Chester Yandell
SUMMERFIELD — Chester Wayne Yandell, 66, of Summerfield died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Summerfield. He was born April 5, 1936, in Summerfield. He was in the Army and worked with the Oklahoma Forestry Department.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Summerfield cemetery under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by three daughters, Tammy Covey of Washington, N.C., Billie Parks of Van Buren and Bobbye Loomis of Summerfield; a sister, Birdie Hudlow of Leflore; two brothers, Raymond and Bud Yandell, both of Summerfield; and nine grandchildren.
Ted Gann
Ted Gann, 93, of Fort Smith died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a route salesman for Acee Milk Co., a member of Evangel Temple Assembly of God, a Navy veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 31 and AARP.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Robert Slaton of Lubbock, Texas, and Wanda and Bob Bell of Woodburn, Ore.; a son and daughter-in-law, Ted E. and Carolyn Gann of Fort Smith; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Gann, Justin Alexander, Dustin Phillips, the Rev. David Keck, the Rev. Eddie Morton and John Newton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph, Grady, Claybourn and David Freeman.

Irma C. Bass
Irma C. Bass, 95, of Van Buren died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was a member of Wood Memorial Christian Church, a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Ozark, a former Franklin County clerk and a retired assistant psychologist for Arkansas State Hospital. She was the widow of Arley Bass.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Highland cemetery in Ozark.
She is survived by a daughter, Arlene Thompson of Poteau; a son, Ronald Bass of Fort Smith; a sister, Allyne Rownak of Van Buren; six grandchildren, Cody Dickerson, Kramer, Charles and Blake Bass, Charlotte Bright and David Thompson; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Naomi Baker
Ruth Naomi Baker was born March 7, 1917, and passed away on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the age of 85. She was retured from Florida State Hospital, where she worked for 29 years. She loved the state of Florida, where she had lived for 50 years of her life, but due to failing health, she moved to Alma to be cared for by her sister, Kathryn, her nephew, William, and his wife, Gwen Keith, and a neice, Sandra Wiley. She was an absolute joy to her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Baker; two children, Randy and Brad Baker; her parents, Ethyel and William Drake, and a sister, Mary Ellen Spears.
Funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. graveside at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by two grandsons, Ryan Baker of Hollywood, Fla., and Reese Baker of Singer Island, Fla.; a sister, Kathryn Apple of Alma; a brother, Thomas Drake and his wife, Eva, of Kansas City, Mo.; three nephews, Bob Keith of Fort Smith, Ward Keith of Alma and William Keith of Alma, with whom she has lived for the past 14 months.
Niva Jo Vion
Niva Jo Vion, 88, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a retired department manager after 30 years with Sears and Roebuck Co., a homemaker and a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith.
She was preceded in death by Clifford M. Vion and Roy Fisk.
She is survived by a son, Roy and wife Linda Fisk of Cordova, Tenn.; a brother, Walton Woodward of Paris; two grandchildren, Melinda Bryant and Kevin Fisk; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be family members.
The family will visit with friends from noon until service time today at the funeral home.
Wiley Richard Franklin Allen
Wiley Richard Franklin Allen, known to his friends and family as Richard, passed from this life on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Fort Smith, after a short illness. He was aged 68 years, six months and one day. Richard was born April 21, 1934, in Levelland, Texas, the son of Homer Anderson Allen and Susie Millsaps Allen and lived in Texas and Phoenix, before moving with his parents to Blue Mountain.
Richard met and married
the love of his life, Delois Eugenia “Jean” Thomas Allen in 1958. They settled in the Mansfield area and unto them was born three daughters, Karen Jean Allen Davis, Sharon E.S. Allen White and Shelbie Diann Allen.
Richard was a graduate of Magazine High School Class of 1952, a veteran of the Marine Corps. In 1966, Richard was elected mayor of Mansfield where he had lived for many years and he served one term, succeeded in office by his wife, Jean. Richard also served as the town marshal of Mansfield for a number of years, a position of trust that he took to heart. Richard was a real estate broker for 38 years and an active member of the Arkansas Realtor’s Association.
Richard spent the last several years living in Newton County, recently relocating to Clarksville.
Richard never met a stranger, was an avid sportsman and hunter, a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, loved communing with nature, which was second only to being with his family.
Richard was predeceased by his mother and father, grandparents, his father-in-law, Shelby Thomas and numerous uncle and aunts.
Richard is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jean of the home. He is also survived by daughter, Karen and son-in-law, Tim and granddaughter, Jade Renee Davis of West Palm Beach, Fla., his daughter, Sharon White and son-in-law, Randy and grandson, Joshua Pascal, stepgranddaughter, Dasha White and stepgrandson, Justin White of Wheelersburg, Ohio and his youngest daughter, Shelbie Diann Allen and friend, Jules Baxley of Roswell, N.M. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Erma Thomas of Waldron, his maternal aunts, Nellie Lee and Mary Clevenger of Knoxville, Tenn., the Charles and Frances Hunt family of Waldron, the Jimmy and Dolly Bartlett family of Mansfield, the Jim and Margie Thomas family of Bixby, Okla. and many, many friends.
Those who knew Richard will not mourn his passing, but celebrate his life, a life that epitomized strength of character, courage and individuality. He will, however, be greatly missed by family and friends.
Happy hunting, Dad, until we see you again!
He will be laid to rest at Coop Prairie cemetery in Mansfied.

