Gaines

OXFORD

Graveside services for Ethelyn Roberts Gaines, 86, of Oxford will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Oxford Memorial Gardens with Revs. Jerry Starling and Chris Spurlin and Barry Grizzard officiating and Miller Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends 5-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gaines died Sunday at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Pate of Talladega; a son and his wife, LeRoy and Beverly Gaines of Ohatchee; two sister, Dot Dempsey and Evelyn Owen, both of Oxford; five grandchildren, LeAnn Meshal, Hinton Gaines, Aaron Lee Pate, Anthony Pate and Pattie Gamel; and 15 great-grandchildren, Candice Pate, Haley Pate, Eva Meshal, Alex Meshal, Sabrina Gaines, Alessandro Gaines, Landon Gaines, Jonathan Gamel, Allisa Gamel, Lauren Conway-Pate, Ashleigh Pate, Colton Pate, Samantha Setser, Skylus Setser and Ashley Otts.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Pate, Aaron Lee Pate, Hinton Gaines, Allen Gamel, Billy Dempsey, Chester Huckaby, Khaled Meshal and Gerald Owens. Honorary pallbearers will be residents of Oxford House.

Mrs. Gaines was a lifelong resident of Oxford and a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.T. Gaines, who was a former Oxford City councilman. She was the owner and operator of Lakeview Beauty Shop.

Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the Lakeview Baptist Church Building Fund.

CENTRE

Services for Helen Pierce Gentry, 53, of Centre will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Centre Congregational Holiness Church with Revs. Leslee Bailey, Bobby Hooper and Billy Saxon officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Springs Cemetery with Perry Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends today after 2 p.m. at 1225 Sand Valley Road, Centre.

Mrs. Gentry died Sunday in Gadsden.

Survivors include her husband, Edgar Gentry; a daughter, Stacey Gentry of Piedmont; two sons, Ronnie Gentry and Jimmy Gentry, both of Centre; five sisters, Geneva Boyoung and her husband, James, Elouise Henson and Brenda Holcomb and her husband, Junior, all of Centre, Barbara Dickenson and her husband, Joe, of Leesburg and Betty Lands and her husband, Charles, of Fort Payne; three brothers and their wives, Larry and Frances Pierce and Charles and Dene Pierce, all of Centre and Stanley and Linda Pierce of Summerville, Ga.; a special friend, Wade Johnson and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Joey Dickenson, Leon Bing, Randall Bing, Shane Hanson, Bernie Pierce, Harvey Bing and Darrell Gentry.

Mrs. Gentry was a native of Cherokee County and the daughter of the late Floyd and Violet Gossett Pierce. She was a homemaker.

Groce

LINCOLN

Services for Maggie P. Groce, 86, of Lincoln will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Bishop J.W. Wren officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Church Cemetery with Sims Funeral Service in charge. The body will be at the church an hour prior to services.

Ms. Groce died Wednesday at St. Clair Regional Hospital in Pell City.

Survivors include a daughter, Trina Sims of Pell City; a son, Elder Antoine Thomas of Lincoln; a sister, Mildred White of Hartford, Conn., two grandchildren, nine nieces and 10 nephews.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Ms. Groce was a native of Fabric Town, Ga., and had lived in Lincoln most of her life. She was a member of Freewill Church of God in Christ.

Hazel

Services for David Cecil Hazel, 45, of Anniston will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Crematory in Jacksonville with Rev. Gene Burns officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Hazel died Sunday at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Entrekin Hazel of Anniston; a daughter, April Floyd of Jacksonville; a son, James Hazel of Piedmont; a sister, Judi Hall of Douglasville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jacqueline Alexis Hazel and Benjamin Thomas Hazel; his grandmother, Vernice Weaver of Opelika, and four nieces and four nephews.

Pallbearers will be William Russell, Johnny Fincher, Ronnie Fincher, Boyd Coppock, Chris Headrick and Jimmy Hinton. Honorary pallbearers will be the blue shift employees of Union Yarn Mill.

Mr. Hazel was a native of Cedartown, Ga., and had worked for 26 years at Union Yarn Mill. He was an Air Force Reserve veteran and a Baptist.

