Swanson

Graveside services for Marjorie Lucille Swanson, 88, of Anniston will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Gardens with Rev. Franklin Carter officiating and Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in charge. The family will receive friends noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Swanson died Friday at Jefferson Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include two sons, Howard Paul Swanson of Oxford and Ralph Nels Swanson II of Birmingham, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Swanson had lived in Anniston many years and was a member of First Christian Church. She was the previous owner and operator of Dairy Queen and had opened the first Dairy Queen in the state of Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Nels Swanson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Christian Church or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Unold

CALHOUN, Ga.

Services for Howard John Unold Jr., 77, of Calhoun will be today at 2 p.m. at the Combs Chapel of Clifford Free Funeral Home in Calhoun with Rev. Ross Tipps officiating. Burial will be in Chandler Cemetery.

Mr. Unold died Wednesday in Oxford.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Cutter Unold of Calhoun; three daughters, Karla Davie of Oxford, Karen Rodriquez of Huntsville and Kristine Tibbitt of Houston, Texas; a stepson, Robert Sturtz of Sugar Valley; a stepdaughter, Kay Alemi of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Phyllis Avery of Courtlant, N.Y., and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Unold was a native of Elmira, N.Y. He was an Army World War II veteran and was a graduate of Syracuse University. He taught school for many years and retired from the Burke County School System, where for eight years he was principal of Burke Junior High School. He had lived in Calhoun since 1983 and had taught at Dalton College for five years. He was a member of New Echota United Methodist Church.

Bartlett

CEDAR BLUFF

Graveside services for Lena Sue Bartlett, 81, of Cedar Bluff will be today at 2 p.m. at Cedar Bluff Cemetery with Perry Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Bartlett died Friday at Cherokee County Nursing Home.

Survivors include a niece, Shirley McPherson of Huntsville; a great nephew, Phillip Thompson, and a great niece, Lou Anne Albritton.

Mrs. Bartlett was a Cherokee County native and the daughter the late Charles and Evie Daniel Neely. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Bartlett.

Bates

CENTRE

Services for Walter Harvey Bates, 69, of Centre will be today at 2 p.m. at Weiss Lake Church of God with Revs. Jerry Wright and Donnie Kimmons officiating. Burial will be in Neal Hill Cemetery with Centre Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Bates died Friday at Cherokee Baptist Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bates of Centre; two sons, Larry Bates and Tommy Bates, both of Centre; a daughter, Carolyn Abernathy of Centre; two stepsons, David White of Centre and Richard White of Gadsden; three stepdaughters, Jane Garner of Gadsden, Barbara Nail of Centre, and Reba Long of Gadsden; two brothers, John Bates of Centre and Garvin Bates of Gadsden; a sister, Bertha Ragan of Gadsden; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Bundrum

JACKSONVILLE

Services for Charlotte Boozer Bundrum, 57, of Atlanta, formerly of Jacksonville, will be today at 1 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with Paul Leslie Sr., Don Boozer, Jerri Clay and Claudia Parks officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bundrum died Friday at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

Survivors include her husband, Sonny Bundrum of Atlanta; a son, Kenneth Bundrum of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Martha Marie Jones of Griffin, Ga.; four sisters, Edna Alldredge of Pell City, Carolyn Oakley of Atlanta, Robbie Medders of Jacksonville and Faye Lumpkin of Birmingham; four brothers, Ladson Boozer and Larry Joe Boozer, both of Jacksonville, Steve Boozer of Douglasville, Ga., and Don Boozer of Munford; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Barry Bundrum, Jacob Jones, Jared Jones, Justin Jones, Luke Bundrum and Chad Medders.

Mrs. Bundrum was a Calhoun County native. She attended Jacksonville High School and Georgia State College. She taught high school for 24 years in the Fulton County school system and was a three-time recipient of Teacher of the Year honors. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Sula Boozer and a sister, Gloria Boozer.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the local cancer association or to a favorite charity.

Cantrell

WOODLAND

Services for Katie Belle Cantrell, 86, of Woodland will be today at 2 p.m. at Highway First Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Vernon Willis and W.C. Cofield officiating and Benefield Funeral Home in charge. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. The body will be at the church one hour prior to services.

Mrs. Cantrell died Friday at Wedowee Hospital.

