Velma Strachan
ROGERS — Velma J. Strachan, 78, of Rogers died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, in Rogers. She was born Oct. 12, 1923, in Drummondville, Quebec, Canada. She was a homemaker and was an active member of First Baptist Church in Rogers where she sang in the choir and was active in Sunday school. She was retired from Stage Department stores and was the widow of Ted Strachan.
Funeral was held Tuesday in Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home in Springdale with burial at Fairview cemetery in Fayetteville.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jean Strachan of the home and Linda Carres of Springdale; two sons, Steve Strachan of Lavaca and Brian Strachan of Decorah, Iowa; a brother, Ed Ogran of Bassett, Va.; six grandchildren, Gretchen Hare of Springdale, Laura Dietrich of Highlands, N.J., Tom, Tiffany and Cory Strachan and Zac Prange, all of Decorah, Iowa.
Pallbearers were Tom Strachan, Zac Prange, Chris Hare, Chuck Dietrich, John Miller and Jim LeFevre.
Lillie Banning
ETNA COMMUNITY — Lillie Emma “Bess” Banning, 80, of Etna Community south of Ozark, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in Ozark. She was born Nov. 10, 1920, in Ozark. She was a homemaker and a former Ozark High School Cafeteria employee and the widow of Gene Banning.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Highland cemetery in Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by three stepsons, Harold Banning of Charleston, S. Gene Banning of Paris and Jerry W. Banning of Ozark; and several nieces and nephews.
Dan Elam
KNOXVILLE — Dan Elam, 79, of Knoxville died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in Russellville. He was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Ozark. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a retired poultry and cattle farmer, a electrician and a land developer, a member of Knoxville Masonic Lodge No. 370, the Fort Smith Scottish Rites, a 32nd degree Mason and was a Baptist.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Knoxville cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma; three daughters, Danna Masterson, Louise Manns and Brenda Lax, all of Knoxville; a son, Ricky Elam of Knoxville; a brother, Richard Elam of Lemon Grove, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bud Masterson, David Manns, Daniel and Johnny Elam, Jackie Lax and Kevin Wish.
The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Minnie Bascue
MULBERRY — Minnie Bascue, 88, of Mulberry died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a homemaker and a member of Alma Full Gospel Outreach Church. She was the widow of James R. Bascue.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Alma Full Gospel Outreach Church with burial at New cemetery of Mulberry under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by five sons, Marion Bascue of Mulberry, Bob Bascue of California, David W. Bascue of Ozark, Johnny Allen Bascue of Huntington and Billy Jack Bascue of Midland; a sister, Allie Ruth Collins of Fort Smith; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Sam, Matt, Jamie, Warren, Robert and David Bascue Jr.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Clifford Akins
HARTMAN — Clifford Freeman Akins, 72, of Hartman died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in a local nursing home. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired cattle farmer and a member of Eagle Heights Baptist Church in Harrison.
Service will be in Texas. Local arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
He is survived by his wife, Delouris; three daughters, Freda Shipman of Jasper, Greta Akins of Clarksville and Shawn Finch of Greenbrier; a sister, Mildred Wheat of Texas; three brothers, Fred, H.C. and Leroy Akins, all of Texas; and three grandchildren.
Jerry Burrows
Jerry Burrows, 60, of Mulberry died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in a local hospital. He was employed at Therma-Tru and a member of Oak Bower Community Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Oak Bower cemetery in Mulberry.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline of the home; two daughters, Debbie Johnson of Fort Smith and Nina Cagle of Van Buren; two stepdaughters, Dorothy Yakley of Grove, Okla. and June Schenieder of Mulberry; four sons, Clifford and Jarred, both of Van Buren, Gerald of Fowler, Colo. and Roger of Mulberry; a stepson, Thirl McCollum of Mulberry; three sisters, Alma Jean States of Prague, Okla., Nancy Brown of Earlsboro, Okla. and Joan Fischer of Jerome, Idaho; 17 grandchildren, 16 stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Honorary pallbearer will be Paul Curd.
Nola Ann Michael
Nola Ann Michael, 91, of Mansfield died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in a Greenwood nursing home. She was a homemaker and a member of Mansfield First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Leon Michael.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with burial at Hartford Memorial Park.
She is survived by two daughters, Juanita Ridgeway of Haysville, Kan. and Leona Slate of Mansfield; six granddaughters, Sharon Smith of Ontario, Calif., Dava Simpson of Leawood, Kan., Sandy Adams of Fort Smith, Sherrell Johnson and Melissa Briscoe, both of Mansfield and Sharla Englebright of Wichita, Kan.; three great-grandsons, Cody Johnson of Mansfield, Matthew Adams of Fort Smith and Ian Englebright of Wichita, Kan.; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ron Briscoe, Kenneth Adams, David Englebright, Donnie Simpson, Pete Michael and Donald Autry.
The body may be viewed 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Jean Richards Falkenstein, of Spokane, Wash., formerly of Fort Smith, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in Spokane. She was born June 24, 1930.
A private memorial service was held Tuesday at the home of her sister, Shirley Richards Hurley of El Dorado. The body was cremated under the direction of Neptune Society of Spokane, Wash.
She is survived by a daughter, Christy Ann Falkenstein of Spokane, Wash.; a son, Dr. Richard Falkenstein of Middleburg, Va.; a sister, Shirley Richards Hurley of El Dorado; and four grandchildren.

