Bernice Weaver Kirk

Mrs. Bernice Weaver Kirk, age 88, a resident of De Queen, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009, in Crystal Falls Nursing Center, De Queen.

She was born to Henry Franklin “Buster” and Birdie Smithson Weaver at Shinewell, Oklahoma, on September 9, 1921. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of De Queen, and a former member of the Horatio First Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, and was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, flowers, gardening, and walking.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, her brothers, Lee and Henry Weaver, her sisters, Orlena Sargent, and Nettie Goad, and 1997, her husband of over 60 years, France Edward Kirk.

She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Jermon and Billy Garrison of Tulsa, Okla., Sharon and Bill Tate of Snowflake, Arizona, Donna and Eddie Russell of Ashdown, Arkansas, and Dana and Earl Battiest of De Queen, fifteen grandchildren, Laurie Allen, Sheri Peter, Donald Garrison, Billy Garrison, Angela Creedon, Tony Tate, Bradley Tate, Chris DeVasier, Tommy DeVasier, and Denise DeVasier, Kirk Hodges, Zac Battiest, Tiffanty Pritchard, Cori Horras, and Brittany Hill, eighteen great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Mabel Thomas of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends, Yvonne Mulina, Velma Gillispie, and JoAnn Jarrell.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Bernice Kirk are entrusted to Chandler Funeral Home and will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM. in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Hebert and grandson-in-law, Rev. Mike Peter officiating. Burial will follow in the Denison Cemetery, Idabel, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Friday, October 23rd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Daniel Lynn Barnett, II

Daniel Lynn Barnett, II, age 29, a resident of Dierks, died Monday, October 19, 2009 in New Hope, Arkansas.

He was born February 27, 1980 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was a mechanic. Daniel was loved by his friends and was a loving father.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Anita K. Roberts; one brother, Ronny D. Pender and his grandmother, Ernestine Pate.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Broyles Barnett of Dierks; his children, Melonie, Daniel III, Zoe and Myah; his father, Daniel Barnett I of Texarkana, Arkansas; his grandparents, Arthur and Josie Eudy of Dierks and Gerald Roberts of Washington.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 24, 2009 in the Dierks Cemetery with Rev. J.W. Gilbert officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, October 23rd at the funeral home in Dierks.

Fred Patrick Barnette

Fred Patrick Barnette, age 50, a resident of Lockesburg, died Sunday, October 11, 2009 at his home.

He was born January 19, 1959 in Homer, Louisiana. He was a certified tractor mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Taylor Barnette.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Sue Grubbs Barnette of Lockesburg; two sons, Trent William Barnette of De Queen and Shane Patrick Barnette of Berryville, Arkansas; his mother and step-father, Billye Marie and Kirk Prince of Shreveport, Louisiana; his sister, Becky Jo Wesson of Florida; three grandchildren, J’lee and Jaida Barnette of De Queen, and Xander Wright of Berryville; two nieces, Cara Beth Kemp of Florida and Erin Taylor Wagner of Horatio; one nephew, Jacob Seth Taylor of De Queen and a number of aunts and cousins.

Memorial Services for Mr. Barnette will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2009 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wallace Wooten officiating

Ricky Don Grigsby

Ricky Don Grigsby, 26, joined his family in heaven July 2009. Ricky was born January 7, 1983 to Tony Grant Grigsby Jr. and LaNora Christine Swindler in De Queen, Arkansas. Ricky lived and attended school in Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. He later received his GED. Ricky worked for Tyson Chicken in Arkansas and later moved to Marlow to work for Bronco Drilling Company. He also hauled hay for Theo Lamb. Ricky enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, fishing and hunting, reading. He also enjoyed football and basketball games. He loved being with his family and playing with his daughter, whom he loved dearly. Ricky attended Gillham Baptist Church in Gillham, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his uncles, Danny and Ricky Swindler, Mark Grigsby, his aunt, LaDon Jenkins, his grandfather, Tony Grigsby, Sr., his great-grandparents, TR “Bud” and Nora Swindler, WW (Thomas) and Ida Lou Cook, Bert Weatherly, Gladys Rutledge, F.L. and Edith Grigsby, George and Verna Carter, his cousin, Raymond Rightmire, and step-uncle, Brian Nunley.

