William Lamar Palmer
Gurdon, Ark. - William “Bill” Lamar Palmer, 85, of Gurdon died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock. He was born Jan. 14, 1924 in Amity, to Bryon and Charlie Mae Lintz Palmer.
He was the owner/operator of Palmers Service Station in Gurdon for 34 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Gurdon, and an avid fisherman, hunter and baseball coach for years. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Flo Keiper Palmer; one son, Jerry Palmer; and one daughter, Judy Hittenrauch all of Gurdon; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was today at 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Rusty Jones and the Rev. Greg Burks officiating. Burial in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Arkadelphia.

Corliss Cobb Smith
Beaumont, Texas - Corliss Cobb Smith, 56, of Beaumont, Texas passed away as a result of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at her residence. She was born Nov. 23, 1952 in Cushing, Okla., to William and Ruth (Bowser) Cobb. A resident of Beaumont since 2007, she lived in Arkadelphia and Kennesaw, Ga., where she taught elementary school for more than 25 years.
She loved teaching, especially teaching children how to read. She was nationally recognized and earned numerous awards for her teaching skills. In high school, she played the French horn and taught piano lessons. Later in her life, she again picked up the French horn playing in the First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia orchestra. Her other contributions and involvements with children include her service as a den mother with the Cub Scouts, teaching Sunday School, and her and her husband’s time as foster parents.
She is survived by her husband, Randy Smith of Beaumont; parents, William and Ruth Cobb of Henderson, Texas; sons, Ben Smith of Beaumont and Tyler Smith of Athens, GA; sister, Vicky Cobb Williams and her husband Stanley of Kingwood; sister-in-law, Beth Smith of Houston; brother-in-law, Rick Smith of League City, Texas; and parents-in-law, Hugh and Anna Smith of Silsbee.
Memorial service were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont.

Harris Herron
Curtis, Ark. - Harris Herron, 83, of Curtis died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia. He was born Feb. 15, 1925 the son of R.H. “Shorty” and Jewell Freeman Herron. He was a retired a well driller and for many years owned and operated Herron’s Grocery and Station in Curtis. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Curtis. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Steve Herron, an infant daughter, Ann, and a sister, Relda Dodwell.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Joan Irish Herron; two sons: Mike Herron of Curtis and Terry Herron of Fayetteville; one brother, Clifford Herron of Waxhaw, N.C.; one sister, Avanelle Beene of Curtis; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 1, at 10 a.m. at the Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Runyan, the Rev. Bobby Cook, and the Rev. Johnny Irish officiating. Burial will be in Richwoods Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Curtis in Richwoods Cemetery.
Johnny Daugherty
WHELEN SPRINGS - Johnny Daugherty, 77, of Gurdon died Sept. 1, 2008, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Arkadelphia. He was born April 26, 1931, in Patmos, the son of the late Amos Paul and Idella Summers Daugherty. He was retired from Pilgrim's Pride in Lewisville, formerly with the Gurdon water department and he preached all across Southern Arkansas for more than 25 years.
Survivors include: His wife Vera Hughes Daugherty; two sons, Tommy Frisby of Gurdon and Steven Daugherty of Searcy; one daughter, Terri Lynn Daugherty of Murfreesboro; one sister Lou Taylor of Pine Bluff; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Maurice Dickey and Rev. Doug Higginbotham officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery
at Sycamore under the direction of Welch Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Roland Hughes, Jimmy Hughes, Bill Hughes, James Kenneth Hughes, Bill Graves and Perry Williams. Honorary pallbearers are Dwight Malcom and Harvey Taylor.

