DeWitt F. Carman

DeWitt F. Carman, 83, of Piggott, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Murphy Health Care.

He was born April 21, 1921, in Peach Orchard, Ark., the son of the late Willard and Carrie Culp Carman.

He married LaVerne Gauf on May 24, 1942. They had two daughters.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Shelly McKenney; one sister, Neoma Peace; and two brothers, Dale Carman and Amel Carman.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Carman; two daughters, Laura Sue McKenney of Blytheville and Shirley Carman of Piggott; two grandchildren, Kelly McKenney of Gosnell and Johnny Ray McKenney of Beale Air Force Base, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Karli, Kaylee and Korey; one sister, Shelva Jean Grindstaff of Dexter; three brothers, W.C. Carman and A.L. Carman, both of St. Francis, and Harold Carman of Vallejo, Calif.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Jerry Morgan officiating. Burial followed in the Gravel Hill Cemetery in St. Francis. Pallbearers were Junior Haywood, John Brawner, Lelan Hendrix, Gordon Miller, Brian Rose and David Ballard.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Arvin Edwin Skidmore
Thursday, October 7, 2004

Arvin Edwin Skidmore, 81, of Beebe, Ark., died Oct. 1, 2004, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 23, 1922, to Milo and Pearl Skidmore in Piggott.

He graduated from Piggott High School as valedictorian and married Laurene Nichols on Sept. 7, 1946.

An Air Force Veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a farmer for twenty years and retired from ABF in 1995. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, a Mason and a Shriner.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Skidmore is survived by his wife, Laurene Skidmore; two daughters, Myra Skidmore Cobb (Jim) of Rolla, Mo., and Teresa Skidmore of Maumelle, Ark.; grandchildren Jim Ed Cobb (Sherri) of Nampa, Idaho, and Jason Cobb (Cherie Beth) of Crystal City, Mo.; one brother, Harrison Skidmore (Cora May) of Piggott; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Beebe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimers Association, One St. Vincent Circle, Little Rock, AR, or a charity of one's choice.

Wimla Doris Walkton South
Thursday, October 14, 2004

Wilma Doris Walton South, 77, of Lake City died Tuesday night, Oct. 5, 2004, at her home.
Born in Black Oak on Dec. 14, 1926, she lived in various places following her marriage to Ray South on Aug. 5, 1951, most recently in Piggott until she and her husband retired and returned to Lake City. She was a graduate of Black Oak High School (Class of 1944) and Arkansas State University. She worked in the Black Oak Post Office until 1952, and taught elementary school in Piggott for 13 years until 1985. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake City and a member of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Levi and Nancy Walton; and two brothers, Buel and Lloyd Walton.

Survivors include her husband, Ray South; three daughters, Dr. Karen Moustafa of Fort Wayne, Ind., Lisa South and husband Mike Coonan of Grapevine, Texas, and Susan Cheesman and husband Allen of Pine Bluff, Ark.; and four grandchildren, Mark Kemp of Springfield, Mo., and William, Michelle, and Melanie Cheesman of Pine Bluff.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in the Langford-Bookout Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Miller. Burial followed in Jonesboro Memorial Park. Active pallbearers included Gary and Teddy Qualls, Kim Barker, Eddy Caldwell, Lynn Smith and Greg James. Honorary pallbearers included Leo Caldwell, Harold Barker, Vonda Vaunda Bowers, Charles Bowers and Jackie Williams. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

David Ethridge Monroe

David Ethridge Monroe, 32, of Houston, died Sept. 26, 2004.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1972, in Blytheville.

He is survived by his son, Christopher; fiancée, Elly Trickett; parents, Diane Woods Cowley and husband, Paul, and Ronnie Monroe and wife, Adrienna; sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Mike Kelly; brother, Cameron Monroe; nieces, Christina and Heather Kelley; great-grandmother, Bessie Bare; and many loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Klein Funeral Home-Champion Forest in Houston.

Peggy J. Hutson Wellman

Peggy J. Hutson Wellman died on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in Branson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Douglas Wellman; and one daughter, Judy A. Koch.

She is survived by two daughters, Vicki Enloe of Reeds Spring, Mo., and Linda Harmon of Overland Park, Kans.; one son, David Wellman of St. Louis; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at Stumpff's Funeral Home in Kimberling City, Mo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kimberling Area Library, P.O. Box 730, Kimberling City, MO, 65686.

Eddie R. Beck

Eddie R. Beck, 69, of Rockford, Ill., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at home in the loving care of his family.

He was born June 26, 1935, in Peach Orchard, Ark., the son of Alvin and Ruby Stormes Beck. He married Ovedia I. Starling on March 30, 1957, in Hernando, Miss.; she died in 2000.

Beck was the owner and operator of Beck's Janitorial Service and Beck's Auto Sales. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Ruby Stormes Beck; two brothers, Charles and Rolland; and one sister, Lillian.

