Luke Colwell
Luke Marion Colwell, 87, of Springfield, died Friday, April 14, 2006.
He was born to Ira Colwell and Addie Darnell Colwell on Oct. 18, 1918, in Boswell, Okla. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Colorado to build Route 66. He was a World War II veteran, earning the rank of sergeant, a Good Conduct Medal and Bronze Star for bravery. He was a member of the Retreads Motorcycle Club and an artist.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mickey Colwell; one son, Jim Colwell of EI Paso, Texas; two daughters, Linda Crow of Springfield, and Vicki Freeburn of Little Rock; two brothers, Earl Colwell of Tulsa, and A. D. Colwell of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, JoAnn Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at the Bob Neal and Sons Funeral Home.

J.R. Darter
J. R. “Jay” Darter, 68, of Atkins, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006.
A son of Ira Lee and Evia (Burris) Darter, he was born Nov. 28, 1937, in the Buttermilk Community near Appleton. He retired from the United States Air Force, established Darter Brother Pallets in Atkins, and was, with his wife, Sue, the owner of Sue’s Treasures in Atkins and former owner of 9 South Flea Market in Morrilton. He was a member of the 
military Vehicle Preservation Association.
Survivors include four sons, Johnny Darter of Centerville, Danny Darter of Atkins, Billy Darter of Lamar, and Tommy Darter of Pottsville; one daughter, Evia Darter of Dover; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Friday at the Shinn Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Henry Bateman. Burial was in Tate Cemetery
near Appleton, by Shinn Funeral Service.
Pallbearers were Paul Harliss, Glen Dunning, Eddie Wood, Dib Godbey, Harrel Brown, and Major Ruddell. Honorary pallbearers were Matt Childress, “Fat” Fryer, Jack Winchell, Glen Matchett, and Jason Shaddon.
James George
James Robert “Red” George, age 69, of Adona, Arkansas, passed away at his home on April 13, 2006.
He was born December 22, 1936, in Centerville, Arkansas, to the late David Melton “Red” George and Margaret Thornton George.
On August 15, 1956, he started his career with automotive parts supplier 555 Inc., which changed hands two times with Red retiring 49 years later from Parts Warehouse Inc. on April 30, 2004. Even after retirement, he still continued working when needed. He was a member of Ola United Methodist Church but attended First Baptist Church in Perryville.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Tommie Lee Lovell George of Adona; his son, Rob George and wife Debbie of Perryville; his daughter, Laurie Dicus and husband Greg of Adona; one brother, Thomas George and wife Charlene of Conway; two sisters, Sally Hunt and husband Buddy of Bigelow, and Linda Infield and husband Jack of Van Buren. Also surviving are three grandsons, Seth Yarbrough, Alex George and Lane Dicus and three granddaughters, Sonya George, Melanie George, and Dani George; and one great-granddaughter, Kami Blanton.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday, April 17, at First Baptist Church in Perryville with Bro. Thomas Allen and Dr. Mike Stanley officiating with burial at Deberrie Cemetery
near Aplin, Arkansas by Harris Funeral Home of Perryville.
Pallbearers were Allen Lovell, Keith Lovell, Gary Lovell, Greg Dicus, F.W. Dicus, and Jim Williams. Honorary pallbearers were Cletus Duckworth, Huey Famcher, Jay Jamison, and employees of Parts Warehouse Inc.
Annie Rae Gray
Annie Rae (Jennings) Gray, daughter of the late Homer E. Jennings and Cora Ethel (Drown) Jennings, was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Pleasant Valley, Ark. She departed this life on April 16, 2006, at her home in Morrilton, Ark., at the age of 84 years and three months.
After receiving a degree in Library Science, Annie worked as a librarian in Texas and Missouri. She helped establish the library system at Jefferson County College in Hillsboro, Mo., where she retired as head librarian after 27 years of employment. Annie was an avid traveler who enjoyed reading, gardening and sewing.
She was an active member of the Harding Street Church of Christ. She was an equally active member of the community, serving as a member of the Petit Jean Garden Club, The Friends of the Library, and the Red Hat Society. She was a former president of the Conway County Democratic Women and Rialto Theater. She was a member of the Literary Coterie.
