Angela Marie Vinson

Angela Marie Vinson, 27, of Pollard, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.

She was born Aug. 24, 1976, in Poplar Bluff, the daughter of Melvin and Pamela Vinson Baker.

She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Piggott. She was also a member of the Eagles Lodge #3730 and attended Twin Rivers and Poplar Bluff High Schools.

She is survived by her parents; daughter, Tehya Tinsley; two brothers, Stephen Gray Jr. of Piggott and Jonothan Baker of Pollard; grandparents, Donald and Jane Vinson of Kaddo Gap, Ark., Rose Vinson of Poplar Bluff, Ida Mae Gray of Rolla, Mo., Ross and Ann Reagan of Piggott; special friend, Shelley Reagan of Piggott; two aunts, Tina Payne of Poplar Bluff, and Debra Vinson of Malden; one uncle, Duane Vinson of Poplar Bluff; five nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 27, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Kevin Murray officiating.

Bradshaw Funeral Homes, Inc. in Malden was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred L. Holmes

Mildred L. Holmes, 80, of Birmingham, Ala., formerly of Rector, died Monday, May 31, 2004.

She was a member of the Brewster Road Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and James Stevenson of Trussville, Ala.; one son, Paul Holmes of Trussville; one brother, George Linam of Rector; two grandsons, Paul Seegraves and wife Heather of Piggott and Phillip Holmes of Homewood, Ala., and great-grandchildren, Emilee Seegraves and Shawn Hudson Seegraves.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, June 2) at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East with Rev. Eric House, minister of Brewster Road Baptist Church, officiating. Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home of Trussville is in charge of arrangements.

Vergilee "Vergie" Binkley

Vergilee "Vergie" Binkley, 78, of Flint, Mich., died Friday May 21, 2004, at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich, Mich.

She was born in Piggott on Aug. 3, 1925, daughter of Riley and Lottie (Pardon) Book.

She married James L. Binkley on October 31, 1942.

She was a member of the Flint Garden Club and Shriners Hillbilly Clan #55, where she was the Possum Queen in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two granddaughters, Angela (Binkley) Burk and Colleen Bolduc; her parents; sister, Edith Simpson; and brother, John Book.

She is survived by five children, Linda Sue Bolduc, Larry Binkley and wife, Claudia, Mike Binkley and wife, Terry, Melba Wilson and husband, Paul, and Denise "Dee Dee" Galonska and husband, Mike; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Ethel Hampton of Memphis, Margie Jones of Rogers, Ark., J.B. Book of Piggott, Doilous Book of Piggott, Ray Book of Piggott, Fay Pridmore of Campbell, Texas, and Louise Harmon of Kennett; Several nieces, nephews and special friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at the Swartz Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Dumbrille officiating. Burial was in Meadowview Memorial Gardens.

Those interested may make contributions to Shriners Children's Hospital or Genesys Hospice Care Center.

Genevieve Goodrich

Genevieve Goodrich, 82, of Kennett, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at her home.

She was born January 18, 1922, in Marion, Ill., daughter of the late Guy and Virgie Latta Hayes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luke Goodrich; one brother, Dewey Hayes; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her three daughters; Mozelle Beaver of Kennett, JeanE Martin of Kennett, Leta Banther of Sullivan, Ind.; four step children, Nick Goodrich of St. Louis, Virginia Luebbers of St. Louis, Mike Goodrich of Mountain Home, and Barbara Goodrich of St. Louis; three brothers, Bill Hayes of Westminster, Calif., Randal Hayes of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Jimmie Hayes of Sullivan, Ind.; two sisters, Wyegema Russell of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Maxine Hall of Kennett; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; six step- grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 3, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Bud Evans officiating.

Burial was in New Hope Cemetery in Pollard with Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Richard Hovis, Carl Goodrich, Danny Davis, Ken Laffoon, Bob Hall and Mike Goodrich.

Jessie Denver Kitchens

Jessie Denver Kitchens, 86, of Poplar Bluff, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at his home.

He was born June 22, 1917, son of the late Solomon James and Minnie May McFerron Kitchens in Leora, Mo.

He was a sailor in the U.S. Navy and served in several stations, including Guantanimo Bay, Puerto Rico and Japan. He was in Okinawa when a Kamikaze pilot destroyed his ship. He retired from the John J. Pershing Medical Center.

He married Marjorie Brandon on Oct. 12, 1978, and resided in Poplar Bluff until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bammie King; and three brothers, Floyd, David and Virgil.

He is survived by his wife of the home; one sister, Peggy Mitchell and husband, Ralph; several nephews and nieces. Among those who were especially close are, Ann and Jerry Winkler, Jerry and Betsy Kitchen of St. Louis, and Judge Steven and Diane Mitchell of Dexter.

Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at the Piggott Cemetery with Rev. Donald Richmann officiating. Irby Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.

Joe Nichols Jr.

