Hugh Fouchee DuVal III, 56, of Indialantic, Fla., died June 22, 2002. He graduated from Florida State University and received his master's degree from Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. He was a retired financial analyist.
He is survived by his daughter, Emily Halsey DuVal; son, Jeffrey Hugh DuVal; mother, Virginia Frost DuVal; sister, Suzanne Plotzke; and brother, David DuVal.
A memorial service will be July 27 at 10 a.m. at Montevallo Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Hammett presiding, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Carman A. "Bud" Gjesvold, 66, of Shelby died July 20, 2002. He was born Oct. 8, 1935, in Nome, N.D. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Frankie; sons, Michael (Patti) Gjesvold of Dayton, Ore., Richard Gjesvold of Astoria, Ore., and Randy (Iva) Gjesvold of Bremerton, Wash.; brothers, Wayne (Beverly) Gjesvold of Montgomery and Freeman Gjesvold of Castle Rock, Wash.; sister, Betty Mae Randby of Longview, Wash.; three grandsons; three granddaughters, two great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
JOHN ELLA JOSEPH

John Ella Joseph, 81, of Columbiana died July 18, 2002. She was born July 3, 1921, in Shelby County. She was a member of Lester's Chapel United Methodist Church, a writer, a journal keeper and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Waymon Bentley.
She is survived by her daughters, Glenda (Mac) Stinson, Gail Owen and Nina (Kenny) McCord; sons, Douglas (Kathy) Joseph and Anthony (Carolyn) Joseph; brother, Leroy Bentley; sister, Martha Ferguson; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and other family and friends.
Service was July 20 at Lester's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marvin McCormick and Monsignor Richard Saad presiding. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery, Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lester's Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Martha Ann Lewis, 67, of Calera died July 21, 2002. She was a retired hairdresser.
She is survived by her husband, Hansel Lewis; daughter, Wanda Denise Lewis of Montgomery; sons, Michael W. Lewis of Calera, Hansel Gregory Lewis of Orange Beach and Hugh D. Lewis of Calera; sister, Estelle Smith of Calera; brothers, Terrell Edwards of Coral Gables, Fla., and George Edwards of Montevallo; grandchildren, Brandy Michelle Lewis, Michael Houston Lewis, Amber LeAnn Lewis, Brandon Shane Lewis, Billy Boothe, Breezie Nicole Easterling and Shea Anthony Easterling; and great-grandchildren, Tiffany Zaramba and Preston Wayne Zaramba.
Service was July 23 at Rockco's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darryl Nichols presiding. Burial was at Shelby Memory Gardens, Rockco's Funeral Home directing.

Max E. Martin, 72, of Bessemer died July 14, 2002. He was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Shelby County.
He is survived by his sister, Christine Winkleback of Watonga, Okla., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside service was July 19 at Shelby Memory Gardens in Calera, Bolton Brown Service Funeral Home directing.
BILL R. POLK
Bill R. Polk, 60, of Leeds died July 14, 2002. He was born in Columbus, Miss. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood. He received his bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University and a master's degree from UAB. He was employed by SONAT for more than 29 years, holding positions from assistant stores auditor to general accounting manager. He was the former treasurer of Eternal Word Television Network. He was a member of the Institute of Management Accountants, Vulcan chapter; Alabama Genealogy Society; Birmingham Genealogy Society; Lamar County Genealogy Society; and the Computer-Aided Genealogy Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Polk, and his brother, Dewey Elton Polk.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Gallon Polk; sons, Andrew Gallon Polk and wife, Tonya, of Leeds and Jason William Polk and wife, Heather, of Mobile; grandsons, Ray Gallon Polk of Leeds and Zachary Alexander Polk of Mobile; brother, Erby Polk of Pleasant Grove; and sister, Doris Johnson of Centreville.
Service was July 17 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Graveside service was at Forest Crest Cemetery in Irondale, Kilgroe Funeral Home directing.