His survivors include: Daughter, Breonna Renae (Cecil) Grigsby of Gillham, AR; Mother, LaNora Christine Lee and step-father Robert of Mena, AR; Father, Tony Grant Grigsby of Marlow, OK, 4 Brothers: Daniel Stover and wife Amy of Mena, AR, Richard Stover and wife Casie stationed in Germany, Tony Grigsby, III and wife Danita of Marlow, OK, Jesse Grigsby of Marlow, OK, 2 Step-brothers: Robert Lee, Jr and wife of CA, Van Lee of De Queen, AR, Step-sister, Angie Scott of Texarkana, AR; Grandfather, Clifford Swindler, 3 Nephews: Hunter Cox, Thomas Stover, Alex Grigsby;3 Nieces: Daton, Montana, Dusty Grigsby;3 Step-nephews: Neithan Lee, Cody and Christopher Scott;3 Step-nieces: Kinley, Rachel and Baby Girl Lee, Grandparents, Fern and Randy Nunley of Comanche, OK, Berdine and Tom Carter of Marlow, Diane Grigsby of MO, 4 Uncles: Billy Gillespie of Duncan, OK, Eddy Grigsby of Lubbock, TX, Tommy Carter and wife Michelle of Marlow, OK, Evan Carter and wife Jeannie of Marlow, OK, 2Aunts: Ginger Cole of Marlow, OK and Lisa Swindler of California.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday, October 20, 2009 in the Eastside Baptist Church at Marlow, OK with Rev. Toby Walker officiating. Burial will be at 2:00pm, Wednesday, October 21, 2009 in the Overturf Cemetery in Gillham, Arkansas with Rev. Steven Chenoweth officiating.

The family will be at the Wilkerson Family Center at 11:00 on Wednesday before the service.

Joe Sye Chandler

Mr. Joe Sye Chandler, age 82, a resident of De Queen, died Saturday, October 10, 2009 in Wadley Health System, Texarkana.
He was born to Josh B. and Rosetta Lingo Chandler at Horatio, Arkansas, on April 17, 1927.

He was a retired engineer for the Weyerhaueser D&E.T.O.&E. Railroad with 30 years service. He was a member of the Chapel Hill Baptist Church, and enjoyed gardening, deer hunting, and feeding birds, squirrels, and cats.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Will, Roy, Clarence, and Arthur Chandler, and his sisters, Leddie Yandell, and Lyda Ramsey.

He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Bonnie Emerson Chandler of De Queen, three sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Edward and Linda Chandler; Dennis and Patti Chandler ; and Gaylon and Teresa Chandler all of De Queen, a sister, Lillie Emerson of De Queen; eight grandchildren, Terry and his wife, Tammy Chandler of Benton, Arkansas, Melissa and her husband, Marvin Threet, Jr. of Horatio, Britney and her husband, Jeremy Icenhower of De Queen, Nicky, and his wife, Jessica Chandler of Horatio, Natosha, and her Husband, Bryan Wilson of New Boston, Texas, Chris and his wife, Tracey Chandler of Batesville, Ark., Shasta Chandler and Jonathan Chandler both of De Queen, fourteen great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Joe Chandler are entrusted to Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen, And will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 13th in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel With Bro. Keith Smith and Bro. Shane Haarmeyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Monday, October 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Nancy H."Granny" Young

Graveside services honoring the life of Nancy H. "Granny" Young, 87, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Redmen Cemetery, De Queen, AR. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home with a Vigil service following at 7:00 p.m.

Nancy was born May 16, 1922 in DeQueen, AR to James M. Howell, Sr. and Mary Gertrude Foley Howell and passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2009. She graduated from DeQueen High School and married David Young on February 22, 1940. They moved to Shreveport, LA in 1949 with three young children for David to work on the KCS Railroad. She became a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and worked on various fundraisers to build St. Theresa Catholic School. She was a former president of the PTA, Den Mother to her sons Boy Scout Troop, and Circle 7. An LPN for over 25 years, she also served as president of District IV of Louisiana Practical Nurse's Association and worked tirelessly to acquire a raise in their hourly wage. Nancy was president of the Ladies League of The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. For the last forty years, she has been a devoted member of St. John Berchmans Cathedral, Circle 5 for which she was the current Social Chairman, and member of the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Bible Study Group.

Her husband of 57 years, David Adolphus Young, Sr., beloved son, David Adolphus Young, Jr., infant son, Martin Francis Young, and daughter, Mary Elizabeth Young, preceded Nancy in death. She will be dearly missed by her sons, Joseph H. Young of Shreveport, LA and Stephen Patrick Young of Greenville, SC; daughters, Judith Elaine Ahearn, Cathy Ann Newell and Nancy Jane(y) Pettiette and husband, Larry all of Shreveport, LA; grandchildren, Christine Ahearn Miller and husband, Bob, Laura Ahearn Morales and husband, Angel, David Lee Young, Emily Young Davis and spouse, Chris, Joey, Patrick, and Brian Young, Trey Newell and spouse, Britney, Clay Newell, Michael Anne, Pete, Rose, and David Adolphus Pettiette. Great-grandchildren, Ande and Megan Miller, Chad and Jake Morales, Andrew Davis, and Grace Newell; nieces, Cindy Howell, Linda Henry, Jeannie DeWitt, Betty Gail Niemann. Former daughter-in-law and spouse, Jenny and Bill Norwood and other nephews and nieces.