Joe Nichols Jr., 79, of Piggott died Tuesday June 2, 2004, at his home.

He was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Piggott, son of the late Joe A. and Lora Lewis Nichols.

He married Anna Lee Rodery on Nov. 20, 1948. They had two children.

Nichols served as a master sergeant in the 101st airborne division in World War II. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Gary Nichols and wife, Marilyn, of Piggott; one daughter, Gayla Donner and husband, David, of Piggott; two grandsons, Brad Riddle and wife, Michelle, of St. Francis, and Rob Nichols and wife, Christy, of Sikeston; one granddaughter, Erica Harris and husband, Wade, of Piggott; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Cooper Harris and Caleb Riddle; two brothers, Hershel Nichols of Piggott, and Jimmy Nichols of Warsaw, Ky.; and one sister, Laurene Skidmore of Beebe.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Rev. Charles Cooper officiating.

Burial was at Gravel Hill Cemetery in St. Francis with Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Ira Causey, Keith Woolverton, Kirk Nichols, Ted McComb, Brett Baker and Rick Rodery.

Kalman Julius Katona

Kalman Julius Katona, 77, of Barnhill Camp, Corning, died Saturday, June 2004 at the Piggott Community Hospital.

He was born June 25, 1926, in Dearborn, Mich., son of the late Julius and Julia Katona.

He is survived by a companion of several years, Dwila Pipkens of Corning, and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 7, at Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway, with Kevin Murray officiating.

Pallbearers were Charles Ward, Bob Ward, Sam Ward, Larry Davis, Bill Tutor and Jeffrey Prueitt.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.

Suzanne Phillips

Suzanne Phillips, 60, of Piggott died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in the Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born Jan. 28, 1944, in Owosso, Mich., daughter of the late James and Edith Dowell Martin.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom Martin, Jack Martin and Jim Martin.

She is survived by one son, Jeff Martin of Rector; three grandchildren, Nicole Martin, Jeffery Martin and Hope Martin; one sister, Phyliss Fagan of Chesaning, Mich.; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, in the Nimmons Cemetery, with Tim Fagan officiating.

Burial followed in the Nimmons Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brian Belcher, Tim Green, Jeffery Martin, Brian Whitten, Eddie Todd and Darrell Calhoun.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Leslie Bailey

Leslie Bailey, 79, of Greenway died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in the Poplar Bluff Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

He was born Jan. 16, 1925, in Piggott, the son of the late Clifford Weldon and Icy Dora Gregory Bailey.

He was united in marriage to Betty Roden on Jan. 28, 1948.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Aldena Long and Welda B. Haley.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bailey of Greenway; one sister, Wenona Whitlock of Russellville; three brothers, Wendell Bailey of Kenosha, Wis., Doyne Bailey of St. Louis and Ledell Bailey of Searcy; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Thursday, June 10, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Ledell Bailey and Tim Carter officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Cemetery at Greenway. Pallbearers were Bill Huff, Hardin Hill, Leslie Bailey Jr., Dave Finley, Larry Copeland and Alan Haywood.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Alma Davis Bowden

Alma Davis Bowden, 70, of Salem, Oreg., died Friday, May 21, 2004, after a long illness.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1933, in Pollard, daughter of the late Clyde and Wilma Oxley Davis.

She is survived by her husband Robert L. Bowden; one daughter, Barbara Pennington of Denver, Colo.; one son, Lt. Col. Robert L. Bowden III and wife, Diane; two grandchildren, Lauren and Mychael of Fredericksburg, Va.; one step-son, Steve; four step-grandchildren of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Norma Davis McGough of Phoenix and Pat Davis Ludwick of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif; one brother, Ronald A. Davis of Portland, Oreg.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Keizer Community Church of Keizer, Oreg.

Mary Louella Matheney

Mary Louella Matheney, 81, of Marmaduke died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at her home.

She was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Melbourne, Ark., daughter of the late William Thomas and Allie Maude Freeman Langston.

She was united in marriage to Olan Wayne Matheney on October 12, 1941. They had three children.

She was a homemaker and worked as a teacher's aide in the Piggott School District. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Tommy Matheney; three brothers, Earnest, W.T., and Alvin (Bud) Langston; one sister, Rita Dale; two grandchildren, Sherry Matheney and Michael Morrison; and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Jean Morrison and Darlene Moore, both of Marmaduke; two sisters, Minnie Tanner of Piggott and Marie Strickland of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Cornell Langston of Bakersfield, Calif.; six grandchildren, Ricky Matheney of Piggott, Jackie Peck of St. Louis, Angela Stanfill of Marmaduke, Keith Morrison of Jonesboro, Lisa Woolery of Paragould and David Moore of Marmaduke; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday), June 16, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with C.O. Evans and Arvil Hill officiating.

Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Skylar Matheney, Shawn Matheney, Barrett Stanfill, Tom Woolery, Kenny Vangilder and Macky Moore.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.