Survivors include four daughters, Annette Simms of Hogansville, Louree Richardson and Annie Ruth Dye, both of Woodland, and Carolyn Fields of Roanoke; five sons, Emory Cantrell and Viron Cantrell, both of Woodland, Rance Cantrell of Roopville, Ga., Earl Cantrell of Powder Springs, Ga., and Ussery Cantrell of Temple, Ga.; a sister, Marvelene Pinkard of Valley; 24 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Steve Cantrell, Phill Cantrell, Bobby Butler, Tony Richardson, Kenny Fields, Jeff Cantrell, John Butler, James Butler, Mark Richardson, Danny Dye, Chris Dye and Anthony Dye.

Mrs. Cantrell was a Randolph County native. She was a homemaker and a member of Highway First Congregational Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman V. Cantrell, and a grandchild, Robbie Cantrell.

Carter

CHICAGO, Ill.

Services for Charles Carter, 53, of Chicago, formerly of Anniston, will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Anniston Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Billy Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hill Cemetery with Anniston Funeral Service in charge. The body will be placed at the funeral home Sunday at 1 p.m.

Mr. Carter died Dec. 22 in Chicago.

Survivors include his wife, Cassandra Carter of Chicago; seven daughters, Sonya Barthnell and Valerie Carter, both of Americus, Ga.; Cheryl Morrow of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Tiffany Carter, Annette Carter and Rose Carter, all of Chicago; and Katrina Buie of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, Charles Carter Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. And Clarence Land of Chicago; his mother, Cora Carter of Anniston; six sisters, Sylvia Thomas, Macy Carter, Barbara Carter, Norma Montgomery, Debra Harvey and Rose Carter, all of Anniston; five brothers, Harry Carter, Eugene Carter and Dennis Carter, all of Anniston, Roy Carter of Birmingham, and William Carter of Chicago; and 13 grandchildren.

Eagle

JACKSONVILLE

Services for Dwight Patton Eagle, 53, of Jacksonville will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mr. Eagle died Wednesday at his home.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise Bevan and her husband, James Bevan of Jacksonville; a son, Scott Eagle of Douglasville, Ga.; his mother, Ida Bell Stark Eagle of Jacksonville; two sisters, Diane Brown of Anniston and Terri Matter of California; and three brothers, Alan Eagle and Mike Eagle, both of Jacksonville, and Jim Eagle of Lexington, Ky.

Mr. Eagle was a retired truck driver for Anniston Army Depot. He was an Army Vietnam veteran.

Garrett

OXFORD

Graveside services for infant Payton Andrew Garrett of Oxford will be today at 2 p.m. at Coldwater Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jackie Morgan officiating and Miller Funeral Home in charge.

The infant died Wednesday at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his father and mother, Shane and Christie Garrett of Oxford; a grandfather, Randy Garrett of Oxford; and his grandmothers, Anna Garrett of Oxford and Donna Milstead of Munford; aunts Sandy Burke and Maranda Garrett; nieces Tara Burke and Savannah Stillwell and nephew Ethan Stillwell.

Harwell

Graveside services for Bobby Joe Harwell, 68, of Anniston will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. (CST) at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Phenix City, with the Rev. Mike Burgess officiating and Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in charge.

Mr. Harwell died Dec. 25 at McGuffey Health Care in Gadsden.

Survivors include two sisters, Betty Vinson of Anniston and Jane Hawkins of Atlanta.

Pallbearers will be Martin Vinson, Martin Vinson Jr. and Michael Vinson.

Mr. Harwell was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Albert Harwell.

Higgins

RAGLAND

Services for Geneva Byers Higgins, 84, of Ragland will be Monday at noon at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Ragland with the Revs. Ervin Taylor Jr. and S.C. Hudson officiating. Burial will be at Morning Star Cemetery with Terry's Metropolitan Mortuary of Talladega in charge. The body will be at the church an hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Higgins died Thursday at St. Clair Regional Medical Center in Pell City.

Survivors include a daughter, Sadie H. Byers of Ragland; a brother, Beason Byers of Ragland; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be nephews and deacons.

Mrs. Higgins was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Jesse E. Higgins; her parents, Frank and Fannie Watson Byers; seven brothers and four sisters.

She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a member and Past Worthy Matron of McGregor Chapter 670 of the Order of Eastern Star; she was awarded a diploma of Religious Education, a Bachelor of Religious Education and Doctor of Religious Education from Easonian Baptist Seminary and received numerous other awards for dedicated Christian services. She was a member of the district, state and national Baptist Convention.
