WEST POINT -- Funeral services are pending for Mrs. Corine Birden, 83, of West Point, who died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at the Brian Health Care Center in LaGrange.

The family may be contacted at the residence of Mrs. Mattie Taylor, 1103D, Martin Luther King Drive, West Point.

VALLEY -- Funeral services are pending for Mr. Walter B. Strickland, 68, of Valley, who died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

MRS. SPARKS

VALLEY -- Mrs. Thelma Lee Clifford Sparks, 82, of Valley died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at Lanier Nursing Home.

Graveside services are scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett with the Revs. David Copeland, Theodore Mitchell and Shon Bryan officiating.

Mrs. Sparks is survived by three daughters, June (Kenneth) Oliver of Valley, Betty (Ferrell) Hale of Valley and Doris (Harvey) Dykes of Valley; one sister, Lois Breed; six grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Born in Crisp County, Ga. on Aug. 22, 1916, Mrs. Sparks was a member of Evangel Temple. She retired from West Point Pepperell after 40 years of service. Mrs. Sparks was the oldest member of Evangel Temple. She was preceded in death by her husband, Velpo Sparks.

The family will receive friends at Resthaven Funeral Home Monday, Aug. from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials can be made to Chattahoochee Hospice.

MRS. BROOKS

CAMP HILL -- Mrs. Gail Brooks, 43, of Camp Hill died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.

Funeral services were scheduled Monday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion East Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by her husband, Freddie L. Brooks of Camp Hill; one son, Renard K. Brooks of Camp Hill; her parents, Ted and Mary Moss of Dadeville; two sisters, Carolyn Moss of Dadeville and Mary (Allen) Askew of Camp Hill; four brothers, Larry Moss, Darryl (Sallie) Moss, Mike (Traci) Moss and Steven (Angela) Moss, all of Camp Hill; her grandmother, Carrie Webb of Waverly; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; seven aunts; six uncles; a special aunt, Robbie Pulliam; and a special uncle, William Moss Jr.

Mrs. Brooks was born in Tallapoosa County June 5, 1961. She was a member of Mt. Zion East Baptist Church of Camp Hill.

MR. DYKES

LaGRANGE -- Mr. Steven Ray Dykes, 21, of LaGrange died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at West Georgia Medical Center.

Funeral services were scheduled Monday, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Anthony Hovey and Jimmy Dykes officiating. Burial will follow in Hillview East Cemetery.

Mr. Dykes is survived by his mother and stepfather, Quintella and James Larry Allen of Valley; his father and stepmother, Ernie and Hope Dykes of LaGrange; two sisters, Holly Dykes Heckert of Phoenix Ariz., and Jill Dykes of LaGrange; a step-brother, Jonathan Allen of Valley; his grandparents, Jim and Eva Dykes of Cusseta, Louise McConnell of Valley, Ellis and Jan Freeman of Woodbury, Ga., and Annie Ruth Childers of Notasulga, Ala.; a great-grandmother, Helen Bendel of Cusseta; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Born in LaGrange on March 29, 1983, Mr. Dykes was a 2001 graduate of Callaway High School, and he had attended West Georgia Technical College. He was a valued employee of Stanford Automotive where he was highly regarded by his coworkers. Mr. Dykes was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his brother, Byron Dykes, and his maternal grandfather, Donald McConnell.

The family received friends at Striffley-Hamby Mortuary Sunday evening.

MRS. HORNSBY

LANETT -- Mrs. Evelyn R. Hornsby, 80, of Lanett died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Joyce Akridge officiating. Burial followed in Marseilles Cemetery in West Point.

Mrs. Hornsby is survived by one son, James (Pat) Hornsby of Salem, Ala.; two daughters, Jeanette Head of Opelika and Louise (Jimmy) Nelson of Lanett; and one sister, Doris (Gerald) Hart of Pigeon Forge, Tenn; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Born Nov. 24. 1923 in Alabama, Mrs. Hornsby was the daughter of the late Bessie Maude McCullough Rodgers and James Benjamin Rodgers. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

The family received friends Saturday evening at Johnson-Brown Funeral Home in Valley.

MR. HOWARD

LaFAYETTE -- Mr. Travis Lamar Howard, 35, of LaFayette died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

Graveside services are scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 2 p.m. at LaFayette City Cemetery with the Revs. Michael T. Stiggers and Terry L. Magby officiating.

Mr. Howard is survived by his father, Hig Clark Jr. of LaFayette; two sisters, JaTasha Howard of LaFayette and Sylvia Howard of Lanett; four special nieces, Nesha and Naporche Howard of Lanett and Kelsey and Bianca Howard of LaFayette; and his grandmother, Annie (Henry) Goodman of LaFayette.

Mr.Howard was born in Chambers County on May 10, 1969. He was a member of Freeman Chapel CME Church in LaFayette.

