Lorena Darnall Dixon

Mrs. Lorena Darnall Dixon, age 94, of De Queen, Arkansas, died Monday, January 17, 2011 in the De Queen Medical Center.

Mrs. Dixon was born April 2, 1916 in Columbus, Arkansas, the daughter of Dr. Henry H. and Laura Stuart Darnall. She grew up in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School in 1934. After graduating from a business school in Amarillo, Texas, she returned to Foreman, Arkansas, where she was employed at the local bank. Later she went to work for the Little River County welfare department until she met her husband, John L. Dixon. The couple moved to De Queen where Lorena worked in the Sevier County Courthouse. In 1949 she began a career as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools that would span four decades and the tenures of four superintendents. She retired from the De Queen Public School System in 1983.

Mrs. Dixon was a devout and dedicated Christian and was a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church of De Queen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Herbert Darnall and Charles Darnall; and one sister, Frances Bryant.

Mrs. Dixon is survived by three nephews, Rex Stuart Darnall and his wife Katie on Panhandle, Texas, Charles T. Darnall and his wife Pam of Eagle River, Alaska, and John D. Darnall and his wife, Debby of Harrison, Arkansas; one niece, Emily Vonk and her husband, Harold of Ogden, Utah. Having no children of her own, Mrs. Dixon always felt that God had called her to be a mother to the many students that came through the De Queen Public School System. She was a very special person who will be greatly missed.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. Dixon will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in the Redmen Cemetery with John Darnall officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Myrtle Lucille Cowart

Myrtle Lucille Cowart, age 75, a resident of Umpire, AR entered into Heaven, Sunday, January 16, 2011 in Dierks Health and Rehabilitation.

She was born November 13, 1935 to Opie and Juaidell Reese Lowry in Ranger, TX. She was retired from Weyerhaeuser Company where she worked in the logging division. She was also a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.

Mrs. Cowart was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Max Cowart on September 18, 2010; a sister, Wilda O’Vida Lowry and a brother-in-law, Lee Lemons.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Donna Cowart of Dierks, AR; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wilda and Kenneth Turner and Lisa and Dennis Kitchens, all of Umpire; two grandsons and their spouses, Tommy and Terri Turner of Umpire and David and Mary Cowart of Shreveport, LA; three granddaughters, Alicia Kitchens and Nikki Kitchens Moore, both of Umpire, and Krista and Douglas Gregory of Ft. Polk, LA; one sister, Clista Lemons of Horatio, AR and one sister-in-law, Sue Owens of Pampa, TX; seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Cowart will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in the Bethel Cemetery with Bro. Kyle Cowart and Bro. Don Vaughn officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home of Dierks.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at the funeral home in Dierks.

Ethel Ann Stewart

Mrs. Ethel Ann Stewart, age 88, a resident of Center, Texas formerly of Little River County, Arkansas died Saturday, January 15, 2011 in Center.

She was born on September 3, 1922 in Arkinda, Arkansas. She was a retired nurse and a member of the First Baptist Church in Center, Texas.

Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Stewart; one son, Charles R. Price; her parents, Robert S. and LaVada Smith Horn; two brothers, A.C. and Jimmy Horn and her sister Gladys Dawson.

She is survived by one son, John L. and Karren Price of Center; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Graveside services for Mrs. Stewart will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2011 in the Gravelly Cemetery with Audie Dawson officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Monday, January 17th at the funeral home.

Ronnie Dean Phillips

Ronnie Dean Phillips, age 61, a resident of Grannis, Arkansas passed away Saturday, January 15, 2011 at his home.

He was born on February 17, 1949 in Baytown, Texas. He was a retired craftsman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norville H. “Tuffy” and Metah Belle Gentry Phillips; and a brother, Norville Wayne Phillips.

He is survived by a son, Matt Phillips of Casper Wyoming; daughter, Ronda Phillips of Grannis; brother, Bob Phillips of Grannis; sister, Sue Gibson of Broken Bow, Oklahoma; two special grandsons, Nick and Luke Phillips of the home; five granddaughters and two great grandchildren; special niece, Candi Frachiseur of Grannis; five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; and several nephews, cousins and friends.

Memorial services for Mr. Phillips will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 20, 2011 in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

Eileen Marie Rosenbaum

Eileen Marie Rosenbaum, age 65 of Nashville, passed away, Monday, January 10, 2011 at home with her family by her side.

She was born March 9, 1945 in Los Angles, California to the late John O’Connor and Ruth Louisa Lins Burke. She was retired from Weyerhaeuser Company and was a Catholic. Eileen enjoyed cleaning, gardening, playing Yatzee, and reading. She was the hardest working woman in the world. She was a very good cook, loved decorating her house for the different seasons. Most of all she was a loving mother and she loved life dearly.

Graveside services will be Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 2 pm. at County Line Cemetery with Bro. James Spradlin officiating. The family will receive friends at Nashville Funeral home on Wednesday night from 6 to 8 pm Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, to the Look Good, Feel Good Program.

