HAGARVILLE — William Charles Ragsdale, 89, of Hagarville died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Fort Smith. He was a farmer and the widower of Elizabeth Ragsdale.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Hagarville cemetery.
He is survived by three nieces, Jessie Mae Brown of Clarksville, Amelia Hunt of Salinas, Calif., and Elizabeth Wietstock of Federal Way, Wash.
Pallbearers will be John and Andrew Hull, Mark Hodge, Tim Wietstock, Dale Rowbotham and Charles Brown.
Elizabeth Cureton
HACKETT — Elizabeth Prescott Cureton, 81, of Hackett died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Hackett. She was born Aug. 29, 1919, in Conway, S.C. She served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and in the Air Force. She was a charter member of World War II Women’s National Memorial in Arlington cemetery in Washington, D.C. She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Cove and a member of VFW Greenwood Post No. 6527.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today in Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Cove with burial at Pleasant Grove cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home in Mena.
She is survived by her husband, Gene; one daughter, Carol Cearley of Hackett; one son, George A. Cureton of Hackett; one sister, Edith Abbott of Greenville, S.C.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Cearly, Jimmy Northcutt, George Allen Cureton, Robert Luke Cureton, Kenneth Headley and Terry Scott.

Rev. Virginia Yandell
KINGSTON, Okla. — The Rev. Virginia Dean Yandell, 63, of Kingston, Okla., died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001. She was born Nov. 1, 1937, in Short, Okla. She was a homemaker and a preacher.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Covenant Life Assembly of God with burial at Seabolt cemetery in Short under the direction of John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel in Moore, Okla.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; two daughters, Debbie Risher of Moore and Janet Wing of Sayre, Okla.; one son, Tony Rogers of Yukon, Okla.; one sister, Carol Cole of Moore.; one brother, Clyde Hamilton of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Leonard Newman
Leonard Ray Newman, 85, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in a local nursing home. He was a retired machine operator for Garrison Furniture Factory, an Army veteran of World War II and served with the 241st Field Artillery Battalion. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Midway Assembly of God with burial at Ellsworth cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Velma; two sisters, Pearl Dooley of Sweetwater, Texas, and Ruby N. Inman of Fort Smith; two brothers, Roy J. and Cecil W. Newman both of Fort Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Curt Varnell, Larry and Lindell Parsons, Gordon Trusty, Robert Adams, Billy Wooden and Harold Hinson.

ALMA — Marl Dean “Doc” Weaver, 67, of Alma died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Fayetteville. He was a retired Navy veteran of the Korean War and a retired independent truck driver. He was a member of DAV Chapter No. 42, the Alma VFW and United Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Alma. The body was cremated.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Katherine Ann Thompson of Sacramento, Calif., and Jennie J. Henderson of Lancaster, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Judy Cummins of Austin, Texas; four sons, Richard of Tulare, Calif., Henry of Alma, William C. Weaver of Mountainburg and Roger D. Weaver of Van Buren; two stepsons, Lonnie Simmon of Fort Smith and Ricky Cooter of Van Buren; his mother, Gladys Weaver of Alma; one sister, Diane Whaite of Raymond, Calif.; three brothers, Marcel of Shady Grove, Bill of Poteau and Don of Belton, Mo.; 25 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

ALMA — Virginia V. Musselman, 73, of Alma died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Jehovah’s Witness Church in Mountainburg.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Alma City cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home in Alma.
She is survived by her husband, Harold; one daughter, Pamela Ortha Guthrie of Van Buren; her mother, Rada Walker Johnson of Van Buren; one sister, Betty Farmer of Fort Smith; six grandchildren, Velvet Graham, Jerala Grayson and Mondria Hamilton, all of Fort Smith, Brooke Elliott, Carissa and Amara Guthrie, all of Van Buren; and nine great-grandchildren.
James Stringer
WALDRON — James Arvil “Red” Stringer, 87, of Waldron died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Waldron. He was a farmer and a member of Hon Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hon Baptist Church with burial at Hon cemetery under the direction of Martin Funeral Home in Waldron.
He is survived by two sons, G.W. and Freddie, both of Fort Smith; two sisters, Rita Thomas of Waldron and Marie Starr of Mountain Pine; three brothers, Turner of Corcoran, Calif., Eugene of Fayetteville and Jessie of Hackett; five grandchildren, Mark, Todd and Amy Stringer, Regina Garcia and Angela Nigh; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mark, Todd, Mike, and Paul Stringer, Kenneth Nevills and Linden Scott.
The body may be viewed from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

MULBERRY — Johnny C. “Jay” Graff, 70, of Mulberry died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Ozark. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired tool and die maker for Rheem Manufacturing and a member of Centerpoint Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Alma with burial with military honors at Rankin cemetery in Franklin County.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; one daughter, Karen Lea Allen of Vernal, Utah; one son, Johnny C. Graf II of Cameron; two sisters, Elizabeth Jackson and Armitta Jones, both of Mulberry; three grandchildren, Kenna and Kyler Chad Graf and Kaye Leigh Hawkins.
Pallbearers will be Sean, Brad, Phillip, Wade and Chris Stewart, Geoffrey Mobarak, Durrell Jones and Kennith Bearden II.