Albert H. “Bud” Rogers
Albert H. “Bud” Rogers, 81, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at his home.
He was born July 23, 1921, in Cardwell, Mo. He was a retired dragline operator for Garland Coal Mining Company, of the Church of Christ faith, a 50-year Mason, Hornesville, Mo. Lodge No. 215, a perpetual member of Fidelity 86 Order of Eastern Star Van Buren, a World War II veteran and his CB handle was “Coal Digger.”
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
He is survived by his wife, Liz of 54 years; two daughters, Orthia Elisa Obana and husband Melvin of Fort Smith and Ginger Sue Rogers of Paragould; two sons, Larry Dale Rogers and wife Kathy and Roy Lee Rogers and wife Jeanette, all of Fort Smith; two sisters, Hattie Low Carmack of Kennett, Mo.; and Maxine Smith of Muskegon, Mich.; a brother, William Ralph Rogers of Benton Harbor, Mich.; six grandchildren, Michelle, Mark and Stephanie O’Bana; Crystal Reeves, Mick Bowlin and Jesse Rogers; and one great grandchild, Donovon Reeves.

Dora Lora Beatrice “Bea” Dyer
Dora Lora Beatrice “Bea” Dyer, born Feb. 19, 1922, was called back to the Lord Oct. 23, 2002. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Lester Ray; brother, Bill Battles and sister, Frankie Shelby. She is survived by brothers, Raymond Battles and wife Gayle and Junior Battles and wife Sammie; sister, Merrel Turner and husband J.C.; brother-in-law, Pete Shibley and sisters-in-law, Mildred Schroeder and Fay Jennings; daughters, Betty Meikle and husband Ron, Linda Meyer Alexander and husband T.J., Carol Pilch and husband Wayne; a son, Robert Dyer and wife Shawna; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and many more extended family and dear friends.
Bea was a wonderful mom and a cherished sister who will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to share in her life. Prior to her illness, she was an active member of the North Park Baptist Church in Van Buren. She followed her husband in his career at Boeing to many different cities across the country, settling for a time in Santa Maria, Calif., before returning home to Arkansas. She spent the last few months of her life in Tucson and passed away peacefully in her sleep.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 2, 2002, at Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren.

Lena Shaffer
VIAN — Lena O. Shaffer, 86, of Vian, formerly of Dardanelle, died Thursday, October 24, 2002, in Vian. She was born Nov. 11, 1915 in Mena.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Gore United Methodist Church with burial at Rosehill Burial Park under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Gore.
She is survived by a daughter, Darlene Rook of Gore; a son, John Shaffer of Crowley, Texas; and six grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m today.

Doris Luedloff
Doris Luedloff, 83, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, in Fort Smith. She was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was the widow of Vernon Luedloff.
Memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alma under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna Marikas of Oroville, Calif.; a son, Gary Luedloff of Fort Smith; a grandchild and a great grandchild.

BOONEVILLE — Vera Calley May Williams, 86, of Booneville died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, in an area hospital. She was a housewife.

She is survived by a daughter, Chris Lytle of Seminole, Texas; two sisters, Lavada Cooper of Paris and Louise Collins of Fort Smith; a brother, W.C. Beckett of Boonville; and five grandchildren.
Robert Fisher
ALMA — Robert D. Fisher, 67, of Alma died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in a local nursing home. He was a retired truck driver from the Dwayne Higgins Trucking Co.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dyer cemetery in Dyer under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Fisher; a son, Tommy Fisher of Altus, Okla.; and five grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Doris Rice
ALMA — Doris Jean Rice, 61, of Alma died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in a local hospital. He was retired from the revenue office and a member of Kibler United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Kibler United Methodist Church with burial at Gill cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Stewart and Robin Grimmett, both of Alma; a son, Shannon Riddle of Alma; a sister, Glenda Leathers of Quinlan, Texas; two brothers, Richard Gifford and Bruce Gentry, both of Van Buren; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Tyrell Riddle, Lance Stewart, Jeff Gifford, Stanley Grimmett, Roy Rogers and Leslie Van Matre.

Leo Stokes
OZARK — Leo Stokes, 84, of Ozark died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, in an area hospital. He was a retired funeral director for Greer Funeral Home and salesperson for J.T. Greer & Son. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ozark, a former Ozark City councilman with 12 years of service and a past member of the Businessmen’s Fellowship of Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel of Ozark with burial at Highland cemetery in Ozark.
He is survived by his wife, Chella Stokes of Ozark; a daughter, Wilda Davis of Ozark; a sister, Ercie Woolsey of Ozark; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dallas Maples, Harold Brown, Robert Wofford, Charles Latham, Jim Plemons and Gerald Harvell.
