Riggs

WALNUT RIDGE -- Mary Alene Riggs, 67, of Walnut Ridge died Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born in Arkansas, she lived in Hoxie before moving to Walnut Ridge 23 years ago. She was a homemaker and had worked at Walnut Ridge Convalescent Center for 16 years. She was of the Baptist belief.

Survivors include her husband, Maxie Riggs of the home; two daughters, Debra Cline of Lafe and Tammy Brown of Ravenden; and one brother, Louie Willfond of Hoxie.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Karnes; her parents, Louie and Dorothy Willfond; and two brothers.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at House-Gregg Funeral Home chapel in Walnut Ridge, with Junior Meeker officiating. Burial will follow in Duty Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include Jordan Brown, Steven Holsten, Christopher Holsten, Gary Patton, Chad Depew and Cloyce Davidson.

Visitation will be from 5:30-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Roper

VIOLA -- James William Roper, 60, of Viola died Friday, Sept. 3, in Mountain Home. He was employed by Aeroquip Eaton in Mountain Home and retired in 2001 after 25 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Gregory Roper; a daughter, Cindy Erwin of Jonesboro; three stepdaughters, Jackie Tate of Flippin, Jolene Johnson of Mountain Home; and Jimmie Haynes of Charleston; two granddaughters, Amanda Erwin and Lacee Roper; and six stepgrandchildren, Jacob Tate, Jenna Despain, Bobby Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Tyler Haynes and Tanner Haynes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Orus and Mary Angeline Dickerson Roper.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Flora Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Flora Cemetery. Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Smith

POCAHONTAS -- Lee Oma Smith, 92, of Pocahontas died Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Randolph County and had worked as a supervisor for Wagner Electric.

Survivors include a son, Jim Stalnaker of Walnut Ridge; a sister, Veona Stone of Paragould; and a grandson, Randy Stalnaker of Hoxie.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Chester Stalnaker; her second husband, William Smith; an infant daughter; and her parents, Johnny Mack and Ellen Frances Strickland Byrd.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home in Pocahontas, with Lynn Gramroth officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrence Memorial Park at Walnut Ridge.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Weedman

BLYTHEVILLE -- Edwin "Manny" Weedman, 77, of Blytheville died Monday, Sept. 6, at his residence.

Born at Blytheville, he was a lifelong resident of the area, an Army veteran and a former owner-operator of Descon Inc. in Blytheville and J L & M Construction in Mountain Home. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Julia Lea Harris of Bedford, Texas, Jenny Lou Firth of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Jerry Lynn Messick of Seattle; a son, Edwin McRae "Mac" Weedman of Mountain Home; a brother, Nick Weedman of Flat Rock, N.C.; two sisters, Anne Smith of Maplewood, N.J., and Billie Lou Bruce of West Lafayette, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mary Belle Nichols Weedman.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Cobb Funeral Home in Blytheville, with the Rev. Jim Firth officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Barber

MONETTE -- Gladys Barber, 88, of Monette, formerly of Dyess, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born at Mount Ida, she was a homemaker and a member of the Dyess Assembly of God.

Survivors include five sons, Robert Barber of Leachville, Loyd Barber and Terry Barber, both of Gosnell, Don Barber of Lepanto and Leo Barber of Turrell; four dau-ghters, Norma Turman of Me-mphis, Sharon Wilkey of Salem, Carolyn Wells of Texarkana, Texas, and Connie Nichols of Keiser; 27 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jefferson Barber; two sons, Bruce Wayne Barber and Alan McCullar; her parents, Orion and Vera Scott; three brothers; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Dyess Assembly of God, with the Rev. Brian Riles officiating. Burial will follow in Bassett Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Swift Funeral Home in Osceola.

Active pallbearers will include Mike McCullar, Mark Turman, Mitch Wilkey, Jeff Fite, Jason Barber, Chris Barber, Robert Wayne Barber, Albert McCullar and Randy McCullar.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Dyess Assembly of God.

Carlson

LEACHVILLE -- Rose Imogene "Jeanne" Carlson, 79, of Leachville died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born at Caraway, she lived in Rockford, Ill., most of her life, returning to Leachville following retirement as a teacher. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include one brother, George Conner of Jonesboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Carlson; her parents, Thomas L. and Lillie Marshall Conner, and three brothers.

Private funeral services will be conducted by Howard Funeral Service of Leachville.

Everett

MARKED TREE -- A memorial service for Michael Everett, 56, of Marked Tree, who died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at his residence, has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Marked Tree.

The Rev. Bob Hager and the Rev. Sheila Jones will officiate. Private interment will be under the direction of Langford-Bookout Funeral Home.

Born at Morton, he was a graduate of Arkansas State University and served as the deputy prosecutor of the 2nd Judicial District in Poinsett County in the mid-1970s.

He served in the Arkansas Senate from 1991-2002. During that time he served as chairman of the Judiciary Committee and was a member of the Joint Budget Committee and the Legislative Council and State Agency and Governmental Affairs Committee.

An attorney, he had served in the Arkansas National Guard and was a member of the Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Laurel Everett of Marked Tree; a son, Michael Wayne Everett of Los Angeles; a daughter, Casey Young of Horn Lake, Miss.; his mother, Lucille Everett of McCrory; a sister, Vonda Ann Milnor of Memphis; three brothers, Buck Everett of Wynne, John Everett of Prairie Grove and Scott Everett of McCrory; and two grandchildren, Zachary Cross Young and Colin Everett Young, both of Horn Lake.

No visitation has been planned.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Garner

LEPANTO -- Delia Garner, 81, of Lepanto died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born at Sulphur Rock, she was a longtime member of Lepanto Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Garner of Caraway and Jeff Garner of West Ridge; five daughters, Johnnie Adams of Collierville, Tenn., Allamae Ezell of Jonesboro, Wanda Kemp of Blytheville, Cynthia Willbanks of Tulsa, Okla., and Charlotte Garner of Etowah; one brother, Dale Harvison of Trumann; five sisters, Willene Garner of Lepanto, Vera Lewis of Redfield, Kathyrn Smart of Harrisburg, Leona Russell of Duck Hill, Miss., and Lillian Phillips of Jonesboro; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis "Bo" Garner Sr.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Murphy Funeral Home chapel in Lepanto, with Gary Masters officiating. Burial will follow in Potter Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
