Marie Haywood Elder

Marie Haywood Elder, 89, of Jonesboro died Monday, May 16, 2005, in the General Baptist Nursing Home at Campbell.

She was born on Dec. 31, 1915, in Piggott, the daughter of the late Louis (Sam) and Susan Bradford Haywood.

She was united in marriage to Vilas H. Elder on Feb. 4, 1935. They had three children.

She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Piggott, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, moderator of the Presbyterian Women and was a member of the church choir. She served on the Piggott Library Board.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vilas H. Elder; three sisters, Ethel Parker, Myrtle Edwards and Mae Clayton; and one brother, Ethridge Haywood.

She is survived by two daughters, Faith Elder Welshans of Little Rock and Hope Elder Spragins of Batesville; one son, Vilas H. Elder and wife, Paulette, of Jonesboro; seven grandchildren, Brad Welshans and wife, Laura, and Beth Welshans and friend, Frank Wood, all of Little Rock, Kelly Marie Purtee and husband, Steve, Clint Parton and wife, Patti, Tahnya Price and husband, Danny, Amanda Waln and husband, Justin, all of Jonesboro, Melanie Caldwell and husband, Vince, of Fort Worth, Texas; 10 great-grandchildren, Wesley Elder Welshans, Laura Marie Purtee, Rachel Purtee, Mallory Parton, Aaron Price, Blake Price, Caleb Price, Parker Waln, Christin Caldwell and Brett Thomas; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (today), May 18, 2005, in the First Presbyterian Church in Piggott with Rev. Jack Cole and Rev. Robert Norvell officiating. Burial will follow in the Piggott Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Brad Welshans, Clint Parton, Steve Purtee, Danny Price, Justin Waln and Wesley Elder Welshans. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Roeder, Jim Seal, John Harlan, Lloyd Russell, Vince Caldwell, Pharis Edwards, Ray Hogan and James King.

Memorials may be made to the Piggott Presbyterian Church, 210 West Cherry, Piggott, or the Piggott Public Library, 361 West Main Street, Piggott.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Darrell Delaine Davis

Darrell Delaine Davis, 71, died April 14, 2005, in Glendale, Ariz.

He retired from Allied Signal in 1991. He was a licensed motor mechanic and an Army Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floye Davis and Elisha Earl Davis.

He is survived by his wife, Ginny; his brother, Gaylon Davis and wife, Betty, of Patterson, Mo.; his sister, Emma Thompson and husband, Danny, of Poplar Bluff. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Pamela Conrad and her husband, Jerry, and grandsons, Cody and Tanner Conrad. He was a wonderful stepfather and will be missed by his step-children and their families, Steven Bowden and wife, Cheri, Chrissy Hunter, Michael Pettet and wife, Jamie, and Sammy Pettet.

He is also survived by his uncle, Ezra Davis of Campbell; an aunt, Virginia Crews of Piggott; three newphews, Mitch Davis, Barry Thompson and Kerry Thompson; and one niece, Kelly Stanfill.

Memorial services were held on April 19, 2005, at Best Funeral Services Chapel in Peoria, Ariz., with Pastor James Hayes officiating.

Dot Dees Cribbs

Dot Dees Cribbs, 71, of St. Louis died Monday, May 16, 2005, in the Town and Country Healthcare in St. Louis.

She was the daughter of Lloyd and Zelma Pearl Cullum Dees.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse L. Cribbs; and her father, Lloyd Dees.

She is survived by six children, Teresa, Cindy, Douglas, Gina, Tracy and Dana; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her mother, Pearl; four sisters, Doris Erwin, Mickie Besserman and JoAnn Oliver of Piggott and Barbara Sutfin of Brookland; and several other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held at 1 p.m. and a funeral service was held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at Hoffmeister Colonial Chapel in St. Louis. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2005, in the Piggott Cemetery in Piggott with Mike Book officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Randy Besserman, Rodney Besserman, Jeffery Reeves, Greg Reeves, Janson Reeves and David Reeves. Honorary pallbearers were Aaron Oliver and Noel Sutfin.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the graveside services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Donald Jay Elliott

Donald Jay Elliott, 69, of Ocean Springs, Miss., died Sunday, April 24, 2005, in Biloxi, Miss.

He was born Aug. 19, 1935, in Boydsville, the son of Thelma Wilson Elliott Banks and the late Virgil Elliott and grandson of the late Alva and Rosetta Hall Wilson.

He was a Vietnam Veteran and retired after four years in the Army and 23 years in the Air Force. He worked with computers after retiring from the Armed Forces.

In addition to his father and his grandparents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Elliott.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Ocean Springs, Miss.; his mother, Thelma Banks of Paragould; three sons, Mike Elliott of Washington state, Bill of Nevada and Bob of Korea; one sister, Carolyn Gugott of Arnold, Mo.; and four step-children, Ron, Matt, Eric and Becky, all of Ocean Springs, Miss.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, with Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home of Biloxi, Miss., in charge of the arrangements. Burial with full military honors followed in the Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, Miss.

Alma Gross

Alma Gross, 80, of Pollard, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, in the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell.

She was born April 4, 1925, in Pollard, the daughter of the late Thomas Clay and Nancy Baker Permenter.

