Leonard L. Pruitt

Mr. Leonard L. Pruitt, age 83, a resident of De Queen, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011 in the Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.

He was born November 21, 1927 in Bowie County, Texas. He was a retired high voltage electrical supervisor for the Red River Army Depot, a member of the IBEW Local Union 301 and a member of the Kern Heights Baptist Church in De Queen.

Mr. Pruitt was preceded in death by his parents, Cashus and Bessie Balch Pruitt; his wife, Mazie Fenton Pruitt; three brothers, Charlie Ray, Esto and Lee Pruitt and one great-grandson, B.J. McWhorter.

After the passing of his dear wife, Leonard was determined that he wanted to reflect Christ's love to his children, grandchildren, friends, and strangers in any way he could. And he did!

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kerwin and Johnnie Pruitt of Maumelle, Arkansas and Ricky and Salena Pruitt of De Queen; three daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra and Bobby McWhorter of Lockesburg, Karla Pruitt of Fernando Beach, Florida and Davonna Ridley of Lockesburg; two sisters, Barbara Costa and Marguerite Smith; six grandchildren, Terry Brackett, Amy Westerman, Kelsey Pruitt, Craig Ridley, Geordyn Ridley and Mazie Pruitt; two great-grandsons, Aaron and Austin Brackett and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Pruitt will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2011 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rusty Ross officiating. Burial will follow in the Redmen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 21st at the funeral home.

James Calvin Short Sr.
Mr. James Calvin Short, Sr., age 75, a resident of Horatio, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at his home.

He was born to A. J. and Juanita Elizabeth Tom Short at Soper, Oklahoma on May 6, 1935. He was a retired swine grower, and was of the Pentecostal faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outside.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Emerson J. Short, a great-granddaughter, Holly Rose Edens, and in 2007, his wife of over 52, years, Bernice Wilson Short.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-laws, James Calvin, Jr. and Josie Short of Wilmington, Delaware, Samuel J. Short of Horatio, and Pleze “Hot Rod” and Candace Short of Mountainburg, Arkansas, a daughter, Eloner Juanita “Tooter” Edens of Horatio, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Kermit and Rexene Short of Gold Beach, Oregon, Edmond Short of Horatio, Nick and Joyce Short of Gillham, Arkansas; Kenneth and Florene Short and A. T. Short all of De Queen; a sister, Maggie Ruth Alsobrook of Horatio, six grandchildren, Calvin Edens, Dustin, William, Jacob, Samantha, and Allison Short; five great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Brodey, Brady, Piper, and Addison, several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. J. C. Short will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Clear Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Thursday, April 21st from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Donald Edward Myers Jr.

Mr. Donald Edward Myers, Jr., age 51, a resident of Wickes, Arkansas, died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at his home.

He was born to Donald Edward, Sr. and Mary Woods Myers at Norfolk, Virginia, on January 4, 1960. He was a former USDA Inspector. He was a Baptist, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, and 4-wheelers.

He is survived by his x-wife, Norma Jean Wright of Broken Bow, Okla. a son, Dustin Edward Myers of Van Buren, Arkansas, a daughter, Shermeka Myers of Broken Bow, Okla.; and a brother, Randy Myers of Houston, Texas.

A private memorial service will be at at later date. Cremation arrangements are under the Direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Mary Fay Cox Hockersmith

Mrs. Mary Fay Cox Hockersmith, age 73, a resident of Gillham, died Wednesday, April 13th at her home.

She was born to Ellis Kerry and Elsie Jane Kerr Cox at Gillham, Arkansas, on February 16, 1938. She was an RN, and a retired employee of De Queen Medical Center. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, De Queen, and enjoyed painting, reading, and watching the news. She also loved animals.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Linda Kay Davis, a brother, Dale Edward Cox, her son, Thomas Kerry Hockersmith, and her husband, W. C. Hockersmith.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William “Bill” and Cindy Hockersmith of Gillham, a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Louis Byers of Conway, Arkansas, a daughter-in-law, Caroline Hockersmith of Gillham; seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Mary Hockersmith will be held at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 14th in the Valley Cemetery with Bro. Ray Reynolds officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Patsy L. Truitt
Mrs. Patsy L. Truitt, age 89, a resident of De Queen died Monday, April 11, 2011 in Springdale, AR.

