Madgie Rutledge
Madgie Rutledge, 85, Fort Smith died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a member of Derrick Chapel AME Church where she was a stewardess, a trustee and a class leader. She was the widow of Jason H. Rutledge.
Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Zion CME Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Putman of Lawton, Okla., and Margie Tremble of Fort Smith; two sisters, Elnora Barnett of Lawton, Okla., and Linda Lincoln of Kansas City, Mo.; Elzie Abrams of McKinney, Texas; three grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James Christian, Ravin Caldwell Sr., Harold Kinnard, James Christian II, Benny Taylor Sr. and Herbert Norwood Jr.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will visit with friends at 2316 N. 32nd St.
Grover Lance
MENA — Grover Lee Lance, 85, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in an area hospital. He was a longtime resident of Mena, a mechanic and a member of the United Pentecostal Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at United Pentecostal Church with burial at Mount Gilead cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Hooper and Virginia Davis, both of Mena; two brothers, Carl and Ray Lance, both of Mena; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Arville Busch, Charles Lance, Herman Jansen and Marvin and Raymond Yahn.
Ida Dialphia Cashon
Ida Dialphia Cashon, 86, of Muldrow died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 in Muldrow.
She was born March 3, 1916, in Oktaha, Okla. and was a retired army nurse and Southern Baptist. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Louie Eubanks and Clarence Casbon; and two sisters, Dollie Morgan and Telitha Jones.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Muldrow with burial at Memorial Park cemetery in Muskogee, Okla.
She is survived by five nieces, Mary Alice Shackelford of Broken Arrow, Okla., Joann Swafford of Spiro, Janette Brenzovich of Dale City, Va., Katie Kerr of Muldrow and Susie Earls of Muldrow; three nephews, George Thomas Morgan of Sallisaw, Paul Jones of Muldrow and Charles Jones of Spiro; and several other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be newphews and great-nephews.
Viewing will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today.
Loretta S. Cooper
Loretta S. Cooper, 89, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at her home.
She was a secretary for the Don Bowers Insurance Agency. She was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and was in Circle 4 of St. Boniface. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Cooper. Her father Pete Schmitz was the founder of Pete’s Place and Bill and Loretta owned and operated it for several years. She was a volunteer at the Wear House and a graduate of St. Boniface Catholic School and Fort Smith High School.
Rosary will beat 6:30 p.m. today at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Cooper of Fort Smith, Susie Koenigseder of Subiaco and Ann Childs of Fort Smith; one son, Clark Cooper of Fort Smith; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jill Sewell, Amy Strobel, Kathy Schluterman, Jay Koenigseder, Audrey Burgess and Kelly Cooper.