Annie leaves to mourn her passing one brother and sister-in-law, Dalton and Wilma Jennings of North Little Rock; four nieces and nephews, Deborah Pallone, Jay Jennings, Janna Virden, and Danton Jennings; three great-nieces; four great-nephews; and a host of other relatives and many good friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Walton Jennings.
Funeral service will be today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the Calico Rock Funeral Chapel with Charles Bane officiating. Burial will be at Wises Chapel Cemetery
under the direction of Eddie’s Family Funeral Home in Calico Rock.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19.
Memorials may be made to the Conway County Library or the Harding Street Church of Christ in Morrilton.
Pallbearers will be Jay Jennings, Danton Jennings, Bryant Virden, Ronald Round, Edward Owens, Sonny Owens, and Elijah Virden.
A tea in her memory will be at 2 o’clock Sunday at the Harding Street Church of Christ. Everyone is welcome.
James Hamm
James Hamm, 77, of Russell-ville, died Saturday, April 15, 2006.
The son of Jefferson and Hattie Mae (Massey) Hamm, he was born Jan. 17, 1929, in Jerusalem. He was a United States Army veteran of the
Korean War.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Harrell of Pottsville and Jimmy Harrell of South Korea; one daughter, Mona Stinnett of Sandwich, Ill.; two brothers, Kenneth Hamm of Morrilton and Perry Davis of California; two sisters, Maryellen Baker and Oleta Evans, both of Morrilton; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Humphrey Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Morris and the Rev. Steven Smith officiating. Burial will be at Pisgah Cemetery
at Pottsville under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.
Pallbeares will be Randy Stinnett, Mark Lauppe, Kenny Taylor, Kyle Taylor, David Stinnett, John Parsons, William Warren, and Terry Ornsbey.
Maggie Jones
Maggie Myrtle Shockley Pray Jones, age 94, of Kansas City, Kansas, formerly of Scotland, went to her heavenly home Tuesday, April 11, 2006.
She was born November 6, 1911, in Spiro, Oklahoma, a daughter of Claude and Sarah Shockley. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, three brothers, and her beloved husband, Guy Jones. Maggie and Guy made their home on Pleasant Grove Loop in the Scotland community. She was well known for her iris garden and her beautiful quilts.
She is survived by her daughter, Joneta Ingram and her husband Lonnie of Kansas City, Kan.; her son, Harold Pray and his wife Myrna of Conway, Arkansas, as well as grandchildren: Danny and Waynette Ingram of North Carolina, Michael and Theresa Ingram of Missouri, Kevin Pray of Tennessee, Kent and Beverly Pray of Arkansas, and Lonneta and Jason Redman of Missouri; also surviving are great-grandchildren: David, Kyle, Brandon, Jessica, Jason II, Blake, Travis, Jordan, Eva, Eliana, and Allyson.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2006, at Scotland Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Deckelman officiating. Interment was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery
by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Pallbearers were Brandon Ingram, Danny Ingram, Mike Ingram, Kevin Pray, Kent Pray, and Jason Redman. Lonneta Redman was honorary pallbearer.
James Pavatt
James Harold Pavatt, age 46, of Morrilton, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2006.
He was born October 30, 1959, in Morrilton, Arkansas, a son of James Hardy Pavatt and Nova Flowers Pavatt.
Survivors include his stepmother, Doris Henderson Pavatt of Morrilton; sister, Mary Jo Hill of Palestine, Arkansas; stepsister, Nina Magie of Morrilton; stepbrother, Robert Henderson of Van Buren, a host of nieces and nephews, and a loving staff at Alexander Children’s Unit.
Graveside services were 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, at Elmwood Cemetery
by with Mr. Charles Bane officiating. Arrangements were by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Elmer Penney
Elmer Penney, 93, of Arkadelphia, died Sunday, April 16, 2006.
He was born Jan 12, 1913, in Clark County, the son of the Floyd L. and Josie (Haltom) Penney. He was a farmer, a World War II Army veteran and a charter member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He worked at the National Gypsum Plant for many years and was the widower of his first wife, Bessie (McCallum) Penney.
