Nathan

ATLANTA

Graveside services for Sophie Nathan, 80, of Atlanta, formerly of Birmingham, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery with H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel in charge.

Mrs. Nathan died Sunday.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, George and Barbara Nathan of Atlanta and Mark Nathan of Alpharetta, Ga.; a sister and brother-in-law, Emmi and Hans Loewenstern of Philadelphia; ; and three grandchildren, Ted Nathan, and his wife, Melanie, Gil Nathan and Ben Nathan.

Mrs. Nathan was a homemaker and was affiliated with Temple Bethel-El in Anniston and Birmingham. She was active in the Jewish community and was a volunteer at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She was a Holocaust survivor and was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Nathan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 2951 Flowers Rd. South Ste. 211, Chamblee, GA 30341; or the National Holocaust Museum, Wallenberg Place, Washington, D.C. 20008.

Obryen

Services for Billy Ray Obryen Sr. of Anniston will be today at 2 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home with Revs. Gary Burns and Kelly Lee officiating. Burial will be in Plum Springs Cemetery in Lincoln. The family will receive friends two hours prior to service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Obryen died Sunday at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair in Birmingham.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Obryen of Anniston; two sons, John Anthony Obryen and Billy Ray Obryen Jr., both of Anniston; two daughters, Becky Woodrow and Christy Bright, both of Anniston; three sisters, Gloria Brimmer of Oxford and Betty Shular and Mary Frank Thrash, both of Anniston, seven grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Rex Teague, Burl Harbin, Benny Shears, Michael Davis, Lee Shiflett and Kyle Bright.

Mr. Obryen was retired from ANAD and had operated Hunter Street Curb Market.

Pippin

Graveside services for Michael Wade Pippin, 37, of Anniston will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bill Patterson officiating and Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in charge. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Pippin died Monday at his home.

Survivors include his parents, Barbara A. Pippin Swift and John R. Swift of Anniston; his father, James H. Pippin of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, James Scott Pippin of Anniston; aunts and uncles, Audrey T. Morton, Sue Oaks and Jerry G. Thrasher Jr., all of Ohatchee, Nancy A. Schommer of Lake Villa, Ill., Marion T. New of Elkmont and Doris Snow of Pell City; and his grandmother, Moett Pippin of Ohatchee.

Pallbearers will be William E. Phillips Jr., Ray E. Phillips, Chris Smith, Jackie Foster, Christopher Curvin and James T. Howard. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of AOD.

Mr. Pippin was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church and was employed by AOD. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael I. Stricklin; and his grandparents, Ira and Gladys Stricklin and Jerry and Evelyn Thrasher.

Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the Big Oak Boys Ranch.

Robinson

Services for Kenneth Darryl Robinson, 36, of Anniston will be today at 1 p.m. at 17th Street Baptist Church with Rev. N.Q. Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills Cemetery with Anniston Funeral Service in charge. The body will be at the church an hour prior to services.

Mr. Robinson died Wednesday at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Dorecka Robinson of Anniston; his mother, Inez Robinson of College, Park, Ga.; two sisters, Evonne Robinson of College Park and Collie Robinson of Anniston; and two brothers, Eddie Robinson of College Park and Gerald Robinson of Anniston.

Mr. Robinson was a native of Detroit and had lived in Anniston most of his life. He was a self-employed mechanic and was a member of 17th Street Baptist Church.

Services for Gaines Spears, 86, of Roanoke will be announced by Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee.

Stolz

Graveside services for Margaret Lillian Lengel Stolz, 99, of Anniston will be today at 11 a.m. at Forestlawn Gardens with Rev. Alex Stevens and Pastor Ronnie Harris officiating and Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel in charge. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Stolz died Sunday in Anniston.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Margery and Tom Nunnelley of Anniston, Elinor and Virgil Carl “Bud” Moe of Palm Desert, Calif. and Nancy England of Marion Junction; a sister and her husband, Betty and Jack Schott of Norristown, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Lucie and Kenneth Nelson, John Thomas “Tony” and Peggy Nunnelley Jr., David and Beth Nunnelley, Pam and Mike Jernigan, Cindy and Randy Hafer, Mary Moe, David and Kathy Moe, Mike and Susan England, Susan England and Cathy and Ronnie Harris, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stolz was born in Reading, Pa., in 1902 and was a graduate of Elmira College in New York with a degree in law and finance. She had lived in Anniston for 72 years and was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Most recently, she was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. She was a charter member of the Progressive Study Club of Anniston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew David Stolz; a son-in-law, Fred Lester England; and a sister, Evelyn Keim.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to The Talladega Presbyterian Home for Children, 905 Ashland Highway, Talladega, AL 35160; or the Church of the Good Shepherd, 461 Choccolocco Road, Anniston, AL 36207.

