MRS. KOLODIN

DULUTH, Ga. -- Mrs. Margaret Texa Stark-Kolodin, 83, of Duluth died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

A graveside service is scheduled for Wednesday, March 31 at 2 p.m. (EST) at Shawmut Cemetery with the Revs. Jack Zimmer and Jerome King officiating.

Mrs. Kolodin is survived by one son, James E. (Cherry Spencer) Stark of Kennesaw, Ga.; two grandsons, David Stark of New York, N.Y., and Thomas Stark of Duluth; one sister, Virginia Wallace of Shawmut; two step-grandchildren, Christian Spencer and Todd (Cindy) Spencer, both of Kennesaw; and several nieces and nephews.

Born June 15, 1920 in Langdale, Mrs. Kolodin was a hard working, hard nosed, determined individual. She was a caring provider for all in need. She was an avid gardener and loved her dog Michelle. A retired nurse, Mrs. Kolodin continued to teach the art of caregiving to those who looked after her. She was a member of the Baptist faith, and the Nursing Association of America. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Kolodin.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 31 from 1 until 2 p.m. (CST) at the Shawmut Cemetery.

MR. TANKERSLEY

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Mr. Billy Frank Tankersley, 71, of LaGrange died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., following a brief illness.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, April 1 at 4 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Chapel located at 1010 Mooty Bridge Road in LaGrange with the Rev. Charles Chapman officiating. Graveside services will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens on Mooty Bridge Road.

Mr. Tankersley is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jo Tankersley; two sons, Eddie (Sherry) Tankersley and Terry N. (Martha) Tankersley, both of LaGrange; one step-daughter, Gail (Richard) Royster of Langdale; one step-son, Ricky (Vickie) Pratt of Dadeville, Ala.; six grandchildren, Cory Tankersley, Clint Tankersley, Kathryn Tankersley, Joey Tankersley, Bethany Tankersley and Jill Tankersley, all of LaGrange; four step-grandchildren, Dana Oliver of Valley, Tina Craig of Roanoke, Ala., and Josh Pratt and Natasha Pratt, both of Dadeville; three sisters, Betty (Doug) Chamlee of Winter Haven, Fla., Nancy (David) Short of Valley, and Linda (Frank) Humber of Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Lester Tankersley of Opelika, Ala., and Larry (Tinie) Tankersley of Lanett; and several nieces and nephews.

Born Mary 15, 1932 in Chambers County, Mr. Tankersley lived in LaGrange most of his life. He was retired from Opelika Manufacturing Company and MotorMax. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Mr. Tankersley was a well-known and beloved member of his community who will be strongly missed by all his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Alice, and his brother, George. He was the son of the late William Joseph Tankersley and Myrtice Bell Crowder of Langdale.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 31 from 6 until 9 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in LaGrange.

MRS. COX

MACON, Ga. -- Mrs. Cathryne Word Cox, 82, of Plantation Suites, Georgia Baptist Village, died Friday, March 26, 2004.

Memorial services are scheduled for Friday, April 2 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hart's Mortuary in Macon with Dr. Bob Setzer, the Rev. Ben Taylor and Pastor Tammy Glover officiating.

Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ashley P. Cox Jr. of Macon; three sons, Ashley P. Cox III of Durham, N.C., Todd Word Cox of Tahlequah, Okla., and John Mark Cox of Sandersville, Ga.; and two granddaughters, Kristin Nicole Cox and Sara Ashley Cox, both of Durham.

Mrs. Cox was a member of First Baptist Church where she served as minister of education from 1949-1954. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Word Jones of Valley, and her brother, Guy Milligan Word of LaGrange. She was the daughter of the late Henry Grady Word and Edna Dura Earnest Word.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the First Baptist Church Renovation Fund, 511 High Place, Macon, Ga., 31201.

The family will greet friends Friday, April 2 from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the memorial service at Hart's Mortuary.