Arval E. Thetford
Arval E. Thetford, 89, of Fort Smith died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Fort Smith.
He was a retired supervisor for Harding Glass Company after 34 years and a member of Butterfield Assembly of God Church in Van Buren. He was a master mason and a member of the Belle Point Masonic Lodge No. 20 F & AM and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Octavia.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Roselawn cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Arvelene Faulkner and her husband Jack of Duncanville, Texas, and Naomi Hardcastle and her husband Kenneth of Van Buren; two sons, Jack L. Thetford and his wife Ann of Houston, and Jerry L. Thetford and his wife Faye of Irving, Texas; one sister, Verna Jean Candler of Cushing, Okla.; five grandsons, Brian Faulkner of Red Oak, Texas, Bradley Faulkner of Midlothian, Texas, Lee Hardcastle of Fort Smith, Jeff Thetford of Warren Robins, Ga., and Jon Thetford of Houston; nine great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Dexter B. Merrill
Dexter B. Merrill, 74, passed away Sept. 26 in Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Pocola. He was born Dec. 31, 1927, in Anna, Texas, and was a longtime resident of Pocola where his career was in sales. He is survived by his wife, Patricia,; two sons, Lee and Gene Merrill, both of San Diego; two stepsons, Monty Miller fo Kansas City, Mo., and Mickey Miller of Fort Smith; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jessie Normandin of Edmond, Okla., Bonnie B. Ford of Dallas and Sally Moffett of Arlington, Texas; and a brother, Billy B. Merrill of Euless, Texas.
Visitation will be today at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Pocola First United Methodist Church with interment at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Marlin Powers
MENA — Marlin Duane Powers, 76, of Mena died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born June 14, 1926, in La Porte City, Iowa. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the aircraft USS Ticonderoga CV14. He was postmaster in La Porte City, a rural carrier, a farmer and a member of the Westland Methodist Church in La Porte City, the VFW and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was a 4-H leader most of his life.
The body was cremated under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
He is survived by his wife, Carmen; a daughter, Nancy Onyon of Tulsa; three brothers, Robert of McCullen, Texas, Roger of Gaffney, S.C., and Cleo of Tonka Bay, Minn.; and two grandchildren.
Nancy Owen
HATFIELD — Nancy Louellen Owen, 60, of Hatfield died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Mena. She was born Jan. 1, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from the University of Texas, worked in a department store in Des Moines and later was co-founder and assistant editor of the Looking Glass in Mena.
The body was sent for cremation under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
She is survived by her husband, Gene; a son, Sean Owen of Richardson, Texas; a sister, Sara Rowe of Washington Court House, Ohio; a brother, Jon Seaman of Nashville, Ark.; and one grandchild.
William McKinney
BIXBY, Okla. — William E. McKinney, 75, of Bixby, Okla., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Tulsa. He was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Hontubby, Okla. He graduated from Poteau High School in the class of 1947, attended Poteau Junior College and Northeastern State University and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a master’s degree in education. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and received the Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal and Bronze Star. He was trained in military police work. He was a member of the 45th Infantry Division and was deployed to Germany and Korea. He served as superintendent at Adair and Grove schools and Northeast Vo-Tech and as assistant superintendent at Muskogee Public Schools. He retired as superintendent for Bixby Public Schools. He was a member of the Bixby Optimist Club, Lions Club and Kiwanis and was a 32nd-degree Mason.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Riverview Baptist Church under the direction of Bixby Funeral Service. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy; a daughter, Dianna Blue of Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Mark of Rogers; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans or the American Cancer Society.
Bobby Butler
PANAMA — Bobby Lowell Butler, 49, of Panama died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in Paris. He was born Dec. 22, 1952, in Spiro. He was a roughneck with Thornton Drilling, a member of the First Baptist Church in Panama and formerly in the Army National Guard, Poteau unit.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Panama with burial at New Hope cemetery in Spiro.
He is survived by two sons, Brandon and Brent Butler, both of Panama; his mother, Sylvia Russell of Panama; two sisters, Lois Berg of Mena and Mary Plummer of Poteau; five brothers, John Butler and J.C. Ahart, both of Buckner, Mo., Steven Butler of Kansas City, Mo., and James and Joe Butler, both of Fort Smith; and one grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Al Monks, Rick Hall, Cecil and Larry Lovell, Timmy Watts and Vonnie Miller.
Mervin Washington
MULBERRY — Mervin Washington, 40, of Mulberry died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Paris. He was a counselor for Focus Health Care, a former football player for Bowling Green State University and a volunteer with youth sports.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Alma with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa; three sons, Terrell, Jarrod and Rodney, all of the home; his father, Robbie Robinson of Wickliff, Ohio; his grandmother, Inez Woods of Wickliff, Ohio; and a sister, Dee Dee Washington of Wickliff, Ohio.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Almond, Ronny Perkinson, Cleo Limon, Chuck Pachl, Preston Marley and John Donley.

MENA — Sandra Louise Lott, 56, of Mena died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1945, in Orange, Texas. She was a secretary and a housewife, a member of Southside Baptist Church in Carthage, Texas, and a resident of Mena since 1967.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Hall Funeral Service Memorial Chapel in Mena with burial at Concord cemetery in Mena.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny Lott of Mena; a son, Lloyd Lee Lott of Houston; a sister, Brenda J. Boggs of Longview, Texas; and two brothers, David Wayne Boggs and Melton Paul Boggs, both of Carthage, Texas.
Doyle Terrell
GORE — Doyle Terrell, 72, of Gore died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Gore. He was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Gum Springs. He was a construction worker, a carpenter, recently retired from Gore Schools maintenance and a Pentecostal. He was a longtime song leader at the White Church just outside Gore.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Gore with burial at Stevenson cemetery in Gore.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; three daughters, Judy McCoy of Gore, Janet Austin of Henryetta and Sarah Terrell of Gore; five sons, Doyle D. Terrell and Charles Terrell, both of Gore, Jimmy Don Terrell of Tulsa, and Bobby Joe Terrell and Billy Ray Terrell, both of Gum Springs, Okla.; two sisters, Lola Mannon and Pat Childress, both of Gore; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be nephews.

Rev. Leonard Morrison
PARIS — The Rev. Leonard Morrison, 74, of Paris died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Paris. He was a minister emeritus, a member of the First Christian Church in Paris, Paris Lions Club, North Logan County Ministerial Alliance, Arkansas Disciples Clergy Association, Community Outreach Board, American Legion and North Logan Hospital Auxiliary. He was a sergeant major in the Army and a veteran of World War II.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Paris with burial at Oakwood cemetery in Paris under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Morrison; two sons, Keith Morrison of Subiaco and Tom Morrison of Paris; a sister, Margaret Shomber of Great Bend, Kan.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Harvey Johns, Ron Trusty, Steve Forbis, Billy Jim Warren, Larry Patterson, Steve Huck, Jerald Nietert and Jared Cleveland.

Leo “Thomas” Robison, 86, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was retired from Harding Glass Co.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barling cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Mollie; two daughters, Nancy Behrens of St. Paul, Minn., and Betty Conlan of Overland Park, Kan.; a brother, John D. Robison of Missouri; and three grandchildren.