MAGAZINE — Augusta Mae Dacus, 78, of Magazine died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Fort Smith. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Roberts Funeral Home in Booneville with burial at Ellington cemetery in Magazine.
She is survived by one son, Thomas Brough Dacus of Greenwood; one grandson, Dustin Dacus of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellis Fitzgerald
Ellis Martha Fitzgerald, 91, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Fort Smith. She was a retired head housekeeper for Goldman Hotel. She was one of the founders and a charter member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Alma City cemetery.
She is survived by six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be members of the family.
Raymond Spillers
LITTLE ROCK — Raymond Carl Spillers, 88, of Little Rock died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas and an engineer for Southwestern Bell Telephone. He was a member of Wood Memorial Christian Church of Van Buren and the Telephone Pioneers. He played tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arkansas Razorbacks during the 1930s.
Funeral was held Monday in the Chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth in Little Rock with burial at Pinecrest cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; one daughter, Julie Nordan of Gulfport, Miss.; one sister, Mailee Carter of Fort Smith; one brother, Ralph Spillers of Topeka, Kan.; four grandchildren, Erick Nordan, Bucky Boyd, Lari Baruchle and Vikki Smith; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Miles Garner, 76, of Van Buren died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in a local hospital. He was a native of Van Buren, an elder emeritus and member of the Van Buren First Presbyterian Church, and retired from the U.S. Air Force as a senior master sergeant, where he was a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of the Arkansas Geological Commission, the Crawford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Crawford County Democratic Party Association, the United States Golf Association and the National Rifle Association. He was retired from the U.S.D.A. Inspection Service.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today in Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at U.S. National cemetery with full military honors in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Garner of the home; two daughters, Pat Delozier of Van Buren and Carol Sines of Alma; two sisters, Margaret Garner of Sendai, Japan and Nell Franklin of Brooksville, Fla.; one brother, John Garner of Van Buren; five grandchildren, Michael and Jeremy Vernnon, Lisa Guthrie, Mindy Delozier and Nicole Doyle; three great-grandchildren, Justin Vernnon and Jerry Mac Vernnon and Mikayla Doyle.

William Lee “Bill” Bass, 70, of Fayetteville died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in a Fayetteville hospital. He served more than 20 years in the Army and Air Force, having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received several citations for valor, including the Bronze Star. He retired as a technical sergeant. He was a Baptist and lived in Van Buren and Muskogee, Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lela Bass; a brother, J.T., who was killed in the Korean War; and one nephew, Buddy Bass of Muskogee.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial with full military honors at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of the home; two stepsons, Winston Harvey and his wife, Billie Jean, of Tulsa, and Gary Harvey and his wife, Edith Rae, of Fayetteville; one sister, Nadine Wood and her husband, Paul, of Muskogee; one brother, Melvin Bass and his wife, Edith, of Muskogee; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James F. Edwards, 71, of Mulberry died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Dec. 23, 1929, in Fort Smith to Fanny (Taylor) and Isom Edwards. He retired from the military and was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Mulberry First Baptist Church. He was the former owner of Jim’s Grocery in Mulberry.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday in Mulberry First Baptist Church with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home in Ozark. The Rev. Jim Box will officiate.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Edwards of Mulberry; two daughters, Sandy Allen and Cindy Tobey, both of Mulberry; one son, Jim Edwards of Fort Smith; four sisters, Nina Braden of Limestone, Ark., Neva Tilseth and Joyce Cervantes both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Faye Fulford of Elizabethtown, N.C.; one brother, R.B. Edwards of Mulberry; three grandchildren, John Allen of Mulberry, Lori McCalister of Alma, and Erin Tobey of Mobile, Ala.; two great-grandchildren, Taylor BreeAnne of Alma and Hayden James of Mulberry.

PANAMA — Floyd A. Wagner, 90, of Panama died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Broken Arrow. He was an electrician and the widower of Mildred Wagner.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home in Spiro.
He is survived by one daughter, Mildred Ann Swan of Oolagah, Okla.; three sons, Robert Earl Wagner of Mountainburg, Russell E. Wagner of Sallisaw and David E. Wagner of Benbrook, Texas; two sisters, Roxie Sharp of Murry Spur, Okla., and Teresa Holloman of Burlington, Wash.; one brother, Louie B. Wagner of Van Buren; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