She was born December 17, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Rumley Truitt in 2003; and her parents, Platt Taylor and Lillie Belle Greene Tuttle.

She is survived by a nephew, James May of Bella Vista, AR; two great nieces, Kalista May and Jorden May; and one great nephew, Alex May, and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Truitt will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2011 in the Redmen Cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the funeral home.

Robert Arnold Sartwelle

Mr. Robert Arnold Sartwelle, age 82, a resident of Gillham, Arkansas, died Saturday, April 09, 2011, at his home.

He was born to James Williams and Lura Charlotte Arnold Sartwelle in Houston, Texas, on July 14, 1928. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the U. S. Navy. He was formerly with Port City Stockyards in Sealy, Texas, and a retired president of the International Committee of the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo. He attended the First Baptist Church of Gillham, and enjoyed fishing, boating, and flying.

Mr. Sartwelle was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, James Dinsmore Sartwelle, Margaret Lura DeBardeleben, Carolina Olivia Buffaloe, and William Henry Sartwelle, and a step-daughter; Marsha Jones.

He is survived by his wife of over 35 years, Wanda L. O’Neal Sartwelle of Gillham, a son, Glen McCarter Sartwelle of League City, Texas, a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine Sartwelle Herring and Steve Herring of Austin, Texas, four grandchildren, Jessica Anne Herring, Meredith Elise Herring, Grant Luther Herring, and James Durrett, a great-grandchild, Amanda Durrett, two sisters, Mary Jane Willis of Sugarland, Texas, and Helen Buckley of Houston, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Robert Sartwelle will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 11th in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob McManus officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Sunday, April 10th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Martha Kathleen Sutton Penney

Mrs. Martha Kathleen Penney, age 101, formerly of Ben Lomond, Arkansas, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011, in the Dubuis Hospital in Texarkana, Texas.

Born September 26, 1909, in Ben Lomond, Arkansas, she was a lifelong member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ben Lomond.

Mrs. Penney was preceded in death by her husband, John Dosier Penney, and four brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by one son, Joe Edd and wife Janice Penney of Ben Lomond; three daughters, Betty Penney Britt and husband B.A., Jr. of Texarkana, TX.; Ruth Penney Davis of Texarkana, AR. and Martha Penney Trusley and husband John of Ashdown, AR.; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 11, 2011, at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ben Lomond with Rev. Herman Welch and Rev. John Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in the Ben Lomond Cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

Ina Margaret Baker

Mrs. Ina Margaret Baker, age 88, a resident of Oklahoma City, Okla., former resident of De Queen, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011.

She was born September 26, 1922 at Kansas City, Missouri. Music was her passion and she enjoyed teaching piano lessons for over 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Baker.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Debbie Baker, a daughter, Margaret Baker Campbell, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, April 8th at the Mansion at Waterford in Oklahoma City, Okla. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm., Saturday, April 9th in the Mt. Ida Cemetery, De Queen. Local arrangements are under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Leila Mae Bishop Mullins

Mrs. Leila Mae Bishop Mullins, age 81, a longtime resident of De Queen, AR died Wednesday, April 6, 2011 in the St. Joseph’s Health System in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

She was born December 7, 1929 in Tulsa, OK. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

Mrs. Mullins was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Cecil Bishop, Sr. and Laura Jane Carlock Bishop; her husband, Leroy Mullins on July 29, 1999; and a sister, Mary Williams.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Shawn Moore of Spokane, WA and Kathy and Danny Robinson of Austin, AR; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Susan Mullins of Mansfield, TX and Ralph and Jenny Mullins of Murfreesboro, AR; two brothers, Charles Bishop, Jr. of Nashville, AR and James Bishop of El Dorado, AR; one sister, Marie Stow of Tulsa, OK; nine grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mullins will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011 in the De Queen Church of Christ with Charles Krudwig, minister officiating. Burial will follow in the Smyrna Cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2011 at the funeral home.

Gareth “Gary” Owen, Sr.
Mr. Gareth “Gary” Owen, Sr. age 64, a resident of De Queen, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at his home.

He was born May 8, 1946 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict and he was a member of the Solid Rock Church in Horatio.

Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his parents, Bonner and Inez Davis Owen.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Lewis Owen of De Queen; two sons, Gary Owen, Jr. and Matthew Owen both of Shreveport, Louisiana; three brothers, six sisters and two grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
