Arval Thetford
Arval E. Thetford, 89, of Fort Smith died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Fort Smith.
He was a retired supervisor for Harding Glass Company after 34 years and a member of Butterfield Assembly of God Church in Van Buren. He was a master Mason and a member of the Belle Point Masonic Lodge No. 20 F & AM and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was the widower of Octavia Thetford.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Roselawn cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Arvelene Faulkner of Duncanville, Texas, and Naomi Hardcastle of Van Buren; two sons, Jack L. Thetford of Houston, and Jerry L. Thetford of Irving, Texas; a sister, Verna Jean Candler of Cushing, Okla.; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Brian, James and Erik Faulkner, Lee Hardcastle, Jeff Thetford and Bill Candler Jr.
Dexter Merrill
KANSAS CITY, Mo. Dexter B. Merrill, 74, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Pocola, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in Kansas City. He was born Dec. 31, 1927, in Anna, Texas, and was a longtime resident of Pocola, where his career was in sales.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia,; two sons, Lee and Gene Merrill, both of San Diego; two stepsons, Monty Miller of Kansas City, Mo., and Mickey Miller of Fort Smith; three sisters, Jessie Normandin of Edmond, Okla., Bonnie B. Ford of Dallas and Sally Moffett of Arlington, Texas; a brother, Billy B. Merrill of Euless, Texas; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. today at Pocola First United Methodist Church with interment at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Andy Weant, John Highley, Don and Ronnie Bradford, Mike Bryant and Britt Reaves.

Connie S. Moore
Connie S. Moore, 52, of Fort Smith died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was involved with Bost Human Development and the Special Olympics. She was preceded in death by her parents, William F. and Helen M. Baker, and a sister, Katie Baker.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a son, Jason Moore of Fort Hood, Texas; a sister, Maurine Rogers of Fort Smith; two brothers, Bill Baker of Denver and Rick Baker of Fort Smith; two grandchildren, Kelsy Marie Moore and Aaron Triston Moore of Killeen, Texas; one niece and several nephews.
Pallbearers will be Rick Baker, Shay Morse, Maxwell Baker, Jeff Rogers, Larry Jones, Dicky Zellars, Jessie Yutterman and Jason Moore.
Honorary pallbearer will be Bill Baker.

Mae Ruth Selig Meyers, 77, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister.
Rosary service will be 6:30 p.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface with burial at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Greg Myers; two sons, Mike Meyers of Malvern and Chris Meyers of Fort Smith; and five grandchildren, Erik, Evan, Henry and John Meyers and Rudy Merryman.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Hendricks, Kenny Schlag, Jimmy Klimpt and Rick, Danny, Ryan, Sam and B.J. Meyers.

Ray Daniels
Ray Daniels, 74, of Van Buren entered into rest Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Webbville, Ky., the son of the late Kenneth and Grace Daniels. He and was a retired security guard for Professionals Security and a member of Southside Church of the Nazerene.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Southside Church of the Nazerene under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Michaelle of the home; two daughters, Vicki Thompson of Columbus, Ohio, and Grace Hibdon of Fort Worth, Texas; six sons, Daniel Conn of Barling, Timothy Daniels of Alma, and Eric, Keith and Kenny Daniels and Larry Davis, all of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Betty Buck of Groves City, Ohio, Louise Lowry of Canal Winchester, Ohio, and June Daniels of Columbus; 11 grandchildren, Misti Green, Brandy Herbstriet and Kendra Daniels, all of Columbus, Kim Mayer of Marion, Ohio, David Conn of Barling, Angela and Jerry Conn, both of Fort Smith, Austin Daniels and Jackie and Cody Manus, all of Alma, and Julian Daniels of Houston; three great-grandchildren, Cora Mae Green of Columbus and Kaitlyn and Brooke Mayer, both of Marion, Ohio; a devoted sister-in-law, Bernice Watson, devoted niece Rebecca Langley and her husband James of Mulberry; a nephew, William Watson of Fort Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Patricia Ann Avlos, 76, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Loretta S. Cooper
Loretta S. Cooper, 89, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in her home.
She was a secretary for the Don Bowers Insurance Agency. She was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and was in Circle 4 of St. Boniface. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Cooper. Her father Pete Schmitz was the founder of Petes Place and Bill and Loretta owned and operated it for several years. She was a volunteer at the Wear House and a graduate of St. Boniface Catholic School and Fort Smith High School.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross cemetery under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Cooper of Fort Smith, Susie Koenigseder of Subiaco and Ann Childs of Fort Smith; a son, Clark Cooper of Fort Smith; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Velma Thornton
HEAVENER Velma Thornton, 90, of Heavener died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, in Lexington, Okla. She was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Central. She was a vocational-agriculture instructor in Heavener from 1938 to 1968, was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Heavener and the Golden Age and United Methodist Women in Heavener and worked at a flower shop for a number of years after the death of her husband, Reeder, in 1970. In 1999 she moved to Purcell, Okla., and for most of the past three years she lived in an assisted living center.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Heavener with burial at Memorial Park cemetery in Heavener under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home of Purcell.
She is survived by her two daughters, Faynelle Johnson of San Angelo, Texas, and Betty Little of Purcell; a son, Reeder Thornton of Lenexa, Kan.; 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Jewell Ross
DOVER Jewell Ross, 83, of Dover died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, in an area hospital. She was born July 3, 1919, in Bullfrog Valley. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church of Hector and the widow of Arthur Ross.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Humphrey Funeral Service Chapel in Russellville with burial at Lane cemetery in Dover.
She is survived by two daughters, Suella Bratton of Ozark and Ida Rosa Chisum of Scottsville, Ariz.; a son, Donald L. Ross of Dardanelle; two sisters, Evelyn Meeks of Exeter, Calif., and Mildred Yeager of Russellville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Leda Volene Likens, 77, of Van Buren, formerly of Scranton, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, in a local hospital. She was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Scranton. He was retired licensed practicing nurse and a member of City Heights Methodist Church in Van Buren, Eastern Star, American Legion Post No. 31 and Disabled American Veterans.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Prairie View cemetery in Prairie View.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Mahar, Rachel Turman and Beverly Fisher, all of Van Buren; three sisters, Freda Goolsbee of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Sue Waldon and Betty Lowe, both of Scranton; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

GORE Bert Clark, 85, of Gore died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, in Gore. He was a former police officer in Muskogee, Okay and Boynton, Okla., and a former barber and construction worker. He was a veteran of World War II and attended the Church of Christ.
