Sarah O. Hosea

Sarah O. Hosea, 89, of Piggott, died Monday, August 13, 2007 at the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott.

She was born May, 21, 1918 in Moody, Mo. the daughter of the late Frank and Maude Lewey Creek.

She was united in marriage to Ollie O. Hosea May 25, 1935. To this union six children were born.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie in 1988; infant twins in 1945, two great grandchildren; two brothers; Gerald and Frankie Creek, and one sister; El Rhea Neeley.

She is survived by: three daughters; Melba Purl, Rosemary West and Geraldine Haywood all of Piggott; one son, Ronnie Hosea of St. Francis; thirteen grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Edith Jo McDaniel of Marion, Ill.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with funeral services to be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Gary Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the Holcomb Cemetery near Pollard. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott is in charge of the arrangements.

Velma Katherine Trafford

Velma Katherine Trafford, 92, formerly of Piggott, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Leesburg, Va.

She was born February 16, 1915, in Stella, Ark., to the late Troy and Effie "Felts" Davidson. She was married on July 1, 1939, to William "Earl" Trafford, who preceded her in death in 1979. An area resident for fifty years, she was a house wife, a Sunday School teacher, an active member of the Eastern Star, and was of the First Methodist faith.

She will be sadly missed by her son, Kenneth Trafford and wife Karen of Hamilton, Va.; one granddaughter Teresa McClellan and husband Gene of San Diego, Calif.; one grandson, Kevin Trafford and wife Lynette of Bellevue, Idaho; two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Christopher McClellan; one great-great grandson, Ashton McClellan; two brothers, Troy Hall Davidson and wife Jessie Lynn of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Troy Felts Davidson of Melrose, Fla.; two sisters, Ruth Howell-Andrus and husband Walter of Seguin, Texas and Ruby Sisk of Dripping Springs, Texas. Many other family members including cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband William Earl Trafford; her parents Troy and Effie "Felts" Davidson; two brothers Ray and Tommy Davidson and one sister, Veda Wilburn.

Visitation was Sunday Aug. 19, with funeral services following at the Irby Funeral Home Chapel in Piggott with Reverend Charles Cooper officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery.

Pallbearers were, David Finley, Howard R. Spicer, Mark Davidson, Troy Davidson, III, Tim McCluskey, Mark McCluskey, and Matt McCluskey. Honorary Pallbearers were Jack Byrd and Wayne Spicer.

Irby Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Hampton

Robert G. Hampton, 78, of Piggott died Aug. 27, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlotte Hardcastle Hampton; daughters, Melida Baureis of Jonesboro and Charlotte Wilhite of Piggott; son-in-law, Blane Wilhite; grandsons, Christopher Shane Alan Morris of Gainesville, Fla.; Richard Matthew Baureis of Jonesboro, John Erik Baureis of Little Rock; brother, Ralph Hampton, Jr. of Russellville; brother-in-law, Tommy Hardcastle and wife Nancy of Piggott; sister-in-law, Thelma Hopkins and husband John of St. Louis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by a son Robert Alan Hampton.

Visitation is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Piggott. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott is in charge of the arrangements.

Wilburn H. "Arkie" Whitaker

Wilburn H. "Arkie" Whitaker, 88, of Vassar, Mich., died June 15, 2007 at his daughter's residence. He was born on May 23, 1919 in Pollard, the son of the late Henry C. and Ada (Vincent) Whitaker.

On June 22, 1937, he married Erma Pearl Lingle and shortly thereafter moved to Michigan.

Whitaker owned and operated Arkies Garage in Millington with his son for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing and especially attending to his garden.

Surviving family include his wife of 70 years, Erma; his son, Delane; daughters, Barbara (Ray) Crandall and Ermazine Woodward; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons; and his sister, Carmaleda Sutto.

Whitaker was preceded in death by his son, James; grandsons, Daniel Crandall and Aaron Whitaker; his brothers John and Cecil; and sisters, Ha Jennings Tucker, Opal Corder and Margaret Salem.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 19 at the Millington Baptist Church, pastor James Sheldrake officiating. Burial followed at Pine Grove Cemetery in Arbela Township.