She married Fred Gross on March 20, 1945. They had one son.

She was converted at a very early age and served the Lord all of her life. She belonged to New Hope Baptist Church for around 70 years. She taught Sunday school for many years. She loved gospel music, played the piano and organ at churches for around seventy years and played for different quartets and singing conventions throughout Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Gross; one son, Tom Gross and wife, Betty; one granddaughter, Kristen Gross; one sister, Wanda Brent, all of Pollard and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Loy Culver and Charles Carrens officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery in Pollard. Active pallbearers were Sonny Johnson, Jerry Grider, Gary Conley, Nick Yount, Wayne Henley and Luke Palmer. Honorary Pallbearers were Glen Yount, James Huggins, Van Rodery, Ed Wood, Melvin Holifield, John Dover, Bob Palmer, Slim Braden, John Taylor and Grover Baker.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Luther Hensley

Luther Hensley, 80, of Memphis died Monday, May 16, 2005, in the St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.

He was born March 31, 1925, in Nimmons, the son of the late Drew and Lilly Frances Goodman Hensley.

He was united in marriaage to Jewell Crews on Jan. 26, 1943. They had four children.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jerry Lynn Hensley; two brothers, Elmer Lee Hensley and James Herman Hensley; and three sisters, Imogene Williams, Nina Hampton and Wanda Bolton.

He is survived by his wife, Jewell Hensley of Memphis; four children, Peggy Bray and Jerry Hensley, both of Memphis, Donna Todd of Jackson, Mo., and Linda Tucker of Nashville; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2005, in the Bethel General Baptist Church at Patterson, Ark., with James Henry Dortch and Bill Ward officiating. Burial followed in the Nimmons Cemetery in Nimmons. Pallbearers were H.D. Samples, Bud Taylor, Gary Redmon, Tommy Redmon, Bill Ward and Clifton Carter.

Betty Sue (Parker) Sharp

Betty Sue (Parker) Sharp, 67, of Toledo, Ohio, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2005, in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Aug. 19, 1937, in Portageville, Mo., the daughter of Willis Parker and Joy Sherfield.

She worked for Swanton Ohio Health Care and retired in May of 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her dad, Willis Parker; and a daughter, Christine Sherman.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Denise Sharp and Curtis and Teresa Sharp; two daughters and one son-in-law, Joy Hass of Toledo, Ohio, and Susie and Paul Murphy of Dyersburg, Tenn.; her mother, Joy Sherfield; one sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Leland Dees; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one nephew, Terry Dees and wife, Judith; a great-niece, Autumn Turner and husband, Vance; and one great-great-nephew, Charlie Turner, of Piggott.

Funeral services were held at Neville Funeral Home in Toledo, Ohio, on March 1, 2005. Burial was private.

Imogene Ort

Imogene Ort, 83, of St. Francis died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at her home.

She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen Ray Stewart and Mary Cox Stewart; and four brothers, Howard, Marion, Eugene and Delaine Stewart.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Ort of the home; two sons, Jual Ort of St. Francis and Donny Ort and wife, Debbie, of Sikeston; two sisters, Lorene Edwards and Verna Lee Gibson, both of Piggott; one brother, Finis Stewart of Florida; three grandchildren, Rusty Ort, Deanna Phelps and Matthew Ort; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Irby Funeral Home of Piggott. Burial followed in Gravel Hill Cemetery at St. Francis. Pallbearers were W.C. Carman, Fred Ort, Jimmy Langley, Jim Duty, Larry Boyer and Kenneth Ort.

Irby Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Lily Marcella Hardin

Lily Marcella Hardin, 88, of Qulin, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at her residence.

Mrs. Hardin was born Nov. 8, 1916, in Piggott. She was a homemaker and a member of the Qulin Church of Christ.

On Dec. 1, 1937, she married Charles J. Hardin in Detroit, Mich. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1968.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Lockie Garner, Roxie Thompson, Naoma Bare, Elacy Wright and Lubie Adams.

She is survived by three sons, Charles Darnel Hardin, Daryl Hardin, both of Qulin, and Dwight Hardin of St. Louis; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ava Wright of Cape Girardeau.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2005, at the Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff with Mr. Freeman Mahan officiating. Burial followed in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

Lois Silas

Lois Silas, 80, of Piggott, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, in the Baptist Hospital at Little Rock.

She was born May 22, 1925, in Pollard, the daughter of the late Cave Monroe and Margaret Ellen Lingle Evans.

She was united in marriage to A.C. Silas on Jan. 23, 1947. They had two daughters.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Evans; and three sisters, Beatrice Poole, Ruth Crews and Joyce Brown.

She is survived by her husband, A.C. Silas of Piggott; two daughters, Deborah Cooper of Little Rock and Susan Bowman and husband, Jim, of Greenway; four grandchildren, Chris Cooper, Jimmy Bowman, Richard Hardin and Lealani Kilbreath; five great-grandchildren, Colton, Kali, Morgan, Keifer and Joshua; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Rev. Ray Crews officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chris Cooper, Jimmy Bowman, Richard Hardin, Aldon Kilbreath, Paul Green and Billy Seals.
