Alta Rogers Durham

Alta Rogers Durham, born January 27, 1914, died December 8, 2011 after a brief illness.

Alta was born in Cedarville, Arkansas, to Charles and Rachael Rogers. She attended Business College in Fort Smith, AR and went to work for the Kansas City Southern railroad. She was transferred to De Queen in 1936. She married Lowell Durham, a Sevier County native, in 1939 and lived in De Queen until 1946. She and Lowell moved to Texarkana, then to Tulsa, OK in 1952. She worked for Oklahoma State University’s Home Demonstration office until her retirement. She and Lowell returned to De Queen when they retired in 1976.

Mrs. Durham was a member of First United Methodist Church, and the hospital auxiliary. She volunteered through the hospital auxiliary at the De Queen Regional Hospital’s gift shop for 34 years. She was an accomplished seamstress making her family beautiful clothing. She was an avid gardener raising blueberries which she shared with her friends.

She lost her husband, Lowell, in 1987. She is survived by her daughter Mary Durham and son in law Jim Hunnicutt of Plain, WA; and her daughter Diane Callahan of Seattle, WA. Her grandchildren are Capt. Lindsey Callahan, who is stationed with the Air Force Judge Advocate General (JAG) in England and Todd Callahan, a graduate student at the University of Washington Foster School of Business, living in Seattle, WA. Her local family is Imogene Durham, O.H. (Rusty) and Judy Durham, Karen Trammell and Jan Durham. Her brother, Pete Rogers, lives in Susanville, CA and niece, Sue Bourns, lives in Van Buren, AR.

She was a lovely lady, always well dressed and dignified. She was most often described as spunky. She will be missed.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at 10 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Redmen Cemetery. Donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in De Queen, Arkansas.

Billy Charles Friday

Mr. Billy Charles Friday, age 71, a resident of Lockesburg, Arkansas died Thursday, December 8, 2011 in the Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, Texas.

He was born June 2, 1940 in Lockesburg. He was the former owner of Friday’s Office Supply in Denton, Texas, a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Lockesburg and a U.S. Air Force Veteran.

Mr. Friday was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Thelma Bailey Friday; and one brother, Alvin Friday.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Marquis Friday of Lockesburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, Adam and Jennifer Friday of Aubrey, Texas, John and Stephanie Friday of Denton, Texas and Jade Allen and Delinda Brown of Flower Mound, Texas; two daughters and one son-in-law, JoAnn Luksich of Denton, Texas and Kim and Tony Cummings of Richardson, Texas; 14 grandchildren, Zachary, Baylee, Emily and Katy Friday, Becki Bouchard, Beth Wright, Courtney Luksich, Collin, Kade, Savannah and Naomi Cummings, Morgan Allen, Marcus Holmes and Candace Brown; two great-grandchildren, Lily and Owen Wright; one brother, Bobby Friday of Lockesburg, Arkansas; one sister, Mary Linda Riley of De Queen and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Friday will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2011 in the First Baptist Church in Lockesburg with Rev. Harrol Bowman officiating. Burial will follow in the Belleville Cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, December 12th at the funeral home.

Jack T. Lyons

Mr. Jack T. Lyons, age 84, a resident of Longview, Texas and former resident of De Queen, Arkansas died Wednesday, December 7, 2011 in Longview.

He was born July 14, 1927 in De Queen, Arkansas.

Mr. Lyons was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Zadie Lyons, Sr. and his wife, Peggy Louise Benson Lyons.

He is survived by one daughter, Elaine Clicker of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Steve Lyons and Dennis Lyons both of Longview, Texas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Lyons will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 10, 2011 in the Redmen Cemetery with David Williams officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen, Arkansas.

Ruby Rae Graves

Ruby Rae Graves, age 100, a resident of Dierks, Arkansas died Monday, December 5, 2011 in Dierks at the home of her niece, Bennie Faye Alsabrook.

She was born November 16, 1911 in the Greens Chapel Community. After spending most of her childhood in Greens Chapel, she lived with relatives in Dierks, Gillham, and Lockesburg in order to continue her education. She graduated salutatorian at Lockesburg High School in 1933.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, AR and a Master’s Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN. During Ms. Graves’s 42 years of dedication to public school children, she flawlessly coordinated the integration effort in the 1960‘s in the Broken Bow School District.
She also taught English as a second language to 125 Vietnamese children and their families when they settled into Southeast Oklahoma.

She enjoyed her retirement in her hometown of Dierks where she was active in the First United Methodist Church in Broken Bow and Dierks, past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, and a Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. In 1996 she was honored in McCurtain County for her outstanding community service.
Although she had many achievements, she considered her faith, family, friends, and students her greatest treasure.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Addie and Hattie Sanders Graves; three sisters, Ruth Watson, Pearl Cox and Burt Stephens; three brothers, Carl Graves, David I. Graves, and Floyd Graves.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Ms. Graves will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2011 in the First United Methodist Church in Dierks with Rev. Robert Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in the Greens Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 6th at the funeral home in Dierks.

Charles Joseph Rochelle II

Mr. Charles Joseph Rochelle II, age 85, a resident of Lockesburg, Arkansas, died Thursday, December 1, 2011 at his home.