DORA — Velta Louise Schuster, 65, of Dora died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal faith.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Dyer cemetery in Dyer under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by a son, Jimmy Schuster of Las Vegas; a stepdaughter, Margie Vaughn of Muldrow; two grandchildren, Brandon Schuster of Van Buren and Cody Schuster of Las Vegas.

BOONEVILLE — Blanche Agnes Cox, 89, of Booneville died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in her home. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Waldron and had been attending Our Lady of Assumption Church Booneville. She was the widow of LeRoy Cox.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today in Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Waldron.
Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Jude Catholic Church with burial at Freedom cemetery in Waldron.
She is survived by three daughters, Kathy Wood of Booneville, Joan Franklin of Greenwood and Mary Ann Womack of Hartford; two sons, Ken and Jerre Cox, both of Freedom Community; three sisters, Loretta Dewitt of Bettendorf, Iowa, Lucille Kepple of Moline, Ill. and Theresa Shelangouski of Rapid City, Ill.; 31 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Elmer Duncan
WALDRON — Elmer Dewey Duncan, 80, of Waldron died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, a member of Scott County Fox & Wolf Hunters Association, Leflore County Fox & Wolf Hunters Association and the Cauthron Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today in Cauthron Baptist Church with burial at Kirk cemetery in Cauthron under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Mike A. Duncan of Bates and Steve Duncan of Waldron; four sisters, Marie Newman of Oklahoma City, Etta Newman of Mansfield, Edith Thompson of Waldron and Louise Thompson of Russellville; three brothers, Jim Duncan of Pocola, Sammie and Loyd Duncan, both of Cauthron; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Florence Jones
POTEAU — Florence Irene Jones, 86, of Poteau died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in Poteau. She was born Oct. 28, 1914, in Poteau. She was a longtime member of First Church of the Nazarene in Poteau and was church pianist. She and her husband operated the Maurice Jones Agency from 1961-1988. She was the widow of Maurice Jones.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday in First Church of the Nazarene in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
She is survived by a daughter, Connie Tucker of Poteau; three sisters, Frances Whiteaker of Fort Smith, Doris Drake of Ojai, Calif. and Betty Erb of Puyallup, Wash.; a brother, W.H. “Ace” Gould of Poteau; two grandchildren, Brenda Kay Pearce of Sallisaw and Russell Gene Tucker of Poteau and two great-grandsons.

Terry Dugan, 42, of Fort Smith died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in her home. She was a machine operator for Arkansas Poly Inc. and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Mass will be 10 a.m. today in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her mother, Toni Wallace of Fort Smith; a sister, Robin Robinson of Fort Smith; a brother, Kevin Dugan of Greenwood; two nieces and several aunts and uncles.

Bobbie Hoyle
POTEAU — Bobbie L. Hoyle, 76, of Poteau died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Poteau. He was born July 19, 1925, in Muskogee, Okla. He served from 1943-1946 in the Air Force where he received an honorable discharge as an A&E mechanic, he attended schools in Earlsboro, Okla. and attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah where he received his bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry. He was the chief chemist at El Paso Natural Gas in El Paso, Texas from 1950-1966, a research scientist at Amoco from 1967-1986, he was a jeweler and was of the Assembly of God faith.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday in Northside Christian Church in Poteau with burial at Springhill cemetery in Monroe under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; a daughter, Kathleen Hoyle Fisher of Mannford; two stepchildren, Steven Frazier of California and Lanai Mayo of Sallisaw; four grandchildren, Amanda and Cynthia Fisher, both of Mannford, Elizabeth Sue Gutches of Indiana and Crystal Dawn Sanderson of Wyoming; six stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Sammy “Butch” Andrews, 55, of Fort Smith died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, in his home. He was a Army veteran.
Graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith. The body was cremated.
He is survived by two daughters, Sondra Gomez of Montrose, Colo. and Nikki Femister of Charleston; three sons, Michael Smith and Brent and Jamie Femister, all of Fort Smith; five sisters, Charlene Tucker, Frances Whitley, Edna Brown, Norma Harper and LInda Page, all of Fort Smith; four brothers, Robert Moss, Wilbert, John and Reginald Andrews, all of Fort Smith; and three grandchildren.

MULDROW — Robert Lee Ogdon, 67, of Muldrow died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Fort Smith. He was a retired welder and mechanic and was a Baptist. He was the widower of Martha Ann Ogdon.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Muldrow with burial at Blackjack cemetery northwest of Muldrow.
He is survived by two daughters, Katherine Wess of Roland and Karla Jo Lenington of Muldrow; a son, Kenneth Lee Ogdon of Muldrow; four sisters, Lera Marie Southern and Deicia Battaglia, both of Roland, Lucille Reese of Muldrow and Emma Pearson of Denham Springs, La.; two brothers, Billy Joe and Donald Ray Ogdon, both of Muldrow; and six grandchildren.
