William Harold Poe

William Harold Poe, 72, of Greenway, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at the Piggott Community Hospital.

He was born July 7, 1935, in Leachville, Ark., and was the son of the late Mannie and Maudie Youngblood Poe.

He was married to Juanita Roberts on July 2, 1965, and they had one son.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Jim, Richard, Paul, Bud, and Leon Poe; three sisters: Helen Sink, Norma Jean Smart, and May McCann.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Poe of Greenway; his son Darren Poe and wife Elizabeth of Greenway; three grandchildren: Joshua, Kristen, and Emily Poe; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Friday, with funeral services following on Saturday, July 28, in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Boyd Wicker and Richard Tippitt officiating. Burial is in Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway. Pallbearers were Leroy Chavez, Elvis Chavez, James Diddle, Tim Roberts, Allen Smart, Jack McCann, Dean Pemberton, and Brent Spinks. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Lee Ora Raspberry

Lee Ora Raspberry, 87, of Blytheville, died Saturday, July 21, 2007 at her home. She was born to Newt and Lillie Thetford McLeod on Feb. 13, 1920 in Blytheville. She graduated from Blytheville High School in 1938, attended UCA in Conway, and graduated with a degree in dietary supervision in 1980 at the age of 60. She was employed by the Blytheville public school system for 24-years, and retired as lunchroom manager at Fairview Elementary.

She married J.W. Raspberry Sr. on July 28, 1940, and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of the Clear Lake Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, worked in vacation bible school, was a member of the choir and served on numerous committees. She was especially popular among the children of the VBS, as she often provided special refreshments for them.

An avid sports fan, she played basketball and softball, and was a member of the Coca-Cola independent basketball team from Blytheville. She also loved swimming, but her passion was gardening and cooking. She loved to cook for her large family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two brothers: Bob and William McLeod; three sisters: Opal McLeod, Marie Rodery and Glenola Hart; one daughter Madeline Jones; and an infant daughter; one son, Richard Raspberry, Sr.; one grandson, Lewis Richardson, Jr.; one great-grandson and one great granddaughter Emma Grace Raspberry.

Mrs. Raspberry leaves four sons: J.W. "Sonny" Raspberry Jr. and his wife Linda of Hope, Jim Raspberry and his wife Brenda of Conyers, Ga., Kenneth Raspberry and his wife Pam of Bryant and Marty Raspberry and his wife Cindy of Destin, Fla.; three daughters: Glenda "Suzie" Bearden of Steele, Joyce Ann Frye of Indianapolis and Tammy Hodge and her husband Brian of Blytheville. She's also survived by 26 grandchildren, including Richard Raspberry Jr. of Piggott, 32 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 24, at the Cobb Funeral Home in Blytheville with Dr. Coy W. Camp and Dr. Jimmy A. Russell officiating. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery, with Cobb Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Wilma Dean Shelby

Wilma Dean Shelby, 76, died on Thursday, June 21, 2007, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. Shelby was a long time resident of Ferndale, Mich., residing recently in Madison Heights, Mich. She was born in Piggott, to Ted and Alma Johnson on February 27, 1931.

Throughout her lifetime she was a homemaker and a loving babysitter to many children. She loved cooking, reading, traveling, being involved in her church, and spending time at her home in Higgins Lake, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd R. Hering.

Besides her loving husband Glen, she is survived by four children: Neil (Donna) Hering of Berkley, Mich., Sondra Lucas of Royal Oak, Mich., Brenda (Larry) Taylor of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Michael (Tina) Shelby of Mt. Morris, Mich. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amanda Daniels, Colin Hering, Wendy Forsgren, T. J. Lucas, Jennifer Taylor, Thomas Shelby, Beth Taylor, Tasha Burnett, and, nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service to bury Mrs. Shelby's ashes will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 6, at the Piggott Cemetery. The service will be performed by Pastor Evelyn Bernice Gipson. Memorial tributes may be made on-line to the American Diabetes. Association. Arrangements are being handled by Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home in Piggott.

Joseph N. Somers

Joseph N. Somers, 64, of Ozark, Mo., died Sunday, July 22, 2007, in Alaska, doing what he loved best. Joe was a renowned hunter and fisherman, who loved and respected nature and the outdoors.

An entrepreneur from his early 20s, he developed corporations and companies while staying true to his love of lumber, and maintaining the highest industry standards.

His love of flying took him to the Alaskan bush many times over the years to guide large animal hunts. He continued to guide all over the U.S., and enjoyed visiting other countries as well.

Joe's energy, and friendly outgoing personality and generosity, endeared him to countless friends over his lifetime. He was a passionately devoted husband and father. The strength he lived his life by, and the examples he set, will always be there to guide his family.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elvira Somers. He is survived by his wife, June Somers of Ozark, three sons, Jody Somers and wife Luisa of Granville, N.Y., Jasen Somers of Colchester, Conn., and Joshua Somers of Ozark, a daughter, Alyson Somers of Ozark and his mother-in-law, Marie Hillyer of Piggott.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 27, in Springfield, Mo., with Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Pallbearers were: Richard Purcell, Brad Huffman, Bob Blondo, Dan Aubuchon, Richard Taylor and Dave Williams.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 28, at New Hope Cemetery at Pollard, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Memories were shared by family members, and a prayer was offered by Bro. Mark Trout.

