Elston

Services for Alberta Avery Elston, 97, of Anniston will be today at 1 p.m. at Murray Temple C.M.E. with the Rev. Sudealia H. Douthard officiating. Burial will be in Edgemont Cemetery with Ervin Funeral Home in charge. The body will be at the church an hour before services.

Mrs. Elston died Thursday at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include three daughters, Jessie L. Davis of Anniston, Mary F. Williams of Ohatchee and Doris J. Boyd of Hobson City; three sons, Wallace Elston and Walter Elston, both of Anniston, and Clarence E. Elston of San Diego, Calif.; two adopted sons, Reuben Q. Johnson of Anniston and Clinton J. Johnson Jr. of Huntsville; two sisters-in-law, Alberta Curry and Eva B. Ross, both of Anniston; 33 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Mrs. Elston was a longtime member of Players Chapel CME Church where she served as church treasurer and president of the stewardess board. She later joined Murray Temple CME Church where she continued her services as a Stewardess.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Elston; a son, Junior; and four daughters, Era Bell, Vera Bell Elston, Rosa L. Montgomery and Nellie E. Johnson.

Hendrix

OXFORD

Services for Mrs. Dorothy Miller Hendrix, 82, of Oxford will be Thursday at noon at Antioch Baptist Church with the Revs. Ronnie Moore and Craig Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Oxford Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hendrix died Monday at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Ray Hendrix of Heflin and Harry C. Hendrix of Anniston; five daughters, Juanita Faye Waldrop of Munford, Harriet Frances Carrell of Oxford, Patricia M. Griffin of Saks, T. Sharon Wilkinson of Golden Springs and Marion Minet of Joliet, Ill; a sister, Francis Ray of Georgia; 24 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Arthur Coley, Rodney Griffin, Michael Griffin, Johnny Williams, Buckey Hendrix, Stanley Coley, Jeffrey Coley and Keith Griffin.

Mrs. Hendrix was a Calhoun County resident, a member of Antioch Baptist Church, a member of the Oxford Senior Citizens Group, and a Pink Lady volunteer at Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Morton Hendrix; and a daughter, Janet Gayle Hendrix.

Hertel

Services for Col. Oliver Rollo Hertel, 91, of Anniston will be today at 2 p.m. at Forestlawn Mausoleum with the Rev. Rebecca Littlejohn officiating. Entombment will be in Forestlawn Mausoleum with Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel in charge.

Col. Hertel died Monday.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Evelyn Hertel of Anniston; a son-in-law, Dr. Daniel M. Potter of Harwick, Pa.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be trustees and elders of First Christian Church, and members of Anniston Fraternal Masonic Lodge 700.

Mr. Hertel was a native of Nebraska. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded six Silver Stars during World War II, and other medals. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 700, the Sojourners, the York Rite, and the Scottish Rite. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he was a longtime treasurer, an elder emeritus, and a trustee. When he retired from Fort McClellan, he was with the Chemical Corp. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Sandra Potter; and a brother, Ralph Floyd Hertel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1327 Leighton Ave., Anniston, AL 36207, or a favorite charity.

Qualls

CENTRE

Graveside services for Thelma Jewel Qualls, 81, of Centre will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Cherokee Memory Gardens with the Rev. Monroe Green officiating and Jordan Funeral Home of Centre in charge. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Qualls died Monday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Duncan and Pat Bennett, both of Centre, and Linda Simmons of Southside; two brothers, Jessie Stokes and Charles Stokes, both of Centre; two sisters, Louise Gossett of Centre and Cealey Killingworth of Birmingham; a special aunt, Goldie Hooper of Cedar Bluff; two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Arnez Stokes, Ricky Stokes, Clifford Stokes, Claude Hooper Jr., Larry Russell and Todd Russell.

Mrs. Qualls was a native of Cherokee County, a homemaker and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her parents, John William and Viola Hooper Stokes.