Survivors include one son, Eddie L. (Karin) Beck of Winnebago, Ill.; a daughter, Stephanie L. (Robert) Adair of Rockford, Ill.; three grandchildren, Randy Boatright, Tyler Beck and Jessica Beck, all of Winnebago; a brother, Ronald (Donna) Beck of Rockford; four sisters, Shirley (Joby) Condray, Mary Summers, Connie (Greg) Hobelmann and Ruth (Glenn) Evans; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Hassell Hutchison.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 North Alpine Road in Rockford, with Alton Parker Jr. officiating. Entombment followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice in Rockford.

Mary Lourine White

Mary Lourine White, 87, of Piggott, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, (today) with funeral services beginning at 11a.m. Wednesday (today), Oct. 13, at the First Presbyteran Church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, (today), in the Puxico Cemetery in Puxico.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Shane Vaughn

Michael Shane Vaughn, 30, of Piggott died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at his home in Piggott.

He was born on June 7, 1974, in Piggott, the son of Gerald Vaughn and Rita Owen Ward.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, L.H. Owen; and one aunt, Beverly Owen.

He is survived by his father, Gerald Vaughn of Batesville; mother, Rita Ward and husband, Bobby, of Piggott; paternal grandparents, Jack and Charlotte Vaughn of Piggott; maternal grandmother, Loreta Owen of Paragould; great-grandparents, Otho and Margaret Bradberry of Piggott; four step-brothers and sisters, Tanoca Deen of Campbell, Millie Reed of Balwin, Mo., Kim White of Poplar Bluff and Robby Ward of Jackson, Mo.; two aunts, Sheila Kilgore of Nashville and Debbie Higginbottom of Paragould; two uncles, Delane and Darwin Owen of Nashville; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Kevin Murray officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway.

Rachel Marie Bradshaw

Rachel Marie Bradshaw, 82, of Rector died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at her home.

She was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Clay County to the late Everett E. and Bessie (Bookout) Manning and was married March 28, 1946, to Max Bradshaw, who preceded her in death Sept. 8, 2004.

She was a member of the Blooming Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired food service worker for the Missouri School for the Blind.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Manning and Bill Manning, and one brother-in-law, Leonard Hardin.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jon and Lori Bradshaw of Rector and Frank and Edwina Bradshaw of Heber Springs; three daughters and a son-in-law, Polly Bradshaw, Mary Louise Wheat and Anna J. and Mike Strom, all of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Everett Jr. and Wilma Manning of Denver, Ind., and Troy and Betty Manning, Junie Manning and Bonnie Manning, all of Rector; one sister, Irma Hardin of Rector, and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 12 noon today (Wednesday, Oct. 20) at Irby Funeral Home Chapel in Rector with Bro. Don Morris officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector with Irby Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Donald Gene Akridge

Donald Gene Akridge, 60, of Campbell died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at him home.

He was born on April 22, 1944, in Gideon, Mo., the son of the late Lonzo Howard Akridge Sr. and Dorothy Prentice Akridge.

He married Bonnie Jean Ellsworth on July 19, 1989, in Malden.

He retired from General Motors in St. Louis and was of the Baptist Faith. Akridge was a United States Army Veteran having served during the Vietname War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilburn Akridge and Terry Akridge; and one nephew, Ryan Akridge.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Akridge of Campbell; a mother-in-law, Opal Ellsworth of Campbell; three sons, Brian Akridge and wife, Tonya, of Piggott, Donald Akridge II of Dallas and Donald Akridge Jr. and wife, Jenny, of St. Louis; four grandchildren, Dillon Ledford of Campbell, Katie and Noah Akridge of St. Louis and Phoebe Akridge of Dallas; five sisters, Phyllis Sims of Malden, Della Vannasdall of Gideon, Joyce Ellsworth of Malden, Judy Collins of Poplar Bluff and Ann Walbert of Malden; four brothers, James Akridge of Malden, Lonzo Akridge Jr. of Campbell, Jerry Akridge of Gideon and Robert Akridge of Campbell.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Landess Funeral Chapel in Campbell with Rev. James Black officiating.

Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Landess Addition in Campbell. Landess Funeral Home, Inc., of Campbell was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Lourine White

Mary Lourine White, 87, of Piggott died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at the Piggott Community Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 27, 1917, in Puxico, Mo., the daughter of the late Floyd and Iva Mae Lewis Burge.

She was united in marriage to Edward Charles White on Sept. 29, 1937. They had one son.

She taught school at Puxico, Illmo and Campbell, Mo., Peoria, Ill., and Monticello and Carryville, Ark.

She enjoyed writing poetry and gave private piano lessons for 70 years.

Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1990.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Stephen Edward White, and daughter-in-law, Mary Catherine, of Piggott; three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth White of Cle Elum, Wash., Laura Catherine Crone and husband, Jeff, of Little Rock and Zachary Hunter White of Piggott; one great-granddaughter, Mary Kate Crone; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Piggott with Wilma Hoover officiating. Graveside services were held at the Puxico Cemetery in Puxico at 2 p.m. and burial followed in the Puxico Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bob Gillispie, Jeff Crone, Zachary White, Marshall Hitt, Mark Book, Neil Smith, Larry Norred, Van Taylor and John Harlan.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