Granny was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals of both quality and quantity. She shared her home-baked goods with family and friends and had a natural affection for all animals. She was a kind and gentle Southern lady who shared what she had, even when not plentiful.

Honoring Granny as pallbearers will be her grandsons. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of St. John Berchmans Bible Study Group and Circle 5. A special thanks is extended to The Rev. Peter Mangum, son-in-law, Larry Pettiette, and caregivers at Lifecare Hospital on Linwood. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date to commemorate the extraordinary life of Nancy.

Timothy Ray Gillispie

Mr. Timothy Ray Gillispie, age 54, a resident of De Queen, and former resident of Nashville, Ark., died Tuesday, October 6th at his home.
He was born to Carl A. and Velma Adkins Gillispie at Huntington, West Virginia, on December 17, 1954. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas, and served in the military with the U. S. Army. He was owner/operator of the Video World in Nashville, for many years, as well as an accountant. He was a Baptist and enjoyed race cars, and wood working.

He was preceded in death by his father, and his grandparents, Thomas R. and Gertrude Adkins of Huntington, West Virginia.

He is survived by his mother, Velma Gillispie of De Queen, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Alma Jean and Robert Nichols of Clarksville, Tenn., and Carla Sue and Zahir Kamruddin of De Queen, He is also survived by his nephews, Steven White and Dr. R. Jeremy Nichols, his nieces, Kimberly Nichols, Rehana Jones, Kara Kamruddin, and Zara Kamruddin; three great-nieces, Ella White, Londyn Jones, and Ainsley Nichols.

Funeral Services for Tim Gillispie are entrusted to Chandler Funeral Home, and will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 10th in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles Hebert officiating. Burial will follow in Redmen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Friday, October 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Floyd Otto “Pete” Peterson

Mr. Floyd Otto “Pete” Peterson, age 83, a resident of De Queen, died Thursday, October 08, 2009 in De Queen

He was born to William and Red Graham Peterson, at Idaho Falls, Idaho, on November 11, 1925. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Navy, was a building contractor in California, and was retired owner of Peterson Midway, which is now C&W Bait Shop. He was a member of the De Queen Church of Christ and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and fellowships.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Lane and Lee Peterson.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Idell Ashley Peterson of De Queen, three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Gary Mosslander of Taft, California, Lorrian Peterson of De Queen, and Barbara Jean and Kurt Kozielski of Clovis, California, Six grandchildren, Gene, J. R., Robin, Charie, Stacey, and Kendra, sixteen great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Pete Peterson are entrusted to Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen, and will be held at 4:00 p.m., Monday, October 12, 2009 in the Crosstrails Cemetery, De Queen, with Charles F. Krudwig and Van Ledbetter, minister officiating. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Sunday, October 11th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m

Richard Paul Bennett

Mr. Richard Paul Bennett, age 85, a resident of De Queen, and former resident of Mansfield, Louisiana, died Wednesday, October 7, 2009 in De Queen.

He was born to David and Verda Dark Bennett at Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a former Eagle Scout, a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Navy, and was a retired parts manager for Harris Ford in Mansfield, La. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of De Queen, and was active in the Local AARP, as well as the De Queen Alumni School Reunion Committee. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Earlyne McVay Bennett of De Queen, three daughters, Kathie Chan of Houston, Texas, Edie Wright of De Queen, and Paula Sanca of Mansfield, La., six grandchildren, Joe Fleischer, Amanda Fairchild, Erin Marini, and Joshua Chan, Stephanie Johnson, Blake Sanca, Ten great-grandchildren, Elliana Grace Fairchild, Emma Kate Marini, Jordan B. Fleischer, Hayley Carolyn Fleischer, Rachael Amanda Fleischer, Kennedi Lynn Broussard, Harley Dean Johnson, Madyson J. Johnson, Lyza Marie Sanca, and Kyle Anton Sanca.

Funeral services for Mr. Paul Bennett will be held in the Chapel of Chandler Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 9th in the Redmen Cemetery with Rev. Grant Groves officiating.