Roland R. Bosley
SPARKMAN - Roland R. Bosley, 78, of Sparkman died Sept. 1, 2008, in Health Park Hospital in Hot Springs. He was born June 16, 1930, in Clark County, Ark., the son of the late Richard and Rosa Parker Bosley. He was a retired logger and a member of Oak Grove Church near Gurdon.
Survivors include: His wife of 59 years, Lucille Cooper Bosley; four sons, Michael Bosley of Hopper, Larry Bosley of Little Rock, Timmy Bosley of Sparkman and Randy Bosley of Gurdon; two daughters, Nancy Creed of Prattsville and Shelia Brown of Little Rock; one sister, Gladys Gilly of Lodi, Calif.; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Easley Cemetery
near Gurdon with Harry Stone officiating.
No formal visitation is planned.

William Bland
GURDON - William Bland, 80, of Gurdon died Aug. 31, 2008, at Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock. He was born May 28, 1928, in Emmet, son of the late Andy and Irene Bland. He was a retired employee of International Paper Company and a member of Mount Canaan Baptist Church of Gurdon.
Survivors include: A son, William Bland Jr. of Gurdon; five daughters, Dorothy Jackson of Killeen, Texas, Shirley Odum of Copperas Cove, Texas, Kathleen Purifoy of Hope, Edna Hatley of Gurdon and Gracie Stafford of Little Rock; three brothers, Sandy Bland and Charles Bland of Wichita, Kan., and George Bland of Dodge City, Kan.; four sisters, Minnie Harvell and Novell Bland of Wichita, Margie Bland of Prescott and Jimmie Clendenon of New Jersey.
Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Canaan Baptist Church in Gurdon with Rev. Johnnie Harris officiating. Burial will be in Laneburg Cemetery
near Prescott under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
John W. Reynolds
PRESCOTT - John Warren Reynolds, 59, of Prescott died Sept. 1, 2008, following a brief illness. He was born Aug, 18, 1949, in Hope and grew up in Prescott where he played high school football and worked as a disc jockey at radio station KTPA. He graduated from Arkansas State University in 1971 with a degree in journalism. In college, he was editor of the Arkansas State Herald and a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He later worked as advertising manager at the Daily Times Herald in Forrest City and the Wynne Progress and as managing editor in Wynne. He served as publicity coordinator at Eastern Arkansas Community College in Forrest City before returning to newspaper work as a sports writer for the Newport Daily Independent and then as the paper's publisher. He also served as sports editor for the Searcy Daily Citizen and the Daily Siftings Herald in Arkadelphia. He earned numerous Arkansas Press Association awards for writing, photography and advertising. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Reynolds Jr.
Survivors include: His mother, Helen Cummings Reynolds of Prescott; a brother, Robert W. Reynolds III of Chicago; a sister, Kay Whitehead of Magnolia; a son, Anders Reynolds of Washington, D.C.; and a daughter, Molly Reynolds of Little Rock.
A private memorial service was today at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott with Rev. Charlotte Cobb officiating.

Clarence O. McCray
ARKADELPHIA - Clarence Otis McCray, 63, of Arkadelphia died Aug. 29, 2008, at his home. He was born on Nov. 12, 1944, in Stephens, son of James Otis and Fannie Paschal McCray. He was a 1962 graduate of Stephens High School. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietname War veteran. He was a former employee of Exxon, Golden Service Center, International Paper Company and bus driver for CADC. He was an elder of the Caddo Valley Congregation Jehovah's Witness.
Survivors include: His wife, Alice McCray; two sons, Aaron D. McCray and Marques S. McCray of Arkadelphia; four brothers, James McCray Sr., Carl McCray and Steve McCray of Saginaw Mich., and Larry McCray of Davidson, Mich.; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness with Bro. Elijah Neamons officiating. Burial will be in Helms Cemetery
under the direction of Marks Funeral Home, Inc. of Magnolia.
Active pallbearers will be Chris Walker, Mike Burroughs, Thomas Sowles, Bud Thornton, Brett George, Williams Keeling, Cantrell Lewis and Sean Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers.

