Floy Mahdeen Romine

Floy Mahdeen Romine, 79, of Piggott died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott.

She was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Black Oak, Ark., the daughter of the late Oscar and Sophia Armstrong Hickey.

She was united in marriage to William Harold (Bill) Romine on Jan. 23, 1947, to this union two sons were born.

She was a homemaker and owner and operator of a beauty shop.

Preceding her in death were her husband, William Harold (Bill) Romine on April 13, 2000; one son, Ricky Romine in 1990; one sister; and three step-brothers.

She is survived by one son, Billy Romine and wife, Cher, of Piggott; one granddaughter, Amy Berberniss of Houston, Texas; step-brother, Felix Mangrum of Spokane, Wash.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, with Kevin Murray officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark Howell, Jeff Benbrook, Shane Vaughn, Gerald Vaughn, Raymond Dismukes and Larry Bierman. Honorary pallbearer was Jack Vaughn. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Letha J. Bell

Letha J. Bell, 83, of Decatur, Ind., died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Medowvale Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bluffton, Ind.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1920, in Piggott, the daughter of Charles and Sally Warren Harmon.

She was united in marriage to William E. Bell on Oct. 14, 1939.

Mrs. Bell was a homemaker and a member of the Grace Bible Missionary Church in Decatur.

She was preceded in death by one son, William E. Bell, Jr.; two brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by her husband, William E. Bell of Decatur; one son, Gerald Harmon of Enterprise, Okla.; two daughters, Ms. Linda Shaw of Liberty Center, Ind., and Mrs. Shirley Davis of Piggott; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at Irby Funeral Home in Piggott with Rev. Daniel York officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery in Piggott.

Julia Frances Fain Dalton

Julia Frances Fain Dalton, 87, of Piggott died Friday, March 5, 2004, in Kennett.

She was born Oct. 30, 1916, in Walnut Ridge, the daughter of the late Rev. Charles R. and Etta Jane "Nain" Hurn Fain.

She was a small child when her mother died in 1920. In 1924 she moved to Boynton Beach, Fla., to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Truly and Dr. Nathaniel Weems. She lived with them from 1924 until 1933. Before her junior year in high school, she moved to St. Francis, where her father (who was a long time Methodist minister in Northeast Arkansas) and step-mother lived. She graduated from high school in Campbell in 1935.

On Aug. 31, 1935, she married Burness O. Dalton in Piggott, to this union three sons were born.

Her husband served several years in the 1940's as Clay County Clerk and Sheriff and Collector; and he was a United States Marshal in the 1950's. While he was sheriff she served as his assistant. In 1951 they built the Dalton Motel on the east side of Piggott, which they operated until 1997.

She was a life-long Methodist and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Piggott for over 65 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, B.O. Dalton on Dec. 5, 2000; three brothers, John Fain, Dr. Roger Fain and Russell Fain; and one sister, Truly Weems.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, B.W. Dalton and wife, Robin, of Calhoun, Ga., Corky Dalton and wife, Eleanor, of Kennett and Gary and wife, Helene, of Germantown, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Steve Dalton, Fain Dalton and Charles Dalton, all of North Carolina, and their mother, Amanda Dalton Lane of Cherokee Village, Dr. Kyle Dalton of Conway, Beth Dalton Craig of Kennett and Jennifer Dalton of Tennessee; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Holder of Southgate, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Dalton Palmer of Piggott and Edythe Fain of Lake Worth, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Piggott with Charles Cooper officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery in Piggott.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Piggott or to any charity of the donor's choosing.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Albert Carroll Romines

Albert Carroll Romines, 80, of Piggott died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

He was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Pocahontas, the son of the late Clifford and Alma Pearl Haas Romines.

He was united in marriage to Stella Mae Meade on March 19, 1981, to this union one daughter was born, Shelby Romines.

He was a member of the Church of Christ on South Thornton Street in Piggott; a retired parts manager; and he mowed lawns in Piggott for the last 22 years.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Romines.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Romines of Piggott; one daughter, Shelby Romines of Piggott; two step-daughters, Trina Hackworth of Piggott and Rhonda Campbell of St. Clair, Mo.; eight grandchildren, including granddaughter Makalia Romines of the home; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carl Romines of Paragould, Herman Romines of Doe Run, Mo., and Eugene Romines of Clinton, Ark.; one sister, Virginia Murphy of Grapevine, Texas; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Richard Akins officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery in Piggott. Pallbearers were Mike Patterson, Charles Crafton, Harold Gill, Jeff Pollard, Richard Raspberry and Jerry Massey.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillie M. Craig Sowell

Lillie M. Craig Sowell, 82, of Conway died Sunday, March 7, 2004.

She was born Aug. 22, 1921, in Holland to the late Hugh L. Craig and Lillie Ann Parker Craig.

She was the widow of Walter Elmer Sowell, to whom she was married for 62 years until his death on Oct. 24, 2003.

