POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Mary Jane Schuele, 77, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died Monday, March 26, 2001, in Waldron. She was a homemaker and a Protestant.
The body was cremated under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Ed Hawkins of Waldron; and a grandson, Nicholas Hawkins.
Raymon Shepherd
KEOTA — Raymon Shepherd, 84, of Keota died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Stigler. He was a bus driver for Keota Public Schools and was a deacon and a member of Iron Bridge Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Iron Bridge Free Will Baptist Church with burial at Keota cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Stigler.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Ruth Ann Cole of Keota; a son, Don Shepherd of Tulsa; two sisters, Beulah Cordle of Keota and Hazel Halverson of Stigler; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Glyn and Willard Cordle, Herman D. Medlock, Elmer E. Shepherd, Glen and James Doss.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home.
George McDowell
HACKETT — George McDowell, 71, of Hackett died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star and the United Nations Service Medal and was a member of the 68th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. He was a retired mechanic.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday in McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Cheryl Jafar of Downey, Calif., and Debra Bowes of Torrance, Calif.; three sons, Glenn McDowell of Long Beach, Calif., Bernard Joe King Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif. and Robert “Bill” King of Hackett; two brothers, Estel McDowell of Hackett and Loyd McDowell of Centralia, Mo.; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Nokhost, Shawan McClure, David Parks, Steve and Deebrian Tankersley and Steve Blankenship.
The body may be viewed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
John Maxwell
John D. Maxwell, 94, of Van Buren, formerly of Mountainburg, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in a local nursing home. He was a retired pipe fitter in industrial construction, a member of Pipe Fitters Union Local No. 198, and the Hobbtown Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by a son, John Bert Maxwell of Northridge, Calf.; two brothers, Austin Maxwell of Rudy and Clyde Maxwell of Wichita, Kan.; and one granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Franklin, James Parmenter, David Broadrick, Johnny Whitsett, Bill Vickery and Leon Lamb.
Gene Gortemiller
HOUSTON — Gene Gortemiller, 69, of Houston, formerly of Oden, died Friday, March 23, 2001, in Houston. He was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Opal. He was a Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a fireman for the Houston Fire Department and on the Advisory Board for Northline Park Police Station in Houston. He was a member of the Little Hope Baptist Church in Oden.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gortemiller cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by his wife, Velma; two daughters, Tambra Johnson of Jasper, Texas and Ronda Guerrero of Alvin, Texas; a son, Kenneth Gortemiller of Houston; a brother, Bud Gortemiller of Las Vegas; five grandchildren, Debra Gortemiller and Tammy Heefner, both of Houston, Candace Clark of Marrow, Ga., Elizabeth and Michael Guerrero, both of Alvin, Texas; and two great-grandsons.
Virgie Patterson
BRANCH — Virgie Patterson, 93, of Branch died Monday, March 26, 2001, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a retired school teacher, a 4-H leader and was a member of Franklin County Home Demonstration Club and a member of Cole’s Chapel Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Cole’s Chapel Methodist Church with burial at Cole’s Chapel cemetery south of Branch under the direction of Smith Mortuary in Charleston.
She is survived by several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Hefley, Larry Acor, Joe and Mike Patterson, Johnny Balkman and Chris Teague.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wilma Raney Burke, 74, of Fort Smith died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a reinspector for Dixie Cup and was a Baptist.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Garden of Memories cemetery in Charleston.
She is survived by her husband, Graden “Grady” Burke; a stepdaughter, Rebecca J. Faldon of Fort Smith; two stepgrandsons, Scott and Mark Faldon, both of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Frank Day, Dave Galloway, Joe Knox, Alex Sylvester, Ronnie Ashley and Gary Paris.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MOFFETT — Charles “Ricky” Releford, 50, of Moffett died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in a Fort Smith hospital.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in New Morning Star Baptist Church in Moffett with burial at Center Point cemetery in Red Land, Okla. under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his companion, Margie Trimble of Fort Smith; two daughters, Donette La’Shawn Mabry of Flint, Mich. and Sheryl Adams of Fort Smith; a son, Charles Eugene Releford III of Flint, Mich.; four sisters, Barbara Lewis, Sandra McDowell, Phillis Latham and Beverly Heads, all of Flint, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James Posey, Vernell Benton, Leonard Youngblood, Cletus and Elex Perryman, Fred Copeland, Eddie Crisp and Samuel Henry.
The family will visit with friends at 113 S. Opie in Moffett.
Jewell Rowland
ROLAND — Jewell “J.R.” Rowland, 74, of Roland died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Fort Smith. He was a retired lineman for Bell South Telephone and a veteran of World War II.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roland City cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Kaye Rowland; two stepdaughters, Regina Kaye Hammonds of Roland and Darcy Ann Trotter of West Uniontown, Okla.; one sister, Virginia Poe of Cordova, Tenn.; two brothers, Guy and Charles Rowland, both of Memphis; and one grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Bill Frazier, Charley Hatfield, Phil Lovell, David Summerhill, Mickie Stamps and Gary Crippins.