He was born August 8, 1926 in Winthrop, Arkansas. He was a truck driver, gunsmith, and a World War II veteran having served 17 years in the U.S Army and a lifetime member of the NRA.

Mr. Rochelle was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Joseph and Willie Lee Hatter Rochelle; one daughter, Nina Leach; two sisters, Irene Adlot and Jimmy Dierks; two brothers, Audie Brock and Claudine Brock.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Trula Whisenhunt Rochelle of Lockesburg; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Stanley Joseph and Carmelita Rochelle, Samuel Joseph and Ginger Rochelle and grandson, Alex, all of Lockesburg and Charles Joseph and Kathy Rochelle of Ranger, Texas; three daughters, Linda Andrews of Boise, Idaho Janie Wallace of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Sherry Hardin of Missouri and a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mr. Rochelle will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2011 in the Midway Baptist Church with Pastor Keith May officiating.

Dorothy Lee Clayton McCombs

Mrs. Dorothy Lee Clayton McCombs, age 80, a resident of Foreman, Arkansas, died Sunday, December 4, 2011 at her home.

She was born July 8, 1931 in Arkansas. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family, working in the yard and playing with her dog.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lillie Belle Sullivan Clayton; her husband, Hoyt McCombs, a granddaughter, Kara McCombs Halliday, a great granddaughter, Dallas Halliday; one sister and two brothers.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Sonya McCombs, of Foreman, Arkansas, Steve and Diane McCombs from Kentucky, one daughter, Rhonda McCombs of Foreman, Arkansas; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Clayton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, two sisters, Mary Clayton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Martha Jackson of Hatton, Arkansas; a sister-in-law, Carla Clayton of Foreman, Arkansas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews and a number of friends.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. McCombs will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2011 in the Dollarhide Cemetery in Foreman with Chris Clayton officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, December 5th at the funeral home.

Martha Jayne Talley

Mrs. Martha Jayne Talley, age 72, a resident of Whitesboro, Texas formerly of De Queen, Arkansas, passed away Friday, December 2, 2011 in Sherman, Texas.

She was born March 16, 1939 in De Queen, Arkansas to Amos Lee and Delia Nadine Tosh Brake. She married Tommy Wayne Talley, October 1, 1958 in Idabel, Oklahoma. She was a homemaker and retired from Weber Aircraft, Gainesville, Texas. She loved painting, crafting and wrote a couple of children books. She loved her church and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one step-grandson, Richard Lee Vail; one step-granddaughter, Laura Ann Vail Stovall and her beloved mother-in-law, Rachel Talley and father-in-law, Tommy Talley; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Gennevieve Sharp Brake and one sister, Patsy Brake Kenny.

She is survived by two sons, Benny Keith and his wife Malaine Talley of Whitesboro and Jerry Wayne and his wife Ann Talley of Hollycreek, Oklahoma; one grandson Justin Keith and his wife Krista Talley and one great grandson Joshua Talley of Whitesboro, Texas; two step-grandsons, Max Vail II of Glover, Oklahoma and Jimmy Hill of Texas; two step-granddaughters, Janet Vail and her husband Johnny Leigh of Golden and Holly Burgess and family of Gainesville; two sisters, Treasa Brake and husband Chris Wilson of Singleton, Texas and Melinda Brake and husband Bobby Irby of Arkansas; nine step-granddaughters, Melody Stovall Campos, Patti Stovall Chapman, Kayla Stovall and husband Willy Cook, Michelle Stovall, Lacy Stovall, Stephaine Clackum, April Clackum, Amanda Leigh Kerrin and Micky Stovall Blankship; seven step-great grandsons, Max Vail III, Mark Vail, Hank Clackum Jr. and wife Mindy, Scott Lee, James Richard Stovall, Jimmy Lee Stovall and Mitchell Stovall; eight step- great-great grandchildren, Izabelle Cook, Kayllyn Cook Heaydin Clackum, Madysin Clackum, Serena Kerrin, Isaiah Amoles, Trinity Cook and Lori Richie.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. Talley will be held at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2011 in the Redmen Cemetery in De Queen, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, December 5th at the home of James and Donna Mitchell.

Jackie Lynn White

Jackie Lynn White, age 62, of De Queen, died Friday, December 2, 2011.

He was born on July 15, 1949 at San Antonio, Texas, the son of Beecher Langley White and Doris White House. Jackie married Brenda Jean Mack on March 6, 1969. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father, Wesley Tinker House; and his brother, Bobby White.

Jackie was Baptist in his faith and a United States Army Veteran. He served in Vietnam and attained the rank of Sergeant and was also a Paratrooper in the 101 Airborne. He enjoyed fishing, but his greatest love was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Brenda White of De Queen; three sons and daughter-in-law, Trevor White of Nashville, Arkansas, Tracy and Misty White of Broken Bow, Oklahoma and B. J. White of De Queen; his daughter, Jessie White of De Queen; seven grandchildren; two step-sisters, Phyllis Cogburn and Frankie Jackson both of Alpine; one aunt, cousins, nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 6, 2011 in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood with Bro. Raymond Dees officiating.

Interment will be in the Lodi Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be James Mack, Donnie Forrest, Ronnie Forrest, Steven Forrest, Trenton White, Jeffrey White, Joseph Musick and Jason Mack.