Donna Hungate McCaleb

Mrs. Donna Hungate McCaleb, age 74, a resident of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, January, 9, 2011.

She was born January 11, 1936 in Grannis, Arkansas. She was retired from Southwestern Bell and a member of Christian Ministries in Hot Springs.

Mrs. McCaleb was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn H. and Edna Pickens Hungate; one sister, Louise Pfleger and one brother, Ralph Hungate.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sonja McCaleb of Hot Springs and Glenn and Susan McCaleb of League City, Texas; one sister, Wanda Sue Ray of Mesquite, Texas and four grandchildren and their spouses, Jordan and Meridith McCaleb, Courtney and Eric Overaker, Brittany and Devin Dickinson and Andrea Douglas.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. McCaleb will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 15, 2011 in the Grannis Cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Christian Ministries Church in Hot Springs.

Memorials may be made to Potter’s Clay, 1032 Malvern Ave., Hot Springs, AR 71901.

Dorothy Dell Powell

Mrs. Dorothy Dell Powell, age 64, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Thursday, January 6th at her home.

She was born to W. C. and Minnie Nelson Hopkins at Nashville, Arkansas, on December 24, 1946. She was former owner of Dorothy’s Hair Loom of De Queen, and was a private care giver, as well as a homemaker. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, and enjoyed crocheting, knitting fishing, and playing cards, and dominoes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clarence Goff, her first husband, Charles Johnson, a son, Otis Powell, Jr., and a grandchild, Otis Powell, III.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Otis Powell, Sr. of De Queen, five sons and daughters-in-law, Charles & Shaw Johnson, Lonnie Johnson both of De Queen, Ark.; Jimmy Ray and Lilly Johnson of Lockesburg, Kevin Wayne and Sonya Johnson of Addison, Texas, and Justin and Sarah Powell of Mountainburg, Ark.; five step-daughters and spouses, Gwendolyn Bell, Sandra and Ronnie Anderson, and Naudi Powell all of De Queen, Viola and Fred Spencer of Waukegan, Ill, and Gaberilla Powell of Keller, Texas, Two step-sons, David Darnell Phillips of Waukegan, Ill, and Cory Powell of Humble, Texas, five brothers and sisters-in-law, George Jordan, Frank Jordan and Tony and Doris Whitmore all of De Queen, Steve and Elonda Whitmore of Broken Bow, Okla.; and Jerry Whitmore of Denver, Col., five sisters and brothers-in-law, Annie Maull, and April Bennett both of De Queen, Ark.; Clara and Albert Wilburn of Kansas City, Missouri, Dorothy and Lester Pigee of Jacksonville, Ark. and Marie Baker of De Queen, twenty-three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Dorothy Powell will be held Saturday, January 15th in the Lewis Temple Church of God in Christ with Super indent E. A. Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 14th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Clayton A. Parish

Clayton A. Parish, of Nashville, AR went home to be with the Lord on January 10, 2011 at Howard Memorial Hospital at the age of 79. He was born on September 12, 1931 in Sevier County to Edgar Parish and Jereene Ayers Parish.

He graduated from Nashville High School in 1949. He served his country in the United States Air Force for 24 years. He retired as Chief Master Sergeant from the Air Force on February 1, 1975, and then worked at Parrish Equipment and Dwayne’s TV Repair. He was a faithful member and deacon of Unity Missionary Baptist Church, Nashville, AR.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, John Parrish, Alton Parrish and Earl Parish; and his sister Beulah Jones and Wanda Mullins.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Jones Parish of Nashville, AR; one son and daughter-in-law, Clayton Dwayne and Sonja Parish of Lockesburg, AR; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Nicholas and Vicki Parish of Conway, AR; one granddaughter and fiancé, Katrina Parish of Conway, AR and Jacob Barton of Greenbrier, AR; one sister, Norma Atchley of Nashville, AR; sister-in-law and husband, Lula and Jim Staib of North Richland Hills, TX; a number of nieces and nephews; a host of friends; and his beloved dog, Miss Faith.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Unity Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville, AR with Bro. David Cassidy and Bro. Buddy McKamie officiating with burial to follow in Unity Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Unity Baptist Church or Unity Cemetery Fund.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday at Latimer Funeral Home.

Gertrude Ophelia Sammons Lee

Gertrude Ophelia Sammons Lee, age 97, a resident of De Queen, AR died Saturday, January 08, 2011 at her home.

She was born May 6, 1913 in Goldthwaite, TX. She was a retired college professor, a graduate of De Queen High School, a member of the Cossatot Arts and Crafts and the Homemakers Extension. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of DeQueen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Frank and Hattie Mae Hanlon Sammons; her husband, Maurice Lee; two half brothers, Arthur Lee Sale and Gene Alvin Sale.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Lee will be held Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Redmen Cemetery with Van Ledbetter, minister officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2011 at the funeral home.
