake Burden and Isaac Lancaster; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Burden's grandsons.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ruth Olivie Cason

Funeral services for Ruth Olivie Cason, 80, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Welti Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Charles York officiating, with Burial in the church cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cason died Thursday, Feb. 24 at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Sipsey to George Washington and Roberta Hopkins Isabell. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Lamar Cason; a son, Bruce Cason; two granddaughters, Tammy Annette Cason and Wyndi Cason; and a grandson, Brandon Cason.

Survivors include six sons, Joe (Carol) Cason, Kenneth (Linda) Cason and Roger (Cathy) Cason, all of Cullman, Jerry (Pam) Cason of Blountsville, Darrell (Debbie) Cason of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Thomas (Kay) Cason of Warrior; a daughter, Annette (Greg) Baughman of Cullman; a brother, T.J. Isabell of Sumiton; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Master Sgt. Raymond E. Douglas

Funeral services for Master Sgt. Raymond E. Douglas, 46, of Bossier City, La., will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, with Burial in Cross Roads Cemetery with full military honors.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Master Sgt. Douglas died Friday, Feb. 18 at his residence. He was born Sept. 16, 1958, in Hamilton to Raymond C. Douglas and Claudia Marks Douglas. He proudly served our country for 24 years in the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Dustin Leigh Douglas.

Survivors include two sons, Kelley E. (Jacy) Douglas of Huntsville and Kyle R. Douglas of Texas; a daughter, Emily E. Douglas of Texas; four brothers, Curtis Douglas, David Douglas, Teddy Williams and Kevin Williams of Cullman; four sisters, Mittie Wisner, Tammie Schwaiger, Melissa Tolbert and April Williams of Cullman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Friday.

John Denney Jr.

Funeral services for John Denney Jr., 53, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Midway Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. Eddie Powell officiating, with Burial in Rock Springs Cemetery in Blountsville.

Mr. Denney died Thursday, Feb. 24 in Hanceville.

Ollie Stewart Benefield

Funeral services for Ollie Stewart Benefield, 94, of Gadsden will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Collier-Butler Chapel, the Revs. E.J. Reynolds and Gary Taylor officiating, with Burial in Brooklyn Methodist Cemetery in Cullman.

Collier-Butler Funeral Home of Gadsden is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Benefield died Thursday, Feb. 24. She was a charter member of the Cathedral of Praise Church, formerly the Alabama City Church of God. She was a homemaker and loved taking care of her children. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by a son, John Lewis Benefield; a grandchild, Robby Dean Benefield; her parents, Charles Lewis Stewart and Lela Odom Stewart; and a brother, Opy Reid Stewart.

Survivors include her children, Lela May Allison, Thomas Charles (Jean) Benefield, George William (Martha) Benefield, Clarence Edward (Lucy Faye) Benefield and Patsy Lawson; a daughter-in-law, Jeanie Walker Benefield; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, James M. Stewart, John W. Stewart and Chole S. Stewart; four sisters, Ethel Stewart Knowles, Edna Stewart Pate, Nellie Stewart Cornutt and Alice Stewart Kelley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Benefield's family.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