Richardson

CENTRE

Services for John Excell Richardson, 85, of Centre, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Perry Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ed Coogler and Ronald Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Memory Gardens with Perry Funeral Home in Charge. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Richardson died Monday at his residence.

Survivors include his wife, Floyce Hanks Richardson of Centre; three sons, Harlan Richardson and wife Janet, Jerry Richardson and wife Jane, and Hank Richardson and wife Shelia, all of Centre; a daughter, Shelia Mobley of Centre; a brother, James Richardson of Houston, Tex.; a sister, Ruth Brock of Centre; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ben Richardson, Luke Richardson, John Richardson, Daniel Richardson, Brad Walker, Lee Gladden and Danny Chesnut. Honorary pallbearers will be Clay Richardson and Mark Richardson.

Mr. Richardson was a native of Cherokee County. He was a retired farmer, a deacon of Providence Baptist Church since 1971, member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Federation for 50 years, and a veteran of World War II.

Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, or the family will accept flowers.

Burkett
ROANOKE

Services for Mary Louise Hamlin Burkett, 94, of Roanoke, formerly of Thomaston, Ga., will be today at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church in Thomaston with Dr. Rex King and Rev. James A. Coogler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Burkett died Tuesday at her home.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Burkett Shelnutt of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Rex Shelnutt and Greg Shelnutt; and three great-grandchildren, Whitney Shelnutt, Austin Shelnutt and Taylor Shelnutt.

Mrs. Burkett was a native of Bibb County, Ga., and was retired from the twisting department of B.F. Goodrich Company. She was the last charter member and the oldest member of Mountain View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Burkett.

Cole

MONTGOMERY

Graveside services for Mae King Cole, 93, of Montgomery, formerly of Talladega, will be today at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega with Usrey Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends 12:30-1:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cole died Monday at Capitol Hill Health Care Center.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Dunn of Tallapoosa, Ga.; nine grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Mrs. Cole was a native of Clay County and had lived in Talladega most of her life. She had lived in Montgomery since 1984. She attended Bemiston Baptist Church and was retired from Bemis Co. Inc. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Clifford Cole; a daughter, Mildred Marie Tebo; and three sons, John Lavell Cole, Robert Byron Cole and James Clifford Cole.

Cole

Services for V.J. "Bunk" Cole, 74, of Anniston will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home Chapel in Anniston with Rev. Homer Longoria officiating. Burial will be in Young's Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Cole died Wednesday at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Rita Cole Youngblood and Norman Youngblood, and Tilda Cole Wilson and Will Wilson, all of Anniston; four sisters, Mildred Freeman, Ethel Roper and Bevlin Sheppard, all of Anniston and Ressie Ward of Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, Elbert Lee Cole and William Cole, both of Anniston; his primary caregiver, Pat Austin; and three grandchildren, Taylor Youngblood and his wife, Kara, Hunter Cole Youngblood and Breezy Nicole Wilson.

Pallbearers will be Will Wilson, Norman Youngblood, Taylor Grant Youngblood, Hunter Cole Youngblood, Larry Joe Ford and Kenneth Ford. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of Cole Tree Service.

Mr. Cole was a native of Talladega and had lived in Calhoun County most of his life. He was the owner of Cole Tree Service and was a World War II Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Ford Cole, and a son, Vernon J. Cole Jr.

Faulkner

WEAVER

Graveside services for Thomas Faulkner, 74, of Weaver will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Phenix City with Rev. Dan E. Allen officiating and Chapel Hill Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Faulkner died Saturday at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian H. Faulkner of Weaver; two daughters, Blanche G. Allen of Deerfield Beach, Fla. and Leamarie True of Douglasville, Ga.; two sisters, Lettie Norman of Odessa, Texas and Jewel James of Longview, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Arbie Faulkner of Longview and Bettie Faulkner of Milton- Freewater, Ore.; and four grandchildren, Alaric True, Aleoner True, Danielle Metzger and Derek Allen.

Pallbearers will be members of the military.

Mr. Faulkner was a native of Texas and was an Army and a World War II veteran. He was a member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church.