MRS. PETTIE

WEST POINT -- Mrs. Virgie Mai Pettie, 95, of West Point the last nine years, formerly of Montgomery, Ala., died Friday, March 26, 2004 at Beverly Health Care in Lanett.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 31 at 4 p.m. (EST) at Leak-Memory Chapel in Montgomery with the Rev. Fred Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Pettie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Joe McElvy; three grandchildren, Dutch (Thea) McElvy and Joe (Whitney) McElvy, both of Lanett, and Cissy (Don) Bayles of Atlanta, Ga.; six great-grandchildren, Jason, Joseph, D.J., Erin and Meg McElvy, all of Lanett, and Davis Bayles of Atlanta; dear friend and caregiver of nine years, Henrietta Howell of Lanett; and one sister-in-law, Willie Pettie of McWilliams, Ala.

Mrs. Pettie was a retired teacher of 35 years. She was an active member of Dalraida Methodist Church in Montgomery where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Douglas Pettie.

OPELIKA, Ala. -- Mr. Joe Terrell (Joey) Hester Jr., 18, of Opelika died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. (EST) at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Lanett. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Hester is survived by his parents, Kim and Kebo Hadaway of Opelika; one sister, Jennifer Hester of Opelika; his grandparents, Harvey and Janice Smith and Rolyn and Shelia Hadaway; his uncles, David (DeDe) Hadaway, Mickey Hadaway, Joshua Hill and Lucas Johns; his aunts, Angela (C.W.) Guess, Donna Till, Teletha Mills, Vada Johns and Wilma Greenway; and special friends Kylie and Jacob Johns.

The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 13 from 6 until 8 p.m. (EST) at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lanett.

MR. MORGAN

WEST POINT -- Mr. John Thomas Morgan Jr., 93, of West Point died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 .

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of West Point with the Rev. Joe Watson officiating.

Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lavinia Buckner Morgan; his nieces, Bonnie Jean Morgan Meredith (Gil) of Dawsonville, Ga., Lachlan McIntosh Morgan Lambert (Gerald) of Atlanta, Ga., Charlotte Buckner Bird (Tom) of Austin, Texas, Karen Buckner Fredenburg (Pete) of Bolton, Texas, Bettye Buckner Bryant (Gary) of Houston, Texas, Cindy Buckner Gill (the Rev. Philip) of Argyle, Texas, and Jan Buckner Anderson (Glen) of Birmingham, Ala.; his nephews, Ben F. Buckner III of Dublin, Ohio, Edward Buckner (Diane) of Smyrna, Ga., and Major Tom Morgan Buckner (Laura) of the U.S. Air Force; one great-nephew, Brinson Gilbert Meredith (Pagent) of Atlanta; one great-niece, Morgan Meredith Tjepkema (Wesley) of Atlanta; one great-great-nephew, and four great-great-nieces; special friends, Otis Higgins (Mary Ann) of West Point, and Bruce Mayer (Anne) of Copper Canyon, Texas, who was an officer on the amphibious ship, LCJ (L) 977 in World War II that Mr. Morgan commanded.

Born Oct. 24, 1910 in LaGrange, Mr. Morgan was educated in the public schools of LaGrange and graduated from West Point High School in 1930. He graduated from Emory University of Atlanta in 1934, with a degree in political economy and engineering.

Mr. Morgan joined the U.S. Navy in August 1943, and after five-and-a-half months training, was given command of the amphibious ship LC(L) 977, serving in the Pacific Area.

He was a Troup County representative in the Georgia Legislature 1947-1948. He served as mayor of West Point 1956-1965, was vice president of the Georgia Municipal Association and chairman of the National Committee on Waterways.

Mr. Morgan was a member of First United Methodist Church in West Point where he had been active in the Scout Troop, was licensed as a local preacher (while serving in South Georgia), taught Sunday school and was the active LaGrange District Lay Leader for some 20 years. He was an honorary member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in West Point.

Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his only brother, Joseph Warner Morgan. He was the son of the late John Thomas Morgan Sr. and Bula Edna Warner Morgan.

The family respectfully declines the gift of flowers and asks that contributions be made to First United Methodist Church of West Point, or to the Boy Scouts of America.

The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 13 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the residence.