Survivors include his wife, Rea Marceil Penney; one son, Ronnie Penney of Arkadelphia; three daughters, Mary Jo Jones of Arkadelphia, Dottie Ann Green of Okolona, and Shirley May Tackett of Plumerville; four stepchildren, Darla Sears of Pocola, Okla., Ken Miles of Arkadelphia, Jan Sears of Cordell, Okla., and Rea Pounds of Austin, Texas; one sister, Irene Stenquist of Rogue River, Ore.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; and 19 great-stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:30 today (Wednesday) in Ruggles-Wilcox Chapel with the Rev. Greg Kirksey officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Cedar Grove Baptist Church.
Bailey Rankin
Bailey Marie Rankin, age 14, of Perryville went to be with the Lord April 17, 2006.
She was born October 6, 1991, a daughter of Jimmy Charles Rankin Jr. and Christy (Bull) Rankin. She was an eighth-grade student at Perryville Junior High School, member of the Beta Club, band, and a cheerleader; she was also a member of the Church of Christ.
She is survived by her father and mother; her sister, Jaylen, and brother, Topher; her grandfather, “Paw-Paw” Bruce Bull, and grandmother, “Maw-Maw” Mariless Strandlund, all of Perryville; great-grandparents, J.C. and Mary Maddox of Houston and Wiley Bill and Mary Tipton of Bigelow.
She is also survived by her special aunt, Angela Carey, and special cousins, Beth, Gregory and Timothy Stivers; uncle, Barry Bull and wife Shelly; and aunt, Misty Brannon, all of Perryville, and uncle, Gary Bull and Laura Bull of Bolivia, as well as a host of other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jimmy Charles Rankin Sr. and “Na-Na” Joy Lynn (Tipton) Rankin, and great-grandparents, Fay and Marie Bull.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2006, at the First Baptist Church in Perryville with Mr. Jason Almond officiating. Burial will be at Cherry Hill Cemetery
by Harris Funeral Home of Perryville.

Dalton Stacks
Dalton Stacks went to be with the Lord on April 13, 2006.
He was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Guy, Ark., to David Cicero Stacks and Ethel (Langley) Stacks. His mother passed away when he was 18 months old. He always said he couldn’t have chosen a better mother than the one who raised him, Ora Shelby Stacks.
He grew up in Wooster, Ark. He married Irene Walker on Jan. 1, 1938, in Plumerville. They made their home in Plumerville, raising both of their daughters there.
He was in the United States Navy during World War II earning a Purple Heart during an air raid. Dalton was ordained a deacon of Portland Missionary Baptist Church in Plumerville in 1952. He was honored for 50 years of service in 2002 at the church. He was an original member of the Conway County Mounted Patrol, which was organized in 1964 and received their constitution and bylaws in 1965. He was a member of Plumerville Masonic Lodge 253 for a number of years.
He was the former owner of Morrilton Feed Mill, manager of Morrilton Cottonseed Oil Mill, a turkey farmer, and a manager of Darraugh Feed in Little Rock in 1970, where he suffered a two-story fall from a grain elevator, leaving him unable to walk, talk, read, and write. He fought the odds and relearned to do all of this and more.
He served on the Plumerville School Board, Plumerville City Council, and the WinRock Scholarship Committee and served as a Democratic Committeeman in Howard City for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, his wife, Irene, a son-in-law, Keith Stephens, a great-granddaughter, Hollie Bryant, his two brothers, Omar and Wade, and his three sisters, Bronnie, Erma Lee, and Bonnie Rae (Billie).
He is survived by two daughters, Judee Stephens Bryant of Morrilton and Beverly Pate (Jack) of Wylie, Texas; four granddaughters, Jodee Stephens Cotner (Johnny) of Plumerville, Kay Stephens Henry (Togo) of Plumerville, Amy Pate Kirkpatrick of Mesquite, Texas, and Amanda (Stephens) Nicholson (Andy) of Morrilton; and three grandsons, Dalton “Scooter” Stephens of Mountain Home, Todd Pate of Wylie, Texas, and Matthew “Scottie” Stephens of Perryville.
