Wilma Lou Chapman Mills

Mrs. Wilma Lou Chapman Mills, age 65, a resident of De Queen, died Thursday, December 31, 2009 at her home.
She was born July 19, 1944, at Los Angeles, Calif. She was an employee of Walmart, where she was a cashier. She attended the Old Union Missionary Baptist Church, Lockesburg, and enjoyed bingo, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walt and Frances Chapman, a sister, Pat Seitz, a son-in-law, Steve Young, and in 2006, her husband, Leonard Mills.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Lori Young of Fallbrook, California, and Lisa and Doyle Adcock of De Queen, six grandchildren, Wade and Sabrina Young of California, Michael and Jeremy Adcock of De Queen, Alexandra and Victoria Clayton of De Queen, three great-grandchildren, Natalee, Aubreigh, and Mallory, her siblings, Steve Marsh, Tinker Everly, Lois Zinkhan, and Diana Evans all of Oregon.

Funeral Services for Wilma Mills are entrusted to Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen, and will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 4, 2010 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Donnie Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Ida Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, January 3rd.

Pallbearers are: Stan Topor, Scotty Mills, Jimmy Mills, Timmy Mills, Steve Snider, and Carlos Arce, Honorary Pallbearer, Troy David Mills.

Hubert W. Acklen

Hubert W. Acklen, age 72 of Nashville, Arkansas, passed away, Monday, December 21, 2009 in Nashville. He was born July 4, 1937 in Black Oak, Arkansas to the late William Bud and Mattie Jane Holder Acklen.

He was a retired engineer with D&ETO&E Railroad. Mr. Acklen loved to ride horses, loved deer hunting, but best of all he loved telling stories. Some true, some questionable. He had seen and done a lot in his life and he loved sharing it with others.

Mr. Acklen was a Baptist. Preceding him in death, 1-son, 1-daughter, 2 –sisters and 3- Brothers Survivors include; 4 daughters, Melissa Hill of Nashville, Kimberly Mitchell of Horatio, Arkansas, Charee Acklen of Kansas, and Paula Acklen of Cambridge, Kansas. 1 son, Kevin Acklen of Texarkana, Texas 1 Brother, James Acklen of Broken Bow, Ok. 6 Sisters, Verna Dowd of De Queen, Arkansas, Margie Spoon of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Martha Zukos of Kissimmee, Florida, Emma Perez of Chicago, Il., Mary Alice Chamberlin of Mims, Florida and Barbara Marcantel of Louisiana 10 Grandchildren And a host of other family and friends to numerous to name.

Services will be Wednesday, December 22, 2009 at 2 pm. at Nashville Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Hill officiating. Burial will follow in County Line Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 to 8 pm.

Linda Gail Tobin Downs

Linda Gail Tobin Downs, age 69, a resident of De Queen, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 in De Queen.

She was born January 30, 1940 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She was a Registered Nurse, co-owner of Home Entertainment, a former employee of Handi Mart and a Catholic.

Mrs. Downs was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Gwendolyn Tobin; her husband, Paul A. Downs, Jr., and one brother, Leroy Tobin.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Paul Downs III and Michelle of McKinney, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Gwen and Johnny Chambers of De Queen; one brother and sister-in-law, Surry and Valerie Tobin of Hot Springs; five grandchildren, Paul Downs IV, Amber Smith, Tyler Smith, Hayden Lee and Taylor Lee and one nephew, Kyle Tobin of Hot Springs.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. Downs will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 31, 2009 in the Redmen Cemetery with Father Chet Artysiewicz officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

Reese Dee Manasco

Mr. Reese Dee Manasco, age 83, a resident of Dierks, Arkansas died Monday, December 28, 2009, in the Dierks Health and Rehab Center.

He was born December 24, 1926, in Umpire, Arkansas. He was a retired millwright for Weyerhaeuser, an Army veteran, and a member of the Holly Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Manasco was preceded in death by his parents, James Polk and Tressie Hunter Manasco and ten brothers and sisters.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Jan Manasco of Dierks; two daughters and a son-in-law, Derenda and Rick Butler of Hope, Arkansas and Joy Smith of Dierks; six grandchildren, Clark Manasco, Amber (David) Helms, Brandon Cogburn, Cassi (Jeffrey) Mounts, Lana (Brian) Halter and Devin (Chad) Robinson; seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Manasco will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2009, in the Bethel Cemetery in Umpire with David Helms officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 29th at the funeral home in Dierks.

Brizel "Ed" Overturf

Mr. Brizel Edkar "Ed" "Slim" Overturf, age 94, a resident of Gillham, Arkansas died Saturday, December 26, 2009 in the De Queen Medical Center.

Mr. Overturf was born August 2, 1915. He was a retired copper miner, a mechanic, a U.S Army veteran of WWII and a lifetime member of the VFW. He loved hunting, fishing, auctions and flea markets.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Mable Rose Overturf and Dorothy Russell Overturf; one son Edgar two grandchildren, B.J. and Josh; a step-daughter Sue; ten brothers and sisters and numerous friends, notably O.C. Guire of Gillham and Sonny Burke of Grannis.