Johnson

EASTABOGA

Services for Lottie Claire Mitchum Johnson, 48, of Eastaboga will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory with Revs. Charles Israel and Ronald Williams officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnson died Monday at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, George Leslie Johnson of Eastaboga; three sons, Jimmy Salter, Kevin Salter and Chris Johnson, all of Coldwater; her parents, Hiram E. and Leverne Mitchum of Oxford; a sister, Melba Amos of Eastaboga; two brothers, Don Edward Mitchum of Oxford and Allen Mitchum of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Kasey Salter, Deven Salter and Tommy Salter.

Pallbearers will be nephews and family friends.

Mrs. Johnson was employed by United Defense 25 years and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Mitchum.

Lindsey

Graveside services for Ruby Caroline Lindsey, 92, of Anniston will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Edgemont Cemetery with Rev. Mike Foreman officiating and Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in charge. The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lindsey died Sunday at Beverly Health Care Center in Oxford.

Survivors include two sons, David Lindsey of Anniston and Jerry Lindsey of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a sister, Norella Ray of Smiths; and a grandchild, Phillip Glenn Lindsey.

Mrs. Lindsey was a member of First Baptist Church in Anniston for many years and co-owned Jerry Lindsey's Alignment Shop for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Lindsey.

Services for Nellie Marie Matson, 65, of Anniston will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory with Dr. Mike Holcomb officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Matson died Sunday in Talladega.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy L. Matson of Talladega; a daughter, Eugenia Payne of Anniston; two sons, Timothy L. Matson of Anniston and David W. Matson of Leeds; a brother, Marvin H. Sweatt of Pell City; four grandchildren, Kimberly Brackett, Joseph Wright, Shaun Matson and Laura Kendall, and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be deacons of Westwood Baptist Church.

Mrs. Matson was a native of St. Clair County and had lived in Anniston for 40 years. She was retired from J.C. Penney and was a member of Westwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert A. Matson.

Mitchell

Services for Lillian Thrower Mitchell, 81, of Anniston will be today at 2 p.m. at Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel with Rev. Nelson Kuykendall officiating. Burial will be in Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mitchell died Sunday in Anniston.

Survivors include a sister and her husband, Sara Thrower Eddings and James Eddings of Hoover; seven nieces and nephews, Beth T. Gilbert and her husband, Terry, of Birmingham, Barry Thrower and his wife, Connie, of Heflin, Catherine E. Story and her husband, James, of Pelham, Carol Sims and Rebecca E. Barksdale and her husband, Brian, all of Hoover, Elizabeth E. Clenny and her husband, Gene, of Dothan and James T. Eddings and his wife, Beth, of Alabaster.

Mrs. Mitchell was a native and a former resident of Heflin, where she taught with the Cleburne County School System. She was a longtime resident of Calhoun County and a member of Golden Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, retired Lt. Col. Ralph W. Mitchell; a son, Ralph W. Mitchell Jr.; and a brother, Cecil I. Thrower.

Shirey

JACKSONVILLE

Services for Mabel Poole Shirey, 90, of Jacksonville, formerly of DeKalb County, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at W.T. William Funeral Chapel near Fyffe. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Fort Payne. The family will receive friends two hours prior to service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Shirey died Sunday in Fort Payne.

Survivors include a son, Rodney D. Shirey of Jacksonville; a daughter, Dianne Walker of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Janet Poole Steele of Fort Payne; five grandchildren, Landon Shirey, Michael Walker, Ben Walker, Scott Walker and Lauren Shirey; and a great-grandchild, T.J. Walker.

Mrs. Shirey was a native of DeKalb County and a graduate of Geraldine High School, where she was a member of the state championship basketball team of 1929. She attended Jacksonville Normal School and was a charter member of First Baptist Church in Geraldine. She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Fort Payne and Scottsboro and a member of Kelly's Chapel in DeKalb County. She was a former elementary school teacher and she and her late husband, Valdor T. Shirey, were the owners of Shirey's Home Center in Fort Payne.

Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church of Jacksonville.

Henry Coolidge Brown

Graveside services for Henry Coolidge Brown, 73, of Heflin were held Aug. 29 with Rev. Michael Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Old Hopewell Cemetery. Dryden Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Mr. Brown died Aug. 24. He was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Heflin. Mr. Brown was a native and life long resident of Cleburne County. He was retired farmer.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Devany of Mt. Clemens, Mich., and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were friends.

Jorge Antonio Chandler

Services for infant Jorge Antonio Chandler, one month, were held Aug. 30 at Miller Funeral Home of Tallapoosa, Ga., with Rev. Allen Wilburn officiating. Burial followed in the Muscadine Camp Ground Church Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Infant Chandler died Aug. 27 at DeKalb Medical Center in Decatur, Ga. He was born July 29 at Dekalb Medical Center to Regina Chandler and Jorge Lopez.

Survivors include his parents Regina Chandler and Jorge Lopez of Tallapoosa, Ga.; grandmothers, Hazel Turner of Tallapoosa, Ga.and Berlin Lopez of Mexico; grandfathers, Dennis Chandler of Muscadine, and Antonio Lopez of Mexico; great-grandmothers, Jackie Chandler and Hazel Chandler, both of Tallapoosa, Ga.; aunts and uncles.

Ray Edward Greene

Services for Ray Edward Greene, 65, of Duluth, Ga., were held Aug. 31 at Duluth First United Methodist Church with Rev. Coy Hinton officiating. Burial followed in the Lower Cane Creek Cemetery. Dryden Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Mr. Greene died Aug. 28 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Greene was a native of Macon, Ga. As a graduate of Georgia, Tech, an inventor, and engineer, Green also served as pharaoh and czar in alternating terms. He had recently retired from Eco-Tech, Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Jones Greene of Duluth; his mother, Edna Chapman Greene of Columbus, Ga.; a daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Greene, of Jackscon, Wyo.; a stepdaughter, Mary Elizabeth Epps of Atlanta; a son, Brian Edward Greene of Suwanee, Ga.; a stepson, David Lee Epps of Marietta; a sister, Loma Grenne Denny of Columbus, Ga.; a brother, Roy Hill Greene, Jr. of Gainsville, Ga.; and one grandchild.

Pallbearers were David Epps, Brian Greene, Bart Jones, Johnny Stallings, Elmo Richardson, Roy Greene and Tom Jones.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Atlanta 1244 Park Vista Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30319.

Robert Leroy Lambert

Robert Leroy Lambert, 81, of Muscadine died Aug. 29. Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Lambert was a native of Williamsport, Penn., and had resided most of his life in Connecticut. He was a resident of Muscadine for the past 17 years. He was an active Shriner and was a member of the Sphnix Temple of Hartford, Conn. Mr. Lambert was a previous member of the Democratic Town Committee of Heflin and was chairman of the Industrial Park Committee of Cleburne County. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the United States Air Force and was a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie Lambert of Muscadine; two daughters, Donna Pinherio of Providence, R.I. and Kathy Marino of Bowdon, Ga.; a son, Mark Lambert of Southbury, Conn.; a sister, Dorris Clapper, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Jack Lambert of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of East Alabama, P.O. Box 2581, Anniston, AL 36202 or to St. Judes Childrens Hospital, 332 North Lauderdale Street, Memphis, TN 38105.

Wilfred Henry Webb

Services for Wilfred Henry "Bill" Webb, 79, of Heflin were held Sept. 1 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill cemetery. Dryden Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Mr. Webb died Aug. 27. He was born May 15, 1922, in Heflin. He had lived in Oklahoma from 1981 until 1999 when returned to Cleburne County to make his home. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. His occupation was a welder.

Survivors include two daughters, Holly Dunn of Pensacola, Fla., and Jean Sanders of Atlanta, Ga.; three sons, Gary S. Webb of Katy, Texas, W.A. Long of Heflin and Jimmy Long of Oxford; 15 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kavin Long, Walter Ader, Allen Long, Andy Barnette, Stanley Grubbs, and Bobby Sanders.