Contributions may be made to Millington Baptist Church.

Judy Anne Niederkorn

Judy Anne Niederkorn, 48, of Rector, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, in the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis.

She was born Dec. 7, 1958, in Detroit, Mich., and was the daughter of the late Marvin and Eleanor Mitchell Adkinson.

She was married to Frank Niederkorn on Oct. 30, 1982, and to this union two daughters were born.

She was preceded in death by her parents Marvin and Eleanor; two brothers, David and Jimmy Adkinson; and father--in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Tulita Niederkorn.

She is survived by her husband Frank Niederkorn of Rector; two daughters, Patricia Castillo and husband Julio of San Angelo, Texas, and Sarah Niederkorn of Rector; two grandchildren, Aiden and "soon-to-be" Kaitlyn; step-father, Doyle Duke of Memphis; two step-sisters, Judy Galordi and Shirley Vescovo of Germantown, Tenn.; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Saturday, Aug. 25, at Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home in Piggott. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements. The family request memorials to be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Grace E. Gordon

Grace E. Gordon, 80, of Piggott died Nov. 1, 2007, at the Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Piggott, and was the daughter of the late Walter William and Cecil Mae Carter Wiedeman.

She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Piggott.

She was united in marriage to John W. "Pete" Gordon on May 17, 1947. The couple had four children.

Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanene Moore, and two brothers, Richard Wiedeman and Phillip Wiedeman.

She is survived by her husband, John W. "Pete" Gordon of Piggott; four children, John Richard Gordon and wife Arvalla of Pollard, Phillip E. Gordon and wife Peggy of Paragould, Joe Robert Gordon and wife Sharon of Bay, and Tammy Cashion and husband Travis of Piggott; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Julie Wiedeman of Paragould, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were held Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at the First Christian Church in Piggott with Duane Dutka and Alan Vaughn officiating. Burial was in Piggott Cemetery. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Melvin Johnson

Melvin Johnson, son of the late Willis Johnson and Pearl Byrd Johnson, was born July 13, 1937, in Piggott. He died Nov. 3, 2007, at his home in Jordan, Ark., at the age of 70.

Johnson was retired from the St. Louis Carpenters Union Local 2214. He worked many years for Goodwin Construction in St. Louis, constructing bridges and sewer systems.

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Johnson was united in marriage to Sandra Lee on Sept. 9, 1994, in Melbourne, Ark. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Jordan Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Sandra Johnson of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Carol Johnson of Mountain Home; two daughters, Rhonda Nolan of El Dorado, and Julie Johnson of Mountain Home; three sisters; four half-sisters; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, two half-sisters, a brother and three half-brothers.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Hand Cemetery under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Calico Rock. Pallbearers were Bill Yarbro, Jason Yarbro, Mike Pasley, Dave Pasley, David East and Phillip McFarland.

Lena Renard

Leta Renard, 80, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Piggott, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at the Monticello House in Jackson, Mo.

She was born June 20, 1927, in Piggott, and was the daughter of the late Harlan and Minnie Mae Holifield Kirk.

She was united in marriage to Francis "Mutt" Renard on Jan. 7, 1950. The couple had two children.

She was preceded in death by her son, Adrian Renard, and eight brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her husband, Francis "Mutt" Renard of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Faith True and husband Dale of Cape Girardeau; a grandson, Adrian True of St. Louis; a granddaughter, Ashley True of Cape Girardeau, and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were set for Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, in New Hope Cemetery in Pollard, with Steve Francis officiating. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Ernestine L. "Shepard" Shirley, Dees

Ernestine L. Dees, 88, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., formerly of Piggott, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 2, 1919, in Kennett, to the late John Edwards and Nora Jane "Brannon" Shepard.

She was united in marriage to the late James Shirley in 1942. The couple had two children. She was married to Herbert Dees in 1952 and had a very happy marriage until his death in 1982.

Preceding her in death were her husbands, James Shirley and Herbert Dees; her parents, John and Nora Shepard; two brothers, Doyle and Bill Shepard, two sisters, Marie Milburn and Betty Ellen Carver; a grandson, Shane Shirley, and a granddaughter, Micaela Briseno.