He is survived by two sons and daughter -in-law, John and Mary Overturf of De Queen, AR. and James and Donna Overturf of Gillham; two step-daughters, Marsha Jones of Phoenix, AZ and Marlene Bright of Safford, AZ, a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a special friend Jack Jones of Grannis, AR.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Overturf will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009 in the Overturf Cemetery with Rev. Homer Frachiseur officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 29th at the funeral home.

Alberto Frausto Campos

Alberto Frausto Campos, age 33, a resident of De Queen, died Friday, December 25, 2009 in the Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.

He was born April 7, 1976 in Guanajuato, Mexico to Jose Frausto Castillo and Maria Refugio Campos de Frausto. He was a tree pruner for Umpire Forestry and a Catholic.

He is survived by a number of family members in Mexico and a number of friends in De Queen.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Howard Truman Turner

Howard Truman Turner, age 73, a resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, died Friday, December 25, 2009 at his home.

He was born Thursday, March 5, 1936 in Gillham, Arkansas. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served as 1st Airman in the U.S. Air Force. He was a respected Safety Consultant for thirty-five years and was a member of the St. Edmond Catholic Church in Lafayette.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pellie Leon Turner and the former Lillie Paralee Hankins.

Mr. Turner is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lila Slabaugh Turner of Lafayette; his daughter, Valerie LeBas and her husband, Paul also of Lafayette; four grandchildren, Lindsey LeBas, Jean Paul LeBas, Andre Luc LeBas and Emile Renee LeBas all of Lafayette; two brothers, Charles Turner and his wife Peggy and Gordon Turner, all of De Queen.

Catholic Services were held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 27, 2009 in the Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette with Rev. Father Timothy Richard officiating.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Turner will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 28, 2009 in the Valley Cemetery in Gillham, Arkansas, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

Herman Mack Brock

Mr. Herman Mack Brock, age 86, a resident of Dierks, Arkansas died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in the Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mr. Brock was born May 4, 1923 in Howard County, Arkansas. He was a logger and farmer; he was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during WWII and he was a member of the Holly Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Brock was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Myrtle Lemons Brock; three brothers Preston, Olin and Doyle Brock.

He is survived by his wife, Effie Lois Reed Brock of Dierks; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Ackley and Rodney of Nashville, Arkansas and Glenda Hogden and Nelson of Dierks; three brothers, Cletus, Gene and Bobby Brock all of Dierks; two sisters, Ivy Mae Miller of Minden, Louisiana and Mary Elliot of Hot Springs, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Stephania Ray, Susan House, Lisa Reid and Wayne Hogden; 9 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Brock will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 26, 2009 in the Holly Creek Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Wayne Reed and Bro. Glen Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Fellowship Cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, December 25th at the funeral home in Dierks.

Deneva Imogene Marsh

Deneva Imogene McCauley Marsh, age 91, of Wickes passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2009 in De Queen, Arkansas.

She was born June 8, 1918 in Umpire, Arkansas to the late Henry McCauley and the late Pearl Jackson McCauley. She was united in marriage December 20, 1938 to Clovis H. Marsh. Mrs. Marsh worked many years for Lane Poultry and as a foster grandparent for the Wickes Kindergarten for seven years.

She was a loving homemaker, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, and friend.

Survivors are:
Daughter: Christene Kesterson and husband Joe of Wickes, Arkansas
Sisters: Thelma Lee Baker of St. Maries, Idaho Bonnie Richardson of Wickes, Arkansas Winnona Davis Brewer of Wickes, Arkansas
Grandchildren: Melinda Tadlock of Wickes, Arkansas Loren Kesterson of Wickes, Arkansas Twila Wilson of Wickes, Arkansas
5 Great Grandchildren 7 Great, Great Grandchildren and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clovis Marsh and a great great grandson, Joshuah Elvin Tadlock.

Funeral services will be Thursday, December 24, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Wickes Pentecostal Church with Reverend Chris Burk officiating. Interment will follow in the Daniel Cemetery in Wickes under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

Bette Jo Jackson Kivelle

Bette Jo Jackson Kivelle, age 80, a resident of Bartlett, TN, died December 20, 2009.

Bette was born January 15, 1929, in Ashdown, AR, and grew up in Horatio, AR. She was a wonderful homemaker and an active member of Bartlett Hills Baptist Church. Bette was active in many types of mission work and served as both President and Director of the Women’s Missionary Union for several years. She was a Christian lady who was an inspiration to her family and friends.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Josie Jackson, one sister, Mary Frances Ward, and one brother, Buck Jackson, all life long residents of Horatio, AR., and her husband of 41 years, William Arnold Kivelle.

Bette is survived by two sons, William Allen Kivelle and wife Sue Ellen, and Eddie J. Kivelle and wife Polly, one daughter, Jo Ann Kivelle Parkinson and husband J.D. Parkinson, a sister Virginia Jackson Hamner of Horatio, AR, eight grandchildren and one great grandson.
Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. with a service at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday December 22 both at the Millington Chapel. Private interment to follow at the West Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery beside her husband William A. Kivelle, Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering c/o Bartlett Hills Baptist Church, 4641 Ellendale Rd., Bartlett, TN 38135.