LANETT -- Mrs. Mary Ellen Brown, 83, of Lanett died Wednesday morning, Feb. 11, 2004 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. John Dye officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Stanley) Lewis of Lanett; one son, Jerry (Deborah) Brown of Tampa, Fla.; four sisters, Nellie (Clifford) Lynn, Faye (Gene) Yarbrough and Glenella (Charles) Hall, all of Valley, and Sara Moore of LaGrange; three brothers, Charlie (Vondell) Fetner of Ashland, Ala., George Fetner of Valley and Marvin (Dottie) Fetner of Beulah; seven grandchildren, Darren Lewis, Damen Lewis, Jerome Brown, Daniel Brown, Rick Brown, Robin Brown and Susan Brown; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Born March 1, 1920 in Clay County, Ala., Mrs. Brown was a retired employee of WestPoint Stevens Fairfax Mill. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Avery Brown. She was the daughter of the late Effie Amerson Fetner and Frank Fetner.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association in her memory.

LAGRANGE -- Mrs. Frances S. Myhand, 90, loving mother and devoted friend and neighbor of Pine Mountain, Ga., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at Hospice LaGrange.

Graveside services are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. in the Pine Mountain City Cemetery with Dr. Mabry Collins officiating.

Mrs. Myhand is survived by one son, Jim (Sue Ellen) Myhand of Pine Mountain; one daughter, Ann M. (J.T.) Cox of Fayetteville, Ga.; one nephew who grew up in her home, Stephen Joseph (Audrey) Head; three grandchildren, Carol Wells of Fayetteville, Doug H. and Julie Cox of Raleigh, N.C., and Todd and Jan C. Franks of Newnan, Ga.; five great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Katie Franks of Newnan, and Sarah, Caroline and John Cox of Raleigh; a large and loving family of nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Born Feb. 14, 1913, Mrs. Myhand lived most of her life in Harris County where she enjoyed baking and sewing for friends and family after her retirement from International Playtex Mfg. Co. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. Mrs. Myhand was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Myhand. She was the daughter of the late John Henry and Florence Hearn Satterwhite.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hospice LaGrange, 1510 Vernon Road, LaGrange, Ga., 30240.

LANETT -- Mr. William E. Yates Sr., 78, of Lanett died Monday morning, Feb. 9, 2004 at his residence.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with Pastor Jim Luttrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Fredonia Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Yates is survived by his wife, Rudine Thompson Yates; his son, Bill (Julie) Yates of Auburn, Ala.; three daughters, Wanda (Johnny) Smith of Kodak, Tenn., Cindy (Bryan) Bentley of Cedartown, Ga., and Christy Yates of St. Augustine, Fla.; one brother, Arthur M. Yates of Mobile, Ala.; one sister, Velma Shirey of Valley; three granddaughters, Karen (Troy) Kelley of Sevierville, Tenn., Crystal (William) Lashley of Huntingdon, Tenn., and Katherine Bentley of Cedartown; and one great-grandson, William Jonah Kelley of Sevierville.

Born Nov. 9, 1925 in Tallassee, Ala., Mr. Yates loved his family very much and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was the former owner and operator of the Yates Grocery Store in the Lakeview Community. Mr. Yates was a member of Community Chapel Church of God in Lanett. He was the son of the late Maud Fortune Yates and Jesse Leonard Yates.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice in his memory.

VALLEY -- Mr. William T. "Spot" Adcock, 83, of Valley died Monday evening, Feb. 9, 2004 at Beverly Health Care in Lanett.

Graveside services are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. at Fairfax Cemetery with the Rev. Stan Brumbeloe officiating.

Mr. Adcock is survived by one daughter, Trula Harrison of Valley; one son, Donald Adcock of Valley; one sister, Margie Green of Huguley; one grandchild, Sheryl McGinnis of Valley; and two great-grandchildren, Macabe McGinnis and McKeyan McGinnis, both of Valley.

Born May 15, 1920 in Randolph County, Ala., Mr. Adcock had been a resident of the Valley area most of his life and was a retired employee of WestPoint Stevens Fairfax Mill with 49 years of service with the company.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.
