OXFORD

Services for Wanda Stovall Kidd, 50, of Oxford will be announced by Miller Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kidd died Wednesday at Regional Medical Center.

Levens

JACKSONVILLE

Services for Audrey Lee Levens, 36, of Jacksonville will be held at a later date with Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in charge.

Miss Levens died Tuesday at her home.

Survivors include her mother, Brenda Goodwin Nelson of Anniston; her father, Billy G. Levens of Lincoln; and a sister, Brenda Joyce Levens of Albertville.

Miss Levens was a graduate of the Helen Keller School in Talladega and was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by a brother, Billy F. Levens; and her grandparents, Dora and Audrey Levens and Lelya and F.M. Goodwin.

Services for Edward N. Mangum, 77, of Wellington will be announced by Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory in Anniston.

Mr. Mangum died Tuesday at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital.

Phillips

TALLADEGA

Memorial services for Jimmy Lawrence Phillips Sr., 58, of Talladega will be today at 10 a.m. at Southwood Presbyterian Church with Rev. Leann Scarborough officiating and Usrey Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Phillips died Tuesday at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair in Birmingham.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy J. Phillips of Talladega; a daughter, Kelli Phillips Wallace of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a son, Jim L. Phillips Jr. of Anniston; his mother, Gladys L. McCraven of Talladega; a sister, Patricia "Pat" Miller of Talladega, and four grandchildren.

Mr. Phillips was a native of Lincoln and had lived in Talladega most of his life. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Talladega and the manager of Propane Gas Co. in Talladega. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles H. Phillips.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations can be made to the American Red Cross.

RIVERSIDE

Services for Raymond Nathaniel Saulter, 62, of Riverside will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Pell City. Burial will be in Morning Star Cemetery in Ragland. The family will receive friends two hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Saulter died Tuesday.

Mr. Adams died Monday at his home.

Blair

OHATCHEE

Graveside services for Victor P. "Vic" Blair, 80, of Ohatchee will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Brewton Cemetery in Claxton, Ga., with Collier-Butler Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Gadsden.

Mr. Blair died Saturday.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Houar, Donna Rayl, Keith Dowdy, Joe McEachern, Melvin Ramsey, Robert Whorton, Bobby McKee, Harold Burgess, Mary Miller and all personal friends.

Mr. Blair was a native of south Georgia, had lived in Hawaii many years and had lived in the Anniston and Gadsden area for a number of years. He retired as a major from the Army and was a member of the Episcopal Church.

Mr. Blessing died Sunday at his home.

Deemer

OXFORD

Graveside services with full military honors for retired Army Master Sgt. James A. Deemer, 69, of Oxford will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Chulafinnee Methodist Cemetery with a military chaplain officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel.

Mr. Deemer died Monday at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Young Deemer of Oxford; two sisters, Patrica McCade and Marie Quezada, both of Pennsylvania; five brothers, Charles Deemer, William Deemer, Edward Deemer, Daniel Deemer and Joseph Deemer, all of Pennsylvania, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be military.

Mr. Deemer was retired from Anniston Army Depot and was an Army veteran and a Mason. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Deemer and Helen Wizinski Deemer and a brother, Art Deemer.

Dempsey

JACKSONVILLE

Services for Avis Jeanette Dempsey, 84, of Jacksonville were Monday at 2 p.m. at Angel Grove Baptist Church. Revs. Gene Burgess and Larry Hughes officiated. Burial was in Patterson Cemetery with K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Crematory in charge.

Mrs. Dempsey died Saturday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Janda and Buddy Ledbetter of Piedmont; a son and his wife, Gary and Patsy Dempsey of Jacksonville; a brother, Crawford Couch of Jacksonville; a grandchild, Chris Dempsey, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Bobby Whorton, Luther Morgan, Earl Lockette, Larry Couch, Derrel Jordan, Danny Lakins, Sam Pritchette and James Haynes.

Mrs. Dempsey was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County and a member of Asberry Baptist Church. She was active in school fund raising. She was a charter member of the Calhoun County Family and Community Education Council, was active with the organization for more than 50 years, and was president of the Asberry Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernon Dempsey, and a brother, Garvin Couch.

Services for Thomas Edward Gurley, 82, of Talladega will be today at 2 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home with Rev. Willard Frederick officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Gurley died Sunday at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair in Birmingham.

Survivors include his wife, Annice Davis Gurley of Talladega; a son, Michael E. Gurley Sr. of Denver; a sister, Gladys Thackerson of Jemison, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Michael E. Gurley Jr., Dr. Douglas Gurley, Bill Hurst, Jack Bowden, Jerry Huffsteller and Carlton Highfield. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Southwood Presbyterian Church and friends.

Mr. Gurley was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County. He was a charter member of Southwood Presbyterian Church and was a World War II veteran and a retired carpenter. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas D. Gurley.

Services for Charlie Hairston, 57, of Roanoke will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Roanoke with Rev. Elijah Jackson officiating. Burial will be in East Roanoke Cemetery with Silmon Mortuary in charge. The body will be at the church an hour prior to services. The family will receive friends noon to 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Hairston died Friday at Randolph Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hairston of Roanoke; a daughter, Cassandra Hairston of Roanoke; two sons, Christopher Bo Hairston of Hall County, Ga. and Charlie Hairston of Roanoke; 10 sisters, Rosie L. Dardy and Annie R. Johnson, both of West Point, Ga., Nancy L. Varner and Mary H. Jackson, both of Lanett, Lizzie M. Hubbard of LaGrange, Ga., Emma R. Hubbard of Ypsilanti, Mich., Mattie R. Johnson of Atlanta, Evelyn Hairston and Dorothy Hairston, both of New Jersey and Evelyn Lee of Boston; two brothers, Arthur L. Hairston of Boston and Jessie R. Hairston of Ypsilanti; three grandchildren, Quillan Hairston, Jessica Hairston and Brittany Kirk; and his mother and father-in-law, Rev. Alfred and Ella Hill of Roanoke.

Mr. Hairston was a preceded in death by his parents, Brady Tom Hairston and Ollie Lee Atkinson Hairston; two brothers, John Willie Hairston Sr. and Brady Hairston, and four grandchildren.

Heifner

PALM COAST, Fla.

Graveside services for Fred R. Heifner, 85, of Palm Coast, formerly of Oxford, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Oxford Memorial Gardens with Miller Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Heifner died Friday at Memorial Hospital-Ormond.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Heifner; a daughter, Suzanne Adams, Erfurt, Germany; two sons, F. Randolph Heifner of St. Louis, and Dr. William R. Heifner of Oregon, Wis.; two sisters, Gussie Serpico of Arleta, Calif. and Violet Parks of Palm Coast, six grandchildren and four nephews and three nieces.

Mr. Heifner grew up in Oxford and attended Calhoun County High School. He attended Decatur Junior College in Decatur, Miss., and the University of Alabama. He was World War II Air Force veteran, having been part of the 5th Fighter Group stationed in China and India. He was an employee of Monsanto Company for 42 years and had retired in 1981. He was transferred from Anniston to St. Louis, in 1954. During his career at Monsanto, he worked in the research department and became a construction manager for major capital projects and worked in purchasing and the central engineering department. He had moved to the Palm Coast area in 1985 from St. Louis, and was active in the First Baptist Church of Palm Coast, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher many years.