She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and a FHA advisor. Mrs. Sowell, who earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, retired from teaching as the home economics teacher at Piggott after a long teaching career.

Prior to her illness, Mrs. Sowell was an active member of the Methodist churches in Piggott and Searcy, which is where she had moved after her retirement.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Opal Hoggard and Nora Ellen Suttle; and five brothers, Parker, Homer, Tom, Paul and Willie Craig.

She is survived by her daughter, Alice Ann Carlton and son-in-law, Jerry Carlton, of Conway; three grandchildren, Teresa Blakley of Austin, Texas, Angela Elsass of Fayetteville and Dale Carlton of Fayetteville; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Blakley of Austin, Texas, and Andrew and Matthew Elsass of Fayetteville; and three sisters, Jimmie Ford of Bald Knob, Eva J. Langford and Hazel Walther, both of Conway.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Vilonia Cemetery with Dale Carlton officiating.

Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway was in charge of the arrangements.

Flora Jane Meade

Flora Jane Meade, 83, of Piggott died Monday, March 1, 2004, in the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott.

She was born March 30, 1920, in Crockett, the daughter of the late Alonzo Cleveland and Katie Mae Groves Johnson.

She was united in marriage to Ivan Meade on Jan. 4, 1941, to this union seven children were born.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Jane Meade; two sons, Ivan Henry Lee Meade and Bobby Meade; three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her husband, Ivan Meade of Piggott; one daughter, Debra Johnson of Jonesboro; three sons, Ralph Meade of Bono, Jerry Meade of Pocahontas and Ricky Meade of Piggott; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with C.O. Evans officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery in Piggott. Pallbearers were J.R. Somers, Jerome Meade, Jason Somers, Timothy Johnson, Sonny Johnson and Carlos Crittenden.

Helen May Stumbo Colglazier Morgan

Helen May Stumbo Colglazier Morgan of Searcy died Sunday, March 7, 2004.

She was born March 23, 1927, in LaHarpe, Kan., and was the daughter of Ernest L. and Jewel Grizzle Stumbo.

Mrs. Morgan was a member of the College Church of Christ in Searcy. She was a 1944 graduate of Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kan., and attendend Lawrence Business College.

She married James Norris Colglazier on Feb. 12, 1946. He preceded her in death on Aug. 4, 1981. She married Gerald Glenn Morgan on Jan. 17, 2004.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Hazel Mary Stumbo (her twin), Velma Carol Schwartz and Ida Louise Menzies.

She is survived by her children, Sherla Winter of Abilene, Texas, Roger Colglazier of Cookeville, Tenn., Timothy Colglazier of Ft. Worth, Texas, Martha Ellis of Garland, Texas, Nancy Oliver of Henderson, Tenn., and Gerald's children, Terry Johnson of Corning, Karla Patterson of Madison, Miss., Shelley Trotter of Searcy, Gerald Morgan of Amarillo, Texas, and Jeffrey Morgan of Searcy. Together she and Gerald shared 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Fred Stumbo of Lawrence, Kan., Floyd Stumbo of Lubbock, Texas, Dorothy Bergmark of Aurora, Neb., and Lillian Sullivan of Edmond, Okla.

She treasured her sons and daughters-in-law and cherished many dear friends, in particular Mrs. Paul (Lillie Mae) Erwin and Mr. and Mrs. George Oliver of Searcy.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, the College Church of Christ in Searcy. Burial was in National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kan., at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004.

Powell Funeral Home of Searcy was in charge of the arrangements.

Bettie Jane Dudley

Bettie Jane Dudley, 71, of Piggott died March 29, 2004, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 21, 1932, in Leonard, the daughter of Onnie and Mary Hill Cooper.

She worked as a bookkeeper at Piggott Mortuary-Irby Funeral Home and a lifelong member of the community.

Mrs. Dudley was a member of the Piggott First Baptist Church where she was a member of the church choir and K.C.K.C. choir.

She was preceded in death by her father, Onnie Cooper, on July 10, 1976; and one granddaughter, Sarah Washburn on April 24, 2003.

She is survived by one son, Michael Dudley of Rector; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rebecca Dudley of Piggott, Letitia and David Washburn of Conway and Robin and Jim O'Dell of Pollard; her mother, Mary Cooper of Rector; one brother, Jerry Cooper of Jonesboro; one sister, Euvila Floyd of Sumner, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Dana and Wes Harmon, Micha Dudley, Karissa Dudley, Colton Dudley, Heather O'Dell, Holly O'Dell and Sheri Washburn.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Piggott First Baptist Church with Bro. Loy Culver and Bro. Kevin Murray officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector.

Active pallbearers will be Keith Hill, Barry Hill, Rick Cooper, Jeff Brewer, Bert Lewis and Harry Niewald Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Niewald Sr., Bo Brandon and Wes Harmon.

Visitation will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (today), March 31, 2004, at Irby Funeral Home in Piggott.

Irby Funeral Service of Piggott is in charge of the arrangements.