Gerald Runyon, Loran Johnson, Dave Culver and Al Selbee served as pallbearers.

Teresa Cavaness

Teresa Cavaness, 47, of Greenway, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at her home in Greenway.

She was born Oct. 5, 1959, in Rector, and was the daughter of Bill and June Bradford Cavaness.

Her father, Bill Cavaness, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons: Adam Morris and wife Rachel of Greenbrier, Ark., and Aaron Morris and wife Katie of Rector; one grandson, Cody Morris; one stepson, Brandon Dalton and one step-granddaughter, Delayna Dalton both of Kennett; mother, June Cavaness of Greenway; grandmother, Esta Cavaness of Piggott; step-mother, Kathy Cavaness of Kennett; three sisters: Cindy McComb and husband Gary of Piggott, Donna Oliver and husband Kendall of Rector, and Kimberly Cavaness and fiancée Danny Miller of Rogers; two brothers: Todd Cavaness and wife Carmen of Greenway, and Tim Cavaness and fiancée Miranda Dalton of Greenway; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Saturday with funeral services following on Sunday, August 5, at the Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home with Joe Payne officiating. Burial is in Mary's Chapel Cemetery in Rector. Pallbearers were Brandon Dalton, J.P. McComb, Bill Cavaness, Shawn Oliver, Mark Morris, and Ty Morris. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Allen Leon Hatcher

Mr. Allen Leon Hatcher, 69, of Astor, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007. Born in Clay County, he moved to Astor from Port Orange, Fla., in 1981. He was a truck driver. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Astor and was a well known country music entertainer. He was Baptist.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Delores Hatcher of Astor; son Alan K. Hatcher, Mount Dora, Fla.; daughters: Valerie Longo, DeLand, Fla., Verla B. Browning, Liberty, Ind., Vicki MacIsaac, DeLand, FL, 6 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 6, at the Beyers Funeral Home Chapel, Astor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 536665, Orlando, Fla. 32853-6665.

Perry Allen Haywood

Perry Allen Haywood, 70, of Cedar Hill, Texas, died July 26, 2007 at the Methodist Hospital in Dallas.

Born June 10, 1937, in Holcomb, he was the son of the late Hershel and Berty Perry Haywood. He was raised by his grandmother Netty and E.W. "Boss" Brown after the death of his mother during childbirth.

He is survived by: his wife, Bonnie Nedeau Haywood; two sons Dean and Dale of Cedar Hill, Texas; three daughters Debbie Morrow and husband Jim of Jonesboro, Theresa Musgrove and husband Mick of Farmington, Mo., Pamela Sterling and husband Joel of New Berg, Oreg.; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and four sisters: Madge Goans of Pontiac, Mich., Linda Beckwith of Arnold, Mo., Shirley Bader and husband John of Hillsboro, Mo., Vicky Allen and husband Chuck of Campbell, Mo., and many nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances.

He was preceded in death by a son, Perry Jr., and brothers Jack and Carrol Haywood.

Perry enlisted in the United States Air Force in June 1955 and retired at Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas. He was stationed in France, England, Vietnam, and flew temporary duties to 19 countries. After retiring, he drove an 18 wheeler, traveling to 47 states. He loved to travel, camp, hunt and fish.

Perry gave his life to the Lord in 1990. He attended church at the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church in Grand Prairie, Texas. Services were held at the church on August 4. Burial will be in Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery with military honors.

Blanche Kemper Russell

Blanche Kemper Russell, 83, of Piggott, died Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at the White River Medical Center in Batesville.

She was born Sept. 17, 1923, in McDougal, and was the daughter of the late George and Era Mae Crews Kemper.

She was a member of the Piney Fork Church of Christ in Evening Shade, Arkansas. Her favorite pastimes were fishing and quilting and at one time she was a member of the Quilting Club in Pollard.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Rufus Calvin Edwards, George Brown, and Charles Russell; two children: Lewis Ray Edwards and Carolyn Jean Brown Settlemoir; two sisters: Nadine Kemper and Delia Kemper Smith; one brother: Charles Kemper; and two sons-in-law: Jack Harrison Frederick and Don Settlemoir.

She is survived by one daughter: Pearl Edwards Frederick of Ash Flat, Arkansas; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Margilene Kemper Wood of Pollard, Maggie Kemper Parrish of Piggott, Loel Kemper Collier of Pocahontas, and Mary Ann Kemper Duplechin of Simmes Port, La.; three brothers: Walter Kemper of West Hills, Calif., Wayne Kemper of Imboden, and Herbert Lee Kemper of Reyno; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Saturday, with funeral services following on Sunday, Aug. 5, in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Loy Culver officiating. Burial is in New Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers were Phillip Bagwell, Jeff Eddy, Ted Frederick, George Lee, Dwight Sharp, and Wayne Smith. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott were in charge of the arrangements.