She is survived by a son, Jimmy Shirley and his wife Sue of Arnold, Mo., a daughter, Judy Kay Briseno and her husband Art of Murfreesboro; a sister, Della Wilburn of Turlock, Calif., a brother, Melvin Shepard and his wife Enola of Piggott; five grandchildren, Matthew Briseno, Jason Shirley, Cindy Graves, Wendy Franklin and Shannon Pulliam; 13 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was baptized as one of Jehovah's witnesses on Dec 19, 1961. She loved her family and friends. If she was visiting at your door to discuss the Bible, or if you came to her home she always made you feel welcome.

Memorial Services were held Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Irby Funeral Home chapel, Piggott, with Steve Oliver officiating.

Irby Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Ridgeway

Bessie Ridgeway, 86, formerly of Piggott, died Nov. 8, 2007, in Clearwater, Fla.

She was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Piggott, and was the daughter of the late Curtis and Mary Gossett Brady.

She and her husband, Earl P. Ridgeway, returned to their Piggott roots, from Detroit, Mich., after their retirement in 1980. They were active members of Calvary Baptist Church in Piggott.

Mrs. Ridgeway was preceded in death by her husband Earl, and her son, Earl Ray Ridgeway of Grand Rapids, Mich.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharron and her husband, Greg Toney of Clearwater, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Helen Ridgeway of Grand Rapids, Mich.; her grandchildren, Aubree Gilmore of Clearwater, Fla., Carrie Randall and Bryan Ridgeway, both of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Randy Ridgeway of Piggott, and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home. The funeral, also at Hoggard and Sons, will be officiated by former pastor, Rev. Mike Chadwick, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007. Interment will be in Piggott Cemetery.

Eleanor Emmaline Lacy Underwood

Mrs. Eleanor Emmaline Lacy Underwood of Piggott died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell, at the age of 100 years, one month, and 27 days.

Her death resulted from complications of a fall on Sept. 11, one day after her 100th birthday, in which she broke her right femur in four places.

Mrs. Underwood was born in Campbell, Mo., on Sept. 10, 1907, the second of three daughters of James R. Lacy and Lula B. McElyea Lacy. She spent most of her childhood in Campbell, but her family also lived in Fulton, Mo., while her older sister Lena attended the Missouri School for the Deaf. After finishing school in Campbell, Eleanor moved to St. Louis, where she worked several years for Century Electric Company.

She moved to Piggott in 1942 when she married John Underwood, a widower with four young children for whom she became "Mama."

Mrs. Underwood lived in Piggott until 2003, when she moved to the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell, following a fall in her home that prevented further independent living.

Mrs. Underwood was raised in the Baptist Church, but after moving to Piggott, she joined the First United Methodist Church of Piggott, the church home of the Underwood family. She was a member of that church for over 50 years.

Mrs. Underwood was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Lena Lacy Forrest and Arwillia Lacy Dodd; by her husband, John D. Underwood; and by a child, Gloria Jean Underwood, who died at birth.

She is survived by her four Underwood children and their spouses, Peggy Underwood Ballard and husband Jack Ballard of Piggott; John D. Underwood, Jr., and wife Sandra of Denison, Texas; Beverly Underwood Irby and husband Bill Irby of Piggott; and Gary Underwood and wife Shelia Ross of Austin, Texas.

Mrs. Underwood is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Paula Ballard Roberts of Van Buren, David Ballard of Piggott, Steven Underwood of Denison, Texas, Cynthia Underwood Lyons of Lewisville, Texas, Laura Underwood Cichowski of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Gail Irby Robinson of Ashland, Ky., Lynae Irby Cole of Memphis, Allison Irby Jacobs of Fort Smith, Alice Underwood of New York City, Travis Underwood of San Antonio, Texas and Riley Underwood of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 9, at the Piggott Cemetery, where Mrs. Underwood was buried next to her husband and daughter. The Rev. Charles Cooper of First Untied Methodist Church of Piggott officiated. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Piggott or the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell.