He is also survived by six great-grandsons, David “Bear” Bryant, Matthew “Cubby” Cotner, John “Deuce” Cotner, Kipp Henry, Bailey Henry, all of Plumerville, and Kane “Boo” Stephens of Perryville; and five great-granddaughters, Annamichelle “Missy” Cotner, Galeighanna “Layni” Cotner, both of Plumerville, Amber Kirkpatrick of Mesquite, Texas, K-Anna “Cricket” Stephens of Morrilton, and Jastyn “Jazzy” Henry of Plumerville.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Portland Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Lindy Davis officiating. Burial was at Plummerville Cemetery
by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Pallbearers were Anthony “Poss” Walker, David Drilling, Bear Bryant, Cubby Cotner, Deuce Cotner, Kipp Henry, and Bailey Henry.
William Wallace
William Odell Wallace, 72, of Fayetteville died Tuesday, April 11, 2006.
He was born July 22, 1933, at Ada Valley, a son of William Ofles Wallace and Virgie Zalie (Branch) Wallace. He was an Army veteran and a retired security guard.
There were no immediate survivors.
Graveside service was 10 a.m. Friday at Ada Valley Cemetery
with Dr. Bill Brown officiating. Arrangements were by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Cole Jack Avant
Cole Jack Avant, 21, of Little Rock, died Friday, April 28, 2006, from injuries received earlier in a car accident.
He was born Oct. 12, 1984, in Little Rock, a son of Ramona Young of Hattieville. He was a student at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and was employed at Dillard’s.
Other than his mother, survivors include two sisters, Wanda Stone of Perryville and Glenna Davis of Hattieville; one brother, Fred Davis III of Hattieville; and grandparents, Wanda and Glenn Smith of Searcy.
Funeral services were at Forte Reach Church by Bro. Don Hillis.
Afton Bryant
Afton Bryant, age 82, of Center Ridge, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2006.
He was born on December 12, 1923, in Formosa, Arkansas, a son of Eli Bryant and Mary Jane (Epperson) Bryant. He was a retired auto mechanic and Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Granpa’s favorite saying was “I kicked my achin’ tomater can.”
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean (Foster) Bryant; one son, Afton Joe Bryant (Jennie) of Greenbrier; five daughters, Brenda Reynolds (Steven) of Center Ridge, Teresa Jean Brewer (Mike) of Little Rock, Gloria Williams (Danny) of Woolverton Mountain, Brandy Michelle Bryant of Roswell, New Mexico, Kristy Danielle Bryant of Center Ridge; two brothers, Doy Bryant of Center Ridge and Jim F. Bryant of Morrilton; six sisters, Bertie Flowers of Birdtown, Muril Dixon of Morrilton, Mary Sutton (Bud) of Wiener, Arkansas, Fay McCoy of Kennet, Missouri, Nina Scroggins and Betty Flowers (Carl) of Center Ridge; six grandsons, Dustin, Daniel and Derrick Williams, all of Woolverton Mountain, Matt Bryant of Kansas, Micheal Brewer of Little Rock, and Zachary Loyd of Ft. Carson, Colorado; four granddaughters, Lorie Moore of Jacksonville, Amanda Smith of Oppelo, Tiffany Poe of Mablevale, and Dakotah Loyd of Roswell, New Mexico; and seven great-grandchildren.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Laverne Hill
Laverne Hill, 76, of Van Buren, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006.
She was born July 9, 1919, in Humphrey, a daughter of Robert and Weamer (Alverson) Ash-craft. She was a member of Harvest Time Tabernacle and branch manager of Mr. Rob’s Dry Cleaners for 22 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Marsha Stroud of Van Buren; one brother, Robert Ashcraft of Russellville; and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Bruce Williams, James White, Jack Peters, Mack Bates, Brad Ward, Bruce Hawkins, Alan Wilson, and Dr. Terry Jennings.
Funeral service were 2 p.m. Saturday in Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Oak Cemetery
under the direction of Fentress Mortuary in Fort Smith.