Christine Gibbs Fields

Christine Gibbs Fields, 85, a native of Rector, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007.

She grew up in Rector, the youngest daughter of Linn and Charlie Gibbs. They were active members of the First Baptist Church.

In 1940, she went to New Orleans to study nursing, receiving her RN degree from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1943.

She had the opportunity to go to Saudi Arabia to work for American-Arabian Oil Co., first as an RN and later as a nurse anesthetist, a degree she earned from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She worked there 25 years.

She enjoyed traveling, visiting 170 countries.

When she retired, she settled in San Diego, where she lived until she died.

Survivors include her nephews, Charles Murphy of Springfield, Mo., and Wayne Collier of Piggott, many cousins and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Her ashes will be spread over her parents' graves at Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector.

Heather Sanders Bowles

Heather Sanders Bowles, 32, of Piggott, died August 4, 2007, in Hardy, Ark.

She was born May 22, 1975 in Clinton, Iowa, and was the daughter of Marion Arthur Sanders and Mary E. Angusich.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, James and Irene Sanders and maternal grandparents, Lavitha and George Angusich.

She is survived by her husband, Jonathan Bowles of Piggott; her son, James Ethan Black; mother, Mary Angusich of Piggott; father, Marion Arthur Sanders of Piggott; sister, Christie Irene Nichols of Kansas City, Mo.; five uncles, Elmer Angusich of Modesto, Calif., George Angusich of Ceres, Calif., Larry Gene Sanders of Tipton, Mo, John David Sanders of Southwest City, Mo, and Cleveland Sanders; four aunts, Joyce Chambers of Chico, Calif., Betty Jean Wilke of Knoxville, Iowa and Shirley Jean Mutchler of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Lilly Laxton of Patterson, Mo.; many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was on Wednesday Aug. 8, with funeral services following in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Davey Winberry officiating. Burial is in Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Goldie Conyers Cooper

Goldie Conyers Cooper, 82, of McDougal, died Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the St. Bernard Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born December 25, 1924 in Pollard, the daughter of the late Raymond B and Elizabeth Millie Causey Conyers.

She was married to Elmer Cooper on September 9, 1941.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; one daughter, Saundra Cooper Brown; three brothers, David Conyers, R. L. Conyers, and Teddy Conyers; one sister, Barbara Conyers.

She is survived by: one daughter, JoAnn McLeskey and husband, Terry of Piggott; two sons, Jack Cooper and wife Gerry and Donnie Cooper and wife Nell both of Pollard; ten grandchildren, Carla Blackwell, Shane McLeskey, Wade Cooper, Daniel Cooper, Tina and Tommy Leonard, Dewayne McCrory, Jill and Steven Pace, Marion and Billy Hardin, Heather and Eric Smith and Jeff Andrews; thirteen great-grandchildren; three brothers: Rawleigh Conyers, Odell Conyers both of Jonesboro, Louis Conyers of Pollard; two sisters: Myrtle Baine of Michigan and Bonnie Garver of Pollard and other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Monday, with funeral services following on Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Loy Culver officiating. Burial will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Pollard. Pallbearers were Jerry Grider, Jeff Andrews, Daniel Cooper, Johnny Mansker, Spencer Permenter and Billy Hardin; Honorary pallbearers were John Dover, Ray White, Doyne Neeley Ronnie Neeley, Donald Grissom, Sonny Rigdon, Robert Welty, Jr. Jackson, Luke Palmer, Dennis Calhoun, Bill Cosby, Fred Gross and Todd Couch. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Earl Hopple

Richard Earl Hopple, 68, of St. Francis, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2007, in Ocala, Fla.

He was born April 29, 1939, in Lewistown, Penn., and was the son of the late Earl Herbert (Jerry) and Helen Marie McConathey Hopple.

He is survived by four children: Bobbie F. Hopple of Ocala, Richard Earl Hopple Jr. of Seagrove, N. C., Roy Earl Hopple of Silver Springs, Fla., and Rene Frazier of Malden; ten grandchildren: Taylor, Dylan, Andrew, Payten, Amanda Dawn, Michael Paul, Minnie, Molly Elizabeth, Ian, and William; four sisters: Sue Alexandra of Olds, Iowa, Judy Schiffer of Newport News, Va., Debbie Davino of Florida, and Peggy Gates of Olds, Iowa; ex-wife, Mary (Peggy) L. Hopple of St. Francis; and many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Friday, Aug. 10, with funeral services immediately following in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Davey Winberry officiating. Burial is in Gravel Hill Cemetery in St. Francis. Pallbearers were Jerry Blackwell, Dale Pence, Gerald Black, Charles Brawner, Ronnie Lawrence, Andrew Pence, and Anthony Settlemoir. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.
