Norma Jean Eaves

Mrs. Norma Jean Eaves, age 73, a resident of Horn Lake, Mississippi, died Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in Horn Lake.

She was born November 28, 1939. She was a retired USDA inspector and a member of the Bellvue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

Mrs. Eaves was preceded in death by her parents, Nesbitt D. and Ruby Jewel Hardiman Denton and her husband, Benny W. Eaves.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Roger Tollett of Lockesburg, AR; one son, Steve Mattox and companion Debra Freeman of Lockesburg, AR; one sister, Katharine Childers of Tollison, AZ; five grandchildren; Stephanie Stacy and husband David of Lockesburg, AR, Carrie Mattox of Lockesburg, AR, David Mattox of Lockesburg, AR, Matt Tollett and wife Megan of Benton, Arkansas, Jeff Tollett and wife Sunni of Lockesburg, AR; and five great-grandchildren, Paige, Justin, Blake, Lacy, Kane and Landon.

Graveside Memorial Services for Mrs. Eaves were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 14, 2012 in the Coulter Memorial Cemetery in Lockesburg with Rev. Roy Conatser officiating.

Cecil and Mary Harris

Cecil Lavere “Birddog” Harris also known as “Bobie”, age 74 and Mary Catherine Harris, age 66, both of Nashville, died on Saturday, December 15, 2012 in Hope.

Cecil was born on September 19, 1938 in Fellowship, Arkansas, the son of the late Fletcher G. and Ruby (Glover) Harris. He was employed by the Nashville News, where photography was his passion, delivered the Texarkana Gazette, a member of the Nashville Rural Water Board, a member of the historical society, member of the Gideon’s, and member and deacon of the Antioch Baptist Church in Nashville. Survivors include, one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Bethany Harris of Nashville; one grandson, Andy; one granddaughter, Scarlett; one sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and David Young of Dierks; one niece, Jennifer Brown of Santa Anna, TX; one nephew, Dave Young of Benton, AR.

Mary was born on December 23, 1945 in Las Cruces, NM the daughter of the late L.C. and Dorothy Charlene (Roberts) Odom. She worked as Office Manager or Latimer Funeral Home for 20 year, was Sunday school secretary, and treasurer for over 35 years at Antioch Baptist Church and member of Antioch Baptist Church. Survivors include, one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Bethany Harris; one grandson, Andy, one granddaughter, Scarlett; and several cousins.

Services will be on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in the Latimer Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bobby Neal and Brother David Webb officiating. Burial to follow in Antioch Cemetery in Nashville, under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home.

Visitation will be on Monday, December 17, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

George Vernon Baker

George Vernon Baker, age 87, a resident of Burleson, Texas, and former resident of De Queen and El Dorado, died Saturday, December 8th in Burleson, Texas.

He was born to Baley B. and Lilly Elizabeth Perry Baker in Summerfield, Louisiana, on March 3, 1925. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as military pilot with the U. S. Army Air Corp. Mr. Baker retired from the U. S. Air Force Reserve as a chief master sergeant. He married Virginia Dale Atkinson at El Dorado, Arkansas on October 8, 1947. He worked for the U. S. Postal Service in El Dorado, and transferred to De Queen as Assistant Postmaster, and retired as Postmaster for the De Queen Post Office. Mr. Baker was a member of the United Methodist Church, was a Mason, and former Rotarian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Dale Baker, his parents, his siblings, Claude Austin, Milford, Eurville, Allene, Irene, Ellis, Arnold, and Marie.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, George, Jr. and Debbie Baker of Burleson, Texas, and Kenny and Vonda Baker Jonesboro, Arkansas, four grandchildren, Travis and his wife, Amy Baker and, Monica Baker all of Ft. Worth, Texas, Max, and Sam Baker of Jonesboro, Ark., a great-granddaughter, Georgia Baker of Ft. Worth, Texas, one brother, Donald Baker of Humble, Texas, one sister, Corrine McDade of Houston, Texas, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Vistation and Funeral Services for Mr. George Baker will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 13th in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel, De Queen, AR, with Rev. David Williams officiating. Graveside funeral services with military Honors will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, December 15th in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Eldorado, Arkansas, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen. Charles “Pete” Story

Charles “Pete” Story, 71, of Idabel, passed away December 9, 2012 in Idabel.

He was born April 26, 1941 in Grannis, Arkansas, the son of Houston B. and Rose Paris Story. He had lived in McCurtain County for the past 2 years, moving here from De Queen. He was a logger and of the Baptist faith. Pete enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Houston and Rose Story; brothers, Hubert Story, Lester Story, Chester Story, Melvin Story and David Story and by his sisters, Frances Story Hall, Mildred Story Robinson, Rosalyn Story Ward and Lorene Story Noey. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Doug Robinson of Sulphur Springs, TX; his daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Tony McKee of Idabel and Tina and Jose Lopez of Teneha, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Vicki Story of De Queen, Arkansas; sisters, Mary Story Wise of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Kayla (Story) and David Terwilliger of Mena, Arkansas, Candice (Vance) and Jose Torrez, Miguel and Betty Onate all of Center, Texas, Kimberly McKee and Jacob Taylor of Idabel, Jose “Tilli” Lopez, Jr. of Teneha, Texas and Misty McKee of Idabel; great-grandchildren, Austin and Cameron Terwilliger, Richard Dempsey Onate, Alaya Richard, Jose Torrez, Magaby Torrez and Miguel Onate, Jr.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 2pm at the home of Brenda and Tony McKee, 3607 NE Lincoln Rd, Idabel, with Pastor Timothy Johnson officiating

Gladys Laverne Manasco Dossey

Mrs. Gladys Laverne Manasco Dossey, age 76, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at her home.