Laron O. Hill
MALVERN - Laron O. Hill, 31, of Malvern died Aug. 31, 2008. He was born March 11, 1977, in Malvern, son of Billy Ray and Cheryl Lynn McGill Hill.
He was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church and a 1995 graduate of Malvern High School. He was attending Motorcycle Mechanics Institute of Arizona.
Survivors include: His wife, Lavonia Simmons Hill; a daughter, Alexandria Hill; a stepdaughter, Franzuelah Morgan; his parents; a sister, Tomekia "Chelle" Ollison and his grandmother, Maud S. Hill, all of Malvern.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greater New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Lea officiating and Rev. Chat Hart Sr., eulogist.

Marie G. Mitchell
ARKADELPHIA - Marie Gunter Mitchell, 90, of Arkadelphia died Sept. 6, 2008, in Arkadelphia. She was born July 30, 1918, in Atoka, Okla., the daughter of the late John Richard and Bessie M. Gunter. She was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church and the widow of Alton Mitchell.
Survivors include: Four brothers, Jay Gunter of Clovis, Calif., Virgil Gunter of El Dorado, Calif., Frank Gunter of Visalia, Calif., Charles Gunter of Sacramento, Calif., and one sister, Audry Thill of Coos Bay, Ore.
Funeral services were today in the Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home chapel with Bro. John Howard officiating. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Dewey Dixon
GURDON - George "Dewey" Dixon, 88, of Gurdon entered into his heavenly home with Jesus his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Baptist Health Medical Center- Arkadelphia. He was born on March 26, 1920, in the South Fork community of Gurdon, the son of the late George Columbus "Shorty" Dixon and Nellie Callaway Dixon. He retired from Missouri Pacific Railroad as a locomotive engineer after 32 years. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Gurdon and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, Dr. Don Dixon.
His survivors include: His wife of 62 years, Mary Lou Francis Dixon, Gurdon; two daughters, Kay Hogue and Charles, Sherwood, Beverly Baggett, Little Rock; three grandchildren, David Hogue, Atlanta, Ga., Michael Hogue, Sherwood, Stacey Page and Lanny, Little Rock; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Page, Ashley Page and Brittany Hogue; two sisters, Mary Harris and Gene, Betty Jones and Henry; one brother, Henry Grady Dixon and Eula Mae; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Dixon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral was today at First United Methodist Church, Gurdon, with Rev. Gregg Burks and Rev. Rusty Jones officiating. Burial was in South Fork Cemetery, Gurdon. Arrangements are by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home, Prescott.

Etta B. Hathcock
ARKADELPHIA - Etta Faye Bosley Hathcock, 84, of Arkadelphia, died Sept. 7, 2008, at her home. She was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Gum Springs, daughter of Joe Bosley and Lucy Songer Bosley. She was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Hathcock; her parents; one sister and one brother.
Survivors include: One son, Marvin Hathcock of Friendship; two daughters, Malinda Clark of Friendship and Betty Irvin of Magnet Cove; one brother, Joe Bosley Jr. of Caddo Valley; one sister, Mary Ellen Morrison of Friendship; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Terri V. Layton
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Terri Vaughn Layton, age 46, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008. She was born March 13, 1962, in Arkadelphia, to Rufus Douglas Vaughn and Joyce Pittman Vaughn. Terri attended Mary Carroll High School. She worked at South Texas Adult Medicine Association as a bookkeeper and was an accomplished seamstress.
Terri leaves behind her family to cherish her memories: One son, James Layton; two daughters, Katy Layton and Alana Layton; her mother, Joyce Pittman Buehler; two sisters, Catherine Diane Lindsay and June Vaughn; one brother, Ken Vaughn, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were private. Arrangements were by Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Corpus Christi.
Terry is loved by many friends and family who will miss her dearly.
JaDasia Z. Cole
ARKADELPHIA - JaDasia Zarrae Cole died Sept. 15, 2008, in Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia. She was born Sept. 15, 2008, daughter of Ebonie Moss and Jamaal Cole.
She is survived by: Her parents; one brother, JaDonte Cole, and her grandparents, Janet Moss, Thomas Moss Jr., Carol Williamson, Charles Williamson and John Cole.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. John Cemetery