Bailey

VILLA RICA, Ga.

Services for Della Geraline Jordan Bailey, 71, of Villa Rica will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica with Allen Howard officiating. Burial will be in Melrose Hills Memorial Gardens in Paulding, Colo. The family will receive friends 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bailey died Friday at her home.

Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Jerry Robinson of Temple, Ga., Elaine and Bobby Hubbard of Anniston, Cheryl and Ricky Sullivan of Paulding, Colo. and Debbie and Gerald Wilson of Seminole, Okla.; three sons and their wives, Joseph and Joan Bailey of Anniston, Richard and Debbie Bailey of Carrollton, Ga. and Ronald Bailey of Villa Rica; two sisters, Bernice Slaton of Roopville, Ga. and JoAnn Jordan of Austell, Ga.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert A. and Lynn Jordan of Douglasville, Ga., 17 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Doug Robinson, Jason Robinson, Robbie Hubbard, Chris Hubbard, Shane Thomas and John Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be T.I. Bailey, Justin Bailey, Matthew Bailey, Michael Patrick and Marty Livingston.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of Bethany Christian Church in Carrollton and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor Oliver Jordan and Willie Iva Green Jordan; her husband, Talmage Hamilton Bailey; a son, Robert Paul Bailey; a daughter, Carol Ann Johnson; and two brothers, Willard Jordan and Wayne Jordan.

Mr. Carter died Friday in Anniston.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Cynthia C. and Paul S. Baker Jr. of Anniston; a sister, Grace Pace of Trenton, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Jackie M. Davis of Anniston; and two brothers, Joe Calvin Young of Coldwater and Wayne Young of Greenville.

Pallbearers will be Travis Skinner, Vernon Prather, Ricky Searcy, Lewis White, Josh Bearden, Billy Wilson, Jimmy Joe Prather and Randy Willis. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Carre’ Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church of Anniston.

Mr. Carter was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County. He was a graduate of Jacksonville State University and received his master’s degree from Peabody University. He retired as Federal Projects Coordinator for the Calhoun County Board of Education and served 22 years at DeArmanville School as principal, coach and teacher. He was a teacher at Saks before going to DeArmanville. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Anniston, where he served as president of the Carre’ Sunday School Class, and was a member of Dixie Hunting Club. He was a World War II veteran and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary M. Carter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carre’ Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church of Anniston, 1400 Noble St., Anniston, AL 36201; or the Hospice of East Alabama, P.O. Box 2581, Anniston, AL 36202.

Services for William Walter Gilbert, 78, of Talladega will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Usrey Funeral Home with Dr. Randy Hagan and Jack Owens officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 5-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Gilbert died Thursday at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Muriel Williams Gilbert of Talladega; four daughters, Patricia “Patsy” Gilbert Owens of Birmingham, Janice Gilbert Vincent of Central City, Ky., Cheryl Gilbert Stevens of Louisville, Ky. and Deborah “Debbie” Gilbert Owen of Meridian, Miss.; a sister, Bertha M. Tinsley of Sycamore; a brother, Claxton R. Gilbert of Talladega, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be “Beaver” Tinsley, Danny Williamson, Larry Williamson, Marty Williamson, Jeff Stevens, Tim Vincent, Matt Owen, Ron Williams and Mike Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Guinn, Charlie Jones, Lewis Horn, Doris Horn, Wallace Schuessler, Glenn Trammell and Alfred Mitchell.

Mr. Gilbert was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County. He was a member of Hepzibah Baptist Church and a 1942 graduate of Talladega High School. He attended the University of Georgia and was staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps in World War II and Korea. He was a contributing columnist to The Daily Home and a historian. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 361 and a genealogist. He was the owner and operator of Fair Park Equipment Co., Talladega Trailer Sales.