She was born February 5, 1936 in Gillham, Arkansas. She was a store clerk and a member of the Memorial Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Dossey was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Essie Marie Duncan Manasco; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Carylin Dossey; a daughter; Sherry Laverne Dossey; and a grandson, Blakely Dossey.

She is survived by her husband, Billy W. Dossey of De Queen; one daughter and son-in-law, Angelea and Kenneth Talley of De Queen; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan Bruce and Lorie Dossey of Glenwood, Arkansas and Brentley DeWayne and Shelia Dossey of Clarksville, Arkansas; one brother, Vernon J. Manasco of Albuquerque, New Mexico; 9 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. Dossey will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in the Manasco Cemetery with Chad Gallagher officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Kenneth Jefferson Hendrix

Mr. Kenneth Jefferson Hendrix, age 72, a resident of De Queen, died Saturday, December 8, 2012 at his home.

He was born on March 15, 1940 in Gillham, Arkansas. He was a member of the St. Barbara Catholic Church and was a retired Chief Warrant Officer in the Army.

Mr. Hendrix was preceded in death by his parents, Smith Henry and Ellen Wylie Hendrix; one son, Smith Henry Hendrix and one brother, Benjamin Wylie Hendrix.

He is survived by his wife, Delia Hendrix of De Queen, Arkansas; one son, Kenneth John Hendrix of Big Springs, Texas; a grandson, Russell Hendrix of De Queen; a brother, John H. Hendrix of De Queen and a number of nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and special friends, Fernando and Mica Lopez.

Funeral Mass for Mr. Hendrix will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 in the St. Barbara Catholic Church with Father Eddy D'Almeida officiating. Burial will follow in the Hendrix Family Cemetery.

A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel.

Corene Ruth Young Ayers

Mrs. Corene Ruth Young Ayers, age 91, a resident of Horatio, Arkansas, died Friday, December 07, 2012, in the Dierks Health & Rehab, Dierks, Ark.

She was born to W.T. “Bill" and Edna Pearl Sims Young at Horatio, Arkansas, on April 6, 1921. She was an employee of Mountaire Poultry, poultry grower for Pilgrim’s Pride for over 20 years, as well as a homemaker. Corene and her husband, Robert Ayers were farm family of the year in 1969. She was a charter member of the Nix Chapel Church of The Nazarene, where she served as church secretary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Ayers, a son, Bobby Wayne Ayers, three infant sons, Michael, Ronald, and Donald Ayers, a grandson, David Irvan, and three sisters, Hazel Ruby Rust, Louise Power, and Verna McGough

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Dale and Rendy Ayers, William Y. “Billy” and Wanda Ayers, all of Horatio, a daughter, Deborah Ayers of Lockesburg, a daughter-in-law, Velma Ayers of Ashdown, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Inez Taylor of Lockesburg, and Beth Brooks of Winthrop, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Corene Ayers will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 10th in the Old Center Church, Horatio, with Bro. Sam Hendricks and Bro. Ralph Staggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Sunday, December 9th from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M.

John Westly Taylor

Mr. John Wesley Taylor, age 72, a resident of New Hope, Arkansas, died Friday, February 8, 2013, in the Dierks Health & Rehab, Dierks, AR.

Arrangements are pending at Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen, Arkansas.

India Mae Higgins

India Mae Higgins, age 89, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas died Friday, February 8, 2013 in the Brookewood Nursing Center in De Queen.

She was born April 4, 1923 in Newhope, Arkansas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church in De Queen.

Mrs. Higgins was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Mable Marshall Logan: her husband, Earl Higgins: and 2 sisters and 2 brothers.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Vickie Higgins of Horatio, Arkansas and one daughter, Judy Moss of De Queen, Arkansas and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

funeral Services for Mrs. Higgins will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 10, 2013 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Moody and George Frachiseur officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Ida Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, February 9th at the funeral home.

Merle Hartness Morphew

Merle Hartness Morphew of Newhope, Arkansas, departed this life Wednesday, February 6, 2013.

She was born September 28, 1925 to Elmer O and Lela Linville Hartness in Langley, Arkansas where she grew up and always considered “home”.

She was retired from Weyerhaeuser Dierks plywood where she worked for 17 years. She loved flowers and working in her huge lawn keeping everything well manicured. She was also very interested in family geneology and had many years of research on several different lines of her family. She loved telling stories of growing up and those times long ago. Also, local county and cemetery history was important to her and she contributed a great deal to several different books on the subjects. She enjoyed the teachings of the Bible and was always willing to study with anyone who was truly interested. She attended the Church of Christ at Newhope for near 50 years.

Mrs. Morphew was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard Morphew, brother, Clifton Hartness, sisters, Rachel Hartness Lloyd and Annis Hartness Blackwood. Also, a life long very special friend, D.C. Miller.

Survived by one son, R. Kent Hartness Morphew and wife Marsha, nephews, Brent Blackwood and Eugene Hartness, nieces, Carla Baker, Erlyne Wright, Glenda Snell, and Karen Turner. And, of course, many cousins, friends and neighbors and ex-daughter-in-law, Linda K. Hulsey.

Several years ago, Mrs. Morphew made her wishes known that she did not want a traditional funeral service, but preferred a simple graveside reading of this obituary by long time friend Gerald Eaton followed by a prayer. Burial will be at Langley Hall Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home, De Queen, Arkansas.