WISTER — Betty Oma Lee Dawson, 80, of Wister died Monday, March 26, 2001, in Poteau. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She is survived by two sons, Virgil and Clifford James, both of California; a sister, Ann Collins of Stockton, Calif.; several grandchildren and great-granchildren.

ALMA — Mae Evelyn Snow Reed, 61, of Alma died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Fort Smith. She was employed by Weldon-Williams and Lick Printing Company and was a volunteer for Howard Elementary School and a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Dublin Free Will Baptist Church with burial at Wares Chapel cemetery in Dublin under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; two daughters, Becky Diane Prock of Alma and Pamela G. Camp of Greenwood; five sons, Danny Reed of Russellville, Rickey and Tim Reed, both of Alma, Terry Reed of Fort Smith and Randy Reed of Van Buren; her mother and stepfather, Martha A. and Hubert Hutchins of Muldrow; a sister, June McTyre of Fort Smith; a brother, Lonnie Snow of Roland; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

MENA — Helen Meuser Liles, 91, of Mena died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Mena. She was born March 24, 1910, in Princeton, Ind. She was a seamstress for Worthington Dress Shop and a member of First Baptist Church and the choir.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel in Mena with burial at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, Ocus; two daughters, Nina Jean Carr of Burkburnett, Texas, and Maxine Bolin of Ontario, Calif.; a son, Larry Liles of Mena; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Imogene Treat
MULDROW — Imogene Treat, 63, of Muldrow died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Fort Smith. She was a 1955 graduate of Muldrow High School. She formerly worked at First National Bank in Fort Smith, retired from Holt Krock Clinic and was a member of First Baptist Church of Muldrow.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church in Muldrow with burial at Blackjack cemetery northwest of Muldrow under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Muldrow.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; three sons, Gary of Raytown, Mo., Dennis and Kevin, both of Muldrow; her parents, Nathaniel and Lelan Catlett of Muldrow; a sister, Glena Jarratt of San Angelo, Texas; two brothers, Dean and Harold Catlett, both of Montgomery, Texas; six grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

BONANZA — Max J. Wilcox, 82, of Bonanza died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Fort Smith. He was a retired machinist for Acme Brick.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Dora Jane Parks of Crossett; four stepdaughters, Dora Ann Dewitt of Bonanza, Mary Ruth Thrailkill of Paris, Christine Canada of Jenny Lind and Nora Canada of Greenwood; two sons, Nola Max Wilcox of Crossett and Kenneth Wilcox of Little Rock; three stepsons, Nola Thrailkill of Bonanza, Noah Thrailkill of Paris and Jerry Thrailkill of Witcherville; two sisters, Ulva “Penny” Burkheart and Juanita Sailor, both of Houston; 36 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
