Herbert Glenn Stephens

Herbert Glenn Stephens, 60, long-time community leader and executive director of Sylacauga Housing Authority, died Saturday.
Stephens maintained residences in both Boaz and Sylacauga. He died at Baptist Montclair Hospital in Birmingham.

Stephens had been executive director of the Sylacauga Housing Authority for a number of years. He took over when another long-time executive director, Virginia West, retired. He also served as executive director of Dublin Housing Authority in Dublin, Ga. For 25 years prior, he was executive director of the Albertville Housing Authority.

He was actively involved in numerous civic affairs such as Sand Mountain Civitan Club, Volunteer Fire Department and Albertville Band Boosters.

In Sylacauga, he was involved with the United Way, serving as its campaign chairman several years ago. He was also active in the Rotary Club and was instrumental in helping Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement get started more than five years ago.

He was a charter member and past president of the Alabama Public Housing Authority. He received awards throughout his life, including one of the Top Ten Citizens of Sylacauga, the Governor's Award for Cleanliness and Beautification, Sylacauga Beautification Council Big C Award and was awarded "High Performer" status for Sylacauga Housing Authority by the Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Margaret Morton, executive director of SAFE, said Stephens' death is a tremendous loss to the Sylacauga Housing Authority and to the community.

"He contributed so much to people on an individual basis and on the community level," she said.

Morton recalled Stephens telling her once his greatest joy in life was helping others.

"He did that. Sylacauga has lost a wonderful friend," she said.

Sylacauga Mayor Bruce Carr said Stephens participated in things in the community that no one knew about.

"Glenn will be missed. He was such a professional and gave everyone the utmost respect. I remember when he took over the Housing Authority with the retirement of Miss West. He stepped right in and moved the Housing Authority forward," Carr said.

The mayor said it will be hard to replace Stephens.

"He had it so under control. Our prayers go out to his family. He was such a vibrant person and always in a good mood," Carr said.

Council President Doug Murphree said Stephens had made so many improvements in public living in Sylacauga.

"This city is going to miss him. He did a lot for SAFE and for public housing," he said.

Harold Brooks, director of the Sylacauga Boys Club, spoke of how Stephens always put forth a big effort for anything concerning his community.

"He was a great guy. He chaired United Way and was a big supporter and great friend to the Boys Club. Thanks to him, the Boys Club is participating in a summer food program through the Housing Authority providing lunches to 20 of our boys," Brooks said.

Jesse Cleveland worked with Stephens in United Way and with SAFE.

"In my opinion he was one of the driving forces who helped us achieve what we did with SAFE. He provided us with so many in-kind services and offered to help us beyond the call of duty. He did things he didn't have to do. Words can't express what he has done for Sylacauga and so many in the community," Cleveland said.

Stephens is survived by his wife of 40 years, Martha Sue Stephens; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Michelle Stephens; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Martin Gonzalez; six grandchildren; one brother, Terry Stephens; and two sisters, Jane Brand and Sarah Gray.