MRS. WARE

CAMP HILL -- Mrs. Marie Moss Ware, 60, of Camp Hill died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at Bethany House in Auburn.

Funeral services were scheduled Monday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. CDT at Beulah Baptist Church No. 2 in Camp Hill with the Rev. Jerry Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the Brummit Cemetery in Camp Hill.

Mrs. Ware is survived by her husband, James F. Ware of Camp Hill; one son, Ramon Ware of Modesto, Calif.; one daughter, Tonia (Sheldon) Turner of High Point, N.C.; her father, John (Ann) Moss of Dadeville; three sisters, Sarah (Samuel) Johnson of Phenix City, LaVon (James) Jennings of Washington, D.C., and Sue Moss of Montgomery; one Brother, Eddie (Grace) Moss of San Diego, Calif. ; three grandchildren, Desiree Porter, Simone Ware and Andre Ware, all of Modesto,; and a host of nieces, nephews and many more relatives and friends.

Born and reared in the New Adka community, Mrs. Ware lived in Camp Hill. She worked as a teacher/supervisor/bookkeeper with the Head Start Program, as an administrative assistant/bookkeeper at Lyman Ward military Academy, as a bookkeeper for the city of Camp Hill and as an office supervisor for Auburn Day Care Center in Auburn. Mrs. Ware was a member of Beulah Baptist Church No. 2 where she served in many areas such as singing in the choir and making programs.

MR. WILKINS

PINE MOUNTAIN -- Mr. Ernest Wilkins, 72, of Pine Mountain died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at Hospice LaGrange.

Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at Union Baptist Church at Jones Cross Roads in Pine Mountain with the Rev. John B. Adams officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Wilkins is survived by his wife, Claudette Wilkins of Pine Mountain; two daughters, Josette (Mike) Brown of Woodbury, Ga., and Debra Green of Fortson, Ga.; one son, Carl (Jan) Fletcher of Macon, Ga.; one sister, Gertrude Rouch of Marysville, Ohio; one brother, Kenneth Wilkins of Cable, Ohio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Born in Champaign County, Ohio on June 3, 1932, Mr. Wilkins was the son of the late Nila Jones Wilkins and the late Walter Leslie Wilkins. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. Mr. Wilkins was retired from Callaway Gardens where he served as the manager of the Skeet and Trap Range, shooting instructor and consultant. He served in the U.S. Army during the 1950s. Mr. Wilkins was an honorary Kentucky Colonel and was a life member of the National Skeet Shooting Association and the Hall of Fame of the Georgia Skeet Shooting Association. He was a member of the military Marksman Association.

The family will receive friends at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point Monday, Aug. 9 from 7 until 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Union Baptist Church, Shirley McKeen, 2303 O'Neal Road, West Point, 31833.

MR. WOOD

VALLEY -- Mr. James Robert Wood Sr., 77, of Valley died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 10 at Lanett First Baptist Church at 11 a.m with Dr. Hugh Richardson officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, Amy Hadaway Wood; six children, Janet (Reese) McKinney of Coden, Ala., Gloria (Billy) Mitchum of Moss Point, Miss.; Ellen (Robert) McClure of Hoover, Ala., Jim (Julie) Wood of Lanett, Sally (Keith) Chandler of Lanett and Bobby (Debbie) Wood of Valley; two sisters, Gladys (O.C.) Adamson of Lanett and Thelma Smith of Tallapoosa, Ga.; two brothers, Fred (Sue) Wood of Conyers, Ga., and Roger (Doris) Wood of Arlington, Texas; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Born Nov. 2, 1926 in Shannon, Ga., Mr. Wood was the son of the late Vera Walton Wood and John Mack Wood. He was a loving husband and father. Mr. Wood was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in pharmacy. Mr. Wood was a very active member of the Lanett First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, was a very active church worker and was a member of the Jolly Seniors group. He had been employed with several of the drug stores in the area.

He loved cooking and doing things for others. Mr. Wood will always be remembered for his dressing and chocolate cakes.

Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his grandchildren, Casey and Brian McConnell and Jessica Wood.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Lanett First Baptist Church in his memory.

The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 9 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

MR. BARRINGTON

BEULAH -- Mr. Forrest "Bud" Barrington, 88, of Beulah died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tuskegee.

Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Jim Dykes officiating. Burial will follow in Beulah Cemetery.

Mr. Barrington is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Charles) Reaves of Auburn; two sons, John "Sammy" (Jerry) Barrington of Tallassee, Ala. and Ferrell (Dawn) Barrington of Beulah.

Born June 4, 1916 in Beulah, Mr. Barrington was the son of the late Jenny Yarbrough Barrington and Milton Forrest Barrington. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Mr. Barrington was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. He had retired from WestPoint Pepperell's Riverdale Mill after 48 years of service with the company. In addition, he farmed and raised cattle all of his life. Mr. Barrington was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Rochelle Peacock Barrington.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 6 from 7 until 9 p.m. EDT at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.
